Batman: Arkham City
Rocksteady Reportedly Working on Silver Age Batman: Arkham City Prequel
Written Wednesday, July 11, 2012 By Richard Walker

In what could be a bit of a shock move, Rocksteady Studios is apparently considering a prequel story for the follow-up to Batman: Arkham City, taking a break from that game's cliffhanger ending to visit the caped crusader's 1950s Silver Age comic book era, when Bats' cowl was bluer than usual.

According to Variety, the Batman: Arkham City prequel could take players all the way back to the Dark Knight's very first encounter with the Joker, with its visual style inspired by the 1950s comic books. Want an idea of what that might look like? You can already play as 1970s Batman with his blue cowl and cape as an extra DLC skin in Arkham City.

Will Rocksteady retain the dark and brooding nature of modern day Batman if these rumours prove to be true, or will we be seeing the 'Pow!' 'Zokk!' and 'Newt!' daftness of the '60s Batman TV series starring Adam West? We'll wait and see whether Warner Bros. confirms any of this before we start speculating too much.

I'm very conflicted about this...Rocksteady has proven twice they can make superb Batman games, but the 50's Batman has also proved too many times its just too cheesy!

It'll be one weird leap from a rather adult Batman experience to age 5-10 Batman.

They should have left it at two and gone on to do another franchise. Not trying to troll, Rocksteady did VERY well with the Arkham games but I think this move will pigeon-hole them as "the batman studio" rather than a studio with any versatility.

" 'Pow!' 'Zokk!' and 'Newt!' daftness" This is what I want as long as it has the '60's theme tune

So it won't be part of the Arkham continuity?

I'm not sold at all on this. Knowing Rocksteady, it will probably be a great game, but from someone who thought Batman was a joke as a kid until I stumbled over The Dark Knight Returns, I'm not at all excited. I should be, considering that Arkham Asylum and City are some of my all-time favorite games, but I can't feel a thing.

Not a thing. If this would have been about something like Arkham World/Anarchy/Absolution or something, I'd be more shaky than a jello high on sugar, but I'm..not..feeling it with this concept.

Oh this can work. I see endless possibilities for this already. Although you have a point @2, they have also proven themselves to make fantastic games with phenomenal story lines, so I don't think they will have a problem making games that isn't Batman. I hope this is true. They are the only studio to do Batman RIGHT!

A prequel could make a great game, but only if they keep it dark and atmospheric like to other two.

Base it on 60's Batman, have all the cheesey effects, have the themesong, and have Adam West voicing Batman, and I'd probably die of a gaming related orgasm...

as much as i absolutely loved arkham asylum and arkham city, i have my reservations about this. however, in saying that, i also have very high expectations that they can turn the 1950s batman into an amazing game/story line, and stay away from the cheesy one liners that we're accustomed to from that era.

I can see it working, but being a lot different from their previous titles. At least visually. Could be a great idea.

Nice, I was actually getting a bit tired of Arkham (City anyway, I beat Asylum about 5 times and would still go back and play it again now), so a whole new style sounds awesome. I can't imagine them doing the cheesy stuff, maybe they could have cheats for getting a certain amount of riddler trophies, and one of them could be the 'baff' sounds and what have you (old Batman theme music, Adam West voiceover maybe? :))

I don't see the point in a prequel now. Joker's dead, let's just keep moving on. The last thing I want is to hear about is Joker committing a boner again.

I believe in Rocksteady, i think they will make a fine game. But i dont want to see a prequel also. Move on. I like the idea of bringing in the start of the rest of the heroes. Give me the Super Friends.........er, I mean Justice League.

The Batman comics during the 50's were very sci fi based. Stories usually revolved around Batman fighting aliens on another planet, fighting them on earth, helping aliens on another planet, helping aliens on earth, and dealing with crooks that got hold of alien weapons and technology. Hopefully they don't go in that direction.

My thing is this - if Rocksteady goes with the First Wave vibe, it would truly be epic. For those of you who don't know, it's set in the 40's with him alongside the pulp heroes In the first years of him taking up the cape and owl BEFORE the gadgets. So for them to do that kind of feel would and could be of epic awesomeness.

The 60s and 70s TV Batmans (Batmen?) were cheesy as hell. But if they did this along the lines of Batman Year One, it could be a winner.

I'm the biguest Batman fan and i absolutely love both arkham games and even tho playing a game based on the clasic Batman I think this is a let's milk it move. Instead of doing this they should work on another arkham I don't even care if it takes 4 years.

@29

I see a slight contradiction in your post. You say this is a "milk it" move, yet want them to work on another Arkham game. So people are never satisfied. It's not just you, but the lot of people here in this particular thread.

Rocksteady already proven that they can do a Batman game...twice! Doing a noir type, or even the "cheesy" 60's version as you all put it would still be fantastic. They haven't even confirmed that they are doing it and some to most of you are already bashing it. Damn shame. I guess Rocksteady winning numerous awards with both of their games winning GOTY means jack crap.

As for the Ninja Turtles thing...I really wish they would have picked that up. It would have been really nice for the Turtles to make a true comeback.

I thought the first two batman games were epic but instead of golden age batman how about batman beyond. In the batman beyond universe the joker is already dead(different circumstances but either way he's dead) and you can bring back conroy to play old bruce wayne.

I don't know if I'm going to like this game. I think it's a great idea to do a prequel since the Joker died but I'm just not sure. I was hoping they make a Batman Beyond game. But we'll see what happens.

#30 I absolutely love both arkham games and I'm sure they will do a good job on this one my thing is why do why not another arkham game they will do this one and probably another arkham in the future that's why I think theyr milking the fact that they can do it and yes I just contradicted my self coz I'll probably buy it but another fear ov mine is the gadgets in the game i don't think I ever saw 1950 s Batman with such badass gadgets but we'll see I just hope they don't multiply the ridlers trophies even more I think 440 is plenty. And on the rocksteady getting numerous awards well they deserve more in my opinion they should get greatest game ever made.
