Introduction:

Shenmue is an action-adventure game series created, produced and directed by Yu Suzuki. Shenmue is a straight forward game that will see you taking part in various activities (including minigames and going to work each day).

This guide covers all trophies and how to get them. The trophy list is relatively easy to complete for this game, it just takes paying close attention to your progress. I will try to keep this guide as spoiler-free as possible but just be aware that some of the trophy descriptions provided by Sega contain spoilers. Finally, be aware that you start this game on December 3rd, 1986. You must complete the game (and all trophies) by April 15, 1987. This is more than enough time to do it but want to make sure you don't move too slowly.

Note: The maps used in this guide was originally provided by Dusk Golem on ResetEra

Walkthrough:

Note: Throughout the game, you will have downtime. One of the game mechanics is that this game moves in real time, there is no way to speed up the clock. There will be times when you need to wait for a certain time to move the story forward. When you find you have free time, spend it practicing your Kung Fu moves or working on the trophies in step 3.

Step 1: Turn off Area Jump

There is an option in the Shenmue I HD to fast travel to locations when leaving your house. While convenient, it could cause you to miss optional interactions needed for trophies. Specifically for the Freeloader trophy. Open the game menu by pressing :triangle:. Under the Options menu, go to Controls and turn off Area Jump.

Step 2: 9 Missable Trophies - 2,900 yen required (You start with 10,300)

There are 9 missable trophies that you can get very early in the game without progressing the story. You should grab the ones on the list below. They are listed in the order you should grab them to minimize backtracking. The Boy Scout trophy does need to be completed before a specific time during the day, so make sure you are not moving too slowly early on. See the Trophy Guide for instructions on each.

Step 3: Working toward 3 Missable Trophies

At this point you will start working on the main quest line of the game. However as you do, you should work toward 3 more missable trophies that can take some time to get. These should ideally be completed before step 6. While they can be completed after, the story starts to progress quicker at step 6, which could lead to missing them. See the Trophy Guide for instructions on each.

Step 4: 1 Story Trophy, 1 Missable Trophy

You will progress the main story until you get the 1st story trophy, and then grab another missable trophy. The missable trophy is also currently glitched, so make sure to see the Trophy Guide for instructions.

Step 5: 4 Story Trophies, 2 Missable Trophies

This will be the step that progresses the story the most. Make sure if you have not already obtained the 3 missable trophies in step 3 that you are working on these now. You want to have all 3 of those before progressing to the next step. See the Trophy Guide for instructions on each trophy in this step.

Step 6: 1 Story Trophy, 1 Missable Trophy

Before going to find gainful employment. Its a good idea to take a break from the story here and work on building up your Kung Fu moves. Sparing with Fuku-san, and Practicing your moves in Dobuita will make Step 8 easier. We are nearing the end, and the pace of the story is going to pick up soon. Once you feel confident in your progression, see the Trophy Guide for instructions on each trophy in this step.

Step 7: 1 Story Trophy, 1 Missable Trophy

Continue to work on Kung Fu moves when you can. We have 1 final missable trophy to grab. Luckily… its fairly hard to miss. See the Trophy Guide for instructions on each trophy in this step.

(S)Fallen Angels

(S)Hot Dog Moves

Step 8: 3 Story Trophies, 1 Platinum

We are here! The grand finale has arrived. No more missable trophies. Just follow the Trophy Guide for these final 3 trophies.

Exit the kitchen, turn left and walk down the hall past your room. Go to the last room on the left. This is Fuku-san's room. Enter the room and use :r2: to zoom in on his desk. There is a scroll that can be picked up. Once you have acquired this scroll, open the game menu by pressing Triangle18x18.png. Go to Scrolls, and select the scroll you just picked up to learn it. Doing so will unlock the trophy.

Optional (Recommended): There is another scroll in this house you can get to help with the “I Know More Kung Fu” trophy. Exit Fuku-san’s room and turn right. Head down the hall past your room, and the kitchen until the hall dead ends. Turn right, and then left at the next turn. Enter the first room on the left. Go through this room, and exit using the sliding door in the back of the room, into another hallway. To your left is a basket. Use :r2: to zoom in on it, then :cross: to interact with it. Find the flashback in the Yard

MISSABLE

Exit the house, then turn to the left to head toward the dojo. There is a cherry tree outside the dojo. Walk up to this cherry tree to trigger a cutscene and you will be rewarded with this trophy.

486.jpg Treasure Your Friends (S)

Find the flashback in the Dojo

Enter the Dojo. A cutscene will play involving Fuku-san. Once this scene ends, re-enter the Dojo. On the left side of the Dojo, there is a painting of some kanji. Walk up to it, and use the :r2: button to zoom in on it. A short cut-scene will play and you will be rewarded with this trophy.

c9a.jpg Boy Scout (S)

Help the old lady in Sakuragaoka find a specific house

MISSABLE

Must complete this before 4pm. Leave the Hazuki Residence through the wooden double door in the yard. This will take you to Yokosuka. Continue down the road, and a cutscene will play. Once it has ended, keep going down the road. This will take you to Sakuragaoka. Continue down the road and turn right past the phone booth and the two ladies talking. Continue forward until a cutscene plays. It will be an old woman named Kame Shibukawa, looking for the Yamamoto residence. She will ask you to help her find it. Agree to help. Turn around and head toward Sakuragaoka Park where Kame is waiting for you. Use :r2: to zoom into sign in the picture below. Now press :cross: to read it. After doing so, go talk to Kame in the part across the street.

If you take too long, Kame will leave the park, so as soon as you agree to help, go find the house and report to her.

ea5.jpg Gacha Catcha (B)

Find your first collectable toy

MISSABLE

There is a store in Sakuragaoka called Abe Store. Out front are two capsule toy machines. Interact with either of them, and spend 100 yen to buy a capsule toy. Doing so will earn you this trophy. There are 2 more capsule toy machines outside the You Arcade in Dobuita, and 3 more in another location that is Inaccessible at this point in the game. You only need to buy 1 toy from any of them in order to get this trophy.

1bf.jpg Unexpected Visit (S)

Visit the fortune teller

MISSABLE

Exit Sakuragaoka using the street next to the Park. Thus will take you to Dobuita. Continue down the road in Dobuita until you see the Lapis Fortune Teller shop on your left. See To Be This Good Takes Ages for a map. Enter the shop and pay 300 yen to have your fortune read to unlock this Trophy.

681.jpg I Know More Kung Fu (B)

Learn 5 combat moves

MISSABLE

If you followed the optional step in the “I Know Kung Fu” step, you should know two moves at this point. Leave the Fortune Teller and head to Bunkado Antiques. See Map Below. In the shop you will find 6 scrolls you can purchase. Purchase the 3 cheapest (500, 1000, 1000). open the game menu by pressing :triangle:. Go to Scrolls, and select each of the 3 scrolls you just purchased to learn them. Doing so will unlock the trophy.

d88.jpg To Be This Good Takes Ages (B)

Play Hang-On or Space Harrier

MISSABLE

Head to the You Arcade. See Map Below. Play either Hang-On (100 yen) or Space Harrier (100 yen) to unlock this trophy.

4ZiSzRj.jpg

e0e.jpg Freeloader (B)

Buy a soda for thirsty Wang Guang Ji

MISSABLE

Each new day, as you head to Dobuita, make sure to take the road next to Sakuragaoka Park to get there. There is a soda vending machine after you get to Dobuita on your right. As the days progress, you will eventually encounter a cutscene where Wang Guang Ji will ask you to buy him a soda. Say yes to get this trophy.

098.jpg Gacha Catcha II (B)

Collect 25 Capsule toys

MISSABLE

Make sure to complete this before moving on to the Gainful Employment trophy. You can get it after that point but things start to move more quickly and it is easier to miss.

You need to collect 25 capsule toys from capsule toys machine. It will take at minimum 2,400 yen to complete this step. However, realistically it will cost a good deal more. At times you will receive duplicate capsule toys from the machines, these do not count toward your overall total for the trophy. You receive 500 yen everyday from Ine-san, I would recommend just spending this 500 yen on capsule toys (save your other money for other things). When you start seeing more and more duplicates from one machine, switch to another. Remember there are 2 machines in Sakuragaoka outside Abe Store, 2 machines outside You Arcade, and 3 inside the Tomato Convenience Store at New Yokosuka Harbor District. 1 of the 3 machines there is the same as 1 outside You Arcade so you should only pull from the other two.

a03.jpg Gacha Catcha III (B)

Collect 50 Capsule toys

GLITCHED and MISSABLE

SAVE before getting your 50th unique toy from the capsule machines. The trophy should be awarded as soon as you receive your 50th unique toy from a capsule machine. You can view what toys you have received from the menu by pressing :triangle:. Note that only the toys received from toy capsule machines count toward your 50. Make sure to complete this before moving on to the Gainful Employment trophy. You can get it after that point but things start to move more quickly and it is easier to miss.

Same approach as Gatcha Catcha II. Just keep spending 500 yen a day until you have 50 unique capsule toys. This becomes much easier once you gain access to the machines in the New Yokosuka Harbor District. However, you have to spend 160 yen to take the bus to the harbor, and 160 yen to get back. This leaves you only enough to get 1 toy from the money Ine-san gives you each day. This is why it is good to save your money earlier on.

45b.jpgNeedle In A Haystack(S)

Find Charlie in the tattoo parlor in Dobuita

Story related, can't be missed.

This trophy is unmissable (unless not completed before April 15, 1987 in game). Just progress trough the main storyline to unlock. Once it is unlocked, make sure to complete the next missable trophy.

14f.jpg Practise Makes Perfect (S)

Practise your Kung Fu in the Dojo with Fuku-san

GLITCHED and MISSABLE

Shortly after completing Needle In A Haystack, you will be treated to several cutscenes. The order of these cutscenes will all be the same, though you may have to sleep in-between them depending on the time of day. You will speak to and spar with Fuku-san, then speak to Ine-san, and finally speak to Fuku-san again. Once you gain control of Ryo, after speaking to Fuku-san outside, IMMEDIATELY SAVE! Once you have saved the game, go back to the dojo to spar with Fuku-san again. The trophy is supposed to be granted immediately after starting the sparing session. If it does not, you will need to reload your save and try again until the trophy is granted. You need to get this trophy specifically at this point in the game. NOTE: You can spar with Fuku-san every morning for a while. I would recommend doing so in order raise your skill with your Kung Fu moves.

01d.jpg Mirror, Mirror (S)

Get the letter from Yuanda Zhu translated in Dobuita

Story related, can't be missed.

This trophy is unmissable (unless not completed before April 15, 1987 in game). Just progress trough the main storyline to unlock.

a5b.jpg One Step Closer (S)

Reach New Yokosuka Harbor

Story related, can't be missed.

This trophy is unmissable (unless not completed before April 15, 1987 in game). Just progress trough the main storyline to unlock.

5d8.jpg Break And Enter (S)

Get into Warehouse 8 and meet Master Chen

Story related, can't be missed.

This trophy is unmissable (unless not completed before April 15, 1987 in game). Just progress trough the main storyline to unlock. Note: You have to sneak into this warehouse at night. If you fail to do so without being seen, it will progress the game 1 day. While highly unlikely… a large amount of failures could result in your progressing time so much that you are unable to complete the game. Best practice is to just SAVE, and reload if you fail.

How to get to Warehouse 8: From where you start in hiding, wait for the guard walking toward you to turn to your right. Follow him where he turned and hide behind some barrels. Wait for him to move away. Continue down, and take the first left, then an immediate right. A short cutscene will play showing you found Warehouse 8. Enter through the door.

55d.jpg Stab In The Dark(S)

Find the Phoenix Mirror in the Hazuki Basement

Story related, can't be missed.

This trophy is unmissable (unless not completed before April 15, 1987 in game). Just progress trough the main storyline to unlock. Once it is unlocked, make sure to complete the next two missable trophies.

02c.jpg What's It Worth?(S)

Take the Phoenix Mirror to the two antique shops in Dobuita

GLITCHED and MISSABLE

SAVE BEFORE ATTEMPTING THIS! Take the mirror to Bunkado Antiques and Russiya China Shop to have it appraised. A short cutscene should play as soon as you enter each story. Once you visit the 2nd store, the trophy should unlock. If it does not, reload your save and try again. For me the trophy unlocked during the 2nd cutscene, not immediately upon entering the 2nd shop. See the map below for the exact locations to visit. After getting this trophy, take the mirror back to Master Chen in Warehouse 8.

FwUUJTS.jpg

d9a.jpg Cat Burglar (S)

Find Megumi's kitten when it goes missing

MISSABLE

After taking the mirror to Master Chen, go to Yamanose and visit the shrine where Megumi and the cat usually are. Megumi will inform you that the cat is missing. Keep talking to her until you agree to help. Exit the shrine, turn right like you are heading to your house. Before getting to your house, take the stairs on the left. This will take you down to a few houses. The cat is near a clothesline, on the side of one of the houses.

0f9.jpg Gainful Employment (S)

Get a job at the Harbor

Story related, can't be missed.

This trophy is unmissable (unless not completed before April 15, 1987 in game). Just progress trough the main storyline to unlock. Once it is unlocked, make sure to complete the next missable trophy.

208.jpg Mark's Favorite(G)

Win a forklift race

MISSABLE

Before going to work, SAVE!!! You will have a 3 lap race before work each day. Finish the race in 1st place to get the trophy. You should just reload the save if you do not get it the first time to avoid missing this. Be careful not to hit walls or corners in the race. You will come to a near stop, slowing you considerably.

If you are having issues with this, xkzonstr offered a great tip. Towards the end of the course, you zigzag through a covered area and into the turn before the straight away with the finish line. ALL the racers go around the covered area but you can cut between the beams and do a beeline into the next turn.

510.jpg Fallen Angels(S)

Rescue Nozomi from the Mad Angels

Story related, can't be missed.

This trophy is unmissable (unless not completed before April 15, 1987 in game). Just progress trough the main storyline to unlock. Once it is unlocked, make sure to complete the next missable trophy.

3a6.jpg Hot Dog Moves (S)

Learn a move from Tom at the hot dog stand

MISSABLE

After completing the above trophy, as you continue to progress the story, Tom will offer to teach you a move. This trophy is missable because you have the option to turn him down, not learning the move. Just answer yes to attempt to learn the move. Since you start facing the left, the correct input for this move is :left: :left::cross: :cross: (forward, forward and kick, kick). Failing to do the move too many times will result in missing this trophy.

Beat the 70 Man Battle

Story related, can't be missed.

This trophy is unmissable (unless not completed before April 15, 1987 in game). Just progress trough the main storyline to unlock.

xkzonstr offers some tips for this fight: If anyone is having trouble with the 70 man trophy, a good way to cheese your way through is to hotkey Cyclone kick to :l2:. This will knock non-boss characters in 1 hit.

The three bosses

Camo guy: Parry :triangle: and use kicks :cross:

Stick guy: Use a combination of Tom's Tornado Kick and parrying. His stick has katana-like length.

Massive dude: He has a lunge attack that can be easily interrupted by a 1-2 combo by either punching or kicking. Just knock him a few time and dash around (hold :triangle: and move in any direction) until he lunges.

Great guide! Thank you for the hard work. I just want to point out a few things:

1) Learning the move from Tom can also be missable if you mess up the move a lot I believe

2) If the forklift racer #1 is giving you trouble, there is a part of the track that will shave off a lot of time and allow you cut pass other racers without bumping into them. Towards the end of the course, you zigzag through a covered area and into the turn before the straight away with the finish line. ALL the racers go around the covered area but you can cut between the beams and do a beeline into the next turn. It's a small shortcut but it'll allow you to pass racers ahead of you without getting turned or stopped. Also be careful of the first few turns in the course as there's a few tight corners and objects sticking up that will dead-stop you.

3) If anyone is having trouble with the 70 man trophy, a good way to cheese your way through is to hotkey Cyclone kick to :r2: so the input would be :r2: > :cross:. The three bosses-

Camo guy: Parry and use kicks

Stick guy: Use a combination of Tom's Tornado Kick and parrying. His stick has katana-like length.

Massive dude: He has a lunge attack that can be easily interrupted by a 1-2 combo by either punching or kicking. Just knock him a few time and dash around (hold :triangle: and move in any direction) until he lunges.

If anyone is looking at movesets online or following a text guide like American Arsenal's, here is a translation of dreamcast controls to playstation:

A Kick = :cross:

X Punch = :square:

B Throw = :circle:

Y Guard/Evade = :triangle:

I think "What's it Worth" may be a bit glitchy as I didn't get it on my first time through and I'm having to play through again to obtain it. I definitely went to both Antique shops with the Phoenix Mirror but it didn't unlock

Both shops should initiate a scene the moment you walk in without having to talk to either shop owners. If you triggered both scenes and the trophy didnt pop then it glitched otherwise there's something you didn't do.

I recommend just making a ton of strategic saves throughout your playthrough since sometimes trophy requirements dont register. I had to reload twice for Freeloader but it worked eventually.

Can anyone help. Day 2 is stuck on repeat whilst working the forklift.

The cut scene around warehouse 3 isn't activating

I think you hit the glitch I mentioned in another topic. I don't remember which shift it was on, but I'm guessing it's the second. If you don't get the cutscene before the shift ends, you're stuck and have to restart. I think the problem is not being in the right spot since you can take any route you want; maybe even the direction you drive matters. I think the solution is just to follow the map's route you're given but it might just be a random thing.

Anyway, my key advice is to back up a save after you starting working since thankfully the shifts are broken up by days so it's easy to know when to save beforehand (if you just reset you don't even need the backup but that's just being prepared.) Might want to note this because it was a well-known glitch back in the day and it caught me.

ADD: Just happened to me; fortunately I was aware it could happen. The key event is in shift 2's second half (after lunch.) There are actually 2 routes marked; you want to go the solid line's route. It may just be random, but I went the dotted way first and missed the event.

Practise Makes Perfect

Practise your Kung Fu in the Dojo with Fuku-san

(Glitched, Missable)

After completing Needle In A Haystack above, the next time you sleep you will awake to several cutscenes. You will speak to and spar with Fuku-san, then speak to Ine-san, and finally speak to Fuku-san again. Once you gain control of Ryo after those cutscenes, IMMEDIATELY SAVE! Once you have saved the game, go back to the dojo to spar with Fuku-san.

This happened differently for me. I returned home and before I slept I went home and went to the dojo. Had a fight. After the fight I triggered 2 cut scenes. No achievement. Was forced to sleep. Woke up. Went outside. Had a cutscene about a letter. Went to the dojo. Selected practice and the achievement popped before the practice fight.

Buddy, you've got an issue with the words "Right" and "Left"

Thanks Champ. Ran over them again. I did find one that was incorrect in the "Treasure Your Friends". Also added clarification in the Warehouse 8 directions. Said the guard turns to the right, it is the players right, guards left.

Also, your description lacks a lot of important information, for example of the top of my head, for the boy scount trophy, if you don't go there before 3PM or 4PM the old lady won't appear.

I added the information about timing on that one. If you think of anything else, let me know. Tried to keep the guide as simple as possible, but can see how someone hanging around the house way too long in the beginning could cause an issue here.

... This happened differently for me. I returned home and before I slept I went home and went to the dojo ...

Yes. The guide is making the assumption that you are doing the first cutscene during the day. If it is earlier in the day, the 3 will play one right after the other. The important piece of information there is that right after the cutscene about the letter with Fuku-san, you go straight to the dojo. Glad it popped right away for you! I updated the guide to try to make it more clear.

The forklift race is getting me really mad. JFC

Yeah... Make sure to hit that turn referenced in the guide, it makes it easier... but still challenging. Takes a while to get the controls down to avoid coming to a complete stop during some of those tighter turns.

I've been doing the shortcut. The part that's the most frustrating... I've gotten 2nd place numerous times. If you mess up ONE time, you cannot get first. That guy in the front is fast. You just have to take a more optimal route and if you bump anyone on the way through, you slow down and can't catch up. It's so difficult for no reason.

I'm also bad at racing games... Really bad. Like Burnout Paradise was too frustrating for me to platinum. I just could never get the hang of it.
