Overwatch Won't Have Competitive Play at Launch

Overwatch's latest beta won't include ranked Competitive Play, and won't be active in the game until "sometime after" the full game launches on 24th May. Competitive Play had been planned for the beta, but has been temporarily disabled until Blizzard manages to work out the balance.

"We worked extremely hard to get Competitive Play in the game for closed beta," says Game Director Jeff Kaplan on the Overwatch forums. "We've been reading feedback from the community and taking it all to heart. As a result, we've temporarily disabled Competitive Play for Open Beta so that we can rework the system and make it better."

Since Overwatch's Competitive Play is unbalanced in the state it was when added to the closed beta in April, Blizzard plans to reactivate it in the game shortly after release. "Our plan is to bring back a newly re-designed version of Competitive Play sometime after Overwatch launches," said Kaplan.

"Thanks for all of the feedback, and thank you for being patient with us while we work to improve the game," he concludes.

The Overwatch open beta is live now for anyone who pre-ordered the game before 29th April, while it'll go All Access for everyone on 5th May until 9th May. If you have an early access code, you need to activate it using a Battle, net account in order to connect to the servers.

  • LMAO Shitzzard at its best! Why pushback release date when we can just sell an unfinished, unbalanced product and roll with it.
  • Better to release working game without some content then broken game with it all as many has done in the past. Will download beta today and finally try it out. I love Blizzard for most other titles (could never get into WoW), so having high hopes here=)
  • This game is pretty good! But it's so hard to find randoms with mic. How will we make friends like that? HAHA
  • can we please have a full length movie instead?
  • #2 How about not releasing an unfinished product? No? Never thought about that? Have fun in broken unbalanced game, Shitzzard fanboy!
  • @1 Unfinished product? lolwut The game overall is very well polished. Even in the earlier betas it was in what could be considered a releasable state. Hell, it's even extremely well optimized, which is more than what most other AAA titles nowadays can claim.
  • So it won,t have competitive gameplay at launch? Great! I enjoyed the beta but as mentioned many times i,m kinda over the whole competitive shit awhile ago. Every game seems the must have it these days, i rather enjoy a good gampaign or an awesome co-op game. But hey thats me, i geuss most rather go shoot other gamers in games right? I never enjoyed the whole going roque thing in The Division either, sure when i seen groups who teamed up with another group and terrorized the DZ, the worst are those camping at the checkpoints. But back to the game at hands, Overwatch has some cool gameplay and looks different and so i,m sure it will build up a good fanbase. But i wait and got my time cut out with Uncharted 4 anyways.
  • @5 - hahahaha Shitzzard! That is seriously the funniest thing I've read in a long time. It's like through some fantastic stroke of pure genius you were able to take the completely separate and unrelated words of "shit" and "Blizzard" and somehow marry them up into a single word! And then use said word not once, but twice! I don't know how you did it, but please promise you will never stop, you mad word smith you. What a pure delight you are.
  • #8 I love you too!
  • Wow wow overwatch hype officially killed. Blizzard sucks
  • You'll still be able to play online in case anybody is thinking you'll be stuck playing against bots for a while. It'll have quick play just like the beta. I'm assuming "competitive" will be like they have seasons in Diablo 3 or something similar.
