The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim has sold a whopping 20 million units, Bethesda has announced.

The publisher revealed the news via a press release overnight, but failed to clarify whether that number refers to units sold to customers or to retail. Regardless, it’s the best-selling title in the series.

Indeed, such is the RPG’s success that Wikipedia has it as the 20th best-selling game of all time, sandwiched between Nintendo giants Brain Age and Super Mario World. On the DS, Brain Age sold 20 million units, while Super Mario World for the SNES sold 20.6 million.

Later this year, a subscription MMO entry to the series is due to hit PS4, Xbox One and PC. Bethesda will be hoping The Elder Scrols Online can build on Skyrim's success.

  • nice.great game.they wil not get that manny on Elder Scrolls online tho
  • Pity that Skyrim was broken for PS3 users at release. These statistical millions of Skyrim customers are plumbing into and fuelling the business model for ESO. Are people seriously going to pay monthly to play Online Morrowind? A worrying time for Bethesda shareholders indeed who probably don't understand the seemingly fickle game-playing community who themselves can see clearly how the mighty are going to fall.
  • Not gonna buy TES Online. MMO are a neverending waste of time.
  • Lots of fun, though hopefully they put some of this cash towards making sure that the next Fallout game doesn't freeze, lag and turn into something almost unplayable when you try to do everything and the dlc.
  • @4 Cash isn't the issue when Bethesda employees code about as well as 5-year olds who have never seen a computer before.
  • Great just bought the legendary edition cant wait to start playing again, after I finish dark souls ofc jajaja oops i ment hahahaha!
  • One of the best games I ever played. I was hoping they were not going online, but like most companies they do. I skip the online version and wait for un Elder Scroll 6, because I like to play these kind of games offline. The only bad thing about Skyrim was the annoying freezing a lott of time.
  • @2 Having played Skyrim again recently I have discovered a few things in the options that make the game run smoother. Try turning off 'save after travelling'.I do congratulate Bethesda on 20 million on such a great game (except for the bugs but the game WAS at least playable). I do still prefer Oblivion because it was more difficult and to me unless on expert/legendary Skyrim was ridiculously easy.
  • I would love to see this on PS4 .
