10% PS Store Discount Offer Detailed

Sony has detailed the 10 per cent discount deal offered to PlayStation Network members as an apology for the Christmas downtime.

Discount codes will be distributed via the PlayStation Twitter feed and the PlayStation Store. The codes will be active from 9am GMT / 9am PT on January 23rd until 9am GMT / 9am PT on January 26th.

PS Plus members affected by the downtime will receive a five-day extension to their membership. Emails informing members of the extension are being rolled out now, says Sony.

The PlayStation Network was brought down by distributed denial of service attacks over the holiday period, preventing users from logging in, buying content, accessing cloud saves and playing online games.

Lizard Squad took responsibility for the attack, following promises to that effect in the run-up to Christmas. Arrests have since been made.

  • A discount on purchases still means that their 'apology' for the downtime is to try and get more money from us.
  • fucking typical, starts from the 23rd, a day after the price on some games I want go up (Walking Dead Season 1 being one of them)
  • Stupid lizards! Well, at least it's comng
  • discount starts when the sale ends....worse apology ever if I have to spend a penny...it aint an apology for loosing the use of a service ive already paid for
  • How about some free shit instead of discounts, dont mean to sound ungrateful. But that would make the apology a little more sweeter.
  • Like I mentioned on the .com site. What did Microsoft give for being down? Absolutely nothing. So get over yourselves and just be thankful we got anything.
  • a DDOS attack is basically unpreventable, so I'm not expecting anything, but would have been nice to give it to coincide with the sale
  • Do you know what? Fuck that discount! Sony could have gave "cyber crime" the middle finger by giving us a FREE movie! HINT: more appropriately THE INTERVIEW... come on, it would be fun! LOL
  • Sony should give us a 10€/10$/10£ voucher. That would be a nice way to apologise, not giving us a 10% discount so we spend more money in their products! Come on Sony, you can do better!
  • Right after the sale ends, when I might have actually spent something.
  • 3 days notice we will get 3 days to use a 10% discount, gee thanks!
  • They didn't have to give us anything so I'm thankful for the discount but annoyed that the code is only valid for 3 days. I would've liked to have saved it for a game I want...
  • Oh boohoo, get the fuck over yourselves, you're already getting 5 days of free plus and 10% discount code. If you're not a moron you're going to use that on big ticket items that weren't on sale in the first place and save yourselves a lot more instead of 50p on a sale game! Unrealistic, self-entitled bunch of whinge bags like these people who shit on a generally great community/
  • @6 and that's precisely why M$ are 3:1 behind Sony in console sales
  • @14 Source? Last I saw it wasn't even 2:1
  • @14 What does sales figures have to do with people whining about getting a miniscule 10%. My point was be happy with something and people whining about getting the 10% after the sale is done. I guess SONY will not have any sales during that entire week. Besides the sales on either store are weak this week and we may even get a flash sale this coming weekend as well.
  • I'm guessing the people who say the discount goes active a day after the sale ends are over in Europe. For the US the sales change on Tuesdays, so who knows what kinds of sales are going to be on this week, and possibly even a flash sale on the weekend, I dunno. And at the heart of what #13 said, he's kinda right. Use it on a more expensive purchase; it's not a single item 10% purchase, it's 10% off an ENTIRE single purchase, and can be used cross-platform. The only downside of that is possibility of hitting the ten item limit for the online cart using the PS Store website, but seriously? How likely is that to happen. I was going to be getting the DLC pack for AC Rogue, but now that the coupon is for this weekend I'll just wait and get that then if there's nothing else that catches my eye.
  • They are giving 5 free days of PS+ so I get back the days I lost back. This is more than fair. The 10% discount code is a bonus.
  • @18 thank you! They replaced the days which is more than they were obligated to do anyways. They lost business those days too.
  • 5 days 'back' for PS+ when it was down for one day... Not even a full day either as it worked for a while in the morning. And people still bitch. Hilarious. Doesn't matter what Sony did for this slight inconvenience, people would still fucking moan.
  • At least they have offered some sort of reimbursement. They didn't have to, the extension is a fairish return. At the end of the day it was some geeks that ruined the party for everyone and sony didn't have to offer anything. They were the victims, as such so generous in a way.
  • Great, a 5er off a £50 game that I can't resell and could buy in the shops for 30-40. Yes they didn't have to give us anything but the whole point of giving something back is for us to value their humble service and appreciate that they care. Giving 10% off a retail purchase is a complete slap in the face, I laugh at people saying just load up your basket to get more money off, are you really that dumb?? Digital games are more expensive than retail by a long shot and they have zero value. Glad I'm not a naive blind consumer otherwise I'd think getting a £50 game for £45 is an apology for allowing a bunch of kids to cripple a massive multimillion business But ya know, each to their own I guess... I would have valued £1 of credit over a 10% voucher that's only valid on days that there's no sale
  • Valid for three days after a sale? I mean, nice of them but with this timing - why even bother? And for people saying it is stupid to use it on sale items and should rather be spent on expensive purchases: you do know that you can get more than one item during a sale? I could buy a 50 bucks item or 5 for a tenner with the same discount. One is arguably more value for the money.
  • @13 In the sale you would add lots of games to your cart so the discount applies to all of them. You talk of great community but mostly idiots like you defending this Sony cash grab. It is meant to be compensation.
  • Nice to see people still find enough to bitch and moan about when given a few more days of PS+ and offered a discount. Internet never disappoints. Look, if there's nothing you want to buy at the moment, simply don't. If there is, buy it and be happy about getting it for a little less. Problem solved.
  • Resident Evil, Ground Zeroes, and PS plus upgrade for drive club.
  • So I could buy AC Unity for $90 with the discount, or in the local shop for $78 with no discount. Decisions, decisions.
  • @13 - Ironic that you call people morons, while completely missing the point. Sony isn't giving 5 'free' days from benevolence. They offer a paid service, and in the case of PS4 require the service for online play. Had they not offered compensation, there is an excellent chance someone would have initiated a class action lawsuit (the downtime was actually several days, not a few hours). Rightly or wrongly, Sony would almost certainly have had to settle such a suit, and the cost of settlement plus legal fees would have been far more than 5 days of 'free' Plus service. So this is both 'good PR' and 'fiscally responsible' from a business perspective. When you charge people for a service, you are reasonably expected to deliver that service, or to provide compensation for extended down time. But I do agree with you about a certain class of people that otherwise negatively impact a great community....although we may not be thinking of exactly the same individuals as the 'whinge bags'.
  • I don't think they need to apologize as it wasn't their fault. If anything I feel offended by the joke of 10% discount. Simple sorry we'll try better next time will do. If I was to do something like this, I would maybe give code for 50% off a single item in store or something along those lines, though I guess if you buy in bulk 10% might add up too, but still....
  • 10% ??? The store charges 50% more than the actual shops to start with.
  • So, having just joined the PS family this past weekend, I gotta ask for a little clarification on this, what do they mean the code will be distributed via the store? Does that mean that if I'm buying something on the system itself that the discount is automatically applied? I ask because the Playstation site seems to not work when I try to sign in.
  • @32 - It should be sent to the email you used to sign up for PSN. There will be a code, and when you go to the store and add your items to your cart, before checking out add the code into the discount/redeem code tab. I trust you used a valid email when you signed up?
  • @33 alrighty, thank you very much
  • #6, Xbox was only down for one day, compared to PSN being down for 5 or so. Microsoft didn't have to give anything. Granted, Sony doesn't either... It's just really shady how they promise a one time discount, and then make it only last 3 days, like what the fuck is that all about?
  • @35 Clever marketing. Don't forget that Sony is a corporation and all they really want is money. The discount is good news for anyone who was planning on making a purchase. If you didn't then just don't buy anything and stop whining!
  • I moved over to PS4 to get away from Microsofft, who treat customers like bags of money. Now Sony seem to taking tips from them. 10%? This is pretty much a f@#k you and deal with it from them. Games are usually 30% dearer on ps store anyway.
  • @36: That's not clever marketing but another dent in what's left of what you can take Sony's words for. 10% isn't much to begin with, if you go for a low starting amount, it's not much off and if you go for a high amount, you're most likely fine in coughing up the rest. And if the store where it's applicable is at least 20% more expensive than competition, it's worth even less. Making it applicable only in a strongly limited time frame is bad in itself. Doing so in the end of a month after a big sale when most people already spent their budget or the items they're after might have risen in price (more than 10%) is a slap in the face. No one would have bet an eye if they didn't offer any compensation. The 5 days you've lost of a paid service were accompanied by complains and asking for a compensation on that is justified. But the 10% is completely goodwill. Rising expectations and getting praise for this only to reveal that this goodwill is executed in a manner very few can profit from it is (a) poor sports and (b) taking your customers for fools. It's cashing in on good PR and hoping the shit storm won't hurt you too much. And sadly they will get away with it because so many people don't care being little more than sheep and/or will have forgotten in a few days, when the next miniscule reason to whine and cry presents itself. But this shit adds up for some and personally I didn't expected anything else from this or anything else Sony does and says today than a whole lot of hot air and bitter disappointment.
  • WOW im so done with Sony Once i spend my $4 remaning wallet amount I will not give them anything else. All my furure games will be used and if I get a PS4 it will also be used. Learn how to actually please your loyal customers. if u wanna do 10% off to clear up something great but for 3 days only? Sony must be hanging out with Nintendo these days.
  • Whine, wine, wyne "What is this bullshit? Sony allow their system to go down, they should give us something." Sony give away something "What is this bullshit, its not enough" I think that if Sony gave away 6 months of free PS+ and a $50 gift card some of you would still bitch that it is not enough.
  • @40 sadly, the modern gamer seems to be of the opinion that the slightest transgression entitles them to (sometimes unreasonable) compensation. Now, as I said earlier, I'm new to the Playstation group and have only a couple of games and a $10 voucher so for me, this 10% thing will probably allow me to get a decent download game (probably an indie one as they seem to be cheaper). For you complainers, as has been said, Sony doesn't even have to be doing this and honestly, it's more than I've seen Microsoft do when LIVE has had issues.
  • @40 @41 - Again, wrong. You guys are really nice if you routinely are happy paying for a service and having the company not provide it. The 10% is pretty insignificant overall, and really most of the people here are calling it for what it is - a simple sales gimmick. Will be very interesting to see what the sale is this week, but I won't buy something just for the sake of getting 10%. As for Sony not having to do this, they really do. That goes with charging for a service. You kinda do have to provide it if you take the money.
  • Why is almost everyone bitching about? Sony did'nt ask for this hack attack and it was a DDOS atack, so it's unpreventable. You don't have to make use of the 10%. Only if you wanted to buy something anyway, this 10% is gratefull. Only you decides if you will fall in this " Marketing " trap. PSN in my country was not down around Christmas, so for me its 10% discount which I can use.
  • Doesn't really matter to me...I don't have any issues with the downtime...played some single player games and caught up on some tv shows...i hadnt really thought, "hey sony owes me a few days back and I'll take a 10% discount". I mean come on people! You must have something else to do besides sit and cry about a few days lost.
  • @6: Xbox Live also wasn't down for 3 days. It was down for about half of a single day. Anyway, that's kind of a joke. Wish they wouldn't have bothered if it's a code you have to fight over on Twitter and then it's only good for a few days. Also, I bet they stiff me on PS+. I had it on Christmas and I had it when they announced the plan to give people 5 days. But if they're giving it to people who have it right now, that's not me, mine expired. Not surprised, this is fucking Sony after all. Another example of why the PS4 is so far the biggest disappointment of 8th gen gaming. Wish I'd never bought one.
  • Just something for all those people claiming a DDOS is unpreventable ... it is not. There are many techniques like re-routing traffic, IP or cookie validation/comparison, switching to high bandwidth and spoof preventing methods. There are companies focusing on that. Of course not everything is feasible and there are ways to circumvent some detection mechanisms, but there is a reason some companies are hit way harder by an attack than others. MS most likely has a far better detection and emergency response system.
  • lame
  • 10% really isn't that much... Lol
  • wow Sony give us our days membership back and offer a 3 day 10% off code, might be good for digital only purchases but 10% off of a £50 is only £5, that won't increase your "savings" if you buy more. I'll tell you what will though, not buying digitally over priced games! Retail games at most places are between £35-45. This is an awful offer from Sony, whom some believe should offer nothing. Wake up you're paying for an online service, I'd at least expect a bit more stability.
  • @ #49 - you do realise a DDOS attack is basically unpreventable?
  • @50 Fully aware of that fact but why did Microsoft have less down time? Because they're better prepared and equipped.
