CryEngine Three Years Ahead of Unreal Engine 4, Says Crytek

Crytek boss Cevat Yerli reckons that Epic’s Unreal Engine 4 is doing things CryEngine was doing three three years ago.

Epic publicly showcased the latest iteration of its tech at E3 last week. Many were impressed, but not Yerli.

"The only thing I can say is that CryEngine 3 already exists at the quality of Unreal Engine 4," he said. "It already exists for three years now.

“You can go back three years ago to the GDC videos. What we put out there is pretty much what Unreal Engine 4 put out now. And what many others are doing now too."

The Crytek boss believes that CryEngine has a lot more to offer too.

"We haven't really put out our latest stuff yet," he said. "Pretty soon you're going to see the next iteration of CryEngine, and I'm not putting a number behind it, just the next iteration of CryEngine. Very soon.

“But we already said, CryEngine 3 is next-gen ready since three years ago. We stand by that. If I look at what people call next-gen technology now, it's what we were seeing three years ago.

Yerli continued, "We already had massive particle systems, we already had GPU rendering, all these things. Deferred shading. We had tessellation already since we shipped Crysis 2. We already had DX11.

“We didn't just talk it up as tech demos, we have games that are shipped and are doing it.”

  • If CryEngine is so good they claim it to be, why isn't EA using it in all their games...?
  • I personally feel Crytek is a little full of themselves. They constantly claim how gorgeous their games are and how far ahead their engines are, yet Beyond: Two Souls and The Last of Us look as good if not better then Crysis 3. And on top of that, you have David Cage (CEO of Quantic Dream) who has openly stated he doesn't want a new console because the PS3 hasn't been fully utilized yet.
  • Cool story Crytek. Now make Timesplitters 4.
  • Is it just me, or does this guy seem to act like a toddler that doesn't feel he's getting enough attention? First, he comes out and says blocking used games would kick ass. Then, he says all their stuff will be free. Now he says their engine is years ahead of Unreal 4. I...I don't think I like this guy very much.
  • If that is "3 years ahead" then I'm not looking forward to games 3 years from now
  • Sorry for double post, but it came to me-who this guy reminds me of. Billy Mitchell. The pompous ass from King of Kong-Fistful of Quarters. Amirite? ;)
  • @4 Spot on, he's a fucking burk. Crytek have finised C3 early (get C1 and C2 together and squash them together, hey presto) and now they're badmouthing everyone else. Why? Because just like Crytek were saying "we're still finding new ways of using CryEngine3", he knows that in a 3 years people are going to be "finding new ways of using Unreal 4" and everyone will swing for that. Add to that scenario the obvious fact that Epic will have built Unreal 4 to work on next gen machines already, so what Yerli is left doing is trying to big-up old tech which is approaching capacity and isn't designed to run on the machines coming in 18 months time. He can fuck off, play with his shitty F2P crap and keep his price-fixing, preowned-blocking ideas to himself cheers.
  • How many years ago?
  • By calling it "next gen" is he offhandedly defending himself for such poorly optimized games that chug worse than I do when trying to run the track? The UE4 isn't just about graphics. Its so great because anyone can use it. Its so easy to develop on, and its ease of use lowers development costs for 3rd parties and results in higher quality games more frequently. The only engine in my mind that can compete with Unreal in terms of use and dynamics is Frostbite, and Frostbite still has a lot of work to be done.
  • LOL it took them how long to get DX11 working for PC users? The original game was not released with it. Yerli talks too much. I like Crysis but damn man, shut up and have a little grace.
  • " CryEngine was doing three three years ago."
  • Crytek is start into annoy the hell out of me. I totally agree with #4.
  • right. remember how awful the cry engine 1 ran for awhile need a high end machine and then all sudden mid range was looking as good as high end.
  • This Crytek guy seriously needs to stfu. I like Crysis but the company is starting to destroy my outlook on it, and I LOVED Timesplitters... But I almost don't want them to make another because they will fuck it up and make it into some kind of CoD clone with Monkey's... Since CoD is apparently the damn template for every FPS now (its getting ridiculous) and has been for awhile makes it a safe assumption that TS4 would end up a victim as well and it will definitely disappoint the hell outta me. But anyways... Crytek needs to shut their god damn mouths and just make they're games, that CEO or whatever of theirs is to prideful and egotistical, people like that aren't made to lead and never do properly. Unreal 4 is better they CryEngine3 and that will be easily proven on the next gen consoles. And like someone else said above, Beyond: Two Souls and The Last of Us look better developed and graphically then Crysis 2 does, and they aren't even using Unreal Engine 4 so what does that make CryEngine3? Maybe CryEngine3 is a good engine, just need better developers, who knows. Rant Over. Lol
  • Fell out of my chair laughing. xD
  • This is just sheer arrogance, it's fine to have pride in your company's work, but show at least SOME restraint and don't trash a rival's work in the process. It looks like there are people in every industry who are either too arrogant or too stupid to realise that comments like this can actually have detrimental effects in the long term.
  • @4 you took the words right out of my mouth.
  • ... I feel both Epic, and Crytek are a little full of themselves. Especially when concerning Epic. I used to really be a big fan of theirs (especially when they first released UnrealTournament) however, they've devolved into a bunch of whiny loud-mouth pisants, seriously. All they do these days is spend time gloating about their own work(s), their engine, and why they only cater to consoles anymore really. Because, "piracy" is taking their money. (-_-") Crytek just seems to feel that their Crysis titles are literally pure gold pressed platinum, and not but the very lords themselves can match their creativity... (-_-") Simply put just ignore the industry. All they do is whine till they get what they want... Wait they already do. Thanks nulls. (Not sarcasm. Thanks for being a dumbass. You know who are, all of you.)
  • @9 i agee. frostbite i a very powerful engine. i've played battlefield 3, 1943, bc1, bc2, and moh (2010). and their as good if not better then crysi2 is. and to top it off grfs is as good if not better then crysi2 is too and that is using the the yeti engine (although it is a heavyly modified version).
  • lol,. good for crytek! :) i liek CryEngine 3,.. its best engine for games. :)
  • I think this guy is running on Cry Engine... All he seems to do is whine and cry like this.
  • this guy talks rubbish a lot good luck with your F2P model.
  • With their history of badly bugged games and lack of post-game support, I can't see them lasting very much longer, especially when their F2P experiment falls flat on its face.
  • Crytek coming off as a bunch of arrogant PC Master Race ass holes, as always.
  • Look at meee! I am awesome!
