Battlefield 3: Close Quarters Was Inspired By The Matrix, Says Lead Designer

There’s a new post over at The Battlefield Blog detailing the inspiration for the game’s new Close Quarters expansion. It’s stuffed with cool little anecdotes from the lead designer Niklas Fegraeus, as well as a new timelapse video showing off some impressive destruction.

Fegraeus was a semi-pro Counter-Strike player back in the day, taking part in tournaments and playing in the Cyber athlete Professional League. It’s those years, coupled with a seminal scene from of The Matrix, that inspired him to create Close Quarters.

“When I finished up Back to Karkand,” he says, “I already knew I needed to start on our next themed expansion pack for release in June. This time, I really wanted to expand Battlefield 3 and give players even more experiences to choose from. But I didn’t know how to approach it.

“Then I remembered those nights at my sponsor’s Internet café, where I and my clan for hours on end practiced the best way to attack a well-defended room, using only a few grenades and the business end of our rifles.”

Fegraeus continues, “There is something very unique about an indoor fire fight. You have to cover angles in new ways, use sound to track your enemies, navigate with much more careful precision and most importantly, you’re never safe. Danger is always no more than a few meters away. It’s a scenario that always makes me feel 100% in the fight. There is no dull moment, you’re always on your toes, on the edge.”

The lead designer also detailed his conversations with art director Jhony Ljungstedt, a process that lead to the team drawing on The Matrix for further inspiration.

“Seeing Neo and Trinity turn a lobby into rubble in slow motion did leave a huge impression,” says Ljundstedt “and [it] hadn’t ever been properly done in a game. We both agreed and Jhony said he really wanted to be able to create that sensation.

According to Fegraeus, Ljundstedt said, “Imagine tearing a place down using only bullets, watching chunks being torn off the walls, littering the floors like a dropped bag of grey marbles.”

Inspired by the matrix? Do we get to choose for the blue and red pills?

I already can see everyone running around with their buckshit shotgun and pissing off people who don't use it, so everyone will end up using the shotties and maps will be called fy_shotgun_rape and fy_shotgun_lame

Buying this DLC day one. I won't think, hesitate, or wait... I WILL BUY IT! Come to think of it having large maps kind of suck because half of the people won't play, will either snipe, or just won't go to our base at all. Now having small maps will give you a lot of kills or a lot deaths. All I can say is that this is going to be one intense indoor battle not to mention everyone might use shotguns with frag bullets... oh god.

All this succeeded in showing me is how limited the destructable environments are. I'll still be buying this, but I'm not exactly hyped for Battlefield 3: CQ (More maps like Metro... Which is the least liked map in the game.)

CQB doesnt usually involve blowing holes in everything you see, its usually planned and rehearsed, as soon a large holes start getting blown in everything it stop becoming CQB and becomes just like any other battle

No thanks. As if those TankSniperBombNuke Weapons weren't bad enough in close maps such as Metro and Grand Bazaar. I predict you won't be able to move for getting spammed by shotgun rounds. Doesn't sound fun getting killed by completely unskilled players every three seconds!

Lmao to everyone bitching about shotguns shut up and get a life. 1 there's walls use them, 2 there's flash bangs use them also, 3 there are flashlights and lasers use them too. This isn't much different to the narrow corridors on bazaar or metro and in all honesty I don't encounter many shotguns there.

@12 a little harsh but I agree. I bitch about the USAS 12 but that's when I'm running around like Rambo with a bullseye painted on me. When I qctualy play with a strategy a USAS fragger never gets with 50ft of me. Its all in how you play.

@#14 More like 3 months actually.

Time isn't a huge issue to me, hell I stuck with BC2 Vietnam and we had to wait like 6 months for that to actually come out.

As long as DICE gets the spawns right, this DLC will be alright. I'm buying it regardless for trophies and the guns, but I really do want it to succeed so I can actually play it.

@12 Flash bangs? BF3 doesn't have flashbangs.

I can see these becoming shotgun maps, like TDM on Noshahr Canals, which isn't that fun imo. I'll wait to see more of the maps before I decide on this though.

There is no Rush mode for these DLC maps either.

@8 "Metro is the least liked map in the game"? Says who? I love Metro! Even if your team is horrible, you can find a corner to defend (CTF) and Rush... well, let's just say if you play smart, whether rushing or defending, it is one of the best maps to rack up kills. Despite squad-based gameplay, most players don't have a mic and consequently follow teammates like lemmings into deathtraps. The CQB maps will see a resurgence of Claymores. If there are only three routes into an objective area (sort of like Metro), you can wear down your enemies numbers before they even come close... and that's without shotguns.
