E3 2013: PS4 is Region Free, Features Upgradeable Hard Drive
Written Tuesday, June 11, 2013 By Lee Bradley

PlayStation 4 is Region Free and its 500GB hard drive can be upgraded, Sony has confirmed.

The confirmation comes via Sony Worldwide Studios boss Shuhei Yoshida, who took to Twitter following last night’s press conference.

“Yes, PS4 is region free,” tweeted the Sony suit, followed by, “And yes, PS4’s HDD is upgradeable like PS3 <3”

The latter snippet of info means that you can use third-party hard drives to increase the size of your storage.

Once the system is out we’ll try and bring you a guide to exactly how to do this. On PS3 it can be quite daunting if you don’t know what you’re doing.

The PS4 launches "this holiday" for $399 in the US, €399 in Europe and £349 in the UK.

This just keeps getting sweeter! I remember when I plopped a 320GB into my old phat 60GB for £55... and sold my 360 Arcade because M$ wanted £120 for 120GB! Who's looking at 4GB drives right now? ;)

Sony wins!

PS Plus will be required to play online, but for people that already reap the benefits of PS Plus won't have any issues with that.

I switched fully in August. Had my ps3 since launch but didn't use it much. PS4 looks amazing.. Not just the console, but the exclusives. I have to admit, I loved the look of Dead Rising 3... But that was all for Xbox One... Final Fantasy XV and Kingdom Hearts 3 alone make this a must have...
Day one for me, but thanks to M$ this will be the only time since I was about 7 I haven't got each console at launch. Thats if I even consider getting the new Xbox..
My Wii U is better than the Xbox one

Well this just gets better and better. I haven't been this impressed by a new console since the Wii with its wacky ideas.

What's clear is that after making some big mistakes at the beginning with the PS3, Sony have learned from it and put together one sweet gaming console.
That's right Gaming Console. Sony does what Microsoft don't in a massive way.
It won't be a day one purchase but I will be going for this one day. Hopefully they'll find a way to get PS3 discs and downloads working on it eventually.

I'm glad it's region free, that way if I pre-order one (I am so tempted, never had a console day 1), I will import it from the USA. $399 = £256, charging us £349 over here is a disgrace.

Other than that I can't see one advantage the Xbone has over PS4. Already paid up for PS+ for the next 2 years so no problems with online either.

@11 Watch out for import duties mate; customs duty is on average 5-9%, then there's import VAT at 17.5%. You should call HMRC to find out what the exact customs duty is for the PS4, based on 7% average you'll save £30 in total, but for some goods they add on 85%!!!

If you don't pay these PRIOR to your console arriving in the UK it could end up very, very expensive (holding fees etc), and very late (like 2014) before you actually get to play it. For £30 I'd rather just get it from a UK retailer and be able to get a replacement if it bricks (first batches are always a bit risky!).

Best of luck! :)

Any word on 2.5 or 3.5m? Id imagine given size its 2.5 but I was really hoping for 3.5 since im fillinga 1tb in my ps3 and if they went with 3.5 I could drop upwards of 3tb in a ps4.

350 quid is a bargain. and will still have enough coin to buy a game or 2. M$ has well and truly shot themselves in the foot this time. and this is coming from someone who own both the ps3 and xbox 360 and enjoy what both have to offer.

Just like #10 said, I too won't be getting this day one, but I am getting it one day. I've invested too much in my PS3 library that I can't walk away from it just yet. There's even games I have that are still sealed, I hope to get through almost all my games before I make the switch.

welcome to all the xbox defectors, good to have you on board, ive pre ordered now from amazon im so excited, i went to bed thinking Sony had that much of an easy job at screwing M$ they would somehow blow it, yet quite thecontrary has happened, PS4 has blown M$ away and exceeded my own expectations, i.e changeable HDD, cracking price, multi region i mean its almost too good to be true, thank you Sony!!!

I love the idea of region free, but i have to see before I can believe. I would love to be able play my region 2 dvd's on my American PS4. I have bought "region free dvd players" before and it's a bunch of crap and can't play them. But this would be amazing and my number reason for getting it day 1, along with being able to buy games for my brother in Denmark.

I would like to take this moment to apologise to the PlayStation community, for I wavered in my faith in what Sony can do as a company for gamers.

My many years with the original PlayStation and the PlayStation 2 should have been enough to show me the way, but having owned the PlayStation 3 day one, I lost interest in it because of the lack of games I found interesting. And especially since friends were talking about "this game, and that game" over on the green side. I cracked. I purchased the Xbox 360. And I stayed there. And it wasn't until just after Christmas, I traded in my PS3.

Having seen what I have though at this year's E3, it has woken me up to the fact that Sony does indeed know what it is doing after all - and it isn't just the E3 showing that I'm talking about, the last year or so, for me, is evidence, and had me second guessing my decision.

I again, would just like to say sorry, to you, the community, to the PlayStation 3 console I traded in, and Sony, for doubting. Please accept back a lost child with open arms.

We welcome you back with open arms :D My mum spent lal her £2 coins on an Xbox 360 - £2 which she had been saving up for a long time - and the only game I ever bought for it was Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands. Than my friend gave me Kameo (Probably the only decent exclusive, no offensive M$)
I'm regretting the POP purchase now. All those achievements could've been leading towards a nice plat on my profile. Ah well, it was a fun game anyway.
As for Nintendo, I love their games. They are amazing, especially Zelda. If I manage to afford it, I will buy a Wii U. But for the moment;

PS4 for the future!

@38 If you live in the UK, as I do, then you can buy American games and they will play on your UK console. The same goes for the other way around, and also for Japanese games, but you'll obviously need to be able to understand Japanese to be able to fully enjoy playing them :)

@40 yes i live in the uk too, but dnt most if not all american games come out in the u.k anyway? It sounds a cool addition but its not really a big deal when everything these days are region locked? Every dvd i have ever had is region locked correct? it just gets sold in this country. Who would buy things from america instead and what benefit would it be? After customs slaps it tax on it and transportation surely it will be more expensive than just buying it in the u.k?

So first day on this. Only disappointment I have is the PS Plus requirement, so gone are the days of a "free" PlayStation Network but I knew it was bound to happen the moment Sony started pushing PS Plus subscriptions across all their PlayStation product line. But with a $100 cheaper (than XBox One) pricetag, no always-on requirement, and lax used-games mentality, Sony is getting my $$ this Xmas :)

So long as the DLC is region free, that's been the problem PS3 has suffered, merge the PSN stores and do away with the regionalisation of content.

I had a nosy for the import rates on games consoles, as far as I can see there's no import duty rate for them, just VAT at 20% for the UK, then there's the £8 or more duty collection fee the carrier charges (some couriers charge £16-25 or more!).

Its funny how xbox owners keep bringing up when PSN was hacked. Either these ppl are new to their xbox or just plain traumatized by what they saw at E3, because xbox live HAS been hacked before PSN and since.

Every internet capable device will get hacked at some point.

Then there are some that are going with "now they have to be a Plus member to play multiplayer"...NEWS FLASH! XBLive was that way already, just PS users will be paying less than XBLive.

Exclusive games DOES NOT apply to any argument they try to make. Certainly couldn't play a Mario game in a SEGA Genesis could ya...can you xbox users play World of Warcraft?..No?...neither can PS users...why aren't you bitching about that? (And no I do not play WoW, nor will I ever, I am a console player)

Sorry for not being on topic.

@42 some games used to be region exclusives, like most Japanese games are region locked over there, and in some countries like Australia, some games get banned from retail so now, the Aussies can import games that are banned. I hope that helps

@45 I'm not a fanboy of any console, but Xbox live has never been hacked, no one has breached microsofts security. The hackings you may have heard of were phishing scams or people claiming to have hacked into Microsoft but were found out to have posted false documents. If you can provide any official prove that it has been hacked, post a link. I could be wrong but to my knowledge its never been hacked.

Exclusive games are also a major selling point for consoles and pc. If there were no exclusives there would be no point in multiple consoles.

@46 ah i see so it is more of benefit to people like asutralians, well thats cool at least they can play all games now.
And i agree that exclusives were the only point of different consoles. But with this upcoming gen there are mannnnnnnnnnnnny reasons for multiple consoles. Its get fucked by anti consumer evil MS, or buy the seemingly pro consumer PS4.

@46 I also read about those scams you speak of. The fact that you or I weren't affected by the "hacks" (assuming you weren't) doesn't make it like it never happened. Only thing that i was affected by was not being able to play unauthorized credit card charges happened to me (again, assuming same with you).
If you want a link, use the same as I used...Google. There you can find a number of articles backing up what we both say.
All I'm saying is don't be naive to think it hasn't happened. Better yet believe what you want. Like I said before internet capable devices always get hacked at some point.

Now back to exclusive games, if one system has (pick your exclusive game) and the other has (pick your exclusive game) does not make one system better than the other. What makes a system better than the other is the hardware...and policies put in place by each system. Alot of people play multiplatform games, i.e. CoD, BF, Madden. I'm not saying exclusive games are bad. It just doesn't make sense to try to claim exclusive games as an argument for which is a better system.

@46 XBL has never been successfully hacked en masse, but they have had numerous down periods which they have always labelled as "temporary issues" and never given any more information which one could legitimately assume are due to security. However, their XBone restrictions could make them Target Of The Decade.

My issue with XBL is Microsoft's attitude to fixing exploits/mods; there's a whole industry created to fulfill some people's need to cheat and steal from their fellow gamers, countless websites telling you how to mod your machine to give you unfair advantage or to create hacked lobbies to snare, hack and steal other people's accounts.

The information is openly available and yet M$ never addresses the holes, so the exploits continue, BECAUSE THEIR BANHAMMER IS A MONEY-SPINNER. They block the cheat's machine and account... and then sell them another machine/account. If they plugged the gaps there'd be less cheats/modders, but then they wouldn't make any money selling replacement subscriptions/machines and chalk up another "activation" for their press conferences.

The XBone's restrictions will change this slightly; the 24-hourly online "check-in" will report alterations to the machine and feed the banhammer target lists more effectively than their periodic centrally-controlled sweeps, and when a modder is banned they will also lose all of the games they have linked to that account due to the games-locking "DRM" (Digital RENTAL Management... it's not like gamers have any rights any more lol). So instead of buying a second-hand replacement 360, registering for another XBL free trial and being good-to-hack again they'll have to replace the games too. This won't stop the modders, it'll just make them angrier and more likely to fall in with the script-kiddies for their next crusade against the corporate world they're too immature to understand.

Well another one leaving MS behind. I am so pissed i unplugged my XB360 and put it away. It feels so wrong playing with this console. MS is not getting another cent of my money. I had a PS3 since launch as many of the XBox ppl.
Well after more than 200 retail games 6 euro Consoles 1 US Console and even a Jap Console they can kiss my ass with their DRM shit.
Stopped playing Remember me on the 360 at chapter 4 and bought a PS3 Version.
I am fully aware, as we all should, that the very userfriendly behaviour of Sony is nothing but a buisiness model but i like this one MUCH more than the Crap MS did.
How can a company destroy the reputation they build for 12 Years in less than 4 weeks. Is kinda funny !
At least for those of you who played Bayonetta... i hope my collectible guide ( linked from 360 Achiev. ) helped you out a bit.

So? What kind of HDD will it take? Will it be SSD or 2.5 inch laptop HDD like ps3? if it is an SSD then they REALLY raping us because a 64 GB SSD is like 64 EURO'S which is 1 euro per GB and a 1 TB 2.5 inch laptop HDD of the ps3 is like 60 EURO'S and that is a western digital 2.5 inch HDD which is the best what i have heard..., I WONDER WHAT they will put in that ps4, SSD IS! faster but WAAAAY too expensive to buy a 1, 2 or even 3, 4 TB, even a 500 GB is WAAAAY too expensive, i dont think they are going to put an SSD that is more expensive then the whole console, so, I THINK its going to be the SAME hard drive that is in PS3, i HOPE! im going to buy a 3-4 TB then...

because if it was region free for bluray movies - well that would make me consider purchasing day one.
