Introduction
Unravel, developed by Swedish studio Coldwood and published by EA, is a side-scrolling puzzle platformer that centers on Yarny, a character made from a single thread of, well, yarn. The player navigates through 12 chapters set in the lush environments of Northern Scandinavia using the unravelling yarn to solve puzzles, avoid dangerous creatures and traverse obstacles. Unravel shares a lot with LittleBigPlanet, and there are even similarities in the trophy list. It doesn’t have the same depth or variety, but the beautiful art direction and the sheer cuteness of Yarny more than make up for it.
Speaking of trophies, Unravel’s list is very straightforward: you will have to beat all the chapters while keeping in mind during each one to collect all its secrets, accomplish one special objective and finish it in one sitting without dying. Unravel isn’t hard to plat though: with a proper walkthrough and a little patience, unlocking the shouldn’t be too hard or take too long.
General tips
- Make sure to check my 100% trophy walkthrough supplement guide if you need any help finding collectibles, earning miscellaneous trophies, tips for your no-death runs or are simply stuck in a chapter! Alternately, you can head straight to my playlist of video walkthroughs.
- If you can't remember how to perform a special move (tie a knot, use your lasso, grab your yarn tail to rappel down, etc.), make sure to hit to get a nice animated reminder.
- Control-wise, I preferred to use the to slingshot from yarn bridges as shown in the previously mentioned animation (and as opposed to indicated in the first chapter). This is especially useful when you have to jump in a particular direction from the bridge.
- If you're not comfortable with swinging from a grapple point to another, remember that you can always tie a knot on the first one with and hold to remain attached to it before swinging and using your lasso () to reach the next one, only releasing then.
- There are no missable trophies; you will be able to replay a level at any time after beating it once thanks to chapter select.
- All chapters are accessible via photo frames from the house (which serves as a hub in Unravel). These frames will also bear tokens of your progression: a silver star when you first finish a chapter, a golden crown when you beat it without dying, and the number of secrets you've found (the latter being also displayed in plain text). Only the miscellaneous objectives don't show up there. See the picture below for reference.
Walkthrough
Step 1: Beat the game
With Unravel being a story-driven game, I encourage you to play it once without a guide so you can fully experience it. Don’t worry about the collectibles or miscellaneous trophies for now (some of which you’ll pick up along the way anyway), and just enjoy Yarny’s story! If you want to plat the game in the shortest possible time though, feel free to skip this step.
During this step, you will earn all the story-related trophies:
- Missing piece
- Watch the waves
- Found at last
- Walkabout
- Everlasting
- Scarred earth
- Shut down
- Reach out
- Cold but warm
- Time will catch up
- The end is not the end
- Renewed
Step 2: Replay each level to collect the secrets, earn the miscellaneous trophies and beat them all without dying
There are four tasks you need to achieve in each chapter if you want to plat Unravel: finish the chapter (story-related trophies), collect all 5 secrets, perform a special objective (sometimes tied a to specific secret) and beat it without dying. There is only one exception to this: chapter 11 "Last Leaf" doesn’t have any secret or objective. You also can't die in chapter 12 "Renewed" but must beat it once to earn the no-death runs trophy.
Since you can replay chapters in any order you like after beating them once, I strongly suggest fully completing a chapter before moving on to the next one. Finishing chapters without dying will usually be quite easy, but it will help to attempt it right after playing it a couple of times for the other objectives.
During this step, you will unlock all the miscellaneous trophies:
- Gardener
- Eagle eye
- Pacifist
- Get a clew
- Pathfinder
- Dig where you stand
- Undaunted
- Obsessive
- Snowfall
- Reckless
- Flow
You will also unlock the ones for collecting all the secrets and beating all the levels without dying:
- No stone unturned
- Not so fragile after all
And ultimately...
- The Red thread
Step 3: Clean up
This won’t be necessary if you followed this walkthrough but if you decided to leave some trophies or couldn’t get them before, this will be the time to replay the appropriate chapter(s) and get them!
