Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance
The Phantom Pain - Dissecting the Trailer. Is it a New Metal Gear Solid?

At last night's Video Game Awards, major announcements were rather thin on the ground. And while we're hyped about the prospect of Dark Souls II, one announcement trailer grabbed our attention, and the attention of internet forumites and rumour-mongers the world over. It is of course, 'The Phantom Pain', what we thought to be a new IP from a new studio could in fact be a new Metal Gear game.

It was everyone's initial thought when they saw the trailer for the first time, but when the Moby Dick logo popped up, it threw us a bit. And the absence of a Konami logo (or any publisher logo for that matter) is also odd.

But who is Moby Dick? Apparently they're a new studio founded by CEO Joakim Mogren operating out of Stockholm, Sweden, according to the company's website. Joakim Mogren, some keen-eyed conspiracy theorists have noted is also an anagram of 'Kojima' and M-'Ogre'-n. Project Ogre is of course something that Kojima Productions has had in the pipeline for some time. Mogren is also the name of a football club in Montenegro, which is where the opening of Platinum Games' Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance takes place.

A closer look at the trailer reveals a character who looks uncannily like Solid Snake, although he's possibly younger than old Snake in Metal Gear Solid 4. He awakes from a coma with a prosthetic hook replacing his left arm, before the facility he's being held in is attacked by troops.

A man with his face fully wrapped in bandages helps the man who may or may not be Snake (hey, it's still speculation for now), as he finds himself crawling across the floor. It's our first chance to really have a proper look at the mysterious protagonist. Hold on a sec? Isn't that Solid Snake?!!

Soldiers storm into the facility, dragging the other patients away while Snake (let's for the sake of argument just call him Snake for now) strives to make his escape.

Later in the trailer is where the real meaty stuff starts to emerge. Is that figure in the fire Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater's main antagonist Volgin? He certainly looks a lot like him, especially in his combat suit guise when you fight him in Snake Eater's final moments before you face The Boss.

Speaking of whom, the figure riding on the flaming winged unicorn that appears looks vaguely like The Boss, which would fit the Volgin theory. It's entirely possible that Kojima could be planning to resurrect the insane bosses from Metal Gear Solid 3, who were arguably some of the best in the series. It would certainly make a lot of sense...

The closing moments of the trailer also raise more questions than they answer, echoing questions in the trailer itself. Am I in a dream? Am I in Hell? Quite possibly if any of the bizarre deamlike images are anything to go by. A giant whale swallowing a helicopter whole? Snake might need to lay off the cheese before he sinks into his next coma.

And with that the trailer concludes and the logo pops up, before showing us one final tantalising glimpse of the Snake lookalike (or indeed Snake himself) rolling around on the floor. The Phantom Pain? Oh, Kojima-san, you certainly know how to push our buttons! With Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance and Metal Gear: Ground Zeroes in the offing, could 2013 be the year of Metal Gear? For now, nothing's official, but there's just too much compelling evidence in this trailer that can't be ignored. Suffice it to say, we'll be keeping our eye on The Phantom Pain.

Kojima could be the ultimate troll. Imagine how much it cost just to have this show at the VGAs.

It's not MGS 5 or MGS 6. Konomi and Kojima wouldn't let a unknown studio make a MGS game. MGS Rising doesn't count as MGS game.

It would be quite awesome if this ends up being correct, since both Joakim and Mogren are actual names used in Sweden as well xD

Its Metal Gear Solid 5, says so in the trailer. No point in arguing it... also, Kojima is in love with Big Boss/Naked Snake, so that's the Snake we're dealing with.

Flaming visions could be just that... visions, nightmares, blurring reality with such things could happen to a patient that looks like he's been through a lot. Dude that's with him? Could be Frank.

And, finally, @PeterSmith82 ...sorry, but MGR:R is a MG game. Its canon, part of the saga and approved by Kojima. Not to mention he's already saying he wants to work with P* again.

But yeah. Silly Kojima cracks me up. "I don't want to be known as the Metal Gear guy..." *releases trailer for MGS5 after a trailer for MGS: Ground Zeroes, after making nothing but Metal Gear games for the last 10 years*

It must be MGS 5 because Kojima said that he wanted MGS 5 to have a flashback on The Boss story so those might be The Boss and Volgin, man i can't wait for this!

#17 That makes a lot of since not that you mention it.

I'm just adding to reasons why it is Metal Gear Solid V, when the protagonist is looking at his prosthetic arm you see a white flower petal. Anyone remember the ending to Metal Gear Solid 3? I thought you did. Another thing, which you'll see everywhere, is the quote from the Ground Zeros trailer "From Fox, two Phantoms were born." Which would be Big Boss and the man with the disfigured face. Not to mention the whole Metal Gear vibe from the whole trailer. This Moby Dick Developers site is pretty young too, check it out. And lastly, the protagonist looks just like Big Boss.

Look at this, if you haven't already:

The Wiki page is very empty, which tell me that Joakim isn't a real person, if he was, then the page wouldn't look so empty.

And I think it is Snake, maybe the game is a dream Snake is having and you play it, or maybe it's a new IP, or something completely else?

I don't really see a ton in the trailer that says it is a MGS game and if it is one then it can't be solid because of the virus he would be alot older looking. Couldn't really be Big Boss either, that and the whole not having a clue what is going on makes it either someone else or they don't remember alot.

Also remember Snake's look was based off of Snake Pliskon from Escape from LA/New York, so just because this guy looks like it too.

Though damn that was strange a whale on fire eating a chopper.

For a while I started thinking it might be Liquid in this game but then I thought, he lost his right arm after death so... there goes that theory. I'm sticking to my original.

@21, good point about the "From Fox, two Phantoms were born." part. remember the ground zeroes trailer with the guy and his scarred face, then the helo with XOF on it.

scarred face = bandage-wrapped head
bandages on eye = naked snake's missing eye
