Syndicate Subjected to Ban in Australia

Syndicate will be banned in Australia it seems, as the Australian Government Classification Board has refused a rating for Starbreeze Studios and EA's re-imagining of the 90s Bullfrog strategy title, on the grounds that it's simply far too violent and "therefore unsuitable for persons aged 18 years to play".

Here's what the classification board had to say on Syndicate and its reasoning for refusing the game a rating:

"The game contains violence that is high in impact and is therefore unsuitable for persons aged 18 years to play. Combatants take locational damage and can be explicitly dismembered, decapitated, or bisected by the force of the gunfire. The depictions are accompanied by copious bloodspray and injuries are shown realistically and with detail. Flesh and bone are often exposed while arterial sprays of blood continue to spirt [sic] from wounds at regular intervals."

That all sounds perfectly fine to us. If you were among those looking forward to breaching, hacking and corporate espionage, and you happen to live in Australia, you can once again thank the continued lack of a rating beyond the current MA15+ certificate. An 18+ rating is in the offing and has been approved for Australia, but it's still waiting to be passed, meaning Syndicate will remain banned for now.

Syndicate is definitely one of those non-mainstream FPS so I hope this won't penalize Starbreeze.
I really want this one to sell well ;)

That's a shame.
I was hoping that this would sell well and maybe show that your game hasn't got to be a pointy pointy pew pew military shooter to do well.

while I can understand the reasoning, the logic is beyond pointless.
australians can get a game imported from the UK cheaper than buying one local anyway. You ban the game, they buy it from play.com. Sureley there are economic issues to consider there too?

fuck me and a thought an adult over 18 years of age should be allowed to make his or her own mind up if they want to play a video game.
disappointing that your country is run by bigger dicks than in the uk.

shame.

tell me do you have to get permission to have sex? lol

I'm pretty sure that the getting an RC in australian certification (and feel free to correct me if I am wrong) means that it is illegal to sell in australia.
However, it is not illegal to own it (unless it has something illegal within it, IE. child sex stuff) meaning importing is perfectly legal assuming that there is no child rape within the game.

I'm not australian, I live in England so I am not 100% on the rules and regs, but I'm sure that's how it works

We've missed out on quite a few titles in the past because we don't have an 18+ rating, its ridiculous. I thought we eventually passed one though.
Ah well, just another game to import.

It's illegal to import banned games here...

But if you only buy one copy and caught they just take it off you, so don't import more or else they'll charge you for intent to sell :P

With my copy of mortal kombat KOLLECTORS EDITION I thik this will make it in...but I'll wiat a few months for the hear to die down.

From the wording of the original statement "is therefore unsuitable for persons aged 18 years to play" it sounds like they feel it would fail to get even an 18 certificate by their classification rules.

This is retarded.

I am so sick of our goverment. They allow ANY R+ movie to be released (Human Centipede 2 etc)but a game - noooooo.

I thought that this was changed. Perhaps the new classification system has not passed through the government yet. We did get dead island when it was supposed to be banned.

I guess they are too busy killing our economy with the carbon tax legislation.
