Evolve Was Inspired by Cabela's Big Game Hunter

For the uninitiated, Evolve is the 4v1 shooter from the team behind Left 4 Dead, pitting four well-equipped hunters against a fearsome and powerful monster. It's a game that inspired by movies like Predator and Aliens, and also video games like... Cabela's Big Game Hunter.
"There's a couple of little stories, and different guys say different things, but one of them is that really really long ago, before the [Turtle Rock] team was even working on Counter-Strike, they used to play Cabela's Big Game Hunter," Producer Denby Grace told PST. "Chris (Ashton, Turtle Rock co-founder) says he was bored of shooting deers that did nothing when you shot them. They were just grazing on the grass, and it was just really uninspiring. He thought, wouldn't it be cool to hunt this actual difficult thing to hunt? That would be cool!"
Of course, Turtle Rock also found inspiration closer to home, looking at Left 4 Dead's frightening infected Tank, which isn't a million miles away from Evolve's rock-hurling monster, Goliath.
"Imagine having to track this thing down and that was part of the game, actually tracking it; and then catching it as well is pretty hardcore," Denby continued. "That was one story that Chris told me over beers once, and it really came back up after Left 4 Dead when the guys were playing the Tank battles in the game, with that co-operative play against a much bigger and stronger opponent, which became prevalent. That's where the guys just kind of clicked and thought “this is actually really good fun.” And playing against a human opponent as well, is even more fun."
Evolve is a lot of fun. We know because we played it, a lot. You can read all about it in our extensive and in-depth hands-on preview here. You'll also be able to find out more in our full and unedited interview soon. Evolve is out in autumn 2014 for PS4 and Xbox One.
