Wipeout 2048
See WipEout's Futuristic Racing of Tomorrow, Today in Miniature

Ever wondered whether the floaty futuristic racing of WipEout could one day be a reality? Wonder no more, fans of science, as the Japan Institute of Science and Technology has been monkeying around with controlled quantum levitation, using WipEout as an inspiration.

The boffins at the Japanese institute have knocked up a suitably twisty-turny track for two small replica models of the distinctive WipEout crafts, which are then loaded with liquid nitrogen and steered around the course, as they levitate, leaving awesome vapour trails in their wake.

OK, so strictly speaking this isn't news, but we'll be damned if it isn't incredibly cool and offers an enticing glimpse at what could be the future. Hovering nitrogen-fuelled racers? One day, friends. One day...

Check out the vid and be amazed.

This reminds me of the research Japanese institutes do on technology in the Gundam series. If we aren't careful, Japan will be in control of all future tech advances...giant human-operated robots and hovering nitrogen-fueled racers!

I like how one of the "pilots" goes as far as to imitate the speed boost when he goes over one of the "pads"
