Irrational Nabs Gears of War Exec Producer as Multiplayer Modes Slip from Bioshock Infinite

This evening has seen a flurry of announcements and reports surrounding Bioshock Infinite and the studio behind it, Irrational Games. 

Following the exit of a couple of high-profile staff yesterday, Irrational has announced that Gears of War executive producer Rod Fergusson has joined the team, while multiplayer modes have been dropped from Bioshock Infinite.

Let’s start with Bioshock Infinite’s multiplayer. According to Kotaku, two planned co-operative modes have been been consigned to the cutting room floor.

The first was a tower defence-type game in which miniature characters did battle against waves of toy-like enemies in an “old-timey arcade machine.” Which sounds odd.

The second apparently had the working title of “Spec-Ops,” borrowing the basic structure of Modern Warfare game mode, with players teaming up against enemies in levels inspired by the single-player campaign.

Irrational Games’ creative director Ken Levine responded to the report saying “As I’ve always said we are experimenting with things, and only if they are good enough will we put them in the game.”

The news comes following the departure two key members of Irrational’s Bioshock Infinite team, director of product development Tim Gerritson and art director Nate Wells.

Levine said, “We never like to see a guy like Nate leave because he’s been here for a long time but it’s been 13 years and I think sometimes people want to spread their wings.”

Meanwhile, as Gerritson and Wells leave the team, Rod Fergusson joins. The Gears of War executive producer revealed on Twitter, “Yes it’s true, I’m leaving my family at Epic to join my new family at Irrational in Boston starting tomorrow.”

Alongside Cliff Bleszinski, Fergusson was one of the figureheads of the Gears of War series, following a spell of eight years in an executive producer role at Epic Games.

So wait...this means they tested MP/Co-op, didnt like it and now its completely scrapped? Awesome!

Can we just call this game of the year now?

I can understand people not wanting a competitive multiplayer component like Bioshock 2 had, but to decide against cooperative? I've always been a fan of cooperative multiplayer as not only does it encourage playing with friends but working with those friends to accomplish a goal.

If this game is going completely single player, then I have full respect for them, but I don't see a high level of replay value. And games like that end up price dropping after a few months. So what's the real motivation for buying at release besides the possibility of Bioshock 1 on-disc being a limited run exclusive?

The most important thing to note now is that the delay was all for nothing, if the rumours were to be believed about the delay being caused due to time needed for the MP component.

If there is no mulitplayer anymore then good i dont' like multiplayer added to good single player games though i have tried uncharted and assassin's creed mutliplayer some of it was hard and some easy

Personally, I don't mind the delay. It is rather a positive outlook on the game. Not many companies delay their games releases. This just shows that Irrational is trying to make Bioshock Infinite the best it can be. Yes, I like co-op and have always been a fan of it. However games don't need multiplayer to be considered fantastic. Whatever the outcome, I believe Bioshock Infinite will be awesome. And a co-op and multiplayer mode would be "icing on the cake" (if there happens to be).

At first i had doubts about this game, but now that they scrapped the multiplayer (which I hate), I am doubt free and will get this game for sure!!

No multiplayer it sounds great now we can't except to someone stabbing a knife to your back (I don't mean you can do that in this game is just an way of talking) and now I know they will not do this, but someday this game could be free for PS Plus.

Great. I'll never plat Bioshock 2 because of that stupid mp, just as I'll never plat AC: Brotherhood, GTA IV and F1 2010, because they have mp (not because I think their mp's are lacking or anything).

I agree with many others here. Bioshock does not need multiplayer, competitive, or coop. Stick to the excellent story and all will be well.

Bioshock don't need MP mode like some other games do to sell them.

I think this is good news, more time to spend on the main part of the game what people would play the most.

It say's that two MP modes got cut, not that the game wont have multiplayer entirely. I don't understand why your all celebrating, the two modes they mention are not even remotely close to the typical competitive multiplayer game mode formula you find in most Fps games. All this say's is that It will not be having Tower defence or a co-op mode similar to spec-ops...

i have nothing but respect for ken levine. hes known to be not much of a MP fan anyway, the guys a creative genius, lets see him do what he does best. id imagine the MP idea was only thrown in because 2K wanted it for easy $$$, but ken levine being the man he is (like i know him..?.lol) seems the type of man who wouldnt do something like that "just cos all the games have it these days and you gotta fit in", but only if its good, something he can be proud of, at least seems like that in interviews.

i have nothing but respect, they tried it on for size, but didnt like it, the finished product will be better and more pure because of it. speaks volumes about irrationals attention to detail and commitment to making a top notch product.

like we need another competitive MP with capture the flag, licence to kill, tower defence, death match, team death match..... shit, i feel chronic fatigue just mentioning all that same-same boring old crap. THANK GOD for no MP in bioshock infinite!!!!

i just feel sad that so many people will write it off now cos no MP, yet every MP in every game is just the same old money spinning bull-sh!t **except assassins creed (and uncharted was better than 85%), the rest is just the same old boring formula.
