Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock
Activision Shelves Both True Crime: Hong Kong & its Guitar Hero

Activision has just announced ahead of its fourth quarter earnings call this evening that they will be shelving both the long-standing Guitar Hero franchise and True Crime: Hong Kong, which was scheduled for a 2011 release.

The official news follows a report on that reported that sources had told them that they would be axing both franchises and focussing the majority of its efforts on the Call of Duty franchise and Blizzard’s Starcraft and World of Warcraft.

According to the press release, because of the “continued declines in the music genre,” Activision’s Guitar Hero business unit will be disbanded and they will “discontinue development on its Guitar Hero game for 2011.” True Crime on the other hand seems to be all but cancelled, with the publisher announcing they will “stop development.”

“These decisions are based on the desire to focus on the greatest opportunities that the company currently has to create the world's best interactive entertainment experiences,” says the press release.

"There will be no new music or skateboarding franchises in 2011," said Activision during the call.

The news will come as no surprise to anyone really, with music sales slumping in recent years and with Activision’s recent cost cutting rampage, which saw them announce the closure of Bizarre Creations.

Activision did, however, announce that Bungie’s property is still in their long term plans, and that, along with Call of Duty and “an innovative new universe with broad appeal that... will bring the world of toys, video games and the Internet together in an unprecedented way” will ensure long-term growth, enabling it to continue expanding its position as the largest digital publisher.

I wonder whether Activision have heard the saying about putting all their eggs in one basket...

More on this as it breaks.

No more Guitar Hero? Am I alone in saying I'm relieved?
After 3 it all went downhill in my opinion.

Can't say I'll miss them....

So by focusing more time of the CoD franchise does this mean the next one will actually be any good? :P

Well I dont really care about guitar hero... I always like rock band more. But I was kinda looking forward to true crime. I think its pretty stupid canceling development on a game thats half or more than half way finished. They might as well finish it and make what they can on it then just dont start any new projects, then slowly move the freed up developers to call of duty or whatever. But what there doing is wearing out call of duty. I mean they just said they ruined guitar hero in little wording, then they say there going to just start pumping out call of duties in another article? I mean wasn't there 4 call of duties in development at this moment in time? Yeah great plan. o_O

Not that bothered about the GH news, but from what I saw True Crime was very nearly finished? was really looking forward to it. Just release it and recoup back atleast some of what they've spent on it? All for more CoD, great going.

Has this day really come? Guitar Hero has not been fun in a very long time, since 3 really. I like how they are canceling once decent series for this year at least. Tony Hawk 2 is one of the best games ever made and the originals were so good. I'm happy to see Ride/Shred not continue.

Oh Activision... *sigh/headshake* Finish and release True Crime then work on Call of Duty... I'm not bothered about Call of Duty, Guitar Hero (it was bound to end eventually, there's only so many variations of the same game you can release and rip off people with weekly paid for DLC) or Tony Hawk (the newer games had become stale) but they could at least release True Crime: Hong Kong before they milk another franchise (Call of Duty) for every last penny they can before killing it.

Could this be that Transformers sequel?
Technically it's still a new universe.

Is it just me or does that last pharse sound like Bobby Kotick's making the death star of videogames? I'm not sure we should be happy. It seems like Activision has another Call of Duty by which I mean another FPS game to overmilk till only their obnoxious fanboys play it.

I'm OK with Guitar Hero being gone...but to cancel True Crime Hong Kong...which was almost done? And to focus only on CoD? Way to move the industry forward.

That kind of sucks I was actually looking forward to a new True Crime game. Guitar Hero on the other hand has been dead to me and it's a relief to see it taken out of its misery. And I'm betting they are focusing only on the games that make them a shit load of money *cough* Call of Duty *cough* Yeah fuck it I'm done with Call of Duty as well. Okay I would like to say that but I would probably rent MW3 just to see what they did with the story...

Seems Activision is moving away from the console and focusing it's efforts more on PC titles. With the exception of CoD, all of the other mentioned titles were Blizzard created and only on PC. However, I do recall a post some months back that Blizzard's Diablo 3 has a chance to come to consoles.

Im happy to see guitar hero being put away because I really hate music games like that, but sucks about True Crime because it was looking pretty good.

Though such a pathetic reason to do so, not working on other games to work mostly on mindless shooters.

All the people moaning about more CoDs and that CoD is shit arethe exact same idiots who are buying the recycled shit that is the CoD franchise, since Mw2 nothing has changed in the CoD series except the theme and setting yet millions of mindless idiots still run out and buy it on release so is it any surprise activision are gonna focus on CoD and nothing else, no not really when people actually stop buying CoD which is more recycled and less innovative than yearly sports titles we might see activation focus on making new IPs!

That's what happens when you constantly rehash a series.
Within the next ten years the same thing will happen to Call of Duty, guaranteed.

looks like im the only one that will (kind of) miss guitar hero. i mean, is good to let the franchise rest, and that's what i understand after reading the article, but killing it along with true crime?? that's wrong in my opinion, even more wrong, to do it for focusing on call of duty. well, as long as at least we still have dlc songs...

THANK GOD! Guitar Hero was inferior to Rock Band anyways. I don't know how to feel about True Crime because I wasn't a fan of the first one but this is definitely good news to me.

Is the Guitar Hero franchise finally going to die? If this is true, then I am so rejoicing....GH went on for too long....

Now all they need to do is kill the Halo franchise and I'll be happy, as the CoD franchise, I don't care if it keeps on going or not, it's okay for the time being in my books :P

Guitar Hero followed the path of many a musician: Started out as the awesomest thing ever, became a sell out, and then died.

Oh, great! They cancel True Crime to release another shitty CoD-title? Just great!
And what about the employees who worked very hard on that True Crime-game for all those years? Are they forced to work on shitty CoD-DLC just like Raven Software or are they fired all together like happened with Bizarre Creations?

Bobby Kotick is a cancer in the gameindustry, it's time he gets removed before the entire industry dies.

I'll really miss Guitar Hero. I actually own all of them (yep, even Van Halen) and I liked what they did with Warriors of Rock, starting with the music selection. Well, at least I've got 400 songs to play for a while. Maybe they'll re-think it and do it as a "game every two years" sorta deal.
