Mafia II "Is Not A Sci-Fi Game"

2K has released another Mafia II developer diary to get you primed and ready to enter the gritty underworld of the New York mob in the 1940s and 50s when the game releases in just a few weeks time.

Focusing on everything from the destructible environments to the story and characters, the video offers plenty of rich insight into the game and its murky world, inhabited by all manner of colourful figures and incidental period details.

In short, it's looking pretty damn fine. Any freakin' mook can see that. Check out our latest hands-on preview for more.

Mafia II is out on August 27th in the UK and Europe and August 24th in the US.

  • Looking brilliant can't wait for this.
  • That whole thing alone convinced me to buy it. Looks like its going to be one hell of a game.
  • looks good, can't decide whether to get this on release or wait for it to come down in price.
  • ..and why would anyone think it is Sci-Fi!? o.0
  • Damn!.. I was hoping we could use ray guns..
  • @ 4 I dont get it either
  • @4+6 no one thought assassins creed was sci fi, when they bought it they realised you don't control an assassin, you control a guy controlling his ancestor
  • In the video they talk about the physics engine saying it's not a sci fi so players will know how everyday objects will react...this game looks pretty good I'm looking foward to playing it.
  • comes out on my birthday
  • @9 Happy bday mate
  • @4+6 no one thought assassins creed was sci fi, but when they bought it they realised you don't control the assassin, you control a guy controlling his ancestor
  • @9 24 or 27 august my birthday is on 24 august but i must to wait until 27 august to buy it,because I live in Europe! I can't wait 3 more weeks!
  • Pre-ordered this bad boy loooooong ago. This games going to be the fucking tits.
  • lol im confused why anyone would think its sci-fi, the closest sci-fi has got to anything mob related like this would be the star trek episode on the mob planet XD and at #13 don't say something like that you mean its going to be the bee's knees, the cat's pajamas, ect.
  • Have to say that I'm now rather looking forward to this game. The look and feel of the game is very important and having simple things like pigeons fly away when you get too close adds to that. Liberty City in GTA4 was good, but this looks to take it to the next level. Not being able to destroy parts of the scenery has always annoyed me in past games. But it looks like that won't be a problem in Mafia 2. Even though this looks good it could still fall flat on it's face if the game is boring to play. Fingers crossed it's a great game to look at, and play. Roll on the 27th :)
  • I was immensely disappointed by the demo, so I won't be buying this game. I know its only a demo, but there were no so-called "destructible" environments to speak of in the demo, and the gameplay feels so archaic that its like a game from 2004. Plus, there were tons of performance issues in the demo. I'll still be renting this game, but I don't understand why this is so hyped up. IMO its being completely overrated by everyone.
