Batman: Arkham Origins to Feature Multiplayer?

Batman: Arkham Origins will feature a multiplayer mode, say the latest reports.

In a first for the series, rumours say that the upcoming Warner Bros. Montreal prequel will feature at least one multiplayer mode allowing players to control different heroes and villains from the DC universe.

That’s according to Kotaku, which quotes an anonymous tipster. The outlet was able to get confirmation on the presence of multiplayer from another source, but not any details.

For the record though, and take this with a pinch of Batsalt, the anonymous tipster says that, “during at least one section of multiplayer, you play as a member of Joker or Bane's gang while trying to take down Batman and Robin.

“The villains involved—who may be playable and customizable—include Killer Croc, Deadshot, Firefly, Black Mask, Deathstroke, and "some kind of Electroman character."

So, yet another single-player series succumbs to the lure of multiplayer. What do we think?

  • Finally! Hope it turns out well like the Assassins Creed multiplayer - meaning the Core/essential of the SP is portet great in MP My Channel: http://www.youtube.com/COREknaben
  • Woohoo, I always thought the first two games would have been much better if they'd had some shitty, tacked-on multiplayer. Sorry if this sounds like trolling but IMO this is BAD news for fans; just another indication that this game will fall far short of the bar set by Rocksteady.
  • What do we think? This is bullshit if this happens. SP only = day one buy. MP added = won't buy.
  • EWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW.
  • worst....idea....ever... to clarify, im referring to adding multiplayer to an otherwise solid formula!
  • I find it totally unnecessary. Both Arkham City and Asylum were great games that never had any need of multiplayer.
  • fucking every single game doesn't need multiplayer
  • I think it's quite unreasonable for people to say that they won't buy the game day one if it has multiplayer. Just ignore that portion and enjoy the single player(Tomb Raider). However, I do agree that this news is worrying. It just shows how much Warner Bros. are trying to milk the Arkham series for what it's worth. Batman is one game that clearly doesn't need multiplayer(not like it would work in the first place). Oh well. Let's just cross our fingers and hope this game will be atleast enjoyable.
  • At least give it a chance...jeez. Everyone said the same thing about Assassin's Creed and more recently God of War and the MP for them turned out OK. Not entirely sure what they'd do for Batman MP but still no need to be so negative about it.
  • Completely unnecessary. Hopefully it doesn't reduce the length/quality of the main game like ACB was after AC2.
  • @9 Funny, your reasoning is exactly why many are OPPOSED to this MP. Also you forgot Tomb Raider and BioShock 2.
  • Hopefully the multiplayer with be contained to the challenge mode.
  • @11 Dead Space 2, Duke Nukem Forever has MP as well.
  • http://nooooooooooooooo.com/ this is how I feel.
  • Noo just NOOOO!!!! Im not amused >:-(
  • The MP on GOW is shit. DO NOT DO THE SAME WITH BATMAN!
  • You know I am curious as how the MP would turn out, but I don't want to see if it means ruining the game. GOW online was fun for about 2 days then it really became a piece of crap, but the single player portion of the game was still awesome, probably not as good as it could of been if they didn't have mp in it. I should also say that Batman was the first truly good super hero game out there. So with that being said I would vote NO to mp in batman, don't ruin a great game!!!
  • Rocksteady already said during AC and AA that if they made multiplayer then the Sp would suffer for it and they did not want the SP to suffer....thats dedication and commitment to the fans, Warner brothers clearly wanted to have Batman as its milker franchise so they bring out an unnecessary sequel with an unnecessary multiplayer mode added....my answer? not buying it
  • Multiplayer could work if done right. Here's what I think they could do with Multiplayer: - Remove the "now traditional" grindy level-up progression. - Rather than having "matches" have MP in a open world environment. - Player can choose to bbe the good guys, or the bad guys - you earn "points" for for-filling certain tasks. (similar to Burnout's Free-roam) - you use those points to unlock extras rather than levels up to unlock them.
  • *Epic facepalm*
  • Wow, people being negative get upvoted while I get downvoted for trying to remain positive...okay @11, that's funny because I actually enjoyed TR's MP, and despite being dead by the time I got to it, I enjoyed Bioshocks as well. Another one worth mentioning is Uncharteds MP, one of the best online games I have played.
  • If they have multiplayer like saints row the third, I would be down with that. Drop-in gameplay is fun IMO. Team Predator mode would be fun. Plotting moves with your headset, asking for distractions. Odds are it will be multiplayer team-challenges.
  • What do I think? I'm not bothered. If they add multiplayer, after i've completed the story mode I'll try the multiplayer, if I like it, I'll play it for a while, If I don't, I won't. Makes no difference to me. I don't think it'll have any affect on the single player portion of the game either - the only thing it will suffer from is if the single player is crap, it's crap, but everyone will blame it for being crap because they added multiplayer, which wouldn't be the case, if the single player turns out to be crap, that's because it actually is crap, it's not because they've added multiplayer.
  • Plz no.
  • Multiplayer was cool back in the day when it was a competition or it added to the gameplay. There were REASONS people got together for Mario Kart, Super Smash Brothers, or set up LAN parties for Halo. But now that EVERY game on the planet has it, its luster is diminishing. Games that are traditionally single player don't need MP tacked on. You don't need to physically get up and go to your friend's house to play together because you can do it online. There are only so many ways to implement multiplayer that eventually they start to become the same. The only explanation for the MP explosion of this generation has to be DLC. It is SO hard and time consuming to develop quality SP DLC like those for Fallout and Elder Scrolls that companies would rather add a MP mode, which enables map packs, weapon packs, character packs, even color packs to be created which involve much less effort than anything requiring a story. I'm glad gamers are starting to wake up and won't stand for (or won't buy from) companies preying on fanboys and OCD completionists.
  • Series = ruined, if this is true. I hope its a false rumour considering Arkham Asylum and Arkham City are up there on many peoples top games ever list
  • Now they'll project a couple more million sales that they will never make to justify the future layoffs. I'm a huge Batman fan, but it's gonna be hard to buy this one knowing you're supporting this new way that these companies are doing business.
  • Can they stop putting multiplayers modes everywhere ? God of War, who had 5 games without multiplayer, Was great, same thing fo assassin creed. Batman already have those challenges for extra gameplay so why bother with MP ?
  • Aww ffs. Soon there will be no games that only have SP.
  • So this is what happens when you take out Rocksteady.
  • Other game I will not buy... geez WHY all the games now have to have multiplayer? STOP this thing developers and focus more in other important things.
  • No no no! Don't like the sound of MP in Arkham Origins. The two previous games were awesome without it :( Hopefully the rumours are false. Will still be a first day buy for me regardless...Would just prefer it minus the MP!
  • Christ! Have any of you tried it yet? It may turn out great or it could go horribly wrong. Look at Assassins creed mp, everyone thought "this will be shitty". Ok, I admit, i was one of those people, but now i think it is an excellent component in the franchise. Since then when games have announced mp, i wait for actual gameplay and try it out before judging. So just give these guys a chance.
  • @13: The difference with DS2 and DNF is the MP for those had no trophies attached to them so it didn't matter so much.
  • Seriously? Why are devs and publishers ruining perfectly good sp games with mp? What's next? Heavy Rain with MP? OH BOY LET'S WATCH A FUCKING MOVIE TOGETHER.
  • Of course this would happen when RockSteady gave the licensing to another company, it's better off alone as a SP game, now we will most likely be faced with MP Trophies and Challenge Map Trophies for the game.
  • Gotta agree with #33 on this one cuz I was one of those people who hated the thought of AC having MP, but I completely changed my tune on it and I love the MP in that series. The one thing that has me concerned is that this is a whole new dev. If RockSteady was making this game and they decided to throw in MP I wouldn't mind too much cuz they know their own games, but a brand new dev?? I'm gonna have to take the wait and see approach on this and wait for some gameplay footage.
  • @21 I am in agreeance with you. I think if they do MP right then it could be cool. I really liked Bioshock 2's MP as well i REALLY enjoyed it actually. And AC MP? probably the best MP ever IMO. Its a sad world when the people trying to be positive recieve the hate from all the naysayers. I mean really...... All you people spitting negative banter need to find something positive in your lives. Take your negativre BS elsewhere and try to find something in life to be happy about. (insert arguements of money and developer wrongdoings here) GIVE ME BATMAN MP PLEASE!!! and please... the more hate I get for this comment the better. it will just prove my point. Even if I'm the only one who cares. I personally enjoy seeing develpoers take on different forms of MP... Journey anyone? Where was the hate on that game? f-ing hypocrites. Why dont all you Call of Duty fan boys who want your MP left to that francise go back to your youtube recording and leave the optimists alone. I dont even care if I'm a minority here, so bash me all you want haters!!!!
  • it shouldn't have multilayer but most of you are sad saying you want buy it coz of that you blatantly will story still be as good just get over it and most of you who said you wouldn't buy it you most likely will so stop chatting out of your ass
  • If they do it like MGO it might not be that bad.
  • @#38 At last, someone on the same wave length as me lol - I tell you what it is mate, people complain when things are always the same (Call Of Duty, Prime Example), but then the same people moan when "change" occours... People don't like change. All they're doing is adding another element to the game - you do not have to play that part if you do not want to. If anything you're getting more value for your money. Any MP DLC released, again, you do not have to buy it if you do not want to. I can tell you the SP will not suffer regardless of whether they add Multiplayer or not, the SP will only suffer if it is genuinely crap, if it is crap, then it's because it's crap, and not because they'll have added MP.
  • I'm Glad they're adding MP something to do after you beat Single Player .
  • Just NO
  • @35 Thanks for thd laugh, that was good.
  • Its funny that so many dont like MP just because they will have a harder time getting the platinum.
  • The idea of me and my buddy rolling in as the dynamic duo, taking on combat and stealth challenges sounds Fucking amazing. This villain crap, or any other kind of competitive mp will probably fail or feel tacked on in comparison to what the first two offered. I'm all for co-op done well, and the sp-only people can suck it and keep their money, or as intelligent people have said, just not play MP. I played and enjoyed tomb raider very much, and never once booted up the MP. I don't feellike the game was lacking in any way by them adding it, tacked on or not.
  • Another fantastic single player series probably ruined by tacked on multiplayer yay...
  • @19 you pretty much described dcuo lol just saying
  • online challenges would be awesome
  • if this happen get ready for 2 hour SP campaign, don`t screw my batman please I just love this games
  • I knew this was coming when it was announced that Rocksteady wasn't involved.
  • If it effects the core Single player even a little I would be generally upset but if this doesn't have an effect on single player like Tomb Raider or and get this you guys forgot this one.. Red Dead Redemption than I might actually really enjoy the multiplayer. Finger's crossed, god I love the Arkham series.
  • -17 downvotes for the first comment? AC had really surprising and great MP; one of the ones I've had the most fun with. Hell, I bought Revelations more for the MP than the SP, haven't even started the campaign yet. AC looked like it'd translate really poorly into MP, but lo and behold, "Wanted" was wanted. If they have a similar idea for converting Arkham-gameplay, DO IT! It's not like I don't want more excuses to come back to that spectacular fighting-system.
  • MP allows for online pass = mo monay :)
  • I actually thought the freeflow battles would be cool in coop with a buddy. Of course you'd need a lot more enemies but that'd be cool
  • I agree with #55. Batman and Robin doing coop combat challenges together would be sweet. I don't know how in the hell they'll get competitive multiplayer to work, though. Freeflow wouldn't transfer well into PVP.
  • I wouldn't bash this until we actually see what they do with it. Coop combat challenges could obviously work well, but I think that even predator challenges could be a lot of fun in coop. It's unnecessary, but it could be a decent addition.
  • Honestly I'm just more concerned by the simple fact that it's not Rocksteady developing this one.
  • Leave games alone..some games need to stay as 1 player..not MP..ask Capcom what happen when you add stuff that's not needed...Resident Evil:Operation Raccoon City...it was a failure
  • NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  • I just hope and pray that they don't include online-only trophies to this game.
  • I don't understand why every game needs multiplayer but as long as the single player portion is still amazing like the first two Arkhams then I don't really mind it. Definitely won't stop me from buying it.
  • Think about it - the team has a given time to complete the game for release. EVERYTIME a game get's MP, some of the story/creativity falls short in the SP story. Bioshock made things right with this new Infinite but AC mp sucks! This has nothing to do with plats! If you wanna get plat, you'll just do some grind but that's not the biggest issue for me. BATMAN:AO - PLEASE STAY SP ONLY!!!
  • Doesn't matter to me really. If it sucks, I won't play it. If it works (i.e. UC2 & 3) then I'll give it a try. It's not the end of the world. Let's just hope they do it right and it will blow our socks off.
  • #55 is right, if its co-op it might work out well. Either in challenges, or maybe they could do something like DI:RT were you can play the story with some friends, but it's not a requirement for gameplay unless you want a platinum. I would definately call myself a trophy whore, so yes i don't like horrible MP trophies like "win ten online matches in a row" but the co-op ones are fun when you find a competent partener.
  • M P is just a way to get more money from single player games and use the online pass. I'm sure they are gonna have non sense like the season pass.
  • Just thought I'd put it out there that "The Last of Us" has been getting perfect scores from almost everyone, and if not perfect, it's very close to it and it still has a fantastic MP and SP. So I'd say to give it a chance.
  • No, oh please God, no!
