PS3T's Trophy Awards 2011-2012 - The Best and Worst Trophies of the Year
PS3T's Trophy Awards 2011-2012 - The Best and Worst Trophies of the Year
Written Saturday, June 30, 2012 By PS3T Staff

Happy Birthday to us!!  It's pretty hard to believe that the site has been around for four years already.  We've grown to the point that we're one of the best and biggest Playstation communities on the internet now.  All of that is a credit to our amazing members and staff who carry the site.

As part of our birthday celebration, we present to you our third annual Trophy Awards.  Each year, we put it to the members to tell us what the easiest, hardest, best and worst trophies of the previous year were.  This year, we have a mix of staff and member choices.  The staff picked the easiest and hardest winners as well as two of our bigger awards, Best Trophy List and Worst Trophy List.  The members voted for the more subjective categories like Best Trophy Image and Most Original Trophy.  What has resulted is a great mix in the results.

All of the games nominated came out in 2011.  We'll be saving this year's releases and the Vita for next year's awards (well, hopefully we'll be having a Vita category next year).  Finally, there are two new categories to introduce, and both are for the Playstation Move, Best Use of the Move and the hilariously named Sweatiest Platinum.

With all of that being said, let's get on to the awards.  Enjoy them!!

Better Than Bronze

If you’ve ever played a Mortal Kombat game before, even on an easy difficulty, you probably have some idea of how frustrating they can be, and last year’s reboot is no different. From the moment you hear the word “Fight!” the AI is all over you, blitzing you with cheap specials, juggle combos and unblockable attacks. Asking trophy hunters to complete the arcade ladder on the hardest difficulty without losing a fight is sicker than most of the game’s fatalities, and to top it all off, all you get is a lousy bronze trophy. Either the developers expected too much from its fans, or this trophy is their sickest joke since the DC Universe made a cameo.

Easiest Indivdiual Trophy

We’ve said in the previous Trophy Awards that someday, there will be a trophy for simply putting the disc into the console.  You Go Back to Hell from Shadows of the Damned takes it as close to possible as you can get to that.  You put in the disc, watch a few logos appear on the screen, adjust the brightness settings, and boom, trophy.  There is no need to start up a game or even reach the main title screen.

For the time being, this is the easiest trophy currently available.  We only say “for the time being” because we all know that someone will make one that unlocks even more quickly.

Easiest Action/Adventure Platinum

Is it possible to ever have too many choices for an award?  Green Lantern, Captain America, and NCIS all released to great rejoicing from trophy hunters the world over.  All of those games deserve a mention, but they all had one terrible flaw that ensured that they wouldn’t win this award; you had to actually complete the game.   Imagine having to actually play all the way through a game to get every trophy.  What an unreasonable request.

Fortunately, our winner doesn’t have that problem.  With Trine 2, you only have to play up to chapter six (or thereabouts) of…well I don’t actually know how many because I never did finish it.  Starting from scratch should take you around three to four hours.  If you want to play with a friend that has the platinum trophy already, you can do it in half that time.  It’s really pretty ridiculous, especially when you considering the collecting nightmare that the first Trine was.

In all seriousness, we can only hope that this isn’t the start of some new trend where a completed trophy list can be attained without a completed game.  On the other hand, we do need games for these awards.

Easiest Fighting Platinum

Fighting games are usually hit and miss (bah-dum-tsh).  They’ll depend largely on the player’s skill.  Veterans to a franchise can usually blow through a game and get that elusive platinum trophy with ease.  New players struggle and grind their way through it.  How many fighting games can you think of where veterans and newbies can both say “this was pretty easy”?  I can think of only one, and it’s our winner here, Tekken Tag Tournament HD.

For veterans of the series, every trophy can be earned in a couple of hours.  For the newer players, it can only take a few hours more than that.  Only a small handful of the 36 trophies (we’re talking two or three at the most) will give anyone any trouble.  Most are easily done with or without the aid of a second controller (which will clearly make things go a lot quicker).  Finding a fighting game that veterans and rookies alike agree is easy pretty well clinches Tekken Tag Tournament’s place on this list.

Easiest Racing Platinum

Since Disney Pixar releases a new movie just about every year, there also comes with it the inevitable movie tie-in.  As it usually goes with movie tie-ins, the trophies turn out to be easy.  Last year’s Pixar event (let’s be honest, Pixar movies are events now) was Cars 2 and lo and behold, the trophies are easy.  Shocker of all shockers there.  What makes Cars 2 our easiest racing platinum?  The fact that you can use constantly use cheats without disabling any of the trophies.  Wouldn’t you know it, there’s a cheat code for unlimited turbo boosting.  Aside from the collectibles, it’s an enjoyable drive for a quick platinum.

Easiest RPG Platinum

RPG’s have one inherent flaw that makes defining them as “easy” difficult, some of them just take way too damn long.  It was a close vote between The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim and The Lord of the Rings: War in the North.  Skyrim may require more time, but Lord of the Rings requires multiple playthroughs.  Neither is really overly appealing and lends itself to an easy platinum trophy.  Easy becomes a relative term here because of that.  We’re giving the award to Skyrim here for one reason, you can earn the trophies any way you want.  You’ll be hard pressed to get the platinum time under 80 hours, but you can also jump around Skyrim more than House of Pain would.  To us, that’s easier and more freeing than following the strict, linear narrative of War in the North.

Easiest Shooter Platinum

The recent trend for the big first person shooter franchises has been gritty, plausible, similar to real world scenarios.  Ok, Modern Warfare strays a bit from this realism at times, but it’s still, along with Battlefield and Medal of Honor, supposed to be more grounded as a military shooter.  You know what would make things easier, completely ridiculous and over the top, unrealistic action.  Stuff like blowing up tanks with pistols and one shot kills of everything.  That’s the kind of thing that you can expect from our winner in this category, Heavy Fire: Afghanistan.  It’s an on rails shooter that is so insanely easy that the only difficulty will be overcoming your own boredom.  Anywhere from two to six hours will be spent working on the platinum for this masterpiece (and by masterpiece, we mean master piece of shit).  If you’re looking for a quick shooter to play and/or need an excuse to break out the Move, here you go.

Easiest Sports Platinum

Sports game’s trophies usually gravitate towards extreme frustration (the Fight Night direction) or extreme simplicity (the Madden direction).  Each year, Madden seems to get progressively easier.  While most of the world doesn’t play, watch, understand, or care about the American version of football (but let’s face it, you totally should…best sport ever), that doesn’t prevent people worldwide from earning each yearly iteration’s platinum.

Like most teams that come close to winning a championship, Madden has come up short the last two years for this award.  This year, the favorite finally pulls through with an easy eight to ten hour journey of random games and accomplishing specific feats with specific players.  Madden Ultimate Team added a new element to the series, but aside from one awful trophy glitch, all of those can be done without any trouble.

Enjoy the Gatorade bath Madden.  You finally accomplished your goal, the title of Easiest Sports Platinum.

Easiest PSN 100%

Certain awards are slam dunks.  This is one of them.  If you have a PSN game in which all 12 trophies can be earned in between 30 minutes and two hours, you have a good contender for this award.  Sure, there were plenty of easy games (thank you Sega, by the way), but Daytona USA is easier than all of them.  Back to the Future, Altered Beast, and Who Wants to be a Millionaire are all easy, but Daytona USA passes them, laps them, and is celebrating with a bottle of milk long before any of the games can be finished.  And thankfully, we somehow managed to avoid a rolling start joke. *sigh* Damn it, we just had to mention it.  Oh well.

Easiest Overall Platinum

2011 was really a banner year for easy platinum trophies.  Each successive release seemed to set a new gold (or platinum) standard of easiness.  Cabela’s Adventure Camp, NCIS, Trine 2, and Captain America all had relatively easy platinum trophies to earn.  NCIS, you only had to beat the game.  Trine 2, you didn’t have to beat the game.  Cabela’s Adventure Camp, you just had to do a series of minigames.  There were other ridiculously easy games that didn’t even make it past the nominations like Man vs. Wild and Green Lantern: Rise of the Manhunters.

Despite the incredible number of really easy games, there was only one choice here.  We had to go to Japan for it, but Melt of a Cool Breeze: Days in the Sanctuary (Japanese name: Ryoufuu no Melt: Days in the Sanctuary) is really as easy as it gets.  While you do have to play through it nine times (yes, nine), with scene skipping on, each playthrough takes a matter of minutes.  Oh, and you don’t need to speak a word of Japanese.  Those nine playthroughs should net you the platinum trophy in an hour or two.  Most of the Japanese visual novels are pretty easy to get the platinum trophy in, this one is something else though.  When the hardest part of a game is getting over the price tag, you know that you're really in for some easy trophies.  If you were looking for the Japanese version of Terminator: Salvation, then here it is.

Most Time Consuming Trophy

Not only did My Kung Fu is Stronger win this award by a landslide, but we should seriously consider renaming the award in its honor. The trophy requires you to play as each character for 24 hours, even the lame ones like Quan Chi. Even if you decide to take the easy route and use a turbo controller or leave your PS3 on all night, you’ll want to pack your PS3 in ice if you want to survive the 672 hours of grinding. If it’s any consolation, it’s quicker to get this trophy on the PS3 than on the Vita, which adds another four characters to the list of requirements.

Hardest Individual Trophy

When the Metal Gear Solid Collection was originally announced, trophy hunters that had played the original games were understandably concerned. Sons of Liberty and Snake Eater both had additional modes and challenges that had always been reserved for the best of the best, but now, thanks to magic of trophies, everyone hoping to add Metal Gear platinums to their collection would have to suffer through them. The hardest trophy in the collection, and the winner of this award is Virtually Impossible, which requires players to complete 500 challenges featuring the best (or worst) of the game’s combat and stealth gameplay. Even Metal Gear experts have their work cut out for them when it comes to the missions featuring Snake from MGS1, which robs you of your radar and fills each challenge with eagle eyed guards that would give Waldo fits. If you’re looking for a quick platinum, look elsewhere; gamers report spending 30-60 hours on this trophy alone.

Hardest Action/Adventure Platinum

There were a few standouts in the hardest action/adventure category this year, but nothing comes close to the sadistic she-beast that is Catherine. We’ve all gotten used to the idea of Japanese games shaming us with bizarre stories and sadistic difficulty, but this game has easily dethroned the Souls RPGs as the baddest of the bunch. Catherine is a challenging, but ultimately rewarding puzzle game if you’re just playing it to experience the game, but if you plan on platinuming Catherine, you’re in for a merciless ass kicking. Trying to get a gold trophy in every level on Hard is punishing enough (plan on hearing the phrase “Head goes boom!” until it seeps into your nightmares), but you also have the randomized Babel levels to deal with. The Catherine forum is filled with members simply walking away from the game after spending weeks, even months on the four levels. Simply put, Babel is where platinum hunters go to die.

Hardest Fighting Platinum

This year’s hardest fighting platinum was an incredibly close race between Mortal Kombat and Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3. As with most difficult fighting platinums, both games require an enormous commitment and a skill set many players simply don’t have. Mortal Kombat’s platinum requires a perfect run through the game’s arcade ladder on the hardest difficulty, which is no easy task (see this year’s Better Than Bronze winner) and a full day spent playing with each character.  But UMvC3 somehow manages to top those already unreasonable requirements. As many members have pointed out in the MK forum, with certain characters and by spamming certain moves, it is possible to bumble your way through MK’s arcade ladder, but UMvC3 doesn’t give you that opportunity. For its most difficult trophy, there is no AI to exploit, it’s just you, an empty arena, and a crapload of combos. Unlike the previous MvC game, this one requires that you complete all 240 missions in the game. The timing of these combo challenges may not be as unforgiving as Street Fighter 4 or Blazblue, but for most people, trying to finish Amaterasu’s missions will either have you on eBay shopping for a fight stick with tears of frustration stinging your eyes, or developing an irrational hatred for Okami and dogs in general.

Hardest Racing Platinum

Alright, so it wasn’t exactly a busy year for racing games, but Dirt 3 managed to take the checkered flag as the hardest racing platinum. This year’s F1 game was a breeze compared to last year’s entry, which basically meant Dirt 3 won by default, but it was no Sunday drive in its own right. Some of the DC challenges were downright frustrating, and while it doesn’t relate to difficulty, the online trophies were an enormous time sink. Either way, with a new Need For Speed game and LittleBigPlanet Kart Racing on the horizon, next year’s racing games will likely prove a bigger challenge.

Hardest RPG Platinum

Anytime a follow-up to a notoriously difficult game is released with the tagline “You Will Die,” you know you’re in for a rough time. Such is the case with Dark Souls, the spiritual sequel to Demon’s Souls, and without question the hardest RPG platinum of the past year. Sure, there are plenty of people who will insist that using exploits and farming certain items, Dark Souls is actually pretty easy. Those people are liars. If your RPG experience begins and ends with Bethesda games, or you piggybacked through Demon’s Souls with every weapon and item handed to you, you have a better chance of sprouting wings and flying to Neptune than you do beating Dark Souls. Don’t sayI didn’t warn you.

Hardest Shooter Platinum

2011 will best be remembered for the war between Battlefield and Call of Duty, but they were only two of a crowded field of difficult shooters last year. None of this year’s nominees were a cakewalk, but shooter veterans will be familiar enough with nearly all of these games to eventually get through them. I say nearly all of them, because Child of Eden is nothing like any shooter you’ve ever played, and all the Call of Duty practice in the world will do nothing to help you. Considering how rare the on-rails shooter has become, Child of Eden will seem as familiar to shooter fans as Frogger does for driving game fans. Without superhuman reflexes, hours of memorization and precision aiming, you can expect to be repeatedly embarrassed by a psychedelic space whale, which isn’t as fun as it sounds.

Hardest Sports Platinum

EA Sports continues its reign of terror with another incredibly difficult NHL platinum. Never again can FIFA fans complain about having to play the game they bought for 50 or 60 hours; it would be quicker to learn how to skate and make it to the pros than platinum NHL 12. What’s that you say? Time doesn’t equal difficulty? Whether it’s scoring 5 different ways in a single game or maintaining a Crosby-esque skill level through 75 online games, you’ll need to take the phrase “Be a Pro” literally if you want this platinum.

Hardest PSN 100%

It’s taken three years, but a twin stick zombie shooter has finally earned the title of hardest PSN 100%. Limbo and the Mortal Kombat Collection are both impressive games to complete in their own right, but Alien Zombie Megadeath is in a class by itself. Like with Burn Zombie Burn, the game is simple enough to pick up and play, but collecting all 280 of the game’s medals requires alien killing skills that not even Will Smith possesses. Even if you’ve managed to 100% the last two winners of this award, Pain and Joe Danger, you’ll still probably be out of luck.

Hardest Overall Platinum

This year’s nominees for hardest platinum were all among some of the toughest games we’ve seen for the PS3 so far, and none more so than Child of Eden. In addition to being this year’s hardest shooter, Child of Eden managed to top Catherine, UMvC3 and MGS2, despite its status as a little known game made up of only five levels. The game is something you have to play to truly understand, but it basically takes the hardest aspects of rhythm games, on rails shooters and, if you feel particularly masochistic, motion controls, and pairs them with visuals that resemble an epileptic acid trip. The end result is something better resembling a form of torture than a game, and only the most dedicated and skilled gamers will be able to achieve the score requirements in each level. Add to this the fact that very few people have actually played the game, and you have easily one of the most exclusive platinum clubs around.

Sweatiest Platinum Trophy

Our newest and easily most disturbing category this year, UFC Personal Trainer takes the dubious honor of sweatiest platinum. What initially seemed like a quick cash in on the successful UFC brand, the game is actually an intense workout, and you’ll need to put in months of punches, kicks and body hair shaving if you want the platinum. As an added bonus, you may actually pick up a skill that could help you in the future, unlike Michael Jackson, Medieval Moves and We Dare, which will only teach you dancing, sword fighting and shame.

Game With the Most Glitched Trophies

You can define “most glitched” in one of two ways.  The first is to have the highest number of glitched trophies.  That’s pretty obvious and in past years, that’s how it has been defined.  The other is to have the most egregious, ridiculous, and frustrating glitched trophies.  In this year’s case, it is the latter and the winner is The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim.

There really only was one glitched trophy (the others are missable due to the choices that you make in the game, that is not a glitch), and it was a bad, bad glitch.  This may be news to some of you, it certainly was to us, but not everyone that plays video games speaks English.  In fact, did you know that some of these games have been dubbed in these other languages?  Stunning, isn’t it?  It must have been news to Bethesda as well since one of their trophies, Master Criminal, was glitched for all non-English speaking countries.  The coding for the trophy didn’t read the translations properly, and if you spoke German, Spanish, French, Italian, Greek, Japanese, Dragon, Elvish, Klingon, or Pig Latin, the trophy wouldn’t unlock.  To their credit, Bethesda has fixed it with one of the patches post-release, but that didn’t make up for having a locked trophy for two months longer than necessary or the most desperate from purchasing and English version.  Still though, this is a terrible trophy glitch and deserving of the nod here.

Worst Individual Trophy Image

There are bad trophy images, and then there’s this ridiculous thing. Madden NFL 12 managed to do the impossible, stealing this award away from the default trophy image found in New Toudai Shogi. Even assuming there was some correlation between scoring 50 points in a game and Verizon, EA Sports probably could have found a subtler way of paying their bills. This is probably the only trophy that leaves you wondering whether you just accomplished a goal or bought something after it unlocks.

Worst Platinum Trophy Image

A football. The Orange Bowl. Tom Osborne. Joe Theissman’s broken leg. A big jug of Gatorade. A football. These are all things EA Sports could use as a platinum image for the NCAA Football games. Instead, we get the EA Sports logo, year after miserable year. We get it EA, you’re “in the game,” you’re a video game juggernaut and you sold your collective soul to the devil long ago, but this platinum image just feels like an enormous football to the groin, rather than recognition of a job well done.

Each year, what the NCAA Football platinum trophy image looks like is becoming something that we're eagerly looking forward to.  It's a two time winner now.  Will there be a third next year?

Worst Trophy List

Quick show of hands, how many of you knew Resident Evil 4 was going to win this award when you first saw the trophy list? That’s what I thought. The best game in the Resident Evil series got the redheaded stepson treatment from Capcom, particularly with this uninspired trophy list. Even with Resident Evil 5’s list available to basically copy and paste from, the developers instead chose a bare bones list made almost entirely of story-related trophies. Perhaps the biggest atrocity was the lack of a platinum trophy, despite the 360 version receiving a full 1000GS. If you played any of the previous RE4 rereleases, saving the President’s daughter wasn’t worth the trouble this time.

Most Original Trophy

I just want to say up front, I have a big problem with this trophy. Sure, it was just a matter of time before a Metal Gear Solid game, with all of its upskirt shots and inappropriate CODEC conversations, would extend the innuendo to its trophy list. I don’t even mind the fact that you unlock said trophy for phoning Otacon while Snake is cleaning his rifle (get it?) But Snake gets caught looking at a grainy photo of a girl in a bikini? Really Snake? You’re a half step away from spanking it to Good Housekeeping. Get it together, man.

Best Use of the Move Controller

Since releasing in 2010, the Move controller has been largely a disappointment.  There hasn't been a steady stream of games that exclusively use the controller.  What there has been though are plenty of games that have optional control schemes utilizing the Move.  Not every game that has Move based controls works well though.  Shooters are nice, but when they’re not on rails, the Move is a little cumbersome.  What can be a fantastic peripheral has really struggled to find good uses in games.  Games were you say, “The controls with the Move are perfect” are few and far between, unfortunately.

It may have taken quite a while, but LittleBigPlanet 2 accomplishes this feat.  Using the Move with LBP2 is a great way to play it.  The addition of the Brain Crane, making every level Move compatible, and the addition of a new episode, The Rise of the Cakeling (along with a series of minigames such as puzzles, tower defense, and painting) makes LBP2 the best use of the Move out there now.  Something better may come along, but for this year’s awards, LBP2 takes it home.

Best DLC for Trophies

Downloadable content.  You either love it for what it can add to your game or you hate it for the trophies that it adds to your game.  And let’s not forget the prices.  My lord the prices.  They seem to be going up each year.  Developers and publishers keep giving them to us, whether we ask for them or not (right Naughty Bear?).

That being said, the quality of DLC is definitely improving, particularly this years nominees.  Deus Ex’s The Missing Link, Fallout: New Vegas’ Old World Blues, Battlefield 3’s Back to Karkand, and LA Noire’s Reefer Madness were all tightly bunched together during the voting.  Back to Karkand managed to eke out the win.  Presumably, because unlike most other shooters out there, DICE added new maps, weapons, vehicles, and the all new assignments.  All of that content along with the trophies like Jaws and the frustrating, but satisfying, Complete Warrior make it a worthy choice.

Best Trophy Image

This is one of the more interesting categories to watch.  If there’s an image that is even remotely sexual, it gets nominated…repeatedly, and then nominated some more.  When we saw Catherine’s trophy images last year, we knew that somehow, some way, Dreams Come True would be one of the nominees.  We knew that the same thing would happen when the Saints Row: The Third images appeared.  Gotta Break Em In would also be nominated.  What we got during voting was the epic, tit-anic battle of breasts. (We know some of you now picturing two pairs of boobs entering a steel cage and fighting to death. We know that you are, because we did too.)  Two (four) entered, and only one (two) would win.  The only question was which.

What the other four nominees were don’t matter too much.  All of them combined didn’t equal the number of votes that just one of these images had.   The only thing that really matters for the purposes of this award is that Catherine’s Dreams Come True won.  We don’t really know it was the more popular of the two images and we really don’t care.  Maybe it's because they're a more mammar-able image.  Can I get away with one more?  Perhaps it's just the breast image of the two.  The fact of the matter is this, boobs are just awesome, and as it should be, boobs won.

Best Platinum Trophy Title

We here at PS3T, we like our memes.  We like them so much, that we expect every Dragon Ball Z trophy list to have a platinum trophy called OVER 9000!!!!!  The only surprise is that it has taken this long to have a platinum trophy with this name.  That it’s a Dragon Ball Z game makes it even better.  The only thing missing is having Vegeta in the image.

Once again, we’ll use this space as a plea to developers.  There is no Worst Platinum Trophy Title category since it’s a however many way tie between every game that uses “Platinum Trophy” and “Platinum” as the title.  Every other trophy has a unique name.  Please, please, please come up with one more title.

Best Platinum Trophy Image

Like with our best (or breast) individual trophy image, it’s pretty clear to see why Catherine won here too.  You have a cute (to some) blond girl who appears to be naked as a platinum trophy.  How in the world could the Battlefield 3 cover (that’s basically what it is), a flaming hoop that is missing it’s tiger (really Dark Souls, really?!), a dragon in front of a flag (good effort from Operation Flashpoint: Red River), and Naked Snake (See? Naked Snake bad.  Implied naked Catherine, win.) saluting hold a candle to Catherine?  There you go developers, the secret to getting a guaranteed spot in the Trophy Awards, boobs and naked women.  Actually, that’s really a sure fire way to get a spot anywhere, but I digress.  Catherine wins.  Battlefield 3 put up a fight, but it wasn’t enough.

Best Trophy List

And here we are at our signature award.  Our view of the best trophy lists are those that mix together originality, story, random, and collection trophies into a cocktail of gaming awesomeness.  The best lists that you’ll find reward you for completing and fully exploring the game without making things overly easy or crushingly difficult.  We take the top five nominated games from our members and from there, pick one winner.  Without further ado, here are our nominees for the Best Trophy List of 2011.

Batman: Arkham City – The sequel to one of the most surprising games of this generation, Batman: Arkham Asylum, Rocksteady went all out with villains galore and an epic trophy list.  While the trophy list places more emphasis on the story and side missions, there is an additional truckload of combat challenges with the new campaign challenges.  And on top of all of that, the DLC adds more with the challenges for Catwoman, Robin, and Nightwing.  The challenges in Batman are not for everyone and cause an otherwise great trophy list to lose points.

Catherine – Speaking of games not for everyone, we have Catherine.  Atlus’ most recent release is everything that we’ve come to expect from their games, lots of tedium wrapped up in extremely fun and impressive game.  It really is two games wrapped into one with a modern adventure game setting exploring relationships and the puzzling, tower climbing of the nightmarish boss battles.  Catherine has a pretty crazy level of difficulty that only intensifies when you reach the Rapunzel and Babel stages.  While fantastic, the extreme difficulty and odd nature of the game make it a game that is much more niche than it should be.

LA Noire – The long, slowly developing game from Team Bondi finally released last spring.  Boasting impressive visuals (the facial movements were beyond anything that most games do) and an incredibly accurate map (How accurate was it?  I used Google Maps to find several sites.) of 1940’s Los Angeles, LA Noire was a well done and impressive set of trophies.  Finding classic Hollywoodland film reels and sight-seeing around post-war LA was never a chore.  The only things knocking this trophy list down are driving 149.7 miles and finding and driving every car.  The boring grind of the mileage (since you can have your partner drive to every crime scene) and the frustrating, seemingly endless search for cars bring a fun and interesting game to a halt.

Portal 2 – Valve has never disappointed with their achievements.  Their lists have always been pretty spectacular.  Portal 2 marks Valve’s first set of trophies and they did not disappoint.  The trophies are just plain fun to get.  Refuse to play the game.  Intentionally break the rules.  Die on command.  Portal 2’s trophies really have it all.  Every trophy list has a flaw in it though, and Portal’s is the co-op mode.  While it was a lot of fun to explore Aperture Science with a friend, the mode felt tacked on.

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim – The latest entry in Bethesda’s signature series takes us to the northern province of Tamriel.  The trophy list rewards you for fully exploring Skyrim.  The best part about the trophy list…you can do things in any order that you want.  You can avoid the main storyline for as long as possible and do the quests for the other guilds in Skyrim.  The trophy list never feels like a grind (aside from reaching level 50) and is a great set of trophies to collect.  Hopefully Dawnguard and subsequent DLC’s bring the same level of quality.  Sadly though, Skyrim had the terrible trophy glitch for non-English speakers that wasn’t fixed until a couple of months after the game released.

Which list have we chosen for this award?  We have to agree with our sister site and award it to Portal 2.  The list is near perfect and has everything that you could ever want from a set of trophies.  We’re not sure that anyone knows trophies/achievements better than Valve.  While Valve has won five of the six Best List award in X360A’s Achievement Awards, they take home the award with their first trophy list with some pretty tough competition.

Upcoming Game With the Most Potential for Trophies

As always, we close with a look towards next year.  Now I know what you’re thinking, why are we looking forward to GTA V’s trophy list, when GTA IV was such a nightmare to platinum? There’s a good chance that you either gave up on the platinum years ago thanks to the brutal online trophies, or you played enough games of Noose to give yourself brain damage. It may just be the fact that GTA V will undoubtedly be one of the biggest games in the foreseeable future, or it could be the fact that Red Dead Redemption’s trophy list was pretty close to perfect. Whatever the case may be, we’re willing to forgive and forget when it comes to Grand Theft Auto, and we can’t wait to see what we have in store for our return visit to Los Santos.

Thank goodness these are only once a year.  So much work goes into putting these together (the formatting alone takes a couple of hours).  Thank you to all of those who have nominated and voted for awards.  Big thanks to Mendel for writing half of the awards and Savenger for making the awesome images.  We all hope that you enjoyed reading it as much we enjoyed writing it.

Be sure to enter our annual birthday giveaway and we'll hopefully see quite a few of you out for Call of Duty 4 later today

But... For DBZ, Vegeta IS in the tile! Sure, he's hairier and a little less veiny than usual, but... The dude is over 9000 lbs for sure!

Eh, I feel like Skyrim was just voted into the glitch category because there's so much butthurt from PS3 users about the number of minor glitches the game has. When you make an award called Game with the most Glitched trophies and then the winner is one with a single glitched trophy that was eventually patched, it makes me wonder if there were even any others who could have been a better pick.

No, my problem definitely was the unattainable trophy in the German version. I bought the game day 1, but when I learned that I couldn't get Platinum, I quit playing (after only a few hours) and gave it to a friend.
By now, the glitch is long fixed, but I haven't picked it up again since then. The former annoyance now made me pretty much indifferent about that game.
Probably a shame that I miss out on Skyrim, but it's how I feel. This trophy blew it for me. :-(

Thought the Dead Space 2s Hard To The Core trophy would make it to the list.

Crysis 2 should have gotten the award for most glitched trophies as one of them caused many people to spend 40-60 MORE hours in the game simply because a trophy would not pop when it was supposed to, even after being patched.

Well, I have the Hardest RPG (and the Easiest RPG at that - took me a lot longer, too), and am working on both the Hardest Action/Adventure and Hardest Shooter. Will let you know when *that* gets done =/.

Love lists like this. Got some of the easiest and hardest from Trine 2 (took me less than 2 hours) & Tekken Tag Tournament HD to Dark Souls (the pure way).

Love the Catherine trophies but I'm afraid I might smash my TV before I ever get that :)

I'm surprised that Max Payne 3 isn't here. Just look at how hard "The Shadows Rushed Me" is. It trequires you to complete the whole game in New York Minute, in hardcore mode without dying once.

Nice list... I think for Hardest Trophies/Most Time Consuming would have to go to Star Ocean: The Last Hope.

Well I have to say I am impressed that Catherine won so many awards. I never bought it, figuring it was just a T and A game but to know it beat Dark Souls? Really? I had trouble beating the first level of Demon Souls and from what I understand, Dark Souls was nearly as difficult.

For better or worse, this game will never appear in my trophy list, now knowing that I will never see that little platinum icon next to it.

I'm pretty sure Virtua Fighter 5 Showdown could give Daytona USA some competition for easiest PSN 100%. It only took me two hours.
