Call of Duty: Elite
Call of Duty: Elite Preview - Offering You More Bang For Your Buck

Project Beachhead has been a talking point for Activision behind-closed-doors for quite some time now. With it rearing its head during many investor conference calls for quite a while and even having its own studio behind it, Activision is hoping that this initiative will give its stock another kick in the right direction. We headed to London last week to check out the new piece of tech in action. Ladies and gents, let us run you through Project Beachhead, AKA Call of Duty: Elite.

Call of Duty: Elite is Activision’s new statistic-based application for Call of Duty that intends to bring the 7 million daily players together and enhance their Call of Duty fans' multiplayer experience. Available online, through your game and coming to mobiles the world over, Elite will give players the chance to enrich and expand their online service by offering players many new features that Activision hopes will unite the Call of Duty service.

At its core, Call of Duty: Elite allows players to access a ton of in-depth stats that span across every Call of Duty product from Black Ops onwards. Whether you want to know your kill/death ratio, your average XP per game, your form, how many times you finished in the top 3 players, your earnings per match, your accuracy with any of the game’s weapons, and so on, Call of Duty: Elite has you covered. Outside of that though, there are three core elements to the Call of Duty: Elite experience: connect, compete and improve.

With Call of Duty: Elite, Activision hopes to bring players together to ‘connect’ to other Call of Duty players in many ways. This includes joining and creating groups, where you can play with players who share a common interest, like X360A, photography or your local sports team, for instance. Being able to compare stats against friends and other players also falls under the ‘connect’ heading, as does watching and sharing videos with the millions of other Call of Duty players. It’s all about bringing players together.

The compete aspect of Call of Duty: Elite will allow players to participate in a whole variety of different ways and in some instances, will allow players to get involved to win some cool prizes – which will be region specific says Activision. Players then will be able to compete using Elite’s clan support, group vs. group matchups, leagues, clan vs. clan, but the lure for a lot of players will be the events that players can enlist in, with prizes like iPad 2s and more being offered. A few examples of the events on offer were for getting the best Semtex grenade stick kill, the best sniper headshot video – which carried with it an exclusive competition badge and $20 gift card for Starbucks – and for those that might not consider themselves talented enough to compete for such events, there will be events for those that might be more talented in other regions, like a photography event for the best themed screenshot.

Last but not least, the improve aspect of the core aspects allows players to analyse their recent performance, take advice from Call of Duty pros with video tips, detailed information on guns/perks/maps, etc. – even offering suggestions for perks and loadouts – and even giving things like heat-maps to see where you perhaps fell into trouble. Its intention is to help players, both new and seasoned, to be able to improve as a player which will also enhance their Call of Duty enjoyment.

Call of Duty: Elite will come in two flavours when it drops later in the year: free and premium, i.e. a monthly fee. There is no word on price yet, which Activision said will come later on in the year, or anything on whether there will be a minimum subscription period, but they briefly touched upon what players can expect if they pay for the subscription service. Such bonuses include leagues, clans and possibly more importantly, access to DLC for Modern Warfare 3 at no extra cost. Such things as the stats-based services will be available for free, for everyone. Activision was keen to stress that Call of Duty: Elite won’t be changing the Call of Duty boxed package and this new initiative is merely a companion to the overall CoD experience.

Activision’s aim with Elite isn’t to charge for Call of Duty’s online multiplayer. Nothing of the sort actually, as Activision reiterated that they would never charge for that aspect of the CoD, it’s merely to give something to those who are willing to pay to enrich their multiplayer experience. Even those who don’t pay still get access to a whole host of new options though. While it’s not as ground-breaking as Activision wants us to believe – after all, Bungie.net and Bungie Pro have been doing something similar for sometime now – it is a neat initiative for those who are long-term Call of Duty players or those that want to be. With prizes for competitions, clans, free MW3 DLC and more promised for premium subscribers, the potential is there for gamers to expand their Call of Duty multiplayer experience, but whether there’ll be any takers remains to be seen. At the end of the day though, whether players subscribe or not, the free aspects of Call of Duty: Elite is enough to entice and excite even the most anti-Call of Duty player, after all, you get a much more enriched experience for no extra cost. And who says that Activision was only out to take your money? This should suggest otherwise!

Call of Duty: Elite is coming this fall and will be an integral part of Modern Warfare 3.

Lotta features admittedly but nothing that useful, basically just more money they want from us in my opinion, however many people are still gunna get this and MW3 on day release, including me, only for the story then a quick trade in to make £10, hoorah ;)

Won't be paying for any extras unless MW3 some how ends up being one of the best game ever.

Be good for people who play COD all of the time but not for anyone else.

Probably the only selling point this has is that it will come with the map packs at no extra cost. This is essentially the service Halo has had on Bungie.net for the past few years for no cost whatsoever.

"lots of stuff to enhance call of duty experiance" errrm how about make it a finished product before releasing it, stop upping the price of dlc, stop hackers ruining online, get a grip on bringing the same thing out every year (creativity did not kill the cat) stop finding ridiculous ways of milking fans and make a phenomenal game again like cod 4 all the above would also enhance the "CoD experience" and it wouldn't come in a monthly subscription. What this is saying to me is that activision could make the game really good and interesting etc but they won't do it for the good of the fans they want to monitarise it instead bastards!!!

Most of the stuff they provide there is provided for free by other games, maybe not as in depth and finished but its not really worth it.

But this is COD, it has a huge user base and it's a pretty good tool for clans so it'll have a limited sucess

Nice, I love a depth stats system. Especially when I can check them out in-game and online. Even though it's silly, an in-depth stats system usually makes me play a game longer. Especially when I can link my friends to my stats pages somehow. I feel the stats is about a quarter of the reason I played Battlefield 2 for almost 600 hours.
So with that, I hope the detailed stats part of the program is free. I hope it only costs money if you want to try to win prizes and all that other stuff (which I don't care about).

Anyways, I'll be picking up MW3 (side note: and BF3). I just hope it's a bit more balanced online than MW2 was/is.

It says that you will be able to see ur stats for everything but you can do that anyway u just go to ur playercard and check lol. And I do clan v clan matches all the time, so the only new thing is earn some prizes (which you won't do if u also have a life, it'll be people with no jobs or gfs etc) and tips which u don't really need once u learn the maps.. So what's the pont??

this is completely ridiculous, i really dont like where games are heading now, and im affraid your to blame, all of you who buy dlc and play dc universe, if you get suckered into it and pay then the next developer see's their a market fot this and you fools are willing to pay £7.99 for dlc thats already on the disc you bought for £50 if you dont do this then they wont charge but your all suckers, i have never paid for anything other that the disc, if cod then decides it wants to bring a new map out then it better be free or i simply dont buy it, i see my gaming days are numbered as i wont be able to afford it for much longer, shame.

They would have to pay me to get this come on, I have played COD since number 2 online and I am glad to say I kick ass at everyone of these games with a 2.00 K/D in every game and a 3.00 in MW2 due to Chopper gunnner but I still would never buy anything like this I am very tried of COD online its a big reason I made my jump to PS3 from 360 since I wanted some other game to play online other then Halo and Gears of War since COD is on both I was like why no enjoy it for free just really. -End rant- But over all neat to at least add something maybe someone might enjoy it and buy it see how it fans out with what they add to it really I guess.

and BFBC2 aka EA/DICE did there stat tracking all that for free on there website and it worked good now ACTIVISION wants you to pay for this crappy service LOL i dont think i will be bothering with it i rarely play online because to me its just not COD4 at all they just milking the franchise now for all they can get

I dont like the direction COD is going in Activison this service should come standard along with DEDICATED SERVERS black ops in its first 6 weeks sold 1 billion copies i know its about making profit in the industry but how about giving something back to the fans the community the people that buy your game and got you where you are today some appreciation would be nice.

on that note BATTLEFIELD 3 is looking awesome and im sure alot of only COD players will be picking up MW3 & BATTLEFIELD 3 now lets see which they like the most because Activision will be losing alot of players in my eyes wroing direction for COD

Screw this. I'll wait a couple of months and buy it used for $20 just to see how they wrap up the MW storyline. Rage, Dead Island, Resistance 3, Battlefield 3 and Uncharted 3 will
be more deserving of day 1 attention from me instead of this cash grabbing $hit.

so this will only be avaliable for ps3 and not pc right? it sounds like a great thing and if i get a ps3 anytime soon i'll be downloading this,if it comes out soon i'll go ahead and throw it on my psn account at a friends house.

I take it there will only be stats for black ops or will it be for modern warfare 1 and 2 along with black ops?

I dont see any use on it. all they want is money and im not paying for it because BFBC2 its free on that and i can see all my stats on one page. thats why I only play EA/DICE games, gave up on COD games when black ops came out because they just want money. And its only ment for the hardcore COD players.(should have came out when COD4 and MW2 came out lol)

My only concern is that they take out features for this new incentive. But if you get the core experience with the retail game and then "if you want to" you can dish out some extra dough for those little extras.

When COD offers an online multiplayer that every grandma and 5 year old doesn't instantly become a FPS pro and actually requires skill, dexterity and technique then this might actually be a credible feature. Until then I'll stick to the great single player story and after completion of the campaign it will be utilized for the only other things it's worth after that: trade bait or a coaster.

Fecking robbing bastards, all dlc is a rip off made long before the game is released just to get the saddo's out there to part with there mummy and daddys cash.
