Introduction:

Shenmue 1 was a revolutionary game when it first launched on the Sega Dreamcast way back in 1999. The sequel came shortly after then the third game was cancelled around the same time Sega exited the hardware market. After fourteen years 69,320 fans helped kickstart Shenmue III by donating $6,333,295 on July 17th 2015. Now after 18 years, Yu Suzuki is presenting the long awaited sequel in the Shenmue saga.

This trophy guide is broken down into steps based on when you earn the few story related trophies. You play naturally until you've earned the next story related trophy then you stop and focus on certain subquests. What is a subquest? A subquest is when you go and talk to a specific person and perform a small task for them, they're all very short and easy to complete. Subquests are like missable trophies, they can only be done at certain points in the game and you'll have to complete all subquests on one playthrough to obtain the trophy Good Karma. Only a few subquests can be active at a single time. If you progress with the story too far then the old subquests will disappear when the newer ones are unlocked. Each subquest is unlocked as you progress in the story so I will tell you when to pause your story and focus on which subquest. I don't want to spoil the game for you so I will describe the specific story events, spoiler free.

For information about the how to complete subquests and when they are first available to complete see the trophy Good Karma for details. Every time you complete a subquest you will earn a reward. If it's a physical item do not sell it for cash, you need several of the rewards to exchange later for exclusive move scrolls needed for the Technique Master trophy. If they offer you a choice between an item and a fishing spot, always choose the fishing spot because there is no other way to unlock the few hidden fishing spots needed for the various fishing related trophies.

Even though this game has a lot of missable trophies, you can easily do most of them whenever you want once you reach the second city. To make things simple for you I just placed them at the end of each city.

Maps

I created two maps, one for each village/city you go to. Use these maps to help you locate every herb in the game as well as the capsule toy machines and subquests. The maps are interactive so you can zoom in to see more precise locations of each item.

Walkthrough:

Step 1: Play Hide & Seek

The beginning is mostly story progression. Focus on the story until you have access to Sunflower Grove. The game will guide you to go there. Once there you will be required to play a game with some kids. When the game is over you will have to investigate a house for some clues. Once you leave this house you should stop and focus on the first 3 subquests.

In this step you will complete the following subquests:

  • Subquest 01 - "Capsule of Love"
  • Subquest 02 - "The Biggest Catch"
  • Subquest 03 - "Heartbreak Kungfu"

In this step you will unlock the following trophy:

  • Babysitter

Step 2: Learn about the Verdant Bridge

Progress with the story until you seek out Mr. Su in Sunset Hill. When he tells you about the Verdant Bridge you will unlock the next story related trophy. Now is the time to stop and focus on the next 3 subquests.

In this step you will complete the following subquests:

  • Subquest 04 - "Future Dream"
  • Subquest 05 - "Medicine Delivery"
  • Subquest 06 - "Mr. Su's Tall Tales" (you'll have to talk to Kong Mei at Panda Market to learn about Sun before you can do this)

You will unlock the following trophies:

  • Verdant Bridges Secret

Step 3: Learn the Body Check move

Progress with the story until you've been taught the Body Check move by Sun. This will unlock another story related trophy. Now stop and focus on the next 3 subquests

In this step you will complete the following subquests:

  • Subquest 07 - "Catfish Rally"
  • Subquest 08 - "Miracle Mushroom"
  • Subquest 09 - "Ghost Buster Request"

In this step you will unlock the following trophy:

  • Gon

Step 4: Finish up Bailu Village

The final step in Bailu Village is short. Confront the boss then tie up all loose ends in Bailu before climbing the bell tower. The game will warn you if you get too close to the bell tower that by going up the tower you will be at a point of no return, so they allow you to hold off on the story so you can finish everything you want to do in Bailu. Here is where you focus on trophy progress.

  • Collect all herbs
  • Complete the final subquest
  • Fish in all fishing spots
  • Get the high score in the four arcade machines at Panda Market
  • Chop 1,000 pieces of wood (you can still do this in Niaowu too if you want)

Don't forget to purchase the following items that you will need later on.

  • Purchase the Red Radio at Kong Mei's shop at Panda Market
  • Purchase the Magnifying Glass at the Prize Exchange at Panda Market

In this step you will complete the following subquest:

  • Subquest 10 - "Fabled Fabric Finder"

In this step you will unlock the following trophies:

  • Wild Wild Plant Hoarder *Missable*
  • Chopping Master *Missable*
  • Rumored Rodman *Missable*
  • Scenic Point
  • Bailu Village

Step 5: Search Niaowu

Please note that on this step you will get a story related trophy early. Unlike the previous steps, you do not stop here. Continue with the story until you've found the Buddha shop in the picture you found at the Ferry Terminal. After you speak with the kid at the Buddha stand shop you should stop and focus on the first subquest as it disappears when you unlock the next story related trophy.

In this step you will complete the following subquest:

  • Subquest 11 - "Wagon Bus"

In this step you will unlock the following trophy:

  • Dan

Step 6: Reunite with Ren Wuying

Progress with the story until you've met your old friend, Ren Wuying. He first appears after you've completed a long QTE cinema. After the cinema head straight down Vendor Avenue until another cinema plays. After this cinema you'll unlock the next story related trophy. Now you can stop and focus on the next 3 subquests. This is also a good time to stop and get a job at the Ferry Terminal at the harbor so you can earn the Brawling Uppercut 2 skill book from Dejing.

In this step you will earn the following skill book:

  • Brawling Uppercut 2

In this step you will complete the following subquests:

  • Subquest 12 - "A Wise Purchase"
  • Subquest 13 - "Catch the Skipper"
  • Subquest 14 - "Ren to the Rescue"

In this step you will unlock the following trophies:

  • Inseparable

Step 7: Visit Liu Jiao Shrine

Please note that this step you will not unlock a trophy, so pay attention to the story. As soon as you visit Liu Jiao Shrine on Senary Road, you can stop and focus on one quick subquest.

In this step you will complete the following subquest:

  • Subquest 15 - "River Fishing Festival"

Step 8: Stop the thief

Progress with the story until Ryo is forced to chase down a purse snatcher. Completing the QTE cinema will unlock the next trophy. Now stop and focus on the next 3 subquests.

In this step you will complete the following subquests:

  • Subquest 16 - "Vegetable Vigilance"
  • Subquest 17 - "Ryo Plays Cupid"
  • Subquest 18 - "Pink Panda of Happiness"

In this step you will unlock the following trophy:

  • Yi

Step 9: Earn the VIP card

Progress with the story until you've acquired a Golden Goose VIP card. Please note that the VIP Card is different than the VIP Referral Letter. After acquiring the VIP card you should stop and focus on the next 3 subquests.

In this step you will complete the following subquests:

  • Subquest 19 - "Guilin Roll Creation"
  • Subquest 20 - "Niaowu Tour"
  • Subquest 21 - "Hidden Treasure"

In this step you will unlock the following trophy:

  • VIP

Step 10: Meet Grandmaster Bei

Once again in this step you will not unlock a trophy. So pay attention to the story. When you've met Grandmaster Bei, it's the right time to stop and focus on the next 2 subquests.

In this step you will earn the following subquests:

  • Subquest 22 - "Makeover Girl"
  • Subquest 23 - "Stolen Sutra"

Step 11: Finish up Niaowu

Progress with the story until you've reached Niaowu's point of no return (Ren will ask you to locate a boat). The map is fully open for you to explore without restrictions. If you haven't already gotten these various trophies, now is the time to do it since you are at the point of no return. Once you've found the boat you will be leaving Niaowu and can no longer complete these trophies. It's important that you don't speak with anyone about a boat until you've at least fished at all 3 spots in the fishing wharf.

Here is a checklist of what you should verify before you leave Niaowu

  • Completed the last 2 subquests
  • Collect 10,000 yuan
  • Collect 500,000 tokens
  • Fished in all fishing spots
  • Caught 1,000 fish
  • Collected all herbs
  • Purchased 1,000 items
  • Collect 29/30 capsule toy series
  • Completed the Rose Garden arena
  • Acquired all arcade high scores
  • Acquired every move scroll

In this step you will earn the following subquests:

  • Subquest 24 - "Troubled Drug Store"
  • Subquest 25 - "The Greatest Fortune"

In this step you will unlock the following trophies:

In this step you will unlock the following trophies:

  • Old Castle

Use this map I created to help locate every herb in Bailu Village.

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/ps4/168657-shenmue-iii/map/15069-bailu-village

This requires you to collect all 191 herbs located throughout Bailu Village. It's recommended that you wait until you've unlocked the entire map before attempting this so you don't get confused and skip one that you think you've already picked up. The earliest you can unlock the entire map is when you're told to visit Mr. Su in Sunset Hill. Subquest exclusive herbs are not required for this trophy.

Use this map to help locate every single herb

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/ps4/168657-shenmue-iii/map/15070-niaowu

This requires you to collect all 199 herbs located throughout Niaowu. It's recommended that you wait until you've unlocked the entire map before attempting this so you don't get confused and skip one that you think you've already picked up. The earliest you can unlock the entire map is right after you get and use the Golden Goose VIP card. The blocked area behind the Niaowu Hotel will now be unlocked.

Alternatively you can get 195/199 herbs much earlier after you visit Hua Xiao Temple on Blossom Road you will be told to investigate Senary Road. This unlocks the majority of the map. Then pick up the final 4 herbs when you unlock the area behind the Hotel. Just be warned that the first time you go to the area behind the Hotel to be careful. If you get too close to the herb near the largest building it will trigger a cinema. once this is triggered you will have to wait until the end of the game before you can come back to this area to collect the final 4 herbs. Save before going there and look at the herb from a distance to pick it up.

Owned over 500,000 tokens

*Missable*

You'll need to have 500,000 tokens on you at one time to earn this trophy. The easiest way to do this is to earn 50,000 yuan and then exchange them for tokens. You'll unlock the money related trophies while doing this.

If you are trying to get the platinum then you'll have to catch 1,000 fish anyway so I recommend that you just do 1 or 2 fishing sessions each day as you play. You can easily earn 500 - 800 yuan per session. You'll slowly earn at least 20,000 yuan just from fishing. Another method is to sell all of your herbs once you've unlocked the trophy Expert Herbalist. You'll earn another 20,000 yuan this way.

Another way is to obtain the following items in Niaowu and exchange them for the skill book called "Tiger Thigh" at any pawnshop, then sell the skill book to the pawn shop for about 80 yuan profit. You can do this as many times as you want. It's a quick way to generate money, but be warned this might get nerfed in an upcoming patch.

These are the items you need along with the shops that you should purchase them from.

  • Bargain Buddha - Ceramic Arhat (Sitting) 2
  • Bargain Buddha - Copper Statue of a Military Officer
  • Bargain Buddha - Wooden Tathagata Statue (Sitting)
  • Buddha Heaven - Gold Wise Man (Standing)
  • Buddha Heaven - Gold Hermit (Standing)
  • Golden Buddha - Gold Bodhisattva (Standing)

Bought 1,000 items at a store

*Missable*

This will require you to purchase 1,000 items at the various shops in the game. Wait to do this in Niaowu for a much easier time. See King of Gamblers for details on how to earn a lot of money. Once you have all that money, you can go on a spending spree.

There are 25 subquests in the game. 10 are in Bailu Village while the other 15 are in Niaowu. You have to complete them all in a single playthrough to unlock the trophy.

Bailu Village

1. Capsule of Love - Talk to Bai Qinghao in Village Square to activate this quest. This is first available when the Pail Toss bookie tells you about a different bookie. To complete this quest you will need to obtain the rare white fishing lure from the capsule machine next to Fast Kitchen in Village Square. Then he will ask you to obtain the Diamond P from the gem series next to Panda Arcade in Panda Market. After giving them both to Bai, you will have to search for him on the path outside Tao-Get Shop

2. The Biggest Catch - Talk to Huang in Huang's Tackle Shop to activate this quest. This can be completed as soon as you find some clues inside Xu's house after playing hide and seek. This quest is easy, fish for 3 hours and get the largest fish in the tournament. Talk to Huang again after winning.

3. Heartbreak Kung Fu - Talk to Yang Wenliang in Joy Park to activate this quest. He appears after you find some clues in Xu's house after playing hide and seek. He wants you talk to Wei Zhen in Sunflower Grove. After speaking with her, return to Yang Wenliang. Return to Wei Zhen again to complete this quest.

4. Future Dream - Talk to Zhi Mao in the Panda Market to activate this quest. This is available to do after visiting Ternary Spring. Mao wants a soccer ball to play with. Go play Pail Toss at Village Square to win a soccer ball to give to Mao. He will offer either a rare capsule toy or the location of a secret fishing spot. Choose the fishing spot to help you get the Rumored Rodman trophy.

5. Medicine Delivery - Talk to Elder Yeh in Village Square. This can be completed after speaking with Su and obtaining the trophy Verdant Bridge's Secret. Elder Ye will request 4 herbs to make some medicine. Peony, Licorice, Trifoliate Orange along with Chai Hu Root. The Chai Hu Root can be obtained on the path to Langhuishan where you spoke with Shirin earlier. Licorice can be found in front of Tao-Get (this is the one Shenhua showed you). Peony and Trifoliate Orange can both be found downstream of the Verdant Bridge. The Orange is on the grassy hill while the Peony is at the far end near the fishing spot.

6. Mr Su's Tall Tales - Mr Su in Sunset Hill will tell you some stories. This is first available after you learn that Sun and Grandmaster Feng are close friends. Su will tell you 3 different stories, but only 1 story per day. So return again and again for some tall tales. After the third story talk to him again to complete the quest.

7. Catfish Rally - Huang at Huang's Tackle Shop. Another fishing tournament opens up when Shenhua follows you to the Hermit's Nest. The quest is simple. Catch the four different colored catfish. They are located at different fishing spots.

  • White Catfish - The pond next to Huang's Tackle. Try to aim for the greenery in the middle of the pond.
  • Blue Catfish - Behind Joy Park in the River. Aim to the far left.
  • Green Catfish - In the pond at Sunflower Grove. Aim slightly to the right of the starting position.
  • Red Catfish - In the river downstream of the Verdant Bridge. Aim to the far right. Return to Huang after catching the red catfish to complete this quest.

There are four locations but you only need one. There is one along the Western shore of the large pond, just slightly North West of the fishing location. There is another on the hill just North East of Xu's house in Sunflower Grove. A third mushroom can be found in the fishing spot downstream of the Verdant Bridge (where you caught a red catfish). The fourth mushroom is located on the Northern shore of the river, to the West of the Verdant Bridge. Give one to Kong Mei to complete this quest. She will offer you either a vase or a fishing spot. Choose the fishing spot so you can obtain the Rumored Rodman trophy.

This will require you to purchase 1,000 items at the various shops in the game. Wait to do this in Niaowu for a much easier time. See King of Gamblers for details on how to earn a lot of money. Once you have all that money, you can go on a spending spree.

Yes there is a time limit like previous games, but it's very generous. You have until the end of July 1987 to complete the game. That's a little over 4 months, which is more than you will need.

There are plenty of ways to make money in Bailu. I'd recommend fishing if you're going for the trophy for catching 1,000 fish you might as well earn money with it. Just do some fishing at the beginning of each day and only buy what you need while in Bailu and you should have enough money to last until you can exploit the book exchange technique in Niaowu

Seems there is an issue in the walkthrough ?

At the end of step2, the subquest 04 - "Future Dream" is unavailable. I had to go back to a previous save in order to have it.

Are you in the correct spot in the story?

Su is the old man in Sunset Hill. He wears all red and has a ponytail. Step 2 is when you first meet him. The subquest "Future Dream" is still available, I just double checked on one of my numerous save files.

When you talk to Sun in the abandoned temple the subquest "Future Dream" will expire. Meeting Sun happens very shortly after step 2.

Great guide. I just finished the game following the guide and I would have two remarks.

1. One move is maybe missing from the Technique Master moves, which is Thunder Palm. Thunder Palm is received from the monk at Hua Xiao Temple during a story mission. The monk tells you to check out the back room which is at the top of the stairs. There you can see the names of the Kickstarter backers are posted. A cutscene will trigger when you leave the temple where the monk gives you the skill book. I skipped this section during the story. Fortunately it can be obtained at any time before the point of no return in Niaowu.

2. You may have to pay extra attention to two subquests in Niaowu.

One of them is the No. 12 - A Wise Purchase where a lady at the port tells you to find items. Make sure you save before this subquest! The most important thing is that to pick up the items at the lowest price available or the subquest will be failed. I've made this mistake and now I have to restart Niaowu as I haven't got the Good Karma trophy.

The another one is No. 15 - River Fishing Festival. Make sure you make your first contact with the clerk regarding this mission before 11:30AM or it can be the case that the quest will be bugged and you fail the subquest.

After completing any of the subquests I can recommend to check your diary if your completed subquest has the "Completed" status or not.

1. You're right. I didn't notice that was missing because I have Tiger Combo listed twice, a remnant of my first draft. I counted 8 moves and checked for spelling but didn't notice it was the wrong move.

2. As long as you follow the guide, you shouldn't fail "A Wise Purchase". The items you need are listed here as well as the store that sells them at the lowest price.

That's a good call for the fishing subquests. You have to visit them before noon anyway to fish anyway. I'll put a warning in there.

I'll update the guide in a few days after I check something in the game.

I thought I would let you that way doesn’t work anymore as with the lates updated increased the price on the books

Actually it does still work, it's just not as fast anymore. When I tested it I was still able to get a 30 yuan profit from selling the skill book instead of 100 yuan like we could previously. I'll update the guide to reflect the new patch nerf and add some other ideas for generating revenue.
