During our Gamescom interview with Dishonored Co-Creative Directors, Harvey Smith and Raphael Colantonio, we asked the duo about the role that trophies will play in the game, given its remit of combining supernatural powers, abilities and weapons. Turns out that trophies (referred to as achievements by Smith and Colantonio during the interview) will help to "encourage the player to explore the edges" according to Smith.
"We do for instance have low chaos, high chaos, high combat, high stealth achievements, of course. And we have mission completion achievements, but we also see achievements as a way to encourage the player to explore the edges of the simulation," Smith told PS3T. "Like if we have features in the game that other games don't have and we have potential combinations and creative ways to kill people, creative ways to slip past them, creative ways to combine things, then we want to throw some achievements in that direction as well. Not just [for] players doing things [that are] very difficult, but also doing things creatively."
Smith then cited a possible example. "Earlier Raf talked about stopping time in a room with six guards, firing a crossbow bolt in the air at each one, and when time resumes, all the crossbow bolts hit at once and they all die at once. That's a good example. Imagine 'achievement unlocked - you killed six people in one second', that kind of thing. There are even crazier stories about different combinations."
Obviously, he means 'trophy unlocked'. Colantonio then went on to reveal that Dishonored could also include a trophy in which you have to complete the game without killing anyone, like Deus Ex: Human Revolution's 'Pacifist' trophy.
"This is a huge achievement: being able to complete the game without killing anyone," said Colantonio. "That would be an interesting one."
