Sony Outlines PlayStation 4 Functionality for Non-PS Plus Subs
Written Tuesday, June 18, 2013 By Lee Bradley

It’s becoming a little clearer as to what non-PS Plus subscribers will be allowed access to on PlayStation 4.

During E3 Sony announced that players will need to subscribe to PS Plus in order to play multiplayer titles on the next-gen console.

Yet that isn’t entirely true, as some online multiplayer free-to-play games on the system will not require a PS Plus subscription.

Furthermore, some PS3 functionality currently restricted to PS Plus subs will become free to everyone on PS4.

Let’s start with the games. While it will be necessary to subscribe to PS Plus in order to play the multiplayer element of most games on PS4, the same does not apply to free-to-play titles.

Ultimately, says Sony, that decision is down to publishers.

"As far as free-to-play games are concerned, it's a publisher's decision whether they put it inside or outside of the PlayStation Plus requirements," SCE Worldwide Studios President Shuhei Yoshida told Polygon.

Blacklight: Retribution, Warframe, DC Universe Online and PlanetSide 2 will not require a PS Plus subscription, it has been confirmed.

Beyond that, SCEE UK & Ireland MD Fergal Gara has said that features like auto-update, which is currently available only on PS3 to PS Plus subs, will become available to all on PS4.

That’s in addition to the console’s “social features” - which presumably relates to, among other things, the much called for cross-game chat feature.

“If you choose not to subscribe we are still gating relatively little in many senses, so access to online catch-up TV and online movie services sit outside of the gate, for example,” Gara told VideoGamer.

“The social features of PS4 and PS4 games sit out of the subscription service, things like auto-updates on PS4 sit outside of PlayStation Plus, so we’re trying to be as balanced and as fair as we possibly can.”

A PlayStation Plus subscription applies across PS3, PS4 and Vita, and costs £39.99/$49.99 for a one-year subscription and £11.99/$17.99 for a 90-day subscription. The PlayStation 4 is out “this holiday” and will cost £349/$399.

Literally nobody should be complaining. The amount of games sony give away with Ps Plus make it more than worth the price! Sometimes you get games that you wouldn't usually play and end up enjoying them!

Been a member of the plus from day 1,

The discounts; Free games; acces to beta versions; exclusive items; free avatars and backgrounds; ...

And this all for 3 systems....

All these things made me buy more than 2500 items in the store allready and if you would count the normal price compared to the discounted price, I can surely say it saved me a couple of €1000 GO SONY; GO PS4; GAME...SET...MATCH

One more thing 1 am wishing for... Trophies for the older/all games (Imagine FF7 with trophies...)

But £350 is $550 and €399 is $535. Then for plus £39.99 is $62.

Yes shipping costs much,

Its always been like this and will never change.

Think of it in this way: Construction costs are lower in the homeland. Probaly the reason why the other console costs more...

@8 Shipping costs peanuts, the economies of scale really matter here, it's about $7,000 to move a shipping container anywhere in the world (private single container rate, Sony/Microsoft will be moving hundreds on a contract, so another saving there), and you can fit about 1-2,000 consoles in a container.

And the other console, as you put it, costs more because it's bundled with Kinect, and because they think they can get away with charging more.

Plus is awesome and I intend to own all three of Sony's systems at some point, only got PS3 for now, so having Plus span all three makes an already worth it premium service all the better.

As an XBL Gold member who will not be getting an XBONE, I've been following a lot of what Sony is doing now. On Xbox 360 you have to subscribe to even download free to play games or just to watch Netflix. Really wish I had been chasing Trophies all this time instead of Achievements...

@7 - there are also Sales Taxes to take in to account. 20% of the UK price will be VAT, so the actual console cost will be nearer £291 + VAT, which works out at $454 (so still slightly more expensive).

When I heard that PS+ was needed for standard multiplayer my heart sank, it was simply sony following microsofts anti-consumer lead & dropping one of their biggest selling points straight out of the gate, spoiling an otherwise perfect E3... I was bummed, but then shuhei yoshida stated that F2P multiplayer would not need PS+ subscription which I think is a very smart move (planetside 2 & blacklight retribution %100 free? yes please). Now, I'm very glad to hear that cross chat/video sharing is not behind a PS+ paywall, which I expected, thank god. I never subscribed to plus on principal because I didn't want the XBLA model forced onto us playstation gamers for PS4 (and I owned pretty much all games they offered already). Sure it's worth the price now, but I'm worried that the good value PS+ offers at the moment will diminish as everyone will start subscribing for MP, so basically they'll not need to entice us as much with free full games. Really I believe that they should've locked cross chat/vid sharing to PS+ and kept multiplayer free, after all isn't a PS4 just a souped up PC? MP on PC is free! I'm going to hold off a PS+ sub for a few months and see what value it really offers next-gen & stick to my singleplayer & free-to-play games on PS4, & my PS3 for battlefield / call of duty. Damn you Bill Gates for setting the standard in greed forcing others to follow your lead

PSN+ is a awesome service, and let Xbox Live way behind in terms of advantages.
I have both PS3 and Xbox 360, used to play 360 a lot more than my PS3.
But now Sony will have my exclusivity, because they owned M$ big time.
They proved they are friends of their consumers, and will have my friendship too.

@20 As much as I hate to admit it you have to face the fact that XBL has been able to far exceed PSN in capability solely on the fact that there customers pay for it and we dont. Now what infuriates me to no end with XBL is that they double dip. If im paying $60 a year for XBL why the hell do I haveto see advertisements scattered all over my live wall?

We knew free MP was going to die someday and who knows you may be right, for PS5 it might be PS+ with no free games at all but we'll just have to wait and see.

As someone who has paid for XBL Gold for the past six years I've got no problem whatsoever with being forced to continue PS Plus in order to game online on PS4, as it stands just with the Instant Game Collection alone it represents excellent value for money.

Sony have also promised to plow the additional income back into the service which I sincerely hope will see improvements to syncing (background please)and update speed, both of which are currently far better on XBL Imo.

Like they said, you already get Drive Club for free which is about £39 retail (or £49 digital LOL for some reason digital games cost more on launch day) and that alone will cover the COST of your 1 year subscription... THEN comes the FREE games every month for PS4/PS3/PSVita so if you got all three gaming devices, you're in for a feast.

WHAT I WANT for PS4 is the ability to delete games you don't want in your virtual shelf. Even if it means you only get the option to purge unwanted games quarterly/semester or heck even once a year, just give us the chance to spring clean...

As more people join they'll do less incentives overtime, think like how popular brand foods serving sizes cut cost.

That's if they're game though.

On topic, good to know all of this, might end up only being sony exclusives needed + service, as it may deter people from playing their games online...more online, more chances to push out dlc, more interactivity with customers...unless the publishers get a cut or some deal and we, the consumer get supposedly better online games when they're psn+ enabled.

I don't have a major issue with this, $50/yr is no big deal IF it means no more online passes (which it shouldn't, as now we are paying to play online), and IF the freebies going forward aren't going to be feature stripped 'demos'.

This isn't a complaint, but I do find it concerning that Drive Club is limited features - does that mean only part of the game? no trophies?

I would hate to see Plus offerings become the new stardard of demo.

@2 I can complain all I want cuz this is kind of a deal breaker for me.
I can't buy PS+ not because I can't afford it but because I don't have an international credit card. I don't have any means to buy the subscription either. Where I live there are no prepaid PSN cards to buy stuff online and there even isn't a PSN store for my country.
Which means I have to LIE about my nationality and make a foreign PSN account and then find a way to buy the PSN cards from that country just so I can play multiplayer on the PS4!

Sounds like I'm getting screwed up the bum. All the fancy social features like the share button are free to use even though they're what's causing move from free to play online to pay to play online?

How about multiplayer stays free like it is on PS3 and people who want to use the Share button are required to subscribe to Plus?

@2: I can complain because PS+ doesn't give away anything, it lets you rent stuff. It lets you rent old as hell stuff I either already played or never want to play. I have never been a subscriber on PS3 because it's been a terrible value. Now they're making it an even worse value by removing features and at the same time forcing us to buy into it if we want to enjoy all the features of games we already paid $60 for. The only reason this isn't the biggest dick move a console manufacturer is pulling in the 8th gen is because Microsoft completely blotched the Xbox One. But this is still a pretty massive dick move for Sony to pull.

On top of that, all people like you have done for the lifespan of the PS3 is talk about how shit it was that Microsoft is doing it. But now that it's Sony, nobody has any right to complain? Fuck that, it's still a dick move and I'm going to complain about it.

@38 That's funny because you'll also have to pay a subscription on the Xbox to play online, and without it more features are blocked. Plus, they won't be giving away many, if any, games and whatnot. But if you're referring to getting a Wii U instead, then have fun I guess.

@40 ImonaBadTrip, how can you be impressed/unimpressed by something you haven't even gotten your hands on? That's like saying you don't like the way a car handles without ever driving it.

I think you're going to get burned going to MS for multiplayer. Look, MS is NOT friendly. This is the company that punishes players for upgrading their HDD, and that's just one example:

MS: "Oh, you don't have enough space on this factory installed 4GB HDD? Want to upgrade to 500GB? WHAT?! You did it yourself with a $60 dollar HDD?! NO, NO, NO!" [bans console from Xbox Live] "You should have gone through us! We would have sold you a 500GB console for a mere $400! Well, yes, you would have saved $360 dollars but that's the point! With Microsoft, you can't save 360! Get it? 360? It's a joke we made up. It's almost as funny as the 4GB HDD which you paid $250 for! Ha ha ha!"

Remember when Xbox 360 came out? Every one of the Day 1 consoles released was dead within a year from heat issues. MS offered free replacements of ALL 360's released within the first year because they knew their product was garbage. They didn't care about the customers when they intentionally promoted a flawed product; they just wanted to get the jump on Sony. It worked - Xbox 360 has the lion's share of the console market this generation - but your online multiplayer switch to Xbox will mean nothing if your console doesn't function.

Oh, and Sony's Day 1 PS3 consoles (20GB and 60GB) sell for as much now as new consoles: $400. That's after being out for six years. You won't find that kind of love and attention to detail with MS.

@41 not just the online but the lineup of exclusives MS has right now. I'll probably get a ps4 just might be until 2015. The only game sony has that i'm interested in is Beyond two souls and that's for ps3 so other then that theres really no need to rush into buying a ps4. Sony didn't have as many faulty consoles but there 60gb ylod (happened to me) a good amount of people that's why they had to stop making it and went to just 80gb. the reason they sell for that much is that sony has taken away all the features that it launched with to keep the price down. The ps3 has taken more away since launch then it has added and its kind of disappointing.

I've paid for xbox live for over 4 years, had a 360 a longer than that..

I got my ps3 back in December, and with the disaster that was E3. I am now starting to play it. Bought PS+ $50, no tax? I played through Machinarium and The Cave already. Started Uncharted 3, and downloading Saints Row the third.. Basically got my money back already :)

I'm looking forward to getting a PS4
Between all the free games I just got, and Ni no Kuni coming in the mail, I doubt I will be touching my 360 very much :) (except for rockband :P)

From the number of posts you put on this website I can see that you spend more time in posting than in playing.

Yes with plus you rent the game, whats the problem with that. People that like to have a game forever mostly buy the disk of the game.

Also think of this once: When you get all trophys of any not disk based game, how much time do you spend with it afterwards. Maybe one or 2 games I have grabbed back at after I got all trophies and than it was mostly cause MP was so fun

Haven't you seen how much games in the last years have jumped to sony

And don't give me any crap that you want to play that games from day one. There are just to much games to play them all fully and completely till the end. We can wait. In the end we also got games like Mass effect, dead rising2,
coming up far cry and rayman legends

First to get this out of the way...
PS1 since 97 and PS2 since 02 owner.. bought a PS3.. love it.. but bought a 360 also.. and I kinda switched, and started buying all my non exclusives for 360... all because of the achievment system over the trophy system...
Someone already mentioned it tho.. A service I pay for live gold, litters my screens with fucking advertisments, becuz xbox/M$ are money grubbing greedy whores who don't give 2 shits about the consumer, just our money... Now are ruining the next system.. and I'm coming back ppl.. back to the company that raised me into adulthood, Sony... PS4.. and I couldn't be happier.. I only watch Netflix on PS3.. my question is this.. does Netflix fall in or out of the PS+ paywall? Tho I guess it doesn't matter cuz for cheaper then what I pay for live, i know i'll get ps+ so no big deal i suppose.

Imonabadtrip... you stuck with ps3 solely for its free online.. yet since ps4 is charging for online your moving to xbone? You do realize live is more expensive then ps+ right? Might wanna get all your facts right before just spouting off nonsense... That or I just caught you your either trollin or a M$ employee... your logic makes no sense... If your entire decision was based on free online, you might as well stick with the cheaper one no? Well you did mention games,, at least you didn't mention the day one dlc laden Killer Instinct demo, err clone.. or whatever the hell it is.. Fuck M$... period...

Sony offers free games and goodies on psplus now because is something not everyone uses so they try to get people to buy the subscription.
But if psplus becomes the standard and everyone has it because they want to play online and from the other side for xbox ofcourse you have to pay then the 2 consoles will get in even ground.
I very much doubt that sony after this new reality will give good free games as it does now. It will probably give some very low profile games that not many will be interested in but it wont matter because everyone will buy the psplus for the online play and not the games.
For example i dont use psplus now because i m not interested in the free games. But i will have to get the psplus on ps4 nomatter the free games because i want to play online.
So in conclusion people that say that they dont mind paying for psplus because its so much better than xbox live are wrong. Sony will not have incentive to keep it better in the future if everyone cashes in anyway
