Anonymous Sets Sights on Sony Again

Internet activist group Anonymous is threatening Sony again, following the Japanese company's public support for the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA). A proposed new act in the US, SOPA may considerably strengthen the rights of law enforcers and copyright holders to punish those found copying and distributing pirated material.

Representatives of Anonymous outlined their intentions in a new video, saying "Your support of the act is a signed death warrant to Sony Company and Associates."

"Therefore, yet again, we have decided to destroy your network. We will dismantle your phantom from the internet. Prepare to be extinguished. Justice will be swift, and it will be for the people, whether some like it or not."

Despite the strong words, a PlayStation LifeStyle report says that senior members of Anonymous are keen to avoid a repeat of PSNgate. Instead, the hacktivist group is planning to deface websites and dig up information on staff members.

Last year PSNgate left millions of PS3 users with compromised bank card details and an unusable online service. It was largely believed that the attacks came from Anonymous in retaliation for Sony's action against the hacker George Hotz, the man responsible for cracking the PS3's security. Hotz's actions allowed, amongst other things, pirated games to be played on the system.

It is worth noting however, that the website TorrentFreak – which publishes an annual chart of the most torrented media – does not even bother calculating figures for the PS3, as the numbers are so low. Despite the hack, it would seem that piracy levels are almost nonexistent.

I've embedded the Anonymous video below.

So these people want a world where no companies gain profit and therefore video game companies have to close down.

As long as we, the users aren't affected, for I am agaist sopa since Im trying to make a youtube channel with gaming vids...if sopa passes my projects=gone.

But if they shut down the psn AGAIN sure it'd have massive damage...but people will only learn to hate them MORE for denying them what they want, not being what they think they are (vigilantes)

I'm sick of wankers acting "for me"; governments and unions do a good enough job of making my life as difficult as fucking possible without a bunch of jumped-up kids ruining my gaming just to protect their bloody botnet/hacking/pirating activities.

I agree it's not fair that media publishers take the piss out of consumers and that SOPA threatens the freedom and privacy of internet users, but the responsible way to protest is to boycott those companies and pressure politicians who support SOPA, not to shit all over the very users they pretend to represent. All they are doing is giving governments more reason to push for more restrictions and regulation.

My question is: Why shouldn't Sony be allowed to support SOPA? Why is Anonymous so intent on keeping their pirated crap instead of maybe earning their content like other honest human beings? Piracy is for children anyway and why shouldn't companies try to protect their revenues? I quit pirating stuff years ago, I have good friends in those industries, that's *their* salaries I'm attacking if I do that stuff.

Shutting down the psn is terrible but if it stops SOPA, it's worth it. The only thing I'm pissed about is that both Nintendo and Microsoft support SOPA too but they're not getting a threat like this from Anonymous.

For any of you who don't know or don't care heres what SOPA would like:
The bill would make unauthorized streaming of copyrighted content(ex: every single f**king video on youtube) a crime, with a maximum penalty of FIVE YEARS IN PRISON FOR 10 PIECES OF MUSIC OR MOVIES WITHIN SIX MONTHS.

Piracy isnt as large an issue as the media and major film/game/music industries make you believe. Anyone that supports SOPA is an idiot. Piracy is bad and all but when your government gives companies/corporations the ability to fine a LARGE amount of money and jailtime in a lawsuit you have a lot more issues then a VERY small percentage of people obsessing over breaking open their ps3s and games. Besides if you jailbreak your ps3 you lose the ability to go online and sign into the psn network.

In other words you will never see or hear of these pirates *EVER* so i say leave em be... They cant be tracked because they can easily cover their asses unlike all of you. These things always end up hitting the wrong people. You and me. Regular people. Its happened before with music. Will you watch it happen again?

#17 Totally agree with you. It would suck but it may just be a necessary sacrifice.

gaming videos on youtube wouldn't be affected by SOPA surely? its not like you've taken a film that's not been paid for and distributing it, its only sharing gameplay footage? So I don't see the problem, it just stops people copying music or films and sharing them illegally?

#25 Anything thats copyright mate. It's a dangerous bill. Never give corporations more power then they need. They make enough money. Give them this and they will inevitably become increasingly corrupt. As soon as you give them the legality to take on the middle and lower classes they will do just that.

Just look up the Jammie Thomas-Rasset case. Its insanity and its too much power

They don't care about the piracy. They want to make a few million extra bucks from 20 or so lawsuits. This is always how it starts. Think you can handle a bunch of over-paid top-notch lawyers in a court case. Not likely

I work for myself, and when I've worked on a job and the only payment I receive is through DVD sales, I don't want to hear someone say they'll buy one and then copy it for friends. I understand why companies want to sign up for this, but it's a bit extreme.

But why is Sony being singled out, when Nintendo and Microsoft are supporting this? Is it more difficult to hack Nintendo and Microsoft, Anonymous? I'm just sick and tired of these guys that want to steal stuff, then piss and moan when they could get prosecuted for it. They attack back at the companies cause they can always hide behind their computers and cover their asses. I just hope police can match their abilities and manage to track down all of these pathetic losers.

Holy shit, how do they write this stuff and hear it back and not laugh at their own childishness? What I love the most about this Anon garbage is that they take themselves so seriously like they're an elite gang of vigilantes, the New Watchmen for the Modern Age or the hidden shadow government that is gracious enough to allow us what little freedoms we have. Hey, Anonymous, why aren't you fighting the NDAA if you can shut. down. everything. Sony's an easy target and all you're doing is annoying and aggravating the consumers, not the companies. Yeah, shutting down PSN is gonna stop SOPA. Sure. No, it's just gonna compromise our CC information *again*. Fucking neckbeards.

@ all of the comments slamming anon for not taking on M$

I went to a technic school many years ago, and back then there barely passed a single month without M$ being hacked to pieces by anon and other hackers. Nowadays M$ has kinda faded out and Apple, Sony & others have become giants amongst them so they get the blunt end to, happens to everybody that grow to big for their britches in the tech sector
I myself don't understand why M$ gets so little of their bullshit nowadays, maybe it's cos they just enrolled all the hackers & now pay them to focus on others :D

Last time they took down PSN I didn't think to much about it, didn't feel to much for their case but still wont turn against them for messing up 1 month of online gaming as they have done quite much for human rights activism, consumer rights etc. and they have my support from that, though it did cause a dent in my view on them.

But since then Sony seem to have gone out of their way to fuck up my experience on PS3, stealing content I've purchased on the store, banning my account when i complain over it on PSN forums, repeatedly lie to me over the phone about the ban and account status & in the end reset my trophies!!!
16 years of being a loyal Sony consumer blown out the window in a few weeks & now, well I'm having a hard time not to giggle like a little girl inside that someone is at least able to stand up to sony and other fucks like them that treat their customers like floor mats - though I'd rather just have sony to put my things straight again and give an apology so we could get 16 more great years together, but that don't seem to be likely

@16 - SOPA has the potential to destroy the entire web. Most major sites are based in the US, and any hint of copyright infringement could have them shut down. Bye bye YouTube for one, since they can hardly monitor every single video that gets uploaded.

Must be a lot of young gamers on this site, I get it you're worried about your gaming time being affected. I like gaming to.

If you haven't already then you should read up on SOPA to know what the fuss is about. Copyright holders already have legal tools to protect their content but with SOPA most people believe they are going overboard.

SOPA allows them to kick sites off of the internet. They can force google to stop linking to the site and your ISP to block access. This is censorship and fundamentally alters what the internet is (open to all).

If someone is breaking the law you deal with the criminal, you don't alter all the worlds maps and forbid citizens from going near.

SOPA has a lot of people concerned about the future of the internet and any company that supports it can expect some backlash (look up godaddy in recent news)

p.s. from the article it doesn't read like anon is targeting psn anyway.

I would never have started trophy hunting if it wasnt for the PSN being down for a few week last year!

SOPA is a fucking joke tbh. Look i pay for all my games, i download a film to watch and if i like it ill go to the cinema and ill go out and buy it. Same thing goes with music, if i like it ill buy it but id prefer to go see them live!

"Musicians have seen a spectacular rise in income from live performances which contributed to a significant increase in their overall revenue. The labels on the other hand are struggling, mostly due to the decreased revenue from recorded music."

Im 100% against SOPA however as its fuck all the do with Scotland i couldnae give a fuck!

Y'know, I can understand havin' differing world views on a variety of things... business, religion, politics and what have you, but to attack an innocent group to get your point across is nothing short of terrorism. These guys have done way more harm than good.

To destroy someone's life, bring a halt to their livelihood and/or simply ruin an innocent bystander's day is lower than low. But to think you hold the power to judge another, that's just deluded.

Okay how many people are with me in saying this: Anonymous if you want support don't hack the companies that support the law you'll hurt their customers which will then generate even more hatred of your group.

Or to put in terms Anonymous would understand: LEAVE SONY ALONE YOU FUCKING IDIOTS!

I spoke with a friend in the music industry. he told me that since piracy became so commonplace as it is now, musicians and small labels are making more money than ever, but the big 3, Universal EMI & Sony are losing out. There are 20% more people in the world now than 15 years ago but music sales are up 35% in same time, actually music sales went down in the end of the 90's, but then when piracy became more common sales skyrocketed again.

I've pirated shit & almost everyone I know has done it to some extent at some time, but every single one of those, me included, buy the shit we like and delete the rest. Ye, it's illegal, ye it's like stealing a car to test drive it before buying it and all that, but it still ends up with me and so many others actually buying more shit than we would have otherwise

Besides, this bill has more to do with the US senate being afraid of activism and public uprisings (like the middle east has been seeing the last year) than piracy and this bill is cleverly disguised as being made to battle piracy & pedophile sites (think of the children argument always works) but in fact the first site to disappear if this goes through will be wikileaks and then every other human rights & political activism site except for the bought of ones (amnesty, hrw, unicef etc.)

and to finish of, @77 LOL, love this comment, you start of judging anon as terrorists and then go on to say that judging others is low, go judge, go

Wow, almost nobody here gets it!
SOPA is an attack on the free internet under the disguise of fighting piracy!
This will open the door for chinese style censorship on the net!
Shame on you Sony and all other supporters of this dangerous bill!

ok seriously. if these guys hack the ps3 network again and cause us to be without online play for a month again then i vote we all just get together and go find them and knock some sense into them. attacking the people who you want on board with your cause is not the way to do anything.

grow up and do politics and fight SOPA that way. everytime i have ever called a member of congress for the area i live in i have gotten a phone call back from them personally within 2-3 days tops. so get off your butt and go call them.

you people clearly don't read before you jump to your keyboards and type hate messages about this group.

"Instead, the hacktivist group is planning to deface websites and dig up information on staff members."

They won't even be targeting us you morons. They're planning on targeting the business itself. This group isn't out to get our credit card information, they're out to stop coorporations from gaining unnecessary powers and stop sick fucks that put up child porn sites.

I can't believe you're all so fucking bitter about what happened a YEAR ago (almost). Get over it and stop being whiney babies about it.

But ok, I'm sure you'd rather be fined $250,000 or go to jail because your friend downloaded a song on your computer without you knowing, then it's your ass being busted because it's your computer and would have no way of proving your friend did it and not you. If it means not being OFFLINE from your precious Call of Duty for a month, it's worth the risk, right? It's not even like your PS3 was completely useless when the outage happened! You just couldn't BUY anything, or play online.

The irony in this, I bet you at least 90% of whoever's sending out this hate towards Anonymous, don't even realise that they're pirates themselves because they probably download their music for free.

SOPA is poison to the internet. Sony is stupid and short-sighted for supporting it. However, the only people Anon will be screwing is the customers. Hell, Anon is the new PETA, they're attention whores and common criminals who cloak their delinquency with smug self-righteousness.

SOPA is no good, from what I've read and heard about it, it will slowly, slowly whittle our online access to nothing more than a state run media. I don't fully support Anonymous's actions and the way they are dealing with the SOPA act, but hey, the best way to get a message across is to make the message come up and whack ya in the face.

"It is worth noting however, that the website TorrentFreak – which publishes an annual chart of the most torrented media – does not even bother calculating figures for the PS3, as the numbers are so low. Despite the hack, it would seem that piracy levels are almost nonexistent."

Because who in their right mind would torrent PS3 games when you can get jDownloader and go the DD route.

Okay this may be a dumb question, but is Sony for the stricter laws on copyrighting that basically f-s all greatness the Internet has to offer and these terrorist hackers are telling them to back off or is Sony against the stricter laws for copy righting and these aholes want the laws to be stricter?
Because I really hope Sony doesn't want stricter laws for this copyright crap
And if its the other way Where does this "anynomous" get off on making copyrighting laws stricter when he/they are hackers in the first place?

Oh good this again, apparently they're so self-obsessed that when everyone said "we hate you" and "we don't care about you, stop trying to fight a cause that has no cause" all they heard was "keep doin what you're doin, we totally appreciate it even though it inconveniences millions of people around the world, hell I didnt even like using PSN thanks for getting it shutdown"

Sony are indeed a disgraceful company at times, but piracy is still a crime, they're fighting a company supporting a method of stopping crime with crime......because they think it's a crime to fight crime.....are you fucking kidding me?

Well there's actually two problems with this

First of all the last time anonymous did something like this they started digging up information of the persernal information of the staff such as their children which is just out of order. I think mindless of what side your on, going after the children of sony employees is just disgusting.

Secondly, the people who will influence the SOPA act are likely to view anonymous' actions as more of a reason to pass the act rather then being threatened by their actions. I don't support SOPA but Anonymous to a degree act a little hypicritical telling people they fight for the internet when their policing the internet themself without as much asking anyone if they wanted their help. Both sides are wrong really.

I agree with your points the ability to target other people who not done anything wrong to them, is just stupid all they will successfully acheive is another two stint without the PSN, where people will moan and complain, but this time not at Sony, it will be against the Anonymous group

Anonymous are confident because they got away with doing things like this a thousand times already, but they forget that when they get caught, it will be only once.
