XCOM: Enemy Unknown is the Old-Skool RTS That You Know and Love

Firaxis Games is taking XCOM back to its old-skool RTS roots this fall with XCOM: Enemy Unknown, introducing the series in its original guise to a wider audience on consoles in the same year that 2K Marin's tactical XCOM shooter set in 50s suburbia arrives.

Putting you in command of the global anti-alien defence force, XCOM: Enemy Unknown will be taking XCOM back to the cerebral, strategy gameplay that made it such a hit back in the day, with turn-based tactical gameplay enabling you to control everything that transpires on the battlefield.

"It’s been a dream of ours to recreate X-COM with our unique creative vision. We’re huge fans of the original game and it’s a once in a lifetime opportunity to re-envision a game that is as beloved as X-COM," said Steve Martin, President of Firaxis Games. "We were careful to keep XCOM: Enemy Unknown true to the elements that made X-COM such a revered game while delivering an entirely new story and gameplay experience for both die-hard X-COM fans and newcomers to the franchise."

Game Informer will be running a big feature on XCOM: Enemy Unknown in its February issue, the digital version of which will be available from Janauary 10th. You can check out the February Game Informer XCOM cover below. XCOM: Enemy Unknown is slated for release in fall 2012.

So this game will take place in the future whereas the other one will take place in the past?

:D Oh, the hours I spent with the original. I still play it since I bought it on Steam. It's such a complex game with so many levels of strategy to it. I hope they bring back most of the elements. Looks like the ground combat is definitely there. Hopefully, base construction, research, and resource management will be back too.

2K heard the complaint, and they did the right thing. Kudo to 2K games for making this move.

Had the original on PSone, it was one of the main reasons I bought the mouse for the console, but it actually became very valuable in loads of fps's on PS1 & 2 & C&C series as well.

Both xcom's on my wishlist, wish I had a mouse compatible with the ps3 for this one :)
