It's official. Hollywood has finally ran out of original ideas. Now they're remaking bloody board games for crying out loud! And to coincide with the release of the Battleship movie based upon the classic game of tactical naval warfare and starring Liam Neeson and Taylor Kitsch, Activision and developer Double Helix are bringing the video game to a console near you this spring.
Also entitled Battleship, the game of the movie of the board game promises a blend of tactical naval command inspired by the original tabletop game and "boots-on-the-ground" first-person shooter gameplay. Playing as elite demolitions specialist Cole Mathis, you'll clash with an extraterrestrial aquatic threat lurking among the sand and sea of the Hawaiian archipelago.
What follows is a "siege on the sea" as Mathis commands the US Navy fleet and rallies troops on land for a "war on the shore" (groan). You'll be able to switch seamlessly between your 'Battle Command' tactical map during the FPS bits and bombard the enemy while protecting your own frigates, carriers, submarines, cruisers and destroyers.
Battleship will be coming to Europe in April 2012 followed by the North American launch on May 15th. Next up, David Cronenberg's Operation! and David Fincher's Mouse Trap (just kidding...for now).
