Attain grip level 3
This can be done as Snake or Raiden and in numerous places throughout the game, mainly wherever is a ledge you can dangle from. While dangling from a ledge press and hold + to have Snake/Raiden perform a pull-up. You will have to do a total of 200 pull-ups to reach grip level 3. You know you reached the next grip level as grip level 2 is yellow and grip level 3 is grey. A successful pull-up is from a dead-hang and holding it until Snake/Raiden's head stops shaking as he pulls himself up. If you release the buttons before then, the pull-up may not be counter. You should also do this with some sort of ground beneath your feet so you don't fall to your death. There's a faster way to level your grip gauge. Hang over a ledge with a ledge below you; press to drop and then quickly press to grab onto the ledge below your original ledge. A ledge catch counts as 10 pullups.
Note: Snake must reach grip level 2 before reaching the holds in the Tanker to get every dog tag.
Much faster way to do this: hang over the side of the railing in the Engine Room on the Tanker chapter. Dispose of all the enemies then hang, drop, and catch the ledge on the very right of the area near the stairs TEN times.
The trophy guide is also wrong, you DO NOT require Grip Level 3 to get all the dog tags, you can have level TWO grip and you'll be able to traverse the ledges in the Holds as long as you have full health.
Finally got around to doing this and I learned a few things. First, I suck horribly at catching my self while falling. Second, grip levels do NOT carry over across playthroughs. After having reached lvl 2 on very easy, I had to start back at lvl 1 on my easy playthrough. Third, saving and/or reloading while working on grip DOES work. After dying 30-40 too many times, I gave up and decided to force myself to do the actual chin-ups one by one. Moments before stabbing myself in the eye from the tedium, I figured I'd try the drop and catch method again, but this time save the chin-ups I had done already. I ran back to the previous area, then back to the engine room, saved, and did a couple drop and catches. I got lvl 2. I saved again, then did 2 drop and catches between more saves. I would
