Introduction

Rochard is a 2D action platforming game with puzzle elements based on gravity manipulation mechanics.

You play as John Rochard, the head of a spectacularly unsuccessful mining outfit that makes a very strange discovery, a discovery that brings unwanted attention to the team and plunges them into danger...

Step One: play through the game

There are no difficulty settings in the game, so simply start a new game and get playing: make sure to find as many collectibles as you can, and be mindful of the few specialized kill-related trophies in the game. A single playthrough will take you anywhere from around 6-10 hours, with the variability of that time pretty much depending on your ability to figure out some relatively straightforward puzzles.

At the end of the game you're likely to have every trophy except for Death on Delivery, and - if you missed any of the 92 collectibles - 100% Gold Collectibles Found and Pack Rat. Also, you obviously won't have the Speed Run trophy which will require a second playthrough.

Step Two: cleanup via chapter select

I highly recommend finishing off all other trophies before moving on to the speed run: if you missed any collectibles, then find them now - you can check how many collectibles you've found per chapter in the chapter select menu. If you need any help finding or getting to any of the collectibles, then click here - Rochard: collectible and upgrade guide - for a complete collectible guide.

Also, if you've missed out on any kills - particularly the kills relating to the Death on Delivery trophy - then work on those via chapter select as well.

There are two reasons for cleaning up the trophies before going for the speed run: first, it's just so you don't have anything else on your mind while playing through the speed run - you can skip several fights and will want to do so and will not, therefore, want to be thinking about getting a kill-related trophy whilst blitzing your way through the game; second, you might want to refresh your memory of the early levels in order to get ready for the speed run - my experience is that the later levels of a game are always easier (and easier to remember) than the first levels when you're just starting out and getting used to how the game plays.

Step Three: speed run

You now need to complete the game in 3 hours or less. This shouldn't pose much of a problem for the vast majority of players - the game is pretty straightforward, and with all other trophies taken care of and nothing else to distract you, things should go pretty smoothly. For a couple of tips and warnings pertaining to the speed run, please see the trophy description for that trophy - which is called, appropriately enough, Speed Run.

14 trophies ( 11  )

  • Collect 25% of all Gold Collectibles

Please refer to 100% Gold Collectibles Found.

  • Collect 50% of all Gold Collectibles

Please refer to 100% Gold Collectibles Found.

  • Collect 100% of all Gold Collectibles

There are 70 Gold Collectibles spread across the five levels of the game; they are large squares with a trophy icon in the middle of them, and when you pick them up the game refers to them as "trophy collectibles".

Most of the collectibles will be in plain sight (though there are a few that are hidden) and you'll just need to figure out how to get to them. In order to facilitate getting all of them I've created a complete collectible guide; click here - Rochard: collectible and upgrade guide - to see it.

All of the collectibles can, without exception, be obtained when you first come across them - you will not need to obtain items and return to areas to get any collectibles. Having said that, if you do miss any of the collectibles, the game does have a chapter select function that allows you to replay levels and find whatever you may have overlooked.

Also note that the game automatically saves all collectibles once you've obtained them - if you die after obtaining a collectible but before hitting a checkpoint you WILL NOT have to collect it again.

  • Collect all upgrades

There are 22 upgrades to be found across the five levels of the game, and the effects they have range from increasing your health to making your weapons more powerful to increasing your explosive capacity.

The vast majority of the upgrades will be found simply by progressing through the game, but in case you're having trouble finding any I've created a complete collectible guide; click here - Rochard: collectible and upgrade guide - to see it.

As with the Gold Collectibles, the upgrades can be obtained without having to do any backtracking; but if you do miss any of them you can pick them up using the game's chapter select function.

Also like the collectibles, the game will automatically save any upgrades you pick up, so if you get one and then die before reaching a checkpoint you WILL NOT have to find it again.

  • Kill an enemy with an object shot with G-Lifter

The G-Lifter is your default weapon: press to fire an anti-gravity beam that will pick up objects, carry them, fire them, etc; aim your shots with the , and fire the object by pressing again (note that heavy crates will have to be picked up in Low-G: hold down to affect gravity, then press to pick up the crate).

Seeing as how you won't have any other weapon when you meet them, you're almost certain to get this trophy when you face the first two enemies of the game: you'll have to jump up onto a platform above them with two crates on it; pick up a crate with , walk to the edge of the platform, aim at an enemy with the , and shoot the crate with - a direct hit with a crate will result in an instant kill.

  • Kill a human enemy with another enemy's body

I had a weird experience with this trophy: one enemy was standing and shooting at me, and another enemy was running towards us; I melee killed the first enemy (), and he crumpled over right as the second enemy ran into him, and then the second enemy just died, and the trophy unlocked...I doubt that anyone would actually be able to intentionally reproduce these circumstances if they tried, so in order to figure out how to get this trophy most people will probably want to click on the spoiler:

At the very start of the fifth and final level you will acquire an old-school G-Lifter that has the ability to pick up humans; picking up an enemy with the G-Lifter results in instant death for that enemy; carry the body with you to another enemy and shoot the body into him.

  • Kill a human enemy with deflected bullets

Another trophy that was a bit weird for me: the description says to kill a human enemy with deflected bullets, but it unlocked for me after I destroyed a turret with its own deflected bullets - feel free to try this, but don't fret if it doesn't unlock against a turret, as it is very easy to kill human enemies with deflected bullets.

Pick up a crate with the G-Lifter by pressing ; now simply hold the crate in front of you to deflect any bullets being fired at you; you can somewhat control the direction of the deflected bullets by using the to change the arc and the direction of the crate (closer or further to you, up or down). Note that the closer you are to a human enemy the more likely it is that the bullets will deflect right back at them.

Also note that there is a droid enemy that you will encounter later in the game that will fire a thick laser beam at you; this beam cannot be deflected and will destroy light crates, so only use heavy crates to block it (heavy crates must be lifted with Low-G activated - hold down to activate Low-G).

  • Kill an enemy by falling on him

If you're high enough, dropping onto an enemy will result in an instant kill. There are several places in the game where you can get this: pretty much any time you have an opportunity to drop through a hatch or off of a platform in a room with enemies, there's likely to be an enemy underneath that hatch or platform for you to fall on; the enemies do patrol, though, so you might have to be patient and wait for an enemy to pass beneath you.

One of the places you can actually work on getting this is right after you acquire the Rock Blaster: you'll go back the way you came towards an elevator; you'll hear the elevator coming up - there's an enemy on it; if you run right to the edge and go over it before the elevator arrives, you're very likely to land directly on top of the enemy and kill him; if you miss, you can quit to the main menu and restart your checkpoint in order to try it again.

  • Electrocute a human enemy

There are several places you can get this trophy; the first place is in the third part of the first level, "Calling Reinforcements": you'll need to pull a fuse to disable a red force field wall and insert it into another socket in order to activate a red force field floor over top of an electric field; as you pass over the red floor an enemy on the right will notice you; wait for him to run onto the red floor, then run back, pull the fuse, and the enemy will fall into the electric field.

  • Kill 100 enemies using the Rock Blaster

This will come without even trying: when you acquire the Rock Blaster you'll feel so relieved to get an actually lethal weapon that you'll probably use it non-stop for most immediately subsequent enemy encounters - if you do use the weapon frequently, the 100 kills will come very quickly, probably by late in the second chapter.

In order to toggle between the G-Lifter and the Rock Blaster, press ; aim the Rock Blaster with the , and shoot by holding or pressing

  • Kill 100 enemies using objects shot or dropped with G-Lifter

Chances are that once you acquire the Rock Blaster you're going to stop using the G-Lifter for long stretches of time. Once you get the 100 kills with the Rock Blaster, I recommend you be very mindful of making use of the G-Lifter to shoot objects at people; as you get further in the game, the number of droids that attack you becomes pretty irritating, and because it's hard to kill them with the G-Lifter when there's more than one around, you're going to want to try and get as many kills as possible with this weapon earlier in the game.

Note that bullets deflected by objects with the G-Lifter do not count for this trophy.

Also note that, if you don't have this trophy by the end of the game, you can get it by replaying chapters and farming these kills. I do not know, however, whether they will carry over to a new playthrough of the game.

One final note: it does not seem that the game will save kill statistics if you haven't reached a checkpoint before dying; I actually died a lot during this game (I tend to experiment doing really weird things, which is the reason for this), and counting all of the retries and numbers of enemies I killed with this weapon through the retries, I easily had 100 kills by the end of the game but no trophy - so I do not recommend trying to farm areas by getting a few kills, dying, then killing the same enemies over again, because I do not think that will work.

  • Kill 2 or more enemies with a single exploding mechanical enemy

I found this trophy to be a little tricky to pull off because of the somewhat erratic nature of enemy behaviour in the game - sometimes they run at you, sometimes they just stand and shoot at you, sometimes they don't even notice you until you're right up in their mugs and knockin' 'em down. Because of this, it's a little hard to try and figure out where exactly you can do this.

A few things to note: the enemies in question can be either human or mechanical or one of each (and it's probably a good idea to try and kill one human and one mechanical enemy because of the fact that human enemies have a tendency to kill one another - if two human enemies are on the same plane and firing at you, the one behind will almost inevitably kill the one in front); the easiest enemies to take out are humans and turrets; and the best enemies to use as the exploding enemy are droids.

The place I got this trophy was right near the start of "Skypolice returns", the second part of the fourth level, "Back to the Temple": you get separated from Skyler and have to climb up from a cavern and kill several enemies; next, you'll have to drop onto a huge crate that emerges from a red force field wall on the left and ride it through a tunnel until it emerges from that tunnel and disappears into a red force field wall on the right, which forces you to drop down onto a few crates and trigger a checkpoint. There's a ladder to your left, and once you go down it you'll be attacked by a droid, and beneath this area is a turret and a human enemy. I shot the droid to put it into "critical", picked it up with the G-Lifter, dropped down to the two enemies and held it up between them, and the resulting explosion killed them both. I will point out that I had to try this about 10 times at the location in question before I could get the enemies to act the way I wanted them to; even so, I found it to be a good place to attempt this because it had the exact number of required enemies and the checkpoint was right there - if I failed I just let myself die and immediately tried again.

This is probably going to be a pretty variable experience for people, though; some people will probably get it without even trying, and some people are going to have to go through a lot of trial and error. I recommend doing what I did: if you find a location that feels like you can accomplish it there and the checkpoint is convenient, then just keep trying for a while - at the very least you'll get a bit of a feel for what you're going to need to do.

  • Defeat Maximillian

The trophy description has given the game away, but I'll still put a description of this fight in a spoiler tag.

The fight takes place in a large room with four statues in - more or less - the four corners of the room: top and bottom of the left and right sides. There are several G-Swing crates around the room to facilitate easy movement, which is going to be necessary not only to reach the statues you have to destroy, but also to evade Maximillian - who flies around throwing slow-developing but very lethal attacks at you -, the black holes that will deflect your bullets, and the droids that pursue you.

You need to destroy the four statues, which is easy enough: I recommend swinging from one side to another in order to bait enemies to you, then quickly swing to the other side of the room and shoot the closest statue with the Rock Blaster - the gun will destroy the statues in seconds.

Having destroyed the statues, you will have to land on the small platform right in the middle of the room to activate the disc by pressing . Now you have to directly attack and defeat Maximillian, and the same rules that applied to the statues apply here: avoid the droids and black holes by creating space through swinging; as Maximillian approaches you, shoot his cart with the Rock Blaster and, when he's close enough, throw sticky charges at him.

It's an easy fight as long as you stay mobile.

  • Complete the game in 3 hours or less

If you're anything like me, you hate speed runs - they're not fun, they're not particularly challenging, they're just irritating: being on the clock always makes me do stupid things I would never otherwise do, and I basically play poorly simply because I'm dreading failing and having to do the entire thing all over again. Luckily, the 3 hour speed run in Rochard isn't too bad. First things first, though - here are my times:

    Astrominer: 54 minutes
    Zeronimo: 28 minutes
    Skyrig: 52 minutes
Back to the Temple: 18 minutes
    Old Mines: 16 minutes

As you can see, I did pretty poorly on a couple of levels (1 and 3), and the last two levels were, by far, the quickest - so rest assured that you have some room for mistakes; if you can get through the first four levels in around two and a half hours you're in great shape.

A couple of notes: the speed run has to be done as a new game; you CANNOT fool the game by quitting to the main menu if something goes wrong and then continuing - the time played when you quit is what will be saved; also, you CANNOT fool the game by choosing to restart a level if things are going poorly for you - again, your playtime will be saved.

What you can do if you really need to is quit directly out to the XMB - let's say you spend way more time than you would like to in a room and then you die...press the button on your controller to go to the XMB, choose to "quit game", then start the game up again and continue from the main menu: your time will be what it was at your last checkpoint, not what it was when you quit out.

A handy trick for any room is to pause the game as soon you enter it - the time stops while the game is paused, and the game screen stays visible while the game is paused, so you can pause the game and take a moment to reacquaint yourself with the room, examine it, and recall the puzzles and enemies and what it is you have to do in order to get through it.

Almost all of the upgrades are directly in your path while progressing through the game, so there's no need to worry about getting them; do not, however, bother with any of the Gold Collectibles, as they do absolutely nothing for you apart from unlocking the related trophies.

And I will just say this in closing: if I can get through the speed run then just about anyone else should be able to as well.
