Here's a big piece of PS3 news that managed to slip through the net this weekend, like that elusive General Sherman fish Homer tries to catch in that old Simpsons episode. You know the one. Anyway, we digress... Sony has confirmed that it's closed down SOCOM and MAG developer Zipper Interactive.

The Seattle-based studios' closure had been rumoured, but Sony announced that Zipper Interactive has indeed been closed with the following statement issued to Game Informer:

"Sony Computer Entertainment can confirm the closure of Zipper Interactive, a Seattle-based internal game development studio that has been part of the global development operation of Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios (SCE WWS)," reads the statement.

"The closure is a result of a normal cycle of resource re-alignment within SCE WWS. Zipper has completed all work associated with its most recent project, Unit 13 for PlayStation Vita. Zipper titles MAG, SOCOM 4 and Unit 13 will continue to be supported, including the new Daily Challenges in Unit 13."

80 employees are affected by the closure of Zipper Interactive, and the future of the developer's shooter franchises remains uncertain. No more SOCOM? Only Sony knows.

I guess Zipper won't be one of the SCE first party developers to be getting a PS Know dev unit. I wasn't ever a SOCOM fan anyway, but I do feel sorry for all of their die-hard fans.

Well it is unfortunate that jobs were lost, good luck to them. Hope this is not the end of SOCOM.

Wow I really hope they still make socom games or bring back the ps2 version on the network, They were the best, Be even better if they add trophies, I hope more SOCOM games are made but they let to much time come in-between socoms so you have to put one out every 2 years or so

Give SOCOM to Guerilla games im sure they would do it justice and i would buy day 1! Sad to hear a studio close down but it makes sense in this case as it wasnt doing so good! hopefully Sony can move some of the employees to another studio!

I'm guessing SOCOM is probably going to end up in Slant Six's hands, considering they've done the portable ones at least.

Behind COD4, MAG was the most enjoyable FPS i experienced! Really sad to know there won't be a 2nd.

Its a shame that Zips couldn't be a 1st party like Sucker Punch, Insomniac, and Gorilla. Havent played SOCOM, but could of done a little better with MAG.

Glad to see the games will still be supported.

If this was EA they would have just shut the servers aswell.

very sad to hear, i grew up with Zipper's socom games on the ps2 (1 and 2 were my faves by far), and MAG is the most underrated FPS on the PS3 IMO.
socom 4, however, was a complete disaster, but i'll always be thankful to Zipper for all those hours i wasted in my younger days playing S2 until the sun came up.

i blame Seth Luisi, but to be honest the decline started when David Sears left way back when. good luck to all the ex-zip employees, i hope you all land on your feet somewhere.
