Bungie Considering Adding Matchmaking to Destiny Raids

Bungie has responded to widespread calls to add matchmaking to Destiny’s raids, beginning with the Vault of Glass. The studio is “discussing” it.

As it stands, the six person Vault of Glass raid does not support matchmaking, a decision which has made it very difficult for some players to take on Destiny’s most interesting challenge. But that may change in the future.

Speaking in the latest Bungie Weekly Update, community manager "Deej" said, "You don't need to sell us too hard on the value of Matchmaking at Bungie. It's something we helped to pioneer. Yet, we understand its limitations.”

“In the recipe of a Bungie game, Matchmaking has always contributed the ingredient of a team built to play one match of competitive multiplayer. As you've probably witnessed in recent weeks (or years), many of those fresh allies have failed to go the distance together.”

"The Raid was designed for solid teams of killers who have made a commitment to solve a dense and explosive riddle. Most of the raiding parties who have emerged victorious from the Vault of Glass have sworn that one weak link would have doomed their chain.

“There have been other stories, of course. We've heard tell of Guardians who met each other just outside the door that leads into that vault. Strange tales have reached our ears - tales of total strangers who have banded together to see the Raid all the way through to a triumphant finale.”

"Those stories surprise us, but the players of our games always have. The best I can do to answer your question is to let you know that you've been heard. We're having conversations about how Matchmaking might support the more challenging activities in Destiny. It's a start.”

“Keep sounding off about it, and maybe someday some matchmade Fireteam mates will hear you, too."

  • As long as they allow Mic communication then I'm up for this being an option. Getting 6 online at the same time is a huge challenge
  • The main reason I cancelled my pre order because of the absence of matchmaking. I personally wouldn't buy it now anyway even if they addressed it and added it in.
  • How about removing the raid as a weekly event? It is stupid that you get rewards only once per week and you are forced to create 2nd and 3rd character of the same class in order to do it more times hope to get the rewards you want from Bungie's troll reward distribution.
  • I'm not a Destiny player, but I think it was stupid to deny match making. I can understand what they were trying to do (enforce team work, socialising, etc - at least I assume), but they shouldn't take away the match making option to do it. It alienates parts of your playerbase.
  • As a former 360 owner, I have 4 friends in total at the moment. I'm a 27 but without messing about in the forums, I have no chance of getting a raiding party together. If anyone wants to be my friend my PSNid is the same as my username!!
  • Then the other 5 can ***** at the player that hasn't played it yet and doesn't know every single thing lol. They should add this to it though.
  • For something they helped to pioneer, they sure made a lot of stupid, restrictive decisions.
  • For anyone having trouble finding other people: http://www.destinylfg.net/
  • How about letting us trade gear.......
  • Yes, please yes, I'm currently at lvl 28 and it's been a pain finding 5 people at a high enough level who will do this at the same time. It's the only reason I haven't done it yet. @6 I agree, the game should match together people who haven't cleared the raid yet.
  • can they do this for strikes as well while theyre at it? none of my friends are on when i am and 3 of my bounties are for strike bosses.
  • @8 This site below is also for finding people to play with, personally I prefer this name too lol http://thatwizardcamefromthemoon.com/
  • I tried the Raid with 4 friends and 1 random (6 including me) and the 1 random had no headset and it was so difficult ! We didn't complete the RAID, we got up to the bit with the oracles and the shield. If they do matchmaking for these then a few matchmaking options are going to be integral for these RAIDS. 1) Must have headset on 2) Must be able to choose a language 3) Can choose whether you're match with people who have done the raid before, or choose if you want to be matched with players with characters that haven't. The only thing I don't understand is if you want to stop the raid and continue it the next day, don't you have to all join the same fireteam leader? How will that work if you're matched with randoms.
  • If they allowed randoms to play together through matchmaking it could work, you'd just have to scale the difficulty if any drops out So if a team of 6 start, 2 drop out then it should scale so that 4 people are able to do it, then at the next area it could add two new people who are trying to continue the raid from the place
  • @13 If someone hasn't played it before and doesn't communicate, it's probably impossible to beat the raid without getting frustrated. @11 Except for the Weekly Nightfall Strike, strikes do have matchmaking. I have played lots of strikes either alone or just with one friend in my fireteam. If you have to finish bounties just do the strikes on the map, at their base difficulty level. It's mostly either Aksor or Sepkis Prime anyway.
  • @15 Or Phogoth (f@ggot) :P
  • If they do add matchmaking they should make forced game chat for everyone, not unlike some game modes in CoD on Xbox. That is the only way team can really get together and win. I Haven't done Raid yet because of that, but I am not too b othered as there is always something to do. I would much rather have matchmaking for daily/weekly/nightfall challenges tbh. But if they add it to raids first, I guess it's step in the right direction=)
  • I'd be happy with matchmaking for the weekly strike/daily and stuff like the queen's mission's but that just me..
  • I just beat hard mode vault of glass yesterday. Honestly, I think matchmaking for normal vault of glass should be unlocked at level 28. Matchmaking for hard vault of glass should be unlocked at . . . level 30. I'm not trying to be an elitist pretentious fool, but the raid is demanding and experience shows where the majority of players should be to even have a chance of success. I'm not even level 30 yet, and I would not attempt the raid with poorly communicating level 29's. The difference between levels 28, 29 and 30 really is that significant.
  • Well they sure as hell need to do something.
  • I would say matchmaking in Raids will be, in MOST cases, a complete disaster. However it should still be included as everyone has paid the same price for Destiny (shop/regional variations notwithstanding) and should get the opportunity to experience the full game. Plus it's hard enough for a lot of gamers to organise a party of six now, imagine what it will be like in December and beyond when 2/3 of the current players will have moved on to other games. Bungie will definitely have to add some restrictions though, some good idea in this thread, to preserve the quality of Raids as much as possible especially if the leaks are true and future raids start at level 28. Btw for those that haven't managed to get a party together yet all six players dont have to be friends, as long as each player is friends with one other you should be good to go.
  • #21 is right, when we tried the RAID it was 2 of my friends, then 2 friends of friends and we pulled one random guy from the tower. It was a nightmare though because it was all our 1st times doing the RAID and we didn't watch any walkthroughs.. but we figured out relatively quickly what to do throughout. The reason it was a nightmare though was because the random had no headset. It was like carrying one player on your back, then after a few failed attempts at the oracle bit with the shield, the random dropped out, we were left with 5 of us, and there was no way we were going to get past it with just 5 of us. We were only level 27-28's. I loved what I did of the RAID though, it was so much fun and everytime we progressed through it a bit further, it felt like a massive triumph. I really want to get a group of 5 players who can put an hour or two into the RAID over the week and complete it because it was so much fun & it definitely required massive teamwork and communication. It wasn't until after the RAID where I could understand why Bungie decided you need to do it with 6 friends or acquaintances - I think it would be a total disaster with 6 randoms together, especially if some do not have a headset and it's there 1st ever time doing the Raid.
  • Too late, traded in a few days ago. Good luck to all those still playing. Destiny taught me one good thing though, and that is to never pre-order games again.
  • Maybe release a raid that doesn't require quite as much communication. I mean there will be some people who don't use a mic.
  • @#24 - That would just be no different to going through the Strike Playlist, but with 6 players instead. It defeats the point of the RAIDs if they were to do that.
  • The point is everybody isn't going to use a mic though. So if you leave it as is and they allow matchmaking then good luck.
  • I just can't imagine or deem it to be possible without a massive amount of stress, that it would work without communicating. I'd like to see 6 decent skilled players who haven't done the RAID yet try it without mics. I don't think it would be possible to do. I thought "surely, you'd be able to do the RAID without mics" .. but after trying it I don't think it'd be possible.
  • That's why I said if they are going to do this then they need to alter something. You don't have to take away communication completely and turn it into something else to go easier on it though. I'm guessing there will be more raids added in the future.
  • I've done it only once, and with randoms at the entrance, BUT we all speak the same language and had headset on, I don't think matchmaking will do any good, ppl will be able to get in but won't manage to do nothing inside... Maybe if the make another shorter and simpler raid, with lower dificulty (and lower rewards) ppl can matchmake into and manage to complete it, the vault is just impossible with randoms
  • noooo that is the worst idea ever! no matchmaking in raids tht would Be horseshit
  • I'm just going to finish a few trophies and then shelf this game while I wait for them to make the raids easy-mode. Don't worry guys, it will happen!
  • Headset mandatory. Maybe it will function. People who have not completed the raid have no idea what the fuck their talking about. The raid is not a cake walk. It becomes rudimentary after you have completed it multiple times with the same group of people and lock down your roles.
  • @3 So basically you want to max out every character as fast as possible and have the best gear available right away? You are a sad gamer. Its one week so what...go outside and stop crying.
  • Should have been a matchmaking option to begin with.
  • So because I don't have 6 friends who I play ps4 with religiously or have ps4 to begin with I must troll forums to find players who on the very slim chance will be on at the same time as me to attempt a raid? That is a big fuck you to me by bungie! I paid the same money as everyone else and I want to be able to at least try the raid without all the bullshit requirements, playing with friends is better I do agree but we are not all kids at school or jobless and have endless amount of time.
  • Matchmaking for raids and weekly strikes would be great! I am a level 29 Warlock and am struggling to find full teams of people on forums and such to do these. If the raid is supposedly the best part of the game, why make it so damn difficult to get a match going? Frustrating.
  • why wasn't matchmaking a requirement?
  • I like how he says they pioneered match making but yet it still was not a good idea to put there pioneered match making in the game . This reminds me of metro 2033 redux , deepsilver forgot to put a control scheme page in the options menu , so nobody can figure out how to equip and use throwing knives . What is wrong with developers now days ? answer : They don't play video games , one would think this would be a requirement to get the job in the first place .
  • if there going to make it do matchmaking, have the option to make your lobby private so randomers cant going if a team mate gets dc or on bosses and get a reward for the work your team has put in and allow us to adjust the in game volume you cant hear anyone why using the in game chat and in a gun fight if u don't have an adjustable mic
  • Please do add matchmaking to the raid(s) and the nightfall strikes. I've done the raid twice now, both times with different random people I've never played since with. This is stupid and matchmaking would be great. At least on normal the raid honestly isn't that hard as long as everyone is above level 25. We even got through the Templar fight without anyone dying at any point. We screwed up with the labyrinth but we still got through two thirds of the raid without anyone dying. Minimal communication, just barely explaining what people should do and occasionally someone yelling "I need help on this side". Matchmaking would take out the stupid part of the raid which is looking someone up from the internet and waiting for people to invite more people on their friends list to even start the raid. IMO Bungie should definitely add matchmaking to end game content ASAP. Also, I'm not a big fan of the loot restrictions. I can see why they don't want people to just grind out the best gear in short time periods but restricting ascendant materials and maybe sparrows/ships/class items? They don't affect gameplay and they probably should be made available as a reward on every raid run.
  • Yes! Please do Bungie!
  • @33 After defeating the raid multiple times and haven't got any raid gear or atheon's epilogue, yes I'm sad. Yet, you are just another brainless fanboy that probably hasn't even attempt VOG. If you had, you wouldn't make this ridiculous comment.
  • Yes because most of us can't find that many people for these things. Everything should feature matchmaking and have a choice to disallow it if you want your own group. That's a pretty easy feature to add.
  • there is a lot of issues that need to be addressed if they bring matchmaking to VoG. I think the second it goes live there is going to be again A LOT of griefing about how bad it is. fix this and that. and just more whines revolving around the matchmaking. A lot of people dont even use mics or talk. and those people who just run for chest and screw others over because of despawning. sure they could probably fix that but well see.
