PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale (PS3)
Opinion: PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale - The Roster Problem
Written Friday, December 07, 2012 By John Robertson

Video game crossovers are not easy. The blending of various franchises, that mean more or less to different people, is a recipe that can easily go wrong. Too much of one ingredient and it's overly skewed, too little of another and it lacks flavour. Don’t include another and it's almost not worth playing, at least from a nostalgic indulgence perspective.

It's a trick that the likes of Capcom and Nintendo have gotten right; with the Marvel vs. Capcom and Super Smash Bros franchises, respectively. Based on a solid foundation of characters that have been developed and digested into the public consciousness over decades, the rosters that make up the crossover games from the houses that brought us Ryu and Mario are nothing short of bountiful. They liberally spill over with recognisable faces and treasured heroes.

Enter Sony and the latest such crossover, PlayStation All-Star Battle Royale, a game that is surprisingly playable but questionably cast. More than the aforementioned Marvel vs. Capcom and Super Smash Bros, PlayStation All-Star Battle Royale is a celebration of the works of its publisher. The 'PlayStation' in the title leaves little doubt that Sony is pitching this as a best-of the console's offerings.

Fine in theory. Make sure you deliver.

Sony is a relative newcomer to the world of video games compared to its crossover fighter peers, and it shows in the depth of its combatant roster. At best, the Battle Royale inclusions are a mixed bag. Brilliant additions sit aside those that boggle the mind and others still whose inclusion can only be the result of commercial incentive, rather than the fan service they should be. Those less enticing selections take the place of other, more deserving, candidates. Unfortunate.

We'll start with the good. PaRappa the Rapper, Kratos, Jak & Daxter, Sackyboy and Nathan Drake do a fine job of reminding us of PlayStation past and present. They're also very different to one another, offering a diverse range visually and mechanically. Being able to answer those silly questions such as would Drake be able to scratch Kratos, and could PaRappa rap his way to victory over Sackboy and his potentially limitless creations, are exactly the kind of thing that games like this should aim for.

Sly Cooper, Ratchet and Clank and Twisted Metal's Sweet Tooth also fall into this category. These are characters synonymous with the PlayStation brand, they’re part of successful franchises and they mean different things to different players.

Other inclusions are more difficult to understand and highlight the shallow pool Sony has to draw from when it comes to iconic characters. Killzone's Colonel Radec is perhaps the best example. Yes, Radec is from a PlayStation exclusive brand. Yes, Radec is known to players of Killzone. Does Radec, though, have a unique/strong enough image to warrant being a part of a game such as this? No. Is anyone asking the question: Drake vs. Radec, winner? No.

Radec is a functional part of narrative design within the world that he inhabits in Killzone, he has not come anywhere near to transcending that series and weaving himself into the consciousness of the PlayStation community at large. Therefore he does not deserve inclusion. Similar arguments can be levelled at Fat Princess, MediEvil's Sir Daniel Fortesque and the bizarre choice to include inFamous' Cole McGrath in both 'good' and 'evil' form (and yet there's no Sackgirl to go along with Sackboy).

These characters are filler, they puff out the roster to an acceptable size but do little to enhance it. Character selection in these games should be equal parts personal attachment and moveset... I find it hard, impossible perhaps, to believe that players choose to play as Radec, McGrath and company because they're fond of them. Radec is used a lot online because it's possible to spam his long range moves to great effect, not because everyone is desperate to see him strut his stuff in a new setting.

At least, however, the above intruders are PlayStation characters. You'll not find them on a Microsoft or Nintendo platform anytime soon. The same can't be said for everyone. Commercial incentive has worked its magic and cast a spell strong enough to invite Bioshock's Big Daddy, the new Devil May Cry's re-imagined Dante and Metal Gear Solid 2/Rising's Raiden to the party.

Raiden over Snake seems odd, until you consider that Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance is just around the corner. Bioshock is a game more closely associated with Microsoft thanks to a release schedule that saw it come to Sony's console over a year after it debuted on Xbox 360. However, with Bioshock Infinite on the way the promotion makes sense (even if there doesn't look to be any Big Daddies in the series' third game). Similar story for Dante and the upcoming Devil May Cry, which means we get the newer, blander, 'emo' Dante as opposed to the 'real' Dante.

With Thieves in Time not far away, an argument could be made for Sly Cooper as an advertising angle. For sure, Sony had that in mind when putting the cast list together, but the thieving raccoon gets away with it thanks to the goodwill built up with the decent PlayStation exclusives released just after the birth of the current century.

It's a shame that Sony saw fit to populate its roster with individuals that have no qualifications for being there, aside from the potential rewards to be reaped from giving them an extra PR boost. It goes completely against the playful nature of what we're led to believe this game is about.

Furthermore, there are a number of candidates more deserving to make the squad. Where, for example, are Crash Bandicoot, Spyro the Dragon and Lara Croft? Crash was once hailed as the PlayStation's on-again, off-again, mascot. Spyro played his part in appealing to the hordes of tweens and teens eager to get their teeth into more platforming adventures. Tomb Raider was one of the reasons Sony's first console was such an enormous hit in the west.

All of these characters were at some point exclusive to the PlayStation, all have been shamefully overlooked by the powers that be. And what of the hordes of slightly less well-known faces that are part of the PlayStation family? The Yakuza series' Kazuma would have made a brilliant addition and appealed to that franchise's loyal fanbase. The blond-haired presenter of the Buzz series would have been an off-kilter stable mate in keeping with the game's quirky outlook and let's not even get started on the hordes of Final Fantasy characters that are unique to the PlayStation One era.

Put Cloud and Sephiroth in Battle Royale and it will sell more. Fact.

The inconsistent quality of its roster prevents Battle Royale reaching the heights that its gameplay suggests it might. It's interesting that the game's final boss, Polygon Man, represents the struggles Sony has had in defining its own set of recognisable characters in the way Nintendo has so successfully done with Mario, Link, Pikachu and friends.

Originally conceived by Sony's American division, Polygon Man was supposed to become the PlayStation brand's mascot in the land of infomercials, pick-up trucks and foot longs. However, Sony of Japan hated the design and Polygon Man was swiftly dropped from advertising campaigns. The fact that Battle Royale sees various other characters fighting to rid the world of him is indicative of the internal conflict the company has had in establishing a champion.

It's unfortunate that that conflict has resulted in only about half of the Battle Roster being deserving of the 'All-Star' tag and forced Sony to include minor first-party characters and various third-party ones.

Of course, you will be able to come up with your own list of characters that you would prefer to see. Perhaps you're a person that even celebrates Radec as the game's finest character, not just because of his moves but because you like the guy and can't get enough of him.

Therein lies the problem with these crossovers; they will never be just right. Everyone wants different characters, and there's not enough time in the day to include them all. Certainly, I don't envy the guy tasked with signing off on the final selections. Every inclusion and every omission is going to rub someone up the wrong way, some even enough to bother writing about it.

Video game crossovers are not easy.

PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale is out now, and you can read our verdict here.

Cole was a great choice so don't act like your opinion is so good. Sure it was stupid to put fat princess and a few others but come on Cole McGraith is awesome

I see your point about Sir Dan being included and him not being a huge Sony name, but MediEvil is pretty much a cult classic at this point. I remember fans even petitioning to get him to be a representative before the game came out. Either way, a few weeks before the launch of PSABR, I just got really put off by it. The character selection honestly did make it seem like it's one big advertisement and maybe even better characters could have been selected. Hell, if Kazuma Kiryu was a playable character, I would have scooped this game up day one.

@1 - I don't think the inclusion of Cole is in dispute here. It's the fact that both his good and evil incarnations were included.

For the most part I'm happy with the choice of characters. The only ones I'm feeling iffy about are the one that aren't PlayStation exclusives, such as Big Daddy and Raiden (even though I'm a huge fan of BioShock). I just think they should have stuck to exclusives. It's the same with Smash Brothers, added Snake and everyone else was weird to me.

That said, I would have loved to see a Chimera from the Resistance series make it in. When the game was first announced the ones I wanted to see most was that and Cole McGrath. I guess one out of two ain't bad, eh? Especially with him having both karma versions available.

Also excited about seeing Emmett join the game. I'm a huge fan of Starhawk. :D

Its not like superbot actually holds the rights to any of the characters that people think should have been in the game. Did they not even consider that perhaps say activision wanted too much for superbot to use crash/spyro, or any of the other companies: SE/SEGA wanted too much as well?

The simple fact, for me at least, is that if this game had Crash, I would have probably bought it by now.

For now though, I can wait for the price to drop or for a version that has all the dlc

surprised you guys didnt mention spike from ape escape. I thought his addition was excellent seeing as ape escape was a huge hit for its time plus a pretty fun game in itself exclusive to playstation.

I do agree with you guys on most points though. The neglect of iconic characters for more popular ones is disappointing. But lets not forget money issues. And the fact that cole mcgrath got 2 characters i feel you hit the nail on the head. Sackgirl is only a alternate costume yet evil cole is a whole character, its ridiculous.

@1 what are you talking about? His complaint was the fact that 2 coles were present. We really only needed 1.

I think sony sold out to advertisement. Bioshock infinite, metal gear rising, DMC. These games' characters were included mainly because, lets face it, they have upcoming releases. Im still trying to figure out why the hell raiden replaced snake, but i guess sony cares about having people buy these multi-platform games on THEIR console rather than appealing to the public. Its kinda sad when you think about it

I just wish idiot characters like Sweet Tooth and Radec had been nixed, and that Sir Daniel weren't so dang slow. I'd love using him but he gets destroyed by everyone but Big Daddy because of his laughable lack of speed, without the remarkable strength to balance it out.

@9 The only ones that are exclusive to Sony systems are the original, Origins, and Book of Memories. Considering that those last two are subpar, I don't think SH could be considered a good inclusion despite how much I like the other games. Still, BIg Daddy and new Dante got in so I guess it doesn't take much to be considered a Sony All Star.

ok, first of all, Sucker Punch themselves request that both Good and Evil Cole be in the game because they see them as 2 different characters. Secondly, it is NOT up to SuperBot who does and doesn't get into the game. The rights to characters are owned by the companies that created them and if they refuse to let SuperBot use them then there's nothing more they can do. Don't blame SuperBot, they're doing the best with what they have.

I thought having both Coles was weird, but their characters do end up being different, at least with the circle button moves, enough to the extent that I've determined I prefer Evil Cole over the softie.

@12 you are somewhat wrong, it is up to Superbot about who can be in the game as long as they have purchased the rights, Sucker Punch didnt force them to use both Coles.

cole, radec, and the big daddy are part of the reason I want this game. All came from games that connect in my mind with the first playstation I ever bought, and I had a blast with those games, and loved those characters. Two different coles is strange; they should have done a transform function or something. And I agree that crash, spyro, and lara should have been in there.

@14 Sony can't pick what ever characters they want. Many of the games you listed they down own the rights to and they need to get permission from the company that does own it. Square has FF. Sony asked Activision if they could use Spyro and they said no. I am sure that is the case with most, if not all of the games you listed.

Is the guy who wrote this article dumb or what? I can tell you why all them characters are not in. Crash & Spyro belong to Activision who are greedy, Lara, Cloud & Sephiroth belong to Square Enix who are also greedy. Snake was left out due to being in Super Smash Bros. Brawl although Old Snake is being considered for DLC and Buzz appears in a stage. Get your facts right before writing an article. Also, It may be new Dante but just be bloody grateful we got Dante, Same goes for Raiden. In the end, SuperBot probably did go for these characters but got refused, New Dante & Raiden were chose by their respective companies.

@9 Snake was in Super Smash Bros, Raiden hasn't been on this type of front.

From a fighting game players perspective, Sony did a great job with this game. 2 Cole's are no different from 2 Ryu's (you still love it). The catch is that Ryu has never been out of his element, Cole has, and now so have all these All-Stars. That's what makes this game awesome. And those videogame companies that didn't throw in a character (if not for advertising purposes) are missing a chance to stake their claim amongst greatness. Who's not to say dlc is not in the works, who knows, but for now this game can not be denied as it stands.

According to Omar Kendall, both Cole MacGrath and Evil Cole were originally one character, and that the player would start out as Cole, and that the player's actions would decide whether or not you would play as Good Cole or Evil Cole. However, Sucker Punch felt that the way that the Cole character manifests, he is two different people, and they "felt it would serve his character better as two separate Coles and they really pushed for it."

they could put anybody in it, it wouldn't make any difference because the game is poor.
smash bros got it right because of what made it fun, psabr left out all them elements and left it a dull hollow shell, i would rather have it as a total clone than what it is.

@26: Sucker Punch should have played their own game, then. Evil Cole and Not Evil Cole are the exact same character. One just has tar on his head.

But wow, amazing to see how full of themselves and how deluded the people at Sucker Punch are. Not only do they make shit games, they don't even realize they make shit games.

Holy shit John.. You really hated this game didn't you?
I wouldn't say the roster is out of place at all. There are supposed to be serious characters messed with happy fantasy characters, and it does work. Haven't you ever seen Kirby VS Snake in Smash Bros or Roll/Tron/ServBot (all coincidentally from Megaman) VS anyone in MVC2?
Give Sony a break! I don't even see how you can compare Smash Bros to Marvel VS Capcom anyway since Smash Bros (much like Battle Royale) is a brawler and MVC is a straight up fighting game.. a very good one.
The first Smash Bros had it's problems and Sony can't get the whole thing right but their roster isn't so bad. Sure we may have 2 Coles but we don't have 6 pokemon and pallette swaps of Mario (see Luiji and Wario)and Princess (See Daisy):p
Plus Battle Royale will get DLC surely.
All in all, the roster is not the problem at all.
It's the lack of a Health/damage bar. Relying on special attacks was their mistake. Because if you miss, you're essentially fucked =/

I both disagree and agree with certain points made.

Disagree:
I'm thrilled Radec and Big Daddy made the cut. Killzone is a fairly renowned series as far as I know... KZ2 had quite a huge following when I was playing. Radec seems like the best rep from the series in my opinion. Choosing one of the main guy

con't:

main guys would be too similar to everyone else who wields a gun.

Same goes for Raiden vs Snake. Snake would be too similar to use. Raiden seems to have a hugely different play style potential (mind you, I havent plyed the game yet).

I've also never asked, nor heard it asked, would Drake scratch Kratos. That particular battle hasnever crossed my mind.

As many others have said, the cast isn't entirely up to these guys. I'm sure they asked for Crash and Spyro, etc, but werent able to procure them. If they simply dismissed them, shame on them, BUT, if they tried and couldn't, then I think it's wrong to speak bad of them.

I'm sure Dante will get his old costume when they release alternate outfit DLCs.

Agree:
Cole could have been one guy.. but again, do they play differently? Are they noticable as different characters? I'm not sure, but I could see how they could be potentially different.
Anyways, I think the cast is great and I look forward to playing it :D

What they should have done is added more characters from each game. Instead of having just one character from one game add multiple characters like Captain Quark, Sig (Jak & Daxter), Zeus, Sully, Snake, etc. Plus add more third party and more PS exclusives characeters. AND FUCKING GET CRASH BANDICOOT AND SPYRO!! It doesn't matter if they are third party charcaters from anothe rocmpany now but HELL, if the title says freakin Playstation "ALLSTARS" Battle Royal, you best believe Crash and Spyro should be in there

@35

Good call. They could have done what Dissidia did and have a couple of heros (at least in the second one) and the main bad guy of each game.
Zues would have been fucking awesome!!

They def should have had the Cole's as one character. Even if they have a slightly diff move set, the character model is still ridiculously similar.
Plus they could have had Nix and that other bitch and The Beast. It'd have been awesome.

Sir Daniel being in it was a great thing for me. They really should have either upped his damage or increased his speed. Seems unbalanced.
As far as Raiden goes, they really should have had Snake too. I doubt their play style would be similar as Raiden is a stealth sword user (like Grey Fox) and Snake is a stealth commando (not that he had much stealth about him in smash bros aside the famous box lol) and they could have had Liquid and Solidus which would be a winning combination..

These brawls are missing a big issue.
Smash Bros Brawl did very well. So did Marvel VS Capcom 2. The key to it was a gigantic roster. It keeps the game fresh. Devs worry about balancing but sometimes one character should brutalize another. See Juggernaut VS Roll in MVC2 lol.

Still my main beef is the lack of health or damage bar. The specials (while nice) shouldn't be the focal point. It should be brawling.. >_>

Radec is a Helghast. And Helghast are 10 times more interesting than any killzone protagonist. And they are the "mascot" of the Killzone series, so it makes sense.

This article makes several points that make no sense. First they mention that Radec was a bad choice. Killzone is a big title and had to be included and when you think of Killzone, you think of the Helghan. The most well known Helghan is Radec so he is justified. I agree with you about "good" and "evil" Cole, but in regards to Fat Princess and Medievil, I disagree. Fat Princess was a successful title, and AllStars is meant to have characters from all platforms, including PS3. Being able to actual play as Fat Princess is great, since you can't in her game. Sir Daniel's Medievil series was also popular, sure there hasn't been a Medievil game in a while, but in SSBB there hadn't been a Fire Emblem game (I didn't even know of this franchise before SSB) or Earthbound game or Kid Icarus game. You also mention that the third party characters don't make sense and that Crash, Spyro and Lara Croft should have been in because they were PS exclusive at one point. Well Dante, and Heihachi (Tekken) were PS exclusive at a point. The Metal Gear Solid series began on Playstation. You said why not Snake, well you are partially right in saying it was because of advertising, but also Snake was in SSBB and Superbot didn't need another comparison to SSBB. Even Bioshock Infinities has been favoring PS3 as a system over Xbox, plus it doesn't matter that Bioshock didn't start on PS. Sonic was in SSBB yet he was a DIRECT RIVAL to Nintendo at one point. Big Daddy was on Xbox first, the DIRECT RIVAL, to Sony yet he became multi-platform so why not include him if 2K is ok with it.

I feel that the arguments in this article are hypocritical, especially since it is compared to Super Smash Bros and Marvel v Capcom in the beginning. I hope you agree with the points I made above because at the very least I have a thing or two right.

Well i don't have so much problems with the rooster, my only concern and reason that i didn't buy the game are the stages/arenas, i really hated that Superbot mixed differents franchises in the stages, why not just normal stage that represent one franchise like in Super Smash Bros or Dream Mix TV?

I think the problem with the roster isn't the characters that are there, but the ones that are missing. Let's face it, every game like this is going to have some characters people aren't going to agree with due to personal preferences. I'm just hoping that this is just a prologue to see the kind of welcome this game will get before they invest more into getting the more expensive characters the public want.

Have the game and I simply love it. There people in the game isn’t the prob. The prob. is that every keeps saying it’s SSB. If you are stuck on one game you’ll never be able to try new ones and enjoy. If you go back to the 1st smash, there roster was small. There 2nd game might have been larger, but the costume characters were everywhere. This game, ever person in the game has their own move set. I’m happy to see Kat and the dude from Starhawk get added. Fingers crossed for more amazing people like, maybe someone from White Knight.

Radec is the most known person in Killzone. Killzone is one of Sony’s biggest shooters. Why wouldn’t you have the most known guy in the game? Hell, I’m pissed they killed him in Killzone 2. The 2 Coles…I kinda agree. I think I would have liked to see Cole not be one person, but maybe Evil Cole be DCL? Hell they could have even thrown in the vamp Cole as a pack. I just get the feeling that when you play, if you are bitching about someone in the game it’s because some people piss you off when fighting, or you can’t use them. Trust me; I’ve seen every person in this game kick ass, if used right.

Dumbest article i've ever read.

1.Crash and Spyro ARE NOT owned by Sony, most they can do is ask for them, if they [activision] said no (Which actually hasnt been confirmed for crash, spyro however, was confirmed that Act. would not let him be used because of skylanders)then nothing can be done.

2.Sucker punch basically said "Both coles or no coles"

3.Big Daddy was added almost as a 'gift' to superbot, and Ninja Theory pulled a sucker unch with dante

4.There is a Sackgirl, granted, its an alt costume, but whats REALLY the point of adding sackGIRL as another CHARACTER even when its not REALLY an actual character? retarded.

5.Nintendo hold's a partial contract on Snake, people assume because of smash brothers, raidens the next best thing, get over it.

6.Superbot/Sony does NOT call the shots, so stop acting like any character couldve gotten in with the snap of their fingers, even if sony does own the companies

I've a great deal of sympathy with this article, but it does miss one very important point- as others have said, it was not as if Superbot had carte blanche with its choices and deliberately opted for poor ones or sold out to marketing. They were very much restricted in what they had access to beyond those IP's under Sony's ownership- which is ironically a problem the Nintendo haters predicted when the game was officially announced.

Also, I think the article is very harsh on Radec and Sir Dan. The latter is a cult hit and Radec is the most recognisable face of the Killzone series. This also extends to Cole, who I know a lot of people (myself included) were personally looking forward to play. The argument about having *both* Coles in, however, does stand.

However, all this being said...I'm not going to lie. The roster, for whatever reason, is a pale shadow of what it could have been, and a major turnoff for me in buying the game. I'm also very sympathetic to the argument that if Sony knew (or could have known) it could not do the crossover "right" - i.e. include many of the characters who are absent and who everyone would expect- it should not have done it at all. That might sound easy in hindsight, but it's still true.

the game itself is pretty decent i enjoy it, they're a couple of flaws, i.e the crossover of stages i dont really agree with

the roster in my eyes is pretty small when you do compare it to SSBB (think they had 40 characters compared to PSAS 20), which i hope is seen to in the now proposed sequel.

characters i agree with - Kratos, Parappa, Sweettooth, Sly, Only 1 Cole, Ratchet, Jak, Heihatchi, Raiden & Sir Daniel : mainly because of their heritage to their respective titles and being huge icons

characters i dont agree with - Fat Princess, the necassity of both Coles, Sackboy, Nariko & Big Daddy : because they havent the experience of the Playstation universe

characters that should be in - Crash, Cortex, Spyro, Cloud, Tidus, Squall & Kazuma for a definate and should be highly considered for the next game
