Introduction
Blokus is a strategy board game that is played by 2-4 players on a 20x20 board. Each player is given a total of 84 game tiles, organized into 21 shapes in each of four colors: blue, yellow, red, and green. The 21 shapes are based on free polyominoes of from one to five squares. Play starts from the Blue player, to Yellow, Red and finally Green in a 4-player game.
Each player occupies a corner of the board and works their way around the board, placing their tiles strategically to gain "space" for placing future tiles and/or blocking opponents from placing theirs. Each new piece played must be placed so that it touches at least one piece of the same color, with only corner-to-corner contact allowed—edges cannot touch. The game ends when no one can make anymore legal moves.
Illustration of the 21 pieces that are shown below. O denotes where another piece of same color may be placed, and X are the areas that cannot be occupied by a piece of the same color.
Step 1: Complete Tournament Mode
There are 6 Tournament Cups available and the AI difficulty gets harder progressively as you complete each cup. Each Cup has 5 challenges of varying games modes and a minimum requirement to pass the challenge. If you're new to the game, try out the tutorial to get a grasp on the basics first. Once you get the hang of it the game will come naturally. It is not difficult at all, even on Hard AI difficulty in later Cups.
Most challenges are fairly easy, requiring you to just accumulate a total number of points. Some challenges that specify "Win" or "Beat" will require you to end the game as the overall winner with highest points among all players, in addition to any other requirements specified. Here's a breakdown of the game types:
Classic Team - This is a 4-player game split into two teams. Every two players on opposite corners of the board will play as a team and attempt to gain control of the board. The combined points total of both team members will be used to determine the winning team.
Classic 2 - This is a 2-player game, where each player controls 2 colors/2-opposing corners of the board and work to gain control of the board.
Duo - This is a 2-player game played on a smaller board. Each player controls a single color and aim to score the most points.
Tips:
1. The strategy to win is simple and remains the same for all game types. Play your 5-tile pieces early on and try to gain as much space as possible while blocking your opponents' advances at the same time. It is tempting to play long vertical/horizontal straight tiles to block your opponents, but keep in mind that these shapes have only 4 corners so they limit your ability to advance further as well.
2. Smaller pieces have great flexibility and can be easily placed and are useful for sneaking into opponent territory via untended spaces, gaining access to more of the board and freeing up pieces that were previously unplayable. Try to leave them until mid-late game when 50-70% of the board has been covered because AI can foresee where you're trying to gain entry and simply block any possibility of placing your big pieces by placing a big piece of their own in your way.
3. A piece with more corners = more options, but its shape may also be open to exploitation by an opponent. This is a game of balance and careful positioning in both attacking and defending. Turning on "highlight legal moves" under options helps you visualize you and your opponent's options and plan ahead.
Step 2: Win 50 online multiplayer matches
Same general strategy applies here if you're trying to play this normally. Otherwise utilize the Boosting Thread. 50 matches is quite alot.
