Resident Evil: Darkside Chronicles HD Archive File Guide

Introduction:
Resident Evil: Darkside Chronicles and its sister game, Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles, are two on-rails shooters originally exclusives for the Wii. If you’re new to the series, what you will be seeing in this game are condensed (and sometimes tweaked) versions of two older Resident Evil games and a brand new story to the series. Resident Evil: Darkside Chronicles HD holds the summarised versions of Resident Evil 2, Resident Evil CODE: Veronica, and a brand new story describing the previously-unexplained past of Jack Krauser and Leon S. Kennedy.

Trophy wise, there is no comparison. Darkside Chronicles HD demands a much longer amount of time from the player (one Title requires 50 hours of total gameplay) and requirements can be very tedious. Not to mention, Darkside Chronicles HD will result in spending double the time Umbrella Chronicles HD requires. All in all, this is the harder of the two.

Walkthrough:

I - Complete the game for the first time (Optional: Collect all Archive files)
Run through the game for your first time, picking up all story-related trophies and enjoying the content the game has to offer. Altogether, there are three main scenarios, two of which are based on elder games from the Resident Evil franchise: Resident Evil 2, Resident Evil CODE: Veronica, and a new story with Krauser and Leon. As with Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles, there are Archive files scattered throughout the Chapters of the scenarios and side-missions. If you don’t mind having a guide at your side for the duration of your first play through, collect all Archive files now. If you wish not to do this and want to just play through the game for fun, feel free to do so, but it will add an extra playthrough to your 100% run. Also, make sure to get the GOOD Ending in the fifth chapter of Operation Javier. Further information is included in the Other Side Of The Coin trophy. Strategies for bosses are also located in their respective trophies as well.

On a side note, watch out for the Ninja Skills trophy. It can be quite difficult if you're not prepared. Check out the trophy for further information.

Trophies unlocked:
The Little Fugitive
What Research Holds In Store
Ninja Skills
Mad Queen
Angelic Voice
Bye-Bye, Mommy
Forbidden Power
Head Shot Freak

II - Clear the Secret Chapters (Operation Javier)
If you successfully gained the GOOD Ending in the Operation Javier scenario, you will unlock two further chapters. Unfortunately, the content isn't anything new - you're just replaying Chapter Four and Five while hearing Krauser's thoughts every now and then. It's interesting to hear, as you finally discover the reason for Krauser's hatred towards Leon. The chapters are only slightly harder in difficulty, but the same strategies apply to bosses.

Trophies unlocked:
Other Side of the Coin

III - Collect all Archive files
Collect all the Archive files in the game. The Archive files are basically small bits of information about characters, events, or the games themselves. These files are all over the place, and are mainly obtained by shooting an inanimate object, be it a light, box, shelf, etc.

There’s quite a few to collect, which is why I recommended collecting them all in your first playthrough, to kill two birds with the one stone. Of course, if you have collected all of them already, move onto the next step. If not, start up a new play through for files.

POTENTIAL GLITCH NOTE:
It seems that the most important title in Darkside Chronicles - Extreme Collector - is potentially glitched as, for some, it does not unlock even after collecting all archive files. If this happens, there is a remedy to unlocking it so read the title's description at the bottom of my
Resident Evil: Darkside Chronicles Archive File Guide for details on how to ensure you earn the title without restarting.

IV - Clear the Secret Stage
The hidden game is a side mission unlocked by completing the game once. It is basically a side-mission with one catch - all the enemies are blocks of tofu. You can access it by pressing the previously unavailable 'Secret' option in the Main Menu. If you are completely bewildered as to why this is so, it is an inside joke from Resident Evil 2.

Complete this stage to unlock the next trophy.

Trophies unlocked:
Tofu Smack Down!

V - Clearing all scenarios with an S rank
In this step, you must complete every main scenario and side-mission with an S rank, on the hardest difficulty. This may seem like a daunting task at first; but after having played through the game already once, you should have warmed to the controls well enough by now. Don't worry, the Secret Stage is not required for your S rank run.

VERY IMPORTANT INFORMATION:
Here's the good news: the game carries only your best stats. For example, if you gain an S in Clear Time with B's in Enemies Eliminated and Headshots in a Chapter, while upon replaying the Chapter you gain an A in Clear Time with an S in Enemies Eliminated and Headshots, the game will consider you to have attained S's in all three criteria, gaining you an overall S rank. This will make gaining an S rank in a level substantially easier. You can check your recorded score in a level under Scores in the Main Menu.

If you didn’t earn the Headshot Freak trophy, you will most definitely earn it now. Completing this step will unlock the last trophy of the game.

Trophies unlocked:
Archive Collector
Professional

12 trophies ( 7  )

  • Hear the singing voice of a little girl.

This is story-related and cannot be missed. You will unlock this in the first Chapter of the Operation Javier scenario.

At the end of the Chapter, you will go to a church to find a girl there. This girl is Manuela Hidalgo, and is important to Operation Javier’s storyline. She’ll be singing, seemingly putting a nearby creature into a trance. The girl collapses, and the monster becomes aware of your presence, triggering a boss fight. Simply watch this scene to unlock the trophy.

  • Save the little girl.

This is story-related and cannot be missed.

You will earn this in the third Memories of a Lost City chapter (the Resident Evil 2 storyline). In Chapter Two, you’ll encounter a little girl being attacked by zombies. She’s the daughter of an important enemy in the game, and holds an important sample of the virus. After a bit of chasing, which continues into Chapter Three, you will save the girl, whose name is Sherry Birkin, and will stay with you from then on. At this time, you will unlock this trophy.

  • Bring peace to the sad researcher.

This is story-related and cannot be missed.

You will earn this in the final Memories of a Lost City chapter (the Resident Evil 2 storyline).
The ‘researcher’ is William Birkin, a worker for Wesker and Umbrella who, as a last resort, uses the virus to mutate, thinking it’ll ‘save’ him. You’ll encounter him before the final chapter, but the trophy only unlocks when you actually kill him.

Anyway, there isn’t much of a strategy. His health drops fast, so all I recommend is shooting and dodging when necessary. Remember to shoot the cable between the cars at the end of the battle when told to, or else Birkin will cover it again, resulting in you having to shoot him for longer (so he can reveal the cables again). This can be deadly if you're low on health/ammo. Once dead, you’ll finish the Memories of a Lost City scenario and earn the trophy.

  • Slip through the trap without a scratch.

You will earn this in the third Game of Oblivion chapter (the Resident Evil CODE: Veronica storyline).
Alfred Ashford will tell you at one part that he has a ‘game’ ready for you to play, and will give you a getaway plane as a prize if you survive. You’ll have to pass many areas infested with monsters and eventually, you’ll come to the end to one final ‘game’ - the Kill House. It’s a maze where targets will appear and you must shoot them to progress, or else a chunk of your health is taken off. A few zombies will appear in parts too. You must make it through the area without getting a single hit. Getting hit by a zombie or a target will lock out the trophy. You will most likely not earn this naturally, as it is quite frustrating. You'll need a good upgraded handgun and plenty of shotgun shells.

  • Take out the queen ant.

This is story-related and cannot be missed.

You will earn this in the final Game of Oblivion chapter (the Resident Evil CODE: Veronica storyline).
The ‘queen ant’ is Alexia Ashford, the woman who’s brother you’ll become well-acquainted with earlier on in the scenario. As a final showdown, you must defeat Alexia in her mutated form. In the first form, go trigger happy and keep shooting to weaken her. Be careful when she picks you up; this is when it can get very dangerous.

In the second form, watch out for the tentacles, fire and ants, and keep shooting. Once again, if she picks you up, unload all you’ve got, or you’ll suffer massive damage. You'll travel along a nearby catwalk, but that doesn't mean she'll stop attacking. Watch out for the tentacles and fire blasts. Soon enough, you’ll pick up the linear launcher. She’ll grab you, but just shoot her with your new firearm. Now, in the final form, things calm down. Keep whittling away her health, and soon enough you’ll be prompted to shoot her with the linear launcher again. Then, the Game of Oblivion scenario will end, and you’ll earn the trophy.

IMPORTANT NOTE: I highly recommend stocking up on ammo for this fight, as it's easily the hardest boss in the game. On my first try, I had roughly 100 bowgun ammo, 150 submachine gun ammo and 20 shotgun shells, but it was still not enough. You'll find yourself in quite a mess if you don't have enough.

  • Recover a mother's instinct.

This is story-related and cannot be missed. You will unlock this in the fourth Chapter of the Operation Javier scenario.

At the end of the Chapter, you will battle a ferocious and strong monster, sent by Javier. It's a pretty basic fight; not much strategy is required, but I recommend stocking up on submachine gun ammo beforehand. Use a handgun only until you jump on her back. The battle's practically over after that, because at that time in the fight, Manuela will distract the monster with her singing. The monster is then weak and dies with only a few handgun shots. After the fight, a cutscene will trigger where Manuela discovers that it was actually her mother. Manuela feels responsible for so many deaths, including her mother’s. Soon after, when the game reviews the scores, you’ll unlock the trophy.

  • Witness the end of one suffocated by power.

This is story-related and cannot be missed. You will earn this in the fifth Operation Javier chapter.

Javier Hidalgo will transform into a monster and you must fight him as the final boss of the scenario. Primarily, shoot the red joints on his legs. Most of his moves are quick-time events, where you must press a button (usually and , and sometimes, both). When the orbs form from his underbelly, shoot the ones with no blue sphere inside to destroy it, usually destroying others in the process. When a tentacle appears from the ground, shoot the pointed edge for it to flinch and not harm you. Finally, when you go to its front again, unload all your bullets. Even a handgun alone will do. Most enemy attacks are dodged via quick-time events, except for the acid spit, which you simply shoot the head beforehand to counter.

IMPORTANT!: During the fight at certain intervals, Manuela will help, but if you let her lose too much blood, you’ll get the BAD Ending and won’t unlock the secret Sixth Chapter of Operation Javier, required for the Other Side of the Coin trophy.

Once the health bar depletes, Javier will fall, the final cutscene will cue and the credits will roll. During this, the trophy will unlock.

  • Capture a glimpse into the changing mind of a comrade.

To get this trophy, you must finish the secret Sixth and Seventh Chapter of the Operation Javier, where you play as Krauser. You’ll hear his thoughts during gameplay, and will discover why he became an antagonist in Resident Evil 4. These chapters can only be unlocked by getting the GOOD Ending in the Fifth Chapter, when fighting the final boss, Javier Hidalgo. To get the good ending, make sure Manuela doesn’t lose too much blood when she decides to help you fight. If you let her help too much (in other words, take too long to defeat Javier) she dies, resulting in the BAD Ending, which unlocks you nothing. Chapter Six/Seven are basically repeats of Chapter Four/Five, on a higher difficulty. So there should be no problems here.

Check out Bye-Bye, Mommy and Forbidden Power for boss strategies if required.

  • Clear the secret stage.

You’ll unlock the secret stage upon completing all main scenarios of Resident Evil: Darkside Chronicles once, on any difficulty.

The secret stage is - believe it or not - a stage where, instead of being attacked by zombies, you’ll have to face hordes of tofu. For many, this will be a sight of both fear and bewilderment, but long-time players of the franchise (or simply, players of Resident Evil 2) will enjoy this mode thoroughly.

There’s nothing particularly hard with the secret stage; you’ll set out along a path and simply have to reach the end to earn the trophy. I recommend trying your best to not get hit in the earlier section of the Stage, as you face a horde later which can be what ultimately kills players should their health be low. Clear the stage, and earn the trophy.

You have two options when killing the Tofu:
    - Shooting it in the upper area. This renders it unable to attack you, but it can still rush for you.
    - Shooting it in the lower area. This decreases its speed so it can't rush for you, but it can still attack you.

I recommend the latter. When it slows down, it can slow down Tofu behind it as well, giving you a breather to reload.

  • Land at least 5 headshots in a row.

The requirements are simple for this trophy; simply land five headshots in a row. This can be accomplished anywhere in the game, heck, it can be earned in the first five minutes. Get it out of the way whenever you feel like it, because you’ll have a lot of chances to get it. A recommend weapon is the Magnum. You need to do this in quick succession. This cannot be a long-term thing, i.e., killing 4 zombies in one area and the final 5 minutes later, with none in between. A good place to earn this trophy is in Chapter 2 of the Memories of a Lost City scenario. After running through the barricaded area and after killing two Lickers, you'll come to a staircase. Three zombies will be here. Kill them with headshots. The player will turn around quickly and three more zombies will appear. This is your chance to nab the last two, but I must warn you that your partner can shoot the zombies, so you'd better beat them to the punch.

If you don’t get this naturally, you’ll most likely earn it when going for Professional.

  • Clear all chapters on the hardest difficulty with an S rank.

Like in Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles, every Chapter is scored at the end. You can range from an S rank (the highest) to a C rank (the lowest). Just a friendly reminder that the Secret Stage is not required for this trophy. These are different criteria to Umbrella Chronicles, and basically, Darkside Chronicles has more demanding requirements for an S rank:

CLEAR TIME: The amount of time it takes for you to finish the Chapter. This and the third criteria go hand in hand; getting more headshots results in enemies dying faster, meaning your Clear Time is lower, resulting an S rank easier. Killing enemies as fast as possible helps.

ENEMIES ELIMINATED: Basically, your kill count. How many enemies are killed in the Chapter. Pretty self-explanatory, really.

HEADSHOTS: How many headshots you pulled off successfully in the Chapter. Headshots are relatively easy and shouldn’t pose too many problems; from early on in the game, get into a habit of aiming for the head primarily instead of the torso or limb. Once you get into a rhythm, you should pull off headshots naturally.

NO-CONTINUE CLEAR: How many times you had to use a First-Aid Spray to retry. This doesn’t pose much of a problem in the lower difficulties, although it may in Hard Mode. Once you know your enemies and use weapons accordingly, this shouldn’t be too difficult.

NO-DAMAGE CLEAR: By far the most annoying criteria. Clearing a Chapter with no damage will be quite difficult unless you’re quite skilled at on-rail shooters, or else you get lucky. This is only a 'side-criteria' (doesn't affect the score as much as other criteria), so don't worry too much about it.

  • Collect all archives.

Archives are basically files with snippets of information about characters, the story, or enemies. There’s many Archive Files in every scenario; you’ll need to collect every one for the trophy. It’s your choice whether you want to get them in your first playthrough, or spend an extra one after your first solely to collect them. I’d recommend the first option, but it really is your choice. You will also need to collect all costumes, items, and enemy archives. Titles are required. Check out my guide here for further info.
