Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance
Japan Can't Compete as Gamers Don't Want New Experiences, Says Kojima
Written Wednesday, January 04, 2012 By Lee Bradley
View author's profile

Hideo Kojima has expressed doubts over the ability of Japanese developers to compete with modern triple-A titles.

Speaking to Official PlayStation Magazine, the Metal Gear Solid creator said, "It's much more competitive now: if you look at triple-A titles on a worldwide scale there's maybe only ten really big games that can get gamers' attention, and I'm not sure how Japan can compete on that level."

He also said that such is the demand for first-person shooters, gamers don't really want new experiences. ""I think it's more consumer demand - right now," he said, "consumers are happy with what they have."

"First-person shooters sell like crazy, so there's not really a strong demand for anything else, and that's why [original ideas] stop being made. People are satisfied with making minor upgrades and tweaking things here and there - as long as that's the landscape, it will keep on happening. I don't see a problem necessarily," he continued, "but at the same time it is nice to see new things come."

Kojima is currently executive producing Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance.

I'm not sure why but I haven't been into First-Person Shooters since I was in my a teenager playing Goldeneye (on the N64 of course).

I've talked to some old gamer friends of mine and a few share my sentiment.

If you were to look at my PSN profile you'd see one FPS, and it was a gift that I ended up selling, oh and it's worthy to note it sits at 0% completion, LOL.

Way to go CoD. You ruined a great diversity in gaming. I for one love new original ideas. Instead of pre-ordering in newest CoD: MW, oops, I mean, Cod: MW3, I take chances on the lesser known games. For instance, I preordered Hyperdimension Neptunia, Resonance of Fate, Catherine, Nier, and a few others. And I was not disappointed. However I have hated the CoD games with a passion because all they are is a reskin of previous games.

It's not that gamers don't want new experiences, just that the big publishers don't want to invest in what they deem as risky genres and new IPs.

The sales of Braid, Limbo, Minecraft etc etc show that gamers will lap up original and high quality games. We just need a brave investor to raise these to AAA standard (in terms of game depth and marketing).

The problem is that a lot of new concepts are done wrong. Not every game needs online multiplayer. If you have to throw in an online, gimme co op. I love co oping campaigns with friends. Hell, COD W@W had co op and I played the shit outta it, tons of fun.

Look at games like Mindjack, cool concept, horrible execution. Homefront had that new battlepoints system that was awesome but the dev never supported it post launch. The servers were shit on release and the map and game mode variety are very poor and hence the game failed. Way too much money was spent on promoting the game they never supported even though they made tons of sales.

Devs need to realize that COD dominates the market atm but there is definitely room to enter. Many people are done with cod. I bought a ps3 because of world at war. I played a lot of W@W and mw2 but I don't play much of any cod anymore because it's stale. You can't just enter a market randomly with an unproven product, slap a $60 price tag on it, neglect the shit out of it post patch and complain that consumers are stupid and are unwilling to accept change. That's not the case. You just have to earn the respect of the consumer and reach out to them more. You can't expect everyone to fall in love with a game just because it's different. Cod found a formula that works, someone's just gotta find another formula that works.

if prices reflected more on the game i think it would get people to take the risk on a new IP, for example, Naughty Bear, that was released at £40 same as most other games, despite clearly being a lower quality game, i knew a lot of people that wanted it, but because of the poor graphics, and limited gameplay, they decided it wasn't worth the £40 asking price and they would maybe pick it up when it drops to £15/£20, but of course by that time it's already been forgotten about by the customers, who never bothered buying it in the end
the company did support it with 2 or 3 lots of DLC, but they were heavily overpriced for what they were

What i'm saying, and i think it's what lisa was saying aswell, there needs to be a pricing system that better reflects the games quality, why should something that's clearly a poorly made indie title, cost the same as a AAA title, once companies realise this then they will notice more customers willing to take the plunge for new IPs and titles and as such they can build on that success to make sequels closer to AAA titles and they will be estabilished franchises with a willing market ready to pay AAA prices

@13 Because Japan prefers Sony and Nintendo over Microsoft when it comes to game consoles. FPS games sell in Japan on PS3 but hardly any on Xbox 360. Even on PS3, they do sell quite a few copies, but I don't think it's anywhere near to how bad it is like in America and Europe but still more than normal.

In my opinion, it's a matter of time until the FPS "bubble" explodes and people set their eyes on different, innovative game genres.
I wouldn't blame CoD, but the people who support it fanatically and buy without second thoughts every "new" CoD the company serves them. If only they had the patience, intelligence, skill to try and explore new games, imagine how much more profiting would be for the companies to experiment with new game types and ideas.

Yawn at CoD hating comments. If you only buy them for MP then of course you will be disappointed. MW3's SP campaign was one of the most enjoyable I have ever played.

@4 How has CoD killed the industry? There are plenty of other games that are very different (Portal, Dark Souls) that do well.

It's not really quite cause we don't want new things. It's cause some of us are dumb enough to buy into hype. It's a marketing issue.

Capcom, a Japanese company, does quite well rehashing their stuff cause they know how to generate hype and advertise to us Americans.

We prefer hype over substance sadly. :/

1st person shooters played one played the them all.

also can't blame call of duty, mind you it's popularity helped as people obsess over it even now though it seems fashionable to pretend to hate the series.
blame the xbox for it as thats seems to be all they ever released in the early days 1st person shooter after 1st person shooter.
then the sheep who have to follow trends and buy them.

i would rather try new types and style of games like ico, zoe, echochrome and the other werid stuff over any 1st person shooter any day of the week.

I agree with him but he himself does not relate to gamers anyone too.

If he made a carbon copy of a MGS, it wouldn't be the worse thing. No secrets, no flashy twists, just playing as Snake in his prime stopping some sort of Metal Gear.

Does anyone else feel that way or am I know really expressing myself well?

It was only last night that I was discussing "dying game genres" with a friend of mine. If it wasn't for the Silent Hill HD Collection, the PS3 would be "horribly" short on true horror games, since most of 'em nowadays are just shooters disguised as horror games (like Dead Space, Resident Evil, F.E.A.R., or Dead Island... or even Left 4 Dead, which the PS3 lacks).

Don't get me wrong, I loved Dead Space 1 and 2 (you can see in my profile that I've finished both), but they're not truly satisfying as the horror genre goes. I'd much rather have another Siren or Project Zero/Fatal Frame...

The same applies to other game genres that we see less of with every passing year, because people just got too much into first-person shooters. That's why when we see a game like Catherine coming out, no matter how good it is, you'll see someone going "fuck this piece of shit game, try playing a real man's game like CoD".

COD - 7 games in 7 years.

MGS - 4 games in 13 years.

Some franchises take a long time between releasing games and usually offer something new each time. A new MGS would be welcome as the gameplay is something different from FPS's anyway.

COD, meh, COD2 was great fun as it was a little different to other shooters, MW changed the formula to something new but now thats got boring as well, and the Treyarch titles are just cash-ins.

PSN & XBLA seem to be where the innovations lie - Journey, Limbo etc...

It's not only FPS, western RPG are sort of also dominating Japanese gaming market. Skyrim topped Japanese sales when it first came out. Dragon Age: Origins (which came out in Japan 2 years after US release) also did well in Japan. So the problem is that Japan lack innovation in gaming, Demon's Souls and Dark Soul was an exception. I do have an idea of having our western game outsource to Japan so Japan can learn to be innovative, I wouldn't mind if:

-Bethesda have From Software do a Elder Scroll game and a Fallout game that take place in Japan.

-Ubisoft could have HAWX 3 done by Ace Combat developer.

That's how we could bring innovation in gaming to Japan.

Japan could teach the West how to innovate, The West could teach Japan on how to stick to release schedules (Polyphony, Team Ico - I'm looking at you!).

Seems strange, that for a country reknowned for its timekeeping and where lateness is considered extremely rude (if a train is more than a few minutes late, you ride for free) - that the games industry doesn't seem to be included!

Although the dominance of the FPS genre in gaming is definitely troubling, the true root of the problem is the complete laziness and cop-out behavior of different gaming companies (with FPS dominance being merely a biproduct).

You see, the costs to make a triple-A title have increased drastically over the past decade, so much so that a game like Uncharted 3 costs millions to create. With that much cash on the line, companies have fallen into a no risk-no reward mindset.

When taking a chance on a single game runs the risk of bankrupting your entire company, what incentive is there to do so? Just look at Homefront and Kaos Studios.

So now we have companies playing it safe and pumping their resources into their "cash cow" franchises; because it's the safest and quickest way to profit. Activision has Call of Duty, Ubisoft has Assassin's Creed, both of which have been tied to a yearly release schedule.

It would not surprise me in the least bit if the next CoD continues to use an "updated" version of the MW2 system.

What we truly need is for money-grubbing pricks like Kotick to take a minute away from counting his money, and invest in some smaller IPs. There's a ton of untapped potential in independent developers that's just waiting to be explored.

It wouldn't even take much. Spare some money to an indie developer with a promising idea and a strong vision for his game, then help him release on somehwere like XBLA or PSN. It's already been proven that it can be successful, and that the consumers that pay attention to those particular spaces of digital downloadable games crave creativity and innovation.

All they need to do is stop paying so much attention to one or two franchises and start branching out.

I don't hate COD, I just hate the developers tactics towards the franchise reskining the same game with minor improvements and no effort at all, the continued story of a 6 Hour campaign, ignoring fan support and feedback, rehashing zombie maps and now a completely undeeded elite service. I don't think we ever hated the game, just the developers attitude to the series becoming more money-greedy and fans playing nothing but the game because it's the only thing they are good at.

I understand trying new ideas but if it's forced in like the multiplayer aspect it's not going to attract new audiences if they see that the mode is rubbish, it's just going to make them go away and give money to another game franchise. That's why if the idea doesn't work, don't force the idea in! That's exactly the problem of why these games don't sell. Listen to your fan support/feedback, don't try cheap-money tactics because we are not stupid, polish your game as much as you can: Hell, pay testers and make the game as good as you can.

It'll definitely pay off when the game is released and don't be afraid to go into the unknown by trying a new idea.

I like my games just like how I like my movies, music, and art. I like the creative, artistic stuff. The unique and innovative stuff! The kind of stuff with a message I haven't heard over and over and over again. The kind of stuff that makes me think about issues that I don't normally think about!

I'm in love with Katamari, Noby Noby Boy, Flower, Journey, Heavy Rain, The Metal Gear Solid series, and many more.

I think that while games like Call of Duty may be healthy economically for those who make them... I don't think they're healthy psychologically. The day that people are happy with the same thing over and over again is the day that people stop trying to make the world a better place.

What the definition of insanity again...? Doing the same thing over and over?

Sounds like somebody is just whiny that they can't get huge sales at launch like Call of Duty. Big deal. This article is nothing more than bait for CoD haters. There are plenty of different kinds of games that sell well. Do they sell as well as Duty, no. But do they sell well, absolutely. So don't sit there and tell me that people only want first person shooters, that's a load of crap and anyone with a brain cell or two knows it.

But again, not many people will call Kojima out on this bullshit because they're too busy going "hurr hurr I hate CoD it's killing the industry and this is proof" or whatever other retarded shit people have yet to write in these comments.

Also, what about LittleBigPlanet, what about Portal, what about Catherine, and more? Gamers don't want new experiences my ass. Kojima, sit down and shut the fuck up.

While he does hit a few valid points his generalization on the matter is completely wrong. We love new Ip's, we also love innovation.

Its true. Sad, but true. That's why I'm always happy to see something come along like LittleBigPlanet, Catherine and others. And, if it IS a shooter, first or third person, I rather see it more along the lines of VANQUISH, Portal or Deus Ex.

As for your standard yearly FPS, I'm tired of 'em. Battlefield, Call of Duty, etc., good stories, but that's really all that stands out. As far as I'm concerned, the only FPS games worth playing this generation can be counted on two hands, if that.

He's right and he's wrong. The gaming public at large will spend their sixty bucks on a game they can count on for consistent quality, even if that quality is low. Japan seems to have suffered from creative stagnation. I mean on paper Cross Edge should have been low brow fun with the large crossover cast of ladies in a JRPG adventure, but the delivery was so boring and hypertechnical the fun was not there. Hell, FF is just as soulless and empty as CoD, it just has bishonen instead of macho military wish fulfillment.

i myself have seen too many developers come up with brilliant concepts, get one good sleeper hit out of it, make one shitty sequel that builds on the original with nothing but a couple of short action gimmicks thrown in, and then dumps the whole concept altogether. i'm seeing developers dumb games down or ignore the true innovations in their creations outright (Nintendo???). and then, every now and again, i see a developer take a great concept from a sleeper hit, build on it in all the right ways, and release another great game with a perfect balance of new innovations to continuity.

We'll just name a few of those, no matter how old their predecessors were : Arkham City, Skyrim, Deus Ex HR, Mass Effect 2 (hopefully 3, as well), Bioshock Infinite (from the looks of it), Zelda : Skyward Sword, & Mortal Kombat. all games that took a successful concept, made all the right changes to make the experience refreshing without being foreign, and met with huge success because of it. these games should be lessons to developers speaking of innovations in new games.

While I enjoy a FPS on occasion, I'd much rather have an RPG, Action/Adventure, or even an awesome 3rd person shooter like the Uncharted games. They're definitely more entertaining and have a better story to me, but that's just what kinds of games appeal to me. Some gamers I know ONLY play FPS because that's what they're good at and that's what they enjoy. Every gamer is different. I think Kojima is on crack if he thinks there isn't a strong demand for other genres of gaming or if gamers don't wnat new experiences. If all games were the same from here on out, why the hell would people keep gaming then? As gamers I feel we look for a new, fresh, and innovative set of ideas because playing the same old dime a dozen games gets stale after awhile.

This was inevitable, majority of society will find a comfort zone (in this case FPS or Activision) and will stick to it like a prehistoric mosquito crystallized in tree sap, doubt First Person Shooters will ruin true creativity in gaming, but damned if they ain't tryin their hardest

You should be looking at all the major game developers being content with making sequels. 2011 was year of the #3 in the series games. Instead of poring their cash into new developments they just copy & paste what they did the previous year.

I don’t blame them for doing this, it’s easy money for the dev companies. But this is why we aren’t seeing lots of new creative games.

Its like the movie industry. No one comes up with new movies anymore. Its all remakes.

I guess if anything, it makes us appreciate when an amazing, ground breaking game comes out.

All you assholes that come in here trying to sound superior by saying people who hate cod are idiots, are idiots yourselves. Hating people who hate cod has become the new hating cod, it's ridiculous. If you notice my previous argument, I said I loved cod W@W. I loved the campaign, multiplayer and most of all co op. A lot of people don't hate cod, they just find the MP stale. And to people saying "oh ya cod is shitty. that's why its the biggest selling franchise in the world." Ya, who cares? Just because something sells well doesn't mean it's good. That's not proof that the game isn't stale. That's just proof that their audience of fanboys are stupid. I have no problem with people buying cod. I've bought BO and mw3 on release. I played em, beat em, moved on. Occasionally I'll play some MP with my friends who don't play anything other than cod, but I've moved on. It annoys me when people don't give other games a chance or when people love cod because of it's MP that's the same as cod 4, cod mw2, and black ops (I think cod 5 is the only game that doesn't feel like a typical cod game, hence why it's the least popular).

@54, who the fuck are you? "durrr, no one who bashes cod has a life. bf3 is bfbc 2.5 duurrrp". You're doing the exact same thing people are doing to cod but to battlefield. mw3 is very similar to mw2. Bf3 is not similar to bfbc2. Those are just facts. I actually prefer BFBC2 over BF3 but they're completely different games. And if battlefield is too slow paced for you, that's because you're the kind of idiot that always gets put into my squad and refuses to spawn on me while I'm in battle and need backup. You're the asshole that camps for vehicles or always insists on spawning at the base and running 400m to the objective only to get mowed down by a tank and have to do it all again. You're the moron that runs around with support or assault and refuses to drop ammo and health even though I'm spamming select and my character is shouting "DROP SOME AMMO" or "I NEED A MEDKIT". Just because you can't understand a game, doesn't mean it's for slow people. It means you're slow because you can't figure out how a shooter works when it takes some strategy.

Uggh, another huge rant against a cod fag. BF3 is far from perfect but I refuse to allow some cod fanboy to rip on people for playing a game that requires strategy instead of a game where I can't even play it without people like him calling me a fagget or a retard when they finish higher than me and a loser or a virgin when I finish higher than them.

@55 I like it when someone rants and they use actual facts and sound reasoning rather than the increasingly popular "fanboy facts" which consist of "her derp" "you're stupid for disagreeing with me" " and the ever popular "you just hate it because you suck at it" brava sir brava :)

@17.. seriously??? MW3 was a good SP?? ok for me a good single player game MUST at least be longer than a freaking day.. I mean I bought the game at 11:30 and at 19:45 I had finished it.. on veteran.. on the other hand BF3 took me a week to finish (co-op and single player on hard) I'm not trolling because I have plenty of games that lasted me longer than a freakin day..

Cod Did killed the industry of gaming.

well said but nothing will change this everyone wants first person shooters like cod and battlefield they all ruin games not just cod however cod is the main problem. the main reason most people dont try in games and just fully all the rest of the sheep is because gaming still has a nerdy image and people dont like to play to much or to hard.

Great comment made by Kojima. I really respect him for the awesome man he is. I totally agree. Its possible for new IPs to come and make big sales. I dont know about you guys, but All I want from a game is to be unique, have a great story and be fun to play. I honestly cant stand FPS anymore, they all seem like COD and Battlefield to me, and before anyone comments, check my trophies, own all Battlefields and Cods. Skyrim and Braid are good examples of uniqueness. Dead Island is a great example of a FPS game being unique. All you people saying COD killed the industry, no it didnt, gamers did for buying COD ever year, unfortunately, I am one of those gamers.

Don't worry Kojima!! I for one, never buy FPSs. I have no interest in them and will not become part of the problem. Long live you, o' pioneer. I will buy whatever you develop!!!

ok Kojima is right about evrything, and for me Kojima its a god in game industry, but put in that way, Activision release a CoD evry year, and its more of the same, but same happens with Metal Gear Solid, 1,2,3 and 4 are equal only had different story and a few upgrades, same as Assassin's Creed, etc... it doesn't mean that they are not good games, if like pizza why you only need to eat one piece and connot eat 2 or 3 pieces? know wht i mean? the problem its not the massive sequels of the games, its the fact that games like Ico, Shadows of Collosus, came in a different genere and most of the people miss this great games because they are afraid of buying it because its a new genere, PEOPLE NEED TO BE MORE OPEN MINDED AND NOT BE AFRAID OF TRYIG SOMETHING NEW, ESCAPE THE ROUTINE FOR GOD SAKE, FOR YOUR OWN GOOD! Farewell my gamer friends ;)

Look, who really needs a gaming revolution? What's about racing games? How can you revolutionise these genre? Do you add five wheel to a car? You can only mix racing with action, story or RPG elements, but it was already done a million ways in a past. Just keep releasing a perfect quality games like Batman Arkham City or Skyrim - these games doesn't offer something new but many people is spending a lot of time playing them.

For me FPS means less complex (and they are easier/cheaper for developers to make). The first shooters in 3D were FPS (Turok, Goldeneye, etc). TPS was a later evolution. In TPS you must interact more with the environment around you making the shooter more intricate and the possibilities endless. While MGO was plagued with problems, the ability to do complex CQC moves made battle more complex and fun. While I do not play MGO anymore, though I would if they had just made more and larger maps, I can't stand playing any FPS because it just seems so dumbed down. I've done it before and every FPS is essentially the same. The shooter genre is dead to me. No developer will ever live up to the shooter I would want.
