Dead Space 2
EA Looking to Transform Dead Space into Something... Different
Written Wednesday, November 30, 2011 By Lee Bradley

EA are planning substantial changes to the Dead Space series, with an FPS, a flight-based spin-off and an “Uncharted-like game” all being discussed.

Indeed, so dramatic are the publisher’s intentions that they nearly killed off the next instalment of the series, Dead Space 3.

According to Kotaku, new management at EA have instructed the Dead Space team to consider new ways of expanding the series, with the game in its current form failing to inspire consumers to the degree that they had hoped.

While Dead Space 2 shifted more than two million copies, an improvement on Dead Space 1, EA are still looking for further growth.

As it stands, Dead Space 3 is still in production. Adopting the series’ trademark over-the-shoulder third-person viewpoint, it is said that the game will be set on a bright white icy planet and will complete the story arc of protagonist Isaac Clarke.

But beyond that, expect some big changes. Whether or not they are for the best, however, is yet to be revealed.

As much as I like Dead Space, I'm not sure whether such changes would be good or not. Then again, they're spin-offs.

I guess we'll have to wait and see, huh?

any big changes like that and it wouldnt be deadspace. FPS wouldnt have the same atmospheric effect. why cant they make dead space 3 like they know how then make a new game. they are money grabbing whores...why they try and disappoint the consumer as well...sorry for the rant

Yep, that's what the industry needs!
Innovation, experimentation, risk-taking, AND ANOTHER FUCKING FPS!

At first i was like NOOOOOOOOOOOO my Dead Space 3!
Then i saw it was still there, phew...
Anyway though, with how awful two's marketing was its no surprise they didn't reel in as much as they could have potentially. The "Your Mom Hates Dead Space" campaign was by far one of the dumbest marketing ploys, if anything it very well may have even driven buyers away.
Now they want to expand on the DS universe, ok, that could be fun down the line. Just dont forget about the original concept that made it so great.

"Another fucking FPS" indeed... It's like the gaming industry knows nothing else nowadays.

Within the last 9 years we've had:

14 games for Call of Duty.
3 for Killzone.
3 Resistance.
And several others...

Like I said about the "Smash-Bros"-esque PS3 game, Originality. Who needs it?

Nothing more original and forward-thinking than an "Uncharted-like" game. Or an FPS.

Maybe we will get an "Angry Birds-like" Dead Space, or a Dead Space MMORPG. -_-

That's why I thought Extraction was pretty cool. A rail shooter. I mean, besides HotD, that was a fairly original concept. Sort of. Well, looks like I'll be done with the DS universe after 3.

I guess on the bright side, I'll save money. And never know what an "Assassin's Creed-like" Dead Space will play like. ;P

Honestly I think the games are great like they already are. I know I'd pass on a FPS, the flight based spin-off idea doesn't interest me either.

Let's hope they won't ruin the franchise.

"EA are planning substantial changes to the Dead Space series, with an FPS, a flight-based spin-off and an “Uncharted-like game” all being discussed."

Em how about no, dont need another FPS but what could be done is what Konami did for the MGS series which was give you the option to look down the sights like an FPS but not actually classed be one and as for a flight based spin off WTF is that supposed to be? sounds a bit crap.

I found that Dead Space 1 was a bit more eerie than Dead Space 2 so need more twisted ideas, gore and skin crawling sections for Dead Space 3. As for the being on an icy planet as Isaac it sounds more like Isaac has walked into the movie 'The Thing' lol

I still want "Planet Cracker" to come out. I thought it was an awesome idea for a PSN Resource Mining game.

As far as changing the depth of the universe they already did that enough for me with Dead Space 2. I am the 1%...that still thinks the first was better. 2 was too Hollywood blockbuster Michael Bay movie to me.

dont think a fps or a "uncharted" like game would work for dead space. Fps are usually just straight up all about shooting the enemy until they are a leaky piece of meat and the reason uncharted style works so well is because uncharted is big on exploration or at least seeing the enviroment around you. willing to play dead space even if it changes just don tknow how its gonna work out in the end

Money, money, money; all EA can think off. Yes, I know they`re a business, but they`ve thrown out regard for their customers to scrape a few extra bucks together.

Despicable, really. This isn`t expanding the franchise, but milking it.

For Uncharted-style, does that mean a shoddy shooter with some platforming? How the hell does that fit into Dead Space?

ah things like this are hard to know if it is a great idea or just a really bad one, hopefully it turns out well because with the story that they have woven through the games, books and videos this might work out to be really good, at least one can hope.

not to mention having a dead space game thats a different style could end up with things like having a swam of necros chasing you down.

Silent Hill. Well, they tried with Homecoming and failed a bit so they did a 180 and made the incredible Shattered Memories. Now that's a game I'd die to have an HD port for!

I actually think an FPS would do really well for deadspace!
Despite the over saturation of FPS games, dead space might mix it up well.

Think about it... the main "gimmick" of Dead Space is dismemberment right?
Well I can't think of any FPS game where you have to conciously aim for arms, legs or tentacles; where body shots/headshots do far far less damage.

Not to mention the Kinesis and Stasis mechanics throw a whole load of variety into the game!
While it might not go so well, I'm certainly willing to give it a chance.
At the end of the day, as long as it has the dead space feel, and scares grown men into crying like little girls.... I think it'll be good ;)

And this is why I hate it when big companies go for mainstream...

The general public just doesn't know what quality is! Sure, a game might sell better if it's a typical first person shooter or a sports game, but that doesn't make them great games!

if it ain't broke, don't fix it! the only thing they need to change from Dead Space 2 is to bring back the disorienting map design from Dead Space 1. everything they need is already there, and they're going off and pulling a Nintendo?

I wouldn't mind another Dead Space: Extraction... This franchise manages to embrace multiple game concepts pretty well, though Ignition was a stumbling block. And since they've expanded the lore into movies/books/comics, I'll keep an open mind to see what they come with next to tell the story.

I really do wish they would ask the whole gaming community and find out if M.P is needed and should they make a FPS type game, I loved DS1 as for DS2 it was also great just I felt the M.P was not needed.

Games like Uncharted, Dead Space, BioShock 2 & Assassins Creed are all some of the game I wish they just focus on the single player side only and make the game massive. They could with the space used for MP mode and it's stuff I dont play any of the M.P modes well only ones I did was BioShock 2 and I am forced to play ACR for towards the platinum since I am so close and have finished most of the single player ones.

@12, I think the figure is a little higher than 1%, but even so, I'm in that margin too. Dead Space was a genuinely creepy atmospheric game. Dead Space 2 was just a generic action shooter in space. And the ending was f***ing terrible.

If they decide to make it into a FPS, should we expect something like Doom? I'd be happy if that were the case. I don't see why people are upset because they are considering a FPS. Just because a game is in a first person perspective, it doesn't mean that game will fail or be great. I prefer games in first person, but I also believe there should be an option for first person and third person. I really hope they come back strong with Dead Space 3 and everyone is able to enjoy it.

@12 & @36 yeah DEAD SPACE 1 was better and way creepier than the 2nd although I did enjoy the ending for DEAD SPACE 2.

I dont know what EAs standards were for DEAD SPACE but I thougt it was a pretty successful franchise and I absolutely hate how all the companies think that for a game to be great it has to be a FPS. That genre is getting old now, hopefully they end it with 3 or like #17 said "they wont be expanding the frachise but milking it"and then it will end up like Halo & COD.

@17 Well said by the way.

Don't care what they do with spin offs would skip any FPS ones so sick of the genre as a whole. Do care that they release another one like two it was the shocker of the year game wise for me expected to find it mediocre ended up loving it.

Love the Dead Space universe. The first game was my most pleasant surprise for this gen of consoles, and I've sunk myself into the universe since.
The comic, book & 2 films are all great addons and enhance my experience of the games. #1 is still unrivalled as it was much more in the vein of the classic survival horror games, while 2 strayed to much towards action shooter, Ignition functioned as a nice mini-puzzle game and Extraction is a great light-gun game.

That said, I'm very open to new takes on the Dead Space universe, as long as it's carefully integrated into the existing story/mythology & is a good and/or scary entertainment, but I hope they don't kill of the franchise with it. I can easily imagine a great FPS coming from it, something in the vein of Doom & Blood, but more slowpaced and nervewrecking. Doubt that captures a wide enough audience to be granted the Success stamp of EA though

I had to read all the way down to #41 before someone mentioned how varied the Dead space IP has become:

survival horror games (2)
first-person rail shooter
puzzle game
comic books (2)
a novel
animated films (2)
music albums (2)

I think the article title is misleading, EA is looking to expand the IP, not transform it, they are still making dead space 3 right?
