What appears to be the first in-engine screenshot for Beyond Good & Evil 2 has emerged online today, showing the long-gestating sequel for the first time since alleged gameplay footage leaked online back in 2009.

Originally announced way back in 2008, the majority of news that has followed on Beyond Good & Evil 2 has largely been rumours and speculation, but it seems the game is well and truly back on the radar following yesterday's revelation that it will be coming to the next generation of consoles.

"That decision would just distract us from that objective. I can say that it's a very ambitious game and we need some tech to achieve that ambition," said BG&E2 creator, Michel Ancel. "We focus on the game. We create it first, then we'll see what can run it. We don't say 2013 because we don't know when it will come. We're working to create a great game and it needs more tech."

Apparently, the game will also be somewhat like Mirror's Edge, as well as taking cues from Ubisoft stablemates, Prince of Persia and Assassin's Creed. "Prince of Persia and Assassin's Creed are closer to what we have in mind with the control of the character in a third person perspective," said Ancel.

  • Loved the first game. This one look like it might be more in depth/detailed. Looking forward to this!
  • If that's a screenshot of how next gen games will look, I'm disappointed...
  • Looks Amazing! So Excited For This!!
  • @2 What's wrong with it? Not quite sure what you can truly surmise about next-gen power from a still of a game in development.
  • Oh seriously, this can't be done on this gen? Please, just give us the damn game already!
  • @4 Well, for something that is deemed "next gen" I was expecting... well, just more basically, I mean, that screenshot looks like something from MGS4 but with a little more colour, and MGS4 didn't exactly have the best environment detail... it actually looks like a bog standard current gen screenshot. And I'm sure they could emulate next gen graphics by using a PC with roughly the same specs as what's been rumoured, I know they're just rumours and could end up being entirely different, but looking like that, I see no reason for it to not be on current gen consoles... there's nothing special there, even if it IS only one still image...
  • @2, 6: Watch the video from yesterdays news about BG&E2, it looks a lot more impressive in motion. The texture details and lightning are great in the still, take this, add smooth motion and npc reactions and it seems you pretty much reached the limit of what is possible by now. But yeah, from what's rumored about next-gen's tech ... it's apparently on par with a mid-class gaming PCs. So it's not that big of a deal.
  • The footage is obviously when it was for ps3/360, this footage is outdated, I'd assume. I just hope the game steps up, the last game felt good but...I felt like I was "too old" to play, even the stealth sections were a breeze and I unusually suck at them...
  • @7 That's what I mean, Uncharted 3 had scenes just as detailed but only in certain places where there wasn't too much action, the true test is when they have way more characters on screen. AnvilNext can render 2,000 characters apparently, who knows what it could do with more resources? The price of a mid-class gaming PC is still higher than a brand-new console, so I guess we need to look at performance-per-dollar rather than compare whole machines. TBH I'm hoping the next gen will allow developers to do more towards AI, reduce the amount of waypoints and static scripting and replace it with proper autonomous agents, many games get boring before you're half-way through because enemies are merely copies of each other, each type reacts exactly the same and it becomes easy to "break" them. Then again, I'd hate to have to write a trophy guide when the game constantly reacts to your playing style!
  • WTF! This looks nothing like the first! In a good way :D
  • @9: What I wanted to say with the PC comparison is, that what everyone refers to as "next-gen" is actually some generations of technology behind ;) IIRC the Unreal 3.5 "Samaritan" demo needed 3 high-end graphic cards to run smoothly. This was Radeon 5000s time, one of the GPUs which is rumored to be used in the PS4. Everything above this would be a real next big leap, provided the developers actually use the ressources. After all, the change from DirectX 9 to 11 won't be as big as from 7 to 9. And like you already said: Graphics can be pretty good with current gen, so we will likely see better physics and lightning. And it's about time we get some decent anti-aliasing for the PS, some games just hurt my eyes. AI will always be script based, otherwise it won't fit in a everday cpu and RAM configuration.
  • dammit, meant Radeon 6000. A small mistake but it matters ^^
  • Closer to control of AC or PoP? I hope they don't ruin it... its not like this is a new series. Draw from and build upon BG&E - it was awesome. Don't experiment (see: ruin) with this series! And, quit toying with me, too... lol.
  • I actually pre ordered the game when it first came out on Gamecube and loved every minute of it.
