GDC 2014: More Hours Played on PlayStation 3 Per Week Than Any Other Console, Says Sony

Sony says that PlayStation 3 owners spend more hours playing games per week than any other console.

The claim was made at the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco today, in a session about free-to-play games - headed by Sony’s Sarah Thomson.

Part of Sony’s third-party relations team, Thomson said that in addition to PS3 being the most played console per week, PlayStation users are also the “most engaged consumers who spend the most money.”

Thomson also pointed to the PlayStation 3’s 80 million unit install base as evidence of the console’s popularity.

  • Netflix GOTY Jk lol
  • You're probably right. I have a PS4 and most of the time I use it for Netflix. Sad but true.
  • @1 you're actually probably right. It's due to Netflix.
  • I just want to know what the " the most played console per week" means. It begs to ask, does this also count sitting on the dash (or in that case it auto turning on to download and install stuff with plus) or if its including any video apps or not. Please Sony, don't follow the MS route of stats that make no sense like "Most shipped consoles".
  • With the deals and free games they're throwing at us it's hardly surprising. Only hardcore xbox fans would play there all the time...
  • Sony is talking about single player and multi player not netflix , my question is are they finally realizing how big there fan base is and how devoted we are ? And if Sony wants to keep its fan base all they have to do is stop screwing us out of platinums (metalgear V ground zeroes ) and stop sitting on your hands while M$ buys exclusive rites to AAA game titles , and learn how to keep the talent on your development team ..
  • @4 your prolly right and its the hrs logged in from bootup. It should be actual gamming time not netflix and "the" youtube. Darksouls II defiantly has me busy on PS3 since its launch. I haven't touched my 360 for awhile now. I don't have Ps+ but I'm sure that has many playing all the time why the hell wouldn't you with that library of games. Whats Xbox have? yea? nothing.
  • No surprise to me with all the deals and free games Sony offers my PS3 is on almost all day. I just bought GTA IV from the Spring Fever Sale and I can't wait to start it :) On top of that I got Tomb Raider with PS+ so yeah my PS3 is always busy :)
  • i think it's hard stop to play on PS3,it's amazing console and PS+ help, cause they give for free a very good game, like Borderl 2,bioshock infinite, metro last light, tomb raider..the best place for game now are PS3,then PS4.
  • @6 Sorry to say but trophy hunters (or people who care if a game has a platinum) is probably less than 10%. Yes your voice can be heard but probably not very loud sadly. So i honestly wouldn't act like no-platinums in games is what is hurting Sony lol
  • Holding out on going next gen FTW!
  • Because PS4 has what? 3 games out now?
  • Agreed with the Netflix comments. Most people on my friends list just use that instead of playing games.
  • How are they measuring how "engaged" I am? I'd love to hear about their definition of that statistic.
  • i spend 4 hours at least daily on the PS3 ^_^ Long Live Game
  • I think there would be more accurate data if Sony actually allowed gaming hours to be tracked.
  • @10 Ten percent is generous. I'd say less than one. Spend the most money? Considering how bad digital pricing is and how rare decent sales are you may as well add "most gullible" to that. (Yes I know the Store has had some good sales lately but that's only lately, it doesn't make up for years of horrible pricing)
  • I believe it. I've personally spent over $1200 bucks on PSN since I got my PS3 when MGS4 released. I have over 150 games on PS3 as well
  • @12 you may have been thumbed down for speaking ill of the PS4 but actually I thumbed up cos your right, I will probably get thumbed down as well for this but I haven't any intention of buying a PS4 until later this year because there is just no point, the cost is unreal for a machine that every game for it so far has been re-releases of PS3 games like Tomb Raider which only really appeals to hardcore trophy hunters who like doubled up lists for double platinums, but as far as I can see the only attraction to the PS4 is for the exclusive games like Killzone: Shadow Fall and Infamous: Second Son.
  • More good news for Sony. I hope if MS learns nothing else from this generation (even if they end up doing better, later) is that gamers aren't stupid, and that they could have done MUCH better with the One if they simply hadn't forced us to buy a Kinect most of us really, really... REALLY (promise) didn't want.
  • @19 yeah, I wasn't speaking bad about it. Just stating a fact in relation to the article :) "Sony says that PlayStation 3 owners spend more hours playing games per week than any other console." It's true, there's more games, more things to do on PS3 than there is the PS4..... RIGHT NOW. This isn't to say it will change once they get more games built for the system and current gen. Not sure why people are downvoting for a fact.
