Devil May Cry 4: Special Edition - S Rank Guide

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone. I made this guide to help players know the requirements for clearing every mission with an S Ranking. You only need to S Rank the following difficulties: Human mode, Devil Hunter mode, Son of Sparda mode, Legendary Dark Knight mode, Dante Must Die mode and Bloody Palace mode. Human mode is the hardest since most of the missions requires 100% Red Orbs found and a no damage bonus to get S Ranking. Heaven or Hell mode and Hell and Hell mode doesn't require S Ranking.

The points required to get an S Ranking for every mission are calculated as follows:

Total points = (Clear Bonus + Style Points) x Clear Time x Orbs Found x Bonus & Penalty x Difficulty

Clear Time Multiplier

S Rank = x3.0

A Rank = x2.5

B Rank = x2.0

C Rank = x1.5

D Rank = x1.0

Orbs Found Multiplier

95-100% --> S = x2.00

75-94% --> A = x1.75

60-74% --> B = x1.50

45-59% --> C = x1.25

0-44% --> D = x1.00

Bonus & Penalty Multiplier

No Damage = x1.5

No Item Used = x1.2

Gold Orbs Used = x0.70

Enemy Handicap = x0.80

Continues = x0.80

Super Costume = x0.20

Difficulty Multiplier

Human = 0.85

Devil Hunter = 1.0

Son of Sparda / LDK = 1.8

Dante Must Die = 3.0

Hell and Hell = 1.8

Clear Bonus

These are the same on all difficulties and represent the points you are given for clearing each mission.

Mission 1 = 500

Mission 2 = 1,500

Mission 3 = 2,000

Mission 4 = 2,000

Here is the proof that LDK scoring system is the same as Son of Sparda:

00:10:37 = S

39100 = S

17554 (80%) = A

No Item = 1.2

Super Character = 0.2

Total Score = 92,081 = A

Total points = (Clear Bonus + Style Points) x Clear Time x Orbs Found x Bonus & Penalty x Difficulty

= (1500 + 39100) x 3.0 x 1.75 x 1.2 x 0.2 x 1.8 = 92,080.8

Mission 2 LDK Rank S requires 108,000.

S Rank Requirement for Bloody Palace

You just need to clear all stages without using a Super Character. You will automatically get 3,000,000+ Devil Hunter Points once you clear the last stage. If you used a Super Character however, your score is automatically divided by 5.

Awesome information. Really in depth. I was wondering if you were planning to do a trophy guide on this, or at least collaborate on one, since I saw in other topics you are playing on PC.

I'm honestly not sure I can do this Platinum, and that's coming from someone that had no trouble doing DMC 1, 2, 3 and the reboot on PS3. I have those plats, but this game... I dunno what it is. I never really got into DMC 4 when it was released, in fact I'm not even sure I completed the story.

I know this list is obviously tougher than the previous entries, but do you think someone that has been able. To get all the plats in the other games have a decent shot at this list?

I think you have a 10% chance of platting this game unless you are a god at it. I plat every dmc extremely easily but the trophies here are insane, plus dmc4 is naturally the hardest game in the serie

I beat mission 1-19 on LDK with S ranking as Vergil (regular version, not super) with almost no items usage, however mission 20 is just bs to get S ranking, because boss dies way too fast leaving me with low S stylist pts. I can reach around 4,800 pts with some luck.

Any tips (Vergil) for mission 20 S ranking would be great.

Hmm mind sharing which moves you use against him? like for example lunar phase air trick to take down shield. Also try to get no damage bonus against him.

Try using weaker moves against the final boss. Taunting and near miss dodging raises stylish points. Don't fill your Concentration bar helps. :)

Not too sure about Vergil but here's how I did it with Lady, seems virtually impossible without items (she can't kill him fast enough):

You can quit to the dashboard to preserve your stars on failed attempts, I'm sure you can do it with only 2-3 Devil Stars but why not just make it as stupid as possible.

I did SSS on some DMD bosses using Lady. Not the best strategy out there but it worked for me. Please check it out. :)

Cool Sanctus approach. I do think the shotgun is the fastest way to bring his shield down but it's difficult to have an immediate followup so pistol could potentially be better for pacing. Also something I noticed but failed to implement is if you just shoot a rocket at Sanctus after you catch him once with the grapple then he immediately falls instead of taking however many grapples. As long as you start charging right as you land you should be able to get off a level 3 rocket as well which does 2 bars of damage.

It doesn't work all the time. Stupid boss doing ragdoll physics after dropping on the ground. Kalina Ann charged shot doesn't have auto-aim when you start charging. Since the boss likes to ragdoll, you will fire the Kalina Ann where he was last standing and thus, you missed! :p

Burst attack right on Sanctus' face works best for me. So it's recommended that you bring lots of Devil Stars in DMD.

Any tips for S rank on human dif at mission 12 as Trish? I'm always either a lil too slow or find too less orbs at mission 12. Could improve at style points a lil aswell i think.

Try Collider and Thunder Blow when you use Round Trip. Collider deals a good amount of damage in a wide area. It builds style quickly. Thunder Blow hits hard as well, and is better suited for single target.

Hey random question

Whats the best way of dodging big bosses attacks or AOE attacks?? I fought against the white frog yesterday. I am playing on human difficulty. I can only roll if I have a target locked but he jumps. And jumping doesnt help much. Also, the ice monsters that jump and hit the ground with an AOE attack.

I guess in harder difficulties is harder to dodge, so I want to learn right now.

The more I play the more I notice that Trish is such a horrible fighter in compare to others. Always get hit by something that I have never seen while playing with other fighters. I wonder why Trish sucks so much? Before I started the game I thought Lady will be in this place but no, definitely NO, Lady is awesome, fast and powerful.

Which character?

Dante - Use Trickster. Dash/air dash when about to get hit. Works all the time.

Nero - This one is very tricky. Roll sideways right before you get hit. If timed perfectly, Nero will do Table Hopper instead.

Vergil - Activate DT, roll sideways and he will do his version of Table Hopper.

Lady - Double jump. Enough said.

Trish - Double jump then divekick facing the opposite direction of where the boss is. (Do not lock-on any target)

The more I play the more I notice that Trish is such a horrible fighter in compare to others. Always get hit by something that I have never seen while playing with other fighters. Tier List of DMC4SE:

God Tier:

Super Dante - Missile pod destroys everything.

Super Vergil - Judgement Cut End destroys everything.

High Tier:

Super Nero - Has great crowd control because max rev is automatic.

Vergil - Good offensive character. Lacks evasion without using DT.

Nero - Buster and Charge Shots are all he needs.

Middle Tier:

Lady - Lv 3 Kalina Ann is a boss destroyer. Lacks regenerative ability though.

Dante - Has huge variety of moveset. Very complicated character to use.

Low Tier:

Trish - She is now a shadow of her DMC2 version. She lacks Stinger, Helm Breaker, Air Raid, auto-tracking Sparda and she cannot throw away Sparda permanently.

It would be awesome if you could include red orb secret locations for each mission because getting red orbs from S-SSS style kills dont include enough red orbs for A/S rank for red orbs

Bascially almost everything you see, destroy it for orbs. Thats what counts. Also those big orbs statues or whatever its called. Don´t count for the orb ranks.

Some stages that have backtracking. You need to destroy same objects again.

Nero has the best way of finding those Red Orbs. His Dangle will glow brighter if there is a hidden Red Orb nearby. Most Red Orbs can be found on any open rooms or previous missions. E.g. In mission 17, Dante can visit the places Nero visited on mission 2.

I am having trouble destroying one of those things that you hit until they are destroyed. It is like a snake. With a shield. I only get to SS Style. Do I need to get to SSS Style? Because I cant :(

Also, this game is a little bit creepy. Monsters made out of clothes? Angels, and a giant bee? I thought Kayrie was Beatriz xD

Like DPatriot mentioned above, those things that you need to be stylish to destroy doesn't count for Orb completion rate. You only need to break them to get a Blue Orb Fragment. If you're having trouble with it, just change characters and try again.

Also, this game is a little bit creepy. Monsters made out of clothes? Angels, and a giant bee? I thought Kayrie was Beatriz xD

Did you know that: DMC1 was originally an RE game but Capcom scrapped the project and it became an original IP of its own. :)

And that's where it all started. The series had a giant spider, a giant monkey, a giant three-headed dog, a giant frogfish, etc. :)
