THQ Delays South Park: The Stick of Truth as Financial Troubles Continue

THQ has delayed a number of games following continued poor financial results.

South Park: The Stick of Truth has slipped from March 5, 2013 to a vague “early fiscal 2014,” while Metro: Last Light and the PC-exclusive Company of Heroes 2 will now hit in March next year.

The announcement was made during THQ’s second quarter financial report last night, during which the extent of the publisher’s continuing struggles were outlined.

Although higher than its own expectations, THQ’s quarterly net loss was $21 million. It has lead the publisher to appoint Centreview Partners to find “strategic and financing alternatives” for the ailing company.

If THQ’s position is not turned around, analysts are predicting an equity sale and failing that, bankruptcy.

Despite this, President Jason Rubin is putting on a brave face, saying that the game delays will ensure the highest possible quality.

“Our fourth quarter releases are the first titles that I have had the ability to materially impact, and experience told me that the games needed additional development time to be market-ready,” he said.

“I firmly believe releasing our fourth quarter titles without extra time for polish in the current environment would lead to underperformance that could in turn lead to future additional capital shortfalls.”

The trouble is, delaying games adds to development costs and means that the publisher has less money coming in.

“Extending development schedules in order to make the best possible titles also has financial implications,” continued Rubin. “Yet there can be no doubt which path has the greatest chance of leading to the long-term success of the company.

“We must follow the course that generates the highest quality games, and will establish THQ as a mark of quality for the consumer.”

Hope for the best and that they can hold out. It would be a shame of Stick of Truth doesn't live up to it's potential.

Just because THQ is having issues, don't believe that the game will get cancelled. It's more likely that assets will be sold and published elsewhere.

I know people are gonna hate on me, but I hope this does get canceled. I don't think South Park deserves a video game. It's bad enough it's a cartoon which appeals to kids and the show is 100% immoral. We already have other people as bad influences on ours kids, we really don't need cartoons and video games doing the same.

@11 yeah, you're probably gonna get some hate for your comment.

Firstly, SP is NOT aimed at kids. Secondly, get a sense of humor and if you don't like SP, don't watch it. Personally, I find it hilarious - the more immoral the better.

THQ really bet the farm when it came to Darksiders II, and it didn't do nearly as well as they needed it to. It sold well, just not as well as it should've.

I hate to say it, but I think 2013 may see the doors close on THQ unless they can somehow pull their fortunes around. It's a shame, because THQ's games (both console and PC) have nearly always been good. I hope they don't go under, but as things stand, I can see it happening very soon :(

@11 One video game getting cancelled isnt going to save your kids from this bad world. Get a fucking grip. Some of us have been waiting for a game like this for 15 years.

@11 - "South Park is an American animated sitcom created by Trey Parker and Matt Stone for the Comedy Central television network. Intended for mature audiences, the show has become famous for its crude language and dark, surreal humor that lampoons a wide range of topics."

What part of "INTENDED FOR MATURE AUDIENCES" do you think is meant to appeal to kids?

For those who have kids of their own and voice the same concerns, maybe they should spend a little less time complaining and a little more time preventing their children from watching a sitcom that is clearly intended for adult audiences.

Looks like the costs of producing games for console hardware is killing off too many devs and publishers this gen.

@20 Yeah research and developement are really expensive, I don't want to hate on call of duty here, but that's why they always revamp the same engine year after year, they must have paid a nice amount of money for this engine with call of duty 4, now that they know the engine is good, they only create new stuff with it. But with games like that (SP, SR3) both are built on a different engine, that's where they burn all their money. No wonder why so many publisher are doing smaller games and its a mode that will keep evolving.

On topic, I really hope this game doesn't get canceled.. delayed can be ok but not canceled, I was really looking forward to this. Cmon THQ its just a big turd to poop then you'll be fine!

Like other people I've been waiting for this to be released and I hope it doesn't get canned bad enough with a longer push back. This could potentially be the best South Park game out there but without the opportunity we might not see this... hopefully it'll go back on track.
