Borderlands 2 Helping Aliens: Colonial Marines to Be a Better Game

Gearbox Software Vice President Steve Gibson has shed light on the culture at the studio, revealing how work on Borderlands 2 is improving the quality of Aliens: Colonial Marines.

Gearbox currently has three projects in development. Publicly, at least. Those titles are Brothers in Arms: Furious 4, Aliens: Colonial Marines and Borderlands 2. But rather than locking themselves away in separate offices, the teams behind these games share a number of central resources.

Which is all a bit practical and boring. The interesting part comes with the revelation that the movement and hunting skills of the Xenomorphs in Aliens: Colonial Marines are essentially the same as the Stalkers from Borderlands 2.

When asked about specific examples of how the studio's teams share resources, Gibson replied, "I think the best example that I could probably point to is the way the aliens work in Aliens: Colonial Marines.

"Those guys traverse not just the ground but the walls and they also have this jumping technique, this parabolic jump. So if you look, you can see very similar movement to the Stalkers in the Borderlands 2 demo we showed off today.

"The way they jump and land and move, the way the AI works, both games are benefitting. A lot of the research in how the AI communicates in Borderlands 2 is benefitting Aliens: Colonial Marines."

Frightening. In Borderlands 2, the Stalkers are a new enemy, a kind of small, Gremlin-esque, leather-winged dragon. You can see them below. Capable of impressive intelligence, they can communicate and co-operate; a far cry from the dumb runners of the first game.

All of which means we have much to fear once Aliens: Colonial Marines finally ships. By the sounds of things, Gearbox is approaching the legendary beast in the correct manner. Fingers crossed they can deliver on a universe that so many others have squandered.

I LOVED the first game. Played it a ridiculously long time after I got the platinum. Can't wait to co-op through campaign.

They have said they fixed the quest issue while playing co-op. You know you are too far ahead/behind to complete quests issue. THAT always irritated me. The split screen POV has apparently been fixed as well.

Go Gearbox! Now make it good and we will all buy the hell out of it.

Probably the two games I'm most looking forward to this year. I hope Colonial Marines is as good as Borderlands was and Borderlands 2 is sure to be!

You can't aim down the sights of your weapons. Second the graphics are horrible. Nothing Gearbox does can save this game from being a Failure!!!!
