Ex-Call of Duty Dev Robert Bowling Unveils New Studio

Former Call of Duty community manager and creative strategist Robert Bowling has formed his own development studio, called Robotoki. Currently hiring talent, the new studio expects to reveal its first project later this year. It’s developing for consoles, mobile and PC.

According to Bowling, Robotoki wants to focus on “creating a universe first, experiences second, and game mechanics last” so that it can produce “experiences that transcend platforms and genres and allow our players to connect to our world, their characters, and gameplay via any medium”. Which all sounds rather grand, doesn’t it?

“However, how they experience the world is unique to their device,” continued Bowling. “The mobile / tablet experience should not mimic the console or PC experience, it should be additive to it, not supplemental. Allowing them to support their console and PC experience, continue their progression, but by experiencing the world in a meaningful and unique way.”

“Our focus is creating an experience that is no longer strictly single player, strictly co-op, or strictly multiplayer, but adapting the strengths of each of these into a unique experience that is fueled by the actions and contributions in each.”

Bowling reckons the studio will provide “an environment where the creative vision holders hold complete control over their work and could guide and maintain it from concept to execution.”

Bowling became the public face of the Modern Warfare series thanks to his work as community manager and creative strategist for Infinity Ward. However, he announced his departure from the role in March. Looks like this is what he was up to.

“creating a universe first, experiences second, and game mechanics last”

...isn't that what makes or break a game in the end?

The last thing I want is a game with a BIG AMAZING STORY THATS FULL OF AWE AND WONDER that is a joy to watch...but sucks s*** to play.

The point of a game is to play it...not watch and "experience" it with crappy mechanics, MECHANICS FIRST!

(and yes gameplay is needed but mechanics is the foundation, story should be last, to me personally)

Judging by how 'creative' he was with the CoD games, I doubt I'll be even remotely interested in whatever he's making now.

Everything that went wrong with MW3.

Good luck Robert, you'll need it...

You can escape the corporations which run franchises into the ground, but you can't escape the vociferous but ultimately inconsequential opinions of the little gaming trolls (above). Yeah, you didn't like COD, we get it, now STFU.

Good look to him, I hope Robotoki can stick to those principles of not letting the purse-holders turn good games into cash cows. The only other mainstream developer-led, IP-owning studios are Mojang and Valve, it will be interesting to see whether Robotoki can be as successful.

god no. it should be story first, gameplay second. I won't play a game thtat has the worst plot ever (a game that doesn't try to have a plot like borderlands is fine) but games like mw2 that had the worst plots ever are one of the worst games I played

@3 bang on. The game has got to be fun to play first and foremost, and the mechanics have to work well. An amazing story should back up the game mechanics, not the other way around lol.

actually not surprised by this, and i give it three years.. TOPS.. before he and his company fails. given that his opening statements say he is more worried about the 'experience' than the gameplay, means i am probably going to avoid every game this company produces.

Instead of Robotoki they should've named it DoorKnob Studios, or KickStand Games... Something with a bit more flair.

@3 Uncharted is a perfect balance of those things. I just doubt that they could make a game as good as Uncharted

@18 no, that name is already taken. I found Duty Calls to be largely more entertaining than CoD.

I say good luck to him. Sounds like he wants to create a cross platform MMO to me. To all the haters here, you would be wise to save all that nonsense till Robotoki gets a game out and you've at least tried a demo or something. I just love how people want to bash something that's not yet in existence. "Complete Ignorance"

Do people really think he was on the dev team for IW? He was basically the ear to the public, and often got cock-blocked. He was all for us getting free CoD4 and MW2 maps on MW3. I'll go ahead and say that's probably one of the reasons why he left, as well as what Elite has done to CoD gamers: separate everyone into 'classes' and neglect Wii and barely acknowledge PC's existence. You can tell why he left Activision through what he hopes to accomplish with his studio.

But of course, continue to be idiots and rant about how Bowling was a douche and hated gamers because he was lead producer at IW. Smh.

I don't really understand the hate for what he said. Game mechanics last isn't that bad. First you people complain about Call of Duty being the same every year, and now when he finally wants to make a unique game that's more focused on the story and the experience, your hating on him? With all this hate for a new experience towards gaming, its no wonder Call of Duty is the same every year, and we don't see unique games. When someone wants to make a new type of game, people just bitch about it.
