Heavy Rain
No Chance of a Heavy Rain Sequel, Says Cage
Written Wednesday, September 28, 2011 By Lee Bradley
View author's profile

Looks like we’ll never see a sequel to Heavy Rain. Quantic Dream boss David Cage has said he'll never make Heavy Rain 2, as he is not in videogames to “make money.”

Speaking to Develop, Cage revealed that he would rather his studio press ahead with new ideas.

“Let me be stupid for one second; I’m not in this business to make money,” he said. “I wrote Heavy Rain because I was excited about it, because there was something to say.

“Yeah I could make Heavy Rain 2, but I’ve said what I’ve had to say about it. That’s the strength of Quantic Dream, to have the capacity to create new ideas, to make something that breaks ground.

“I don’t know what to say. I guess I don’t have a long-term strategy for my career. It’s certainly not to make as much money as possible though. I see myself as an author, really. I just trust my instinct. I think fans of what I do want me to do that too.

“I’m an old game creator. I’m 42 this year. There are so many old game designers who have passion when they are young and they get a bit a bit older and the passion falls away. They get a family, and suddenly they think ‘okay I need to make as much money as I can for my family – this is what matters.’ I’ve not reached that stage yet.

“I still think I’m doing something important. That may sound naïve in this industry, but I still think I’m here to be creative. I just have a company because I need that structure to develop my ideas.”

Cage also revealed his displeasure at the way his previous game, Fahrenheit, was marketed by Atari in the US. He said the US name for the game, Indigo Prophecy, was “fucking stupid.”

“They have this image of their market being gun-loving red-necks,” he said. “It’s completely wrong.”

Lol lets see what Sony Computer Entertainment has to say about him not making games for the money.

I would have agreed with everything Cage had to say, but then realised hes full of it.
Sure there wont be a Heavy Rain sequel, though not because he is personally is not in it
for the money, after all...the Heavy Rain movie deal with Warner Bros Studios is not
about money either, its being made because "there was something to say"...

And for the record, I say this as a non gun-loving, non red-neck... Indigo Prophecy was a
far better fitting name for the old title than Fahrenheit and he knows it.
He was and still is just pissy, that the company who was paying his bills got it right and he didn't.

I really liked Heavy Rain. Im surprised to hear all the negative comments about it. I heard nothing but positive things when it first came out which led me to buy it.

On the other hand I am glad to hear there would be no sequel. It would be kinda hard to make one anyways considering there was no "final" ending. They could do a spin-off but a direct sequel is almost impossible.

The karma system is just badly used. About seven people have been thumbed down just for voicing their opinions which is really what the comment section is for.

I liked Heavy Rain but it was really one of those one time only games, it dosen't need a sequal or you just end up ruining it. David Cage sounds ok and I like that he's in it for the creative side but I think that last bit came off a bit harsh.

Atari are after all responsible in a sense for the games industry actually exsisting (of course not completly but still). Perhaps Indigo Prophecy wasn't a good title for the game but is that honestly any worst then what other publisher companies have done? Plus if anyone had any decency or respect in the games industry they'd help Atari out of bankruptcy or are they simply forgetting the reason their making money in the first place?

let's be realistic, if heavy rain was a movie it would be one those tenth rate crime thrillers that air at 4am on some cheap cable channel.

The fact it was a videogame is what gave it all it's praise because it was doing something that videogames hadn't done before, an interactive movie.... oh wait no hang on, fahrenheit, omikron: nomad soul, wing commander etc etc, it's been done before, it just happened to have flashier graphics then the rest.

I believe he's not in it for the money, but not for the creative ideals he claims, i think it's more about him not being as amazing as his own hype makes him out to be.

Fahrenheit (an infinitely better name then indigo prophecy, though neither really relate to the game) is one of those games i really enjoyed, but i understand about the ending seeming rushed to cash in and provide possibilities for a sequel.

Cage is the reason we should be happy. Finally, games are as serious a medium as film. No, not because they'll change your lives and make you turn over a new leaf because of how inspiring the narrative was. But because we finally have pretentious French assholes who think they make masterpieces. Bravo, David Cage. Way to buck the system.

This is quite refreshing to hear actually. I did enjoy HR, it was a unique and fun experience, but that doesn't mean it needs to continue. Some of my favorite movies and books don't have sequels, and my games shouldn't be any different. And just because something doesn't have a sequel/prequel or whatever takes nothing away from its quality and goodness.

There is no point to make a sequel for heavy rain. If there was one then what would be the point of having multiple endings to view? The game is and will always be great as an emotional, what-if scneario that asks "will you do anything to save your son/daughter?"

Heavy Rain was one of my most anticipated games ever. I really liked it although playing through multiple times for the platinum trophy tarnished the experience. Cage did recommend just playing through once. No the game was not perfect but it was very original. The only reason that Cage is so outspoken is because he is frustrated with the negative stereotypes placed on gamers and the medium of gaming as a whole. He is a game designer who sticks up for camera and thinks they are intelligent. He believes in gaming as being as relevant as film, music, or lierature or even more so. I respect that.

I'm glad that there won't be a sequel. The story was done. As much as I like sequels- I'm looking forward to uncharted, bioshock, mass effect, etc.- a good original game is always what I look forward to the most. Even though LA Noire had its flaws, it might end up being the GOTY in my eyes because it was something new. I hope David Cage continues to come up with new ideas. It will benefit the industry and gamers.

It's good to have people like David Cage in the video game business. He is willing to make a game the way he wants. Say what he wants to say. He's not in it for the money. If he was, he'd try to do do something mainstream, like first-person shooters.

I'll make a comparison to the music industry. For all of you who like this modern day "pop" music, you are listening to mediocrity. When I say that, I mean it's music made to be average so that it's not slow enough to make you think it's a lullaby and it's not outlandish to the point that your ears are bleeding. It's the same 4-beat, 3 minute, extended ringtone style that they will not deviate from because it would make listeners uncomfortable and would therefore compromise profit.

Now, in my music scenario, Cage is like an Indie artist. He's experimenting with 7 beats and lyrics with meaning. He's doing what he wants and saying what he wants. He's truly the one who is enjoying his job. So you may not be getting something everyone thinks is good, but at least he's not a conformist. Cage has my approval.

As much as I loved Heavy Rain, i only wish that we got the other dlc that was going to be made, other then that it would be nice to see him make another game (a different game that is) because how good he is at it.

Though yeah it was a idiotic name atari gave his game here, and its pretty idiotic over all to rename a game for north america or the uk, sue i can see renaming a japanise game, but not renaming a games title that is in english to start.

Farenheit didn't sell well in the US because the whole 2nd half of the game was "fucking stupid". It was a jumbled mess of plot points and felt like it was rushed, unfinished, or farmed out to another company to complete.

Games like Farenheit make money over longer sales cycles and not huge day 1 purchases. It didn't have a long sales cycle because people heard the 2nd half was crap and didn't buy it. It didn't even crack the top 10 on Steam when it was $5 a couple years ago.

Sometimes Mr. Cage, the problem is you - not everyone else. Its not always marketing, name changes, used game sales... sometimes the game just isn't that great.

Heavy Rain is incredibly drama video game ever I've playing. However the sequel of Heavy Rain is out of question! The killer raise from dead? or the copycat killer? That's why Cage once said "a sequel of sequel of sequel is actually nonsense."

all you people bashing heavy rain must be out of your minds, how can you say a game with 27 different endings doesnt have an in depth story or that it is way over rated. its a choose your adventure game, if you didnt like the story maybe you should have made better choices in the game! i will say im quite disapointed that only one dlc was released (which had no trophies) but other then that, this game was amazing!!! why dont you smartass pessimistic people name another game with 27 endings and a story as mature and dramatic as this one........and i dont wanna hear L.A. noire, noire is an awesome game in its own right, but not even close to what this game (heavy rain) has to offer. i hate to say it but i think L.A. Noire is a game more worthy of your criticism.....that game (l.a. noire) had a cheap storyline and absolutely atrocious ending!

Wow, you'll are hating on me something wicked, but that's okay. Because, in my opinion, the game still sucks even with 27 endings and a "mature story". If i want that, I'll watch a great movie. Sorry that you like slow and boring, to each there own, but I am not thumbs downing everyone. It is simply truth, this game is nothing new, nor ground breaking. The style has been around and has been changing year after year. Is it more in depth than its predecessors, sure, doesn't make it great though. Only you decide if it is great and I decide not.

@33 - Everyone one is a conformist, to be a non conformist means you do not exist, you are always following someone else foundation laid before you. That is conforming. Granted, I'll give you that he is trying to stand out and not rehash the same old rubbish like most companies. Good music reference, but it is still personal taste. I have heard many Indie artists, 7 beats and meaningful lyrics that.... suck!

I hate both followers and Conformist, I think it's only bad when your doing it based purely because you believe something good will come out of following something like for instance you just say you like Ghostbusters because it's a good film and you think people will like you if you pretend to like it. It seems sad. Have your own persernal taste why should other people define what you like?

But at the same time these "Non-Conformist" piss me off even more. The whole "It's not bad it's just unpopular because it refuses to conform to the norm" is bullshit.

As for FPS games their not mainstream, their popular and companies want to make games that are popular because YES they want to make money and even if David Cage claims he's not in it for the money then he's the biggest fucking lier in the games industry. He's 42, he has a family, do you honestly think he'd be saying he wasn't in it for the money with the sitaution he's in if he wasn't making a lot of money? David Cage couldn't afford to be in the games industry for the creativity and really David Cage is like an indie artist?! Heck no he isn't! Heavy Rain was a good game but ir had huge plot holes and was a one off. David Cage was a good designer but where I can't support someone who honestly thinks they can bash one of the biggest companies in the games industry.

PACMAN, SPACE INVADERS, PONG, When anything David has made has reached a cult following as huge as these titles THEN he can bash Atari.

Despite the success and thrill of Heavy Rain, I knew without denial that this magnificent story will not have any continuations. Heavy Rain had the most unigue gameplay and interactions, as well as a very sentimental soundtrack. Love it all! Remains in my Top 5 List of games!

thats the beauty of the game, it plays out like a movie. its a work of art to me....you can say "if i wanted long scenes id go watch a movie" but that is what makes the game great, when you can blur the lines of games and cinema you have something great on your hands. i apologize for being one dimensional, i should have just left it at "thats your opinion" but i really do enjoy the break from go here, collect this, shoot this and hit the checkpoint. their is just so much of that style that a game like heavy rain was a breath of fresh air for me. sorry for being a dick before.

First off, I certainly hope that this doesn't mean that any future HR Chronicles will be shelved because of this.

But anyways, its too bad that there won't be a sequel, but Cage summed it up by saying he's an author and not in it just to make the money and I really respect the guy's frank honesty. Add Cage to Thatgamecompany's stable of folks in my list for people who are trying to make some difference in the videogame world :)

how about a new story?

Yeah...it's good that there won't be a sequel. Whatever your opinion on the story is (and I do have a few negative things to say about it, but I already stated those things in the Heavy Rain forum anyway :p), it's a self-contained game. A sequel would ruin it.

I hope he makes another game. Heavy Rain was interesting, if not quite as amazing as I was expecting. Here's to hoping that there will be a female character who a) is there for more than exploitation sequences and b) there won't be a sex scene that actually -detracts- from the story (seriously...time is running out to save your sun, and you stop to sleep with someone you barely know? Made me cringe).

In a world where people make movies that end on plot twists and cliffhangers (see every horror franchise ever) it's nice to see someone just step back and say, "there, that's that, now let's try something else". Heavy Rain is one of my favorite games because I think it's creative and compelling, and if Quantic Dream comes out with another game that I like it should be for the same reasons, not because it's My Favorite Game Part 2.

I'm ok with his decision. If he feels is over the story, then let him create something new for us to play and enjoy :).

(SPOILERS)

Then what's with the Maddison/Vincent encounter at the book signing? That seems like a cheap opening for a sequel to me.

I find that great, sequels are usually codswallop to make money out of the gamers, as himself even said. I for one would prefer it there was no sequel. That doesn't mean we won't see any other game of the kind (Interactive Drama/Interactive Film), it means we just won't see any other bollocks after such great story and game. With his skills, it certainly will be another good game of the genre soon, just it won't be a bloody sequel, it will be a different story and different game, but of the same quality. Think about you lot that are sad about not having a sequel.
