Introduction

Unravel, developed by Swedish studio Coldwood and published by EA, is a side-scrolling puzzle platformer that centers on Yarny, a character made from a single thread of, well, yarn. The player navigates through 12 chapters set in the lush environments of Northern Scandinavia using the unravelling yarn to solve puzzles, avoid dangerous creatures and traverse obstacles. Unravel shares a lot with LittleBigPlanet, and there are even similarities in the trophy list. It doesn’t have the same depth or variety, but the beautiful art direction and the sheer cuteness of Yarny more than make up for it.

Speaking of trophies, Unravel’s list is very straightforward: you will have to beat all the chapters while keeping in mind during each one to collect all its secrets, accomplish one special objective and finish it in one sitting without dying. Unravel isn’t hard to plat though: with a proper walkthrough and a little patience, unlocking the shouldn’t be too hard or take too long.

General tips

  • If you can't remember how to perform a special move (tie a knot, use your lasso, grab your yarn tail to rappel down, etc.), make sure to hit to get a nice animated reminder.
  • Control-wise, I preferred to use the to slingshot from yarn bridges as shown in the previously mentioned animation (and as opposed to indicated in the first chapter). This is especially useful when you have to jump in a particular direction from the bridge.
  • If you're not comfortable with swinging from a grapple point to another, remember that you can always tie a knot on the first one with and hold to remain attached to it before swinging and using your lasso () to reach the next one, only releasing then.
  • There are no missable trophies; you will be able to replay a level at any time after beating it once thanks to chapter select.
  • All chapters are accessible via photo frames from the house (which serves as a hub in Unravel). These frames will also bear tokens of your progression: a silver star when you first finish a chapter, a golden crown when you beat it without dying, and the number of secrets you've found (the latter being also displayed in plain text). Only the miscellaneous objectives don't show up there. See the picture below for reference.

Walkthrough

Step 1: Beat the game

With Unravel being a story-driven game, I encourage you to play it once without a guide so you can fully experience it. Don’t worry about the collectibles or miscellaneous trophies for now (some of which you’ll pick up along the way anyway), and just enjoy Yarny’s story! If you want to plat the game in the shortest possible time though, feel free to skip this step.

During this step, you will earn all the story-related trophies:

  • Missing piece
  • Watch the waves
  • Found at last
  • Walkabout
  • Everlasting
  • Scarred earth
  • Shut down
  • Reach out
  • Cold but warm
  • Time will catch up
  • The end is not the end
  • Renewed

Step 2: Replay each level to collect the secrets, earn the miscellaneous trophies and beat them all without dying

There are four tasks you need to achieve in each chapter if you want to plat Unravel: finish the chapter (story-related trophies), collect all 5 secrets, perform a special objective (sometimes tied a to specific secret) and beat it without dying. There is only one exception to this: chapter 11 "Last Leaf" doesn’t have any secret or objective. You also can't die in chapter 12 "Renewed" but must beat it once to earn the no-death runs trophy.

Since you can replay chapters in any order you like after beating them once, I strongly suggest fully completing a chapter before moving on to the next one. Finishing chapters without dying will usually be quite easy, but it will help to attempt it right after playing it a couple of times for the other objectives.

During this step, you will unlock all the miscellaneous trophies:

  • Gardener
  • Eagle eye
  • Pacifist
  • Get a clew
  • Pathfinder
  • Dig where you stand
  • Undaunted
  • Obsessive
  • Snowfall
  • Reckless
  • Flow

You will also unlock the ones for collecting all the secrets and beating all the levels without dying:

  • No stone unturned
  • Not so fragile after all

And ultimately...

  • The Red thread

Step 3: Clean up

This won’t be necessary if you followed this walkthrough but if you decided to leave some trophies or couldn’t get them before, this will be the time to replay the appropriate chapter(s) and get them!

26 trophies ( 10  11  )

  • Collect all trophies

I guess you don’t need explanations for this one so... Congrats for helping Yarny on his journey!

  • Mend a broken bond

    Story-related, cannot be missed.

This trophy will be awarded for finishing the twelfth chapter, "Renewed", and thus beating the game.

Don’t hesitate to check my video walkthrough if you get stuck.

Note that you will jump into this chapter straight after completing the previous one, "Last Leaf". You can also access it from the house after finishing it once thanks to the small flower pot next to the "Last Leaf" picture.

  • Find every secret

    Collectibles

Self-explanatory: you will have to find every secret hidden throughout the game. There are 55 of these collectibles, 5 in each chapter except for "Last Leaf" which doesn’t have any, and all look like this:

They usually aren’t too hard to find if you wander a little off the main path. Some will even be in plain sight as you progress, but a few will be tricky to discover by yourself. Note that, as indicated in the Road Map, the number of secrets you have discovered in a chapter is displayed on the corresponding picture frame.

Make sure to check my supplement guide if you need help discovering them all!

  • Finish each level from start to finish without dying

This trophy might send shivers down the spine of LittleBigPlanet and LBP2 players. Rest assured it is nowhere near as hard in Unravel. There are usually a couple tricky parts in each level, but nothing a little patience and a few practice runs won’t beat. If you die, restarting the section by pressing won’t be enough, you will have to start over the whole chapter (which you can do from the menu, you don’t need to back out to the house and reenter it). Note that when you’ve finished a chapter without dying, a golden crown similar to the one on the trophy tile is then displayed on the corresponding picture frame:

My supplement guide features tips for the hardest parts of each chapters, so feel free to check it if you need help finding the safest ways to beat a level! Also note that you can’t die in chapter 12 "Renewed". In fact, you are not even required to play it to unlock the trophy (if you've been acing each level from the start before moving on to the next one, it should pop alongside The end is not the end).

  • Find the eighth missing piece

    Story-related, cannot be missed.

This trophy will be awarded for finishing the ninth chapter, "Winter Sun". Don’t hesitate to check my video walkthrough if you get stuck.

  • Find a broken half piece

    Story-related, cannot be missed.

This trophy will be awarded for finishing the tenth chapter, "Rust". Don’t hesitate to check my video walkthrough if you get stuck.

  • Find the other broken half piece

    Story-related, cannot be missed.

This trophy will be awarded for finishing the eleventh chapter, "Last Leaf". Don’t hesitate to check my video walkthrough if you get stuck.

Secret trophies

  • Tear down all the thistles in one go

This trophy can be earned in the first chapter, "Thistle and Weeds".

You will need to tear down 6 thistles to unlock it, which will probably come naturally as 4 of these must be plucked out to progress through the chapter and the other two conceal secrets. As indicated in the description, you will have to tear them all down in the same run (it doesn't matter if you die, just don't restart the whole level).

This is where you will find them:

    1. After creating your first yarn bridge by tying knots with between close grapple points, you will come to a small bird house where you can build another one. Instead, drop down on the right side of the tree all the way to the ground with , where you will find the first thistle.
    2. After filling a small pond with water and using apples to get to the other side, you will climb up a few stairs onto a wooden patio. Go under the deck chair and drop down on the other side, where you will find the second thistle concealing a checkpoint. You can’t miss it as you’ll need this checkpoint to advance.
    3. After the previous thistle, continue right and jump over some kind of brick. You will find the third thistle further right past the sunflowers.
    4. Shortly after the previous secret, you will jump on the sunflowers to reach the top of a barrel. You will then have to drop down on the other side, where you will need to tear this thistle down to free an old bike. You can’t miss it, as it is also mandatory to keep progressing in the level.
    5. Just after seeing the memory of the little girl in the tree house, this thistle will be on the path in plain sight. You can’t miss it and need to tear it down to reach a checkpoint.
    6. After pushing a letter block through a sandbox, you will come to a see-saw. The last thistle is preventing it from moving and you will need to tear it down to keep advancing. Provided you have taken care of all the previous thistles, the trophy should unlock there.

Make sure to check my supplement guide if you want to know where they are located compared to the secrets, it makes more sense look for both on the same run.

  • Find the secret hidden in the tree tops where you fly

    Collectibles

This trophy can be earned in the second chapter, "The Sea", and unlocks upon collecting the first secret. You will find it in the kite section.

You will first see a tree far in the background, then fly in front of two closer ones with branches. The secret is located on the second branch of another tree after these two (i.e. the third tree with branches). I recommend keeping an average height until this point, then quickly go up between the two branches of the third tree to grab the secret. It is quite difficult to spot, so make sure to check the imahe below and my supplement guide for more details.

  • Make it through the mire in one go without swatting any mosquitoes

This trophy can be earned in the third chapter, "Berry Mire".

You will swat mosquitoes by using your lasso () when no grapple point is highlighted, so you will want to be very careful with it. For example, I suggest you keep a hold of the small wood piece at the beginning for as long as you need it (instead of letting go of it only to use your lasso moments later to grab it again). Also, make sure to hit only when you’re focused on a grapple point and with as few mosquitoes around as possible (you can shake them off by moving/jumping left and right).

Note that the mire has two distinct sections and that the trophy will only unlock at the end of the level. Don’t hesitate to check my supplement guide for a more detailed walkthrough.

  • Get the secret hidden in the mountain maze

    Collectibles

This trophy can be earned in the fourth chapter, "Moutain Trek", and unlocks upon finding the fourth secret. You will find it just after the second encounter with the rodent.

First, you will need to release the rock blocked by a root on the high right. Then, drag it with all the way to left using a couple of yarn bridges. Finally, use it to reach the platform the secret sits on. Don’t hesitate to check my supplement guide for more details about this chapter.

  • Make it to the water wheel without using a log raft

This trophy can be earned in the fifth chapter, "Off the Rails".

A few tricky jumps are required to do this, but nothing too complicated. Note that you won’t be able to get this and the first secret in the same attempt since it requires the use of the log raft (but you can kill yourself or press to restart the section after collecting the secret before going for Pathfinder).

Shortly after the beginning of the level, after crossing the partly destroyed wooden bridge and reaching a checkpoint (where you can see the first secret above the water), you will have the opportunity to get a log raft located in a small shed. Instead, reach the grapple point located underneath it as shown in the image below, either by using the point on the door or by running and jumping towards it.

Then, simply keep going, past the water lock, onto the wooden structure with the second secret and finally swinging from a chain to reach a checkpoint where the trophy will unlock (again, see in the image below).

Don’t hesitate to check my video walkthrough or supplement guide for more details about this section.

  • Use the excavator to find a secret

    Collectibles

This trophy can be earned in the sixth chapter, "Down in a Hole", and unlocks upon finding the fifth secret. As indicated in the description, you will find it around the excavator.

Actually, it is located in the crate you have to move to be able to climb on it (by using it to build a yarn bridge). Once you have reached the checkpoint on top of it, go back down, untie the crate, and move it back where you found it. Activating the excavator to break the barricade will destroy the crate as well, thus revealing the secret. Don’t hesitate to check my supplement guide for more details about this chapter.

  • Find the secret in the crushing zapping death machine

    Collectibles

This trophy can be earned in the seventh chapter, "How Much is Enough", and unlocks upon finding the fourth secret. As indicated in the description, you will find it in the machine where hang from grapple points moving on a chain, trying to avoid electrified obstacles.

After making your way around the first part of the "crushing zapping death machine" hanging from a chain, you will reach a checkpoint next to a piston. The fourth secret will be just below on your left and you will have two options to get it. You can either use your lasso on a moving grapple point in the same fashion you got here (but that means you will have to kill yourself afterwards), or you can use the piston to reach the upper level before dropping back down from the left and swinging to the right to collect it (after which you can just pull yourself back up). Don’t hesitate to check my supplement guide for more details about this chapter.

  • Break all the ice on the way to the letterbox in one go

This trophy can be earned in the eighth chapter, "The Letter".

Basically you will need to destroy a few ice patches, which will be really easy as you will find them all on the main path. They all consist of frozen streams or puddles, and you will have to jump twice on each section to break them (each ice patch having from one to three sections). As indicated in the description, you will have to break them all in the same run (it doesn't matter if you die, just don't restart the whole level).

    • Just after the beginning of the chapter, you will come across a frozen ditch. Break its two sections before going right and up a small slope to reach a trail. You will find a small frozen puddle that you can break up there.
    • Shortly after the previous ice patches, you will reach a checkpoint and see a frozen stream down below. Break its three sections before leaving.
    • After reaching a checkpoint and dropping down from the fence, you will find another frozen stream with a grapple point above. Break its three sections before, and note that you can use the grapple point for safety if you feel like it.
    • This one is impossible to miss. After jumping on a well with a checkpoint, you will have to push a metal milk jug which will shatter the frozen puddle below.
    • Just after the second crow attack, you will find a final frozen stream with three parts. Make sure to break the middle and left ones and remain on the left bank if you want to collect the fifth secret.

Don’t hesitate to check my supplement guide for more details about this chapter.

  • Clear all the snowy branches in one go

This trophy can be earned in the ninth chapter, "Winter sun", and is pretty much self-explanatory.

The trophy description is a bit misleading though, as you can miss a few and still get the trophy. I won’t bother detailing every single branch you need to clear, as all of them are visible from the main path. Just remember to walk on them or use grapple points attached to them and you will be fine. As long as you clear every branch you see, the trophy should pop in the third cave when you use your lasso on a branch next to a checkpoint right after the first set of crumbling ice pillars as shown in the spoiler below. As indicated in the description, you will have to clear them all in the same run (it doesn't matter if you die, just don't restart the whole level).

The trophy unlocked there for me twice. If for any reason it doesn't for you, keep going as there are a few more snowy branches in the remainder of the level.

Don’t hesitate to check my video walkthrough or supplement guide for more details about this section.

  • Find the secret in the engine room

    Collectibles

This trophy can be earned in the tenth chapter, "Rust", and unlocks upon finding the fourth secret. You will find it the garage with a car and a big magnet above.

The secret is concealed in the wooden crate just below the entrance. All you have to do is break the crate with the magnet (that you can activate and control with the yellow pedals on the ground left of the car) before collecting the secret. Don’t hesitate to check my supplement guide for more details about this section.

  • Flow

Use your lasso to jump between 25 different points without touching the ground

This trophy can be earned in the twelfth chapter, "Renewed".

The "points" mentioned in the description refer to the sort of fireflies you will find everywhere in the level. It is rather self-explanatory and you can get it pretty much anywhere in the level, but the perfect spot to get it is around the first secret (the first time you notice many of those points above).

Note that the trophy will unlock when you’re back on the ground, and don’t hesitate to check my video walkthrough or my supplement guide for more details.
