Ubisoft Rumoured to be Eyeing THQ Bid

With THQ recently filing for bankruptcy, it appears that Ubisoft is potentially considering a bid to buy up the ailing publisher's assets, should THQ work through its financial troubles. Should Ubisoft acquire THQ's assets, it would snatch up the company's brands and development studios in the process.

Although THQ is on the market, there are no planned studio or office closures, and a so-called 'stalking horse bid' with an investor essentially means that the publisher's debts will be written off, enabling the business to continue operating, making for a more desirable acquisition.

Sources say that Ubisoft is currently in lengthy talks with THQ and presumably new owners Clearlake Investments regarding the brokering of a deal. Allegedly, Ubisoft is looking for a 'bargain buy' according to sources, and is happy to wait until THQ sells off specific assets like it did with Midway four years ago.

Ubisoft's acquisition of THQ - if the reports from sources turn out to be legitimate - would mean a takeover of five studios, such as Volition and Vigil with intellectual properties including Saints Row, Darksiders, Homefront, Red Faction and licenses like WWE and Warhammer 40K. As with any rumour, take this with a pinch of salt, but for Ubisoft, acquiring THQ's brands and studios could be an enormously savvy move.

Please let this be true... Whoever it is that ends up with THQ, don't let it be EA.

I wouldn't mind Ubisoft to take care of some of my favorite THQ franchises.

If it has to be someone, Ubi is one of the best choices.

Ubisoft, the only publisher that actively hates their customers... have a read up on some of the stuff they've tried pulling off as regards copy protection on their PC games, barely any better than Sony's music CD rootkits.

There's still 2K, TakeTwo and Activision that might be interested at least.

I honestly think Ubisoft can do some justice with the Saints Row, Red Faction, Homefront, and Warhammer series. Not sure about the WWE games, It seems to me that WWE will buy out the WWE Games studio

(a) Because they had the most restrictive DRM on PC, which was "alway online" for a long time and is now reduced to "always online if you want the uncut content game". With AC3 (and probably FC3) you also *need* to link your PSN account to uPlay if you want to play the MP.
If they can, I'm sure they would pull the same account-binding bs with the SP as the PC is now experiencing.
(b) They are no better than Activision if it comes to milking franchises and overpricing games / DLC.
(c) They keep bringing up total bs as excuse for their behavior - like "We don't have copies to give away" as answer to the 3-activations-limit (without restoring option) for Anno 2070 / 2070 A.D.

Ubisoft has single handedly brought me to console because they own half of my favorite IPs (other half is ironically owned by THQ ^^) and now they start the same things over here. I haven't bought a single PC game from them since and including AC2, for which I remorselessly canceled my pre-order back then (long before I owned a console).

@17: TakeTwo Interactive is the mother of Rockstar Games, 2K Games, and 2K Sports and the Vivendi is supposed to sell the Activision from Activision/Blizzard.
Just FYI ^^

I'm glad Ubisoft might step in. All I care about is that EA and/or Activision do NOT get their greasy destructive hands on THQ's stuff. However I would cheer on Rockstar or 2K Games as well but Ubisoft can afford more then them at one time so Ubisoft will probably end up taking it if they decide to.

@23 Why all the bitching about Activision I admit they're cheap arse but at least their games are decent.

If you think a game/DLC is overpriced then don't buy it.

I wonder if THQ going under is anything to do with darksiders 2 being so shit n such a let down?
I personally hope ubisolf don't get It as there my most disliked studio, activision I think would do THQ's games the most justice. Who ever gets it though I just hope I finish warhammer 40k before they cut servers

I hope that THQ doesn't end up needing to be bought, but if it is then hopefully it will be by a really great group like Ubi, at least we know that we will be getting THQ's games and not have them fucked over by any others that might buy them up like EA or Square Enix.

Im really hoping to get to play Homefront 2 for one.

@32, if Sony will buy it that be great for us Playstation guys but their will be alot of negative action against it since the games of THQ were for Xbox before. There's no way Sony will make a game for multiplatforming. But I would care less if it was on PS3 cause we get it

I find it weird that no one is even considering that Ubi would pull off an EA and buy out the assets and that may include IPs and future IPs and just merge the dev teams in there swallowing another study from the gaming industry.
