Don't worry. 2K Marin is still beavering away on its XCOM FPS, but Firaxis is also making XCOM: Enemy Unknown, a return to the roots of the series, which was big back in 1994. Having got the scoop for the cover of its magazine, Game Informer is also first with the debut screenshots, showing that the developer has a handle on the more strategical bent of XCOM.
In XCOM: Enemy Unknown, you'll keep track of UFOs and alien abductions around the world, as well as managing research and development at the XCOM organisation's top secret facility. Out in the field, you'll engage in turn-based combat, switching between a real-time global view and turn-based battlefield.
Apparently, Firaxis' XCOM reimaging will be streamlining the experience to make it slightly more accessible than the original, although the same concepts and things that you remember from the 90s game will be present and correct. Check out the first three screens from XCOM: Enemy Unknown, which is out in fall 2012.
