Dead Souls Difficulty tips

Recommended Posts

Just beat this mode myself, so here's some tips for anyone else trudging through it.

First off, abandon your first save file. Doesn't matter what difficulty level you beat the game at or what your stats were, Dead Souls difficulty can't be premium new gamed into and your dead souls file will be better than whatever you had before.

When you start the game you're going to want 2 million yen. If you got the gamestop pre-order DLC then great, this will be easy. If not, this will be more tedious. First, put together 100k yen. Go to the Ryukage casino and purchase 1k chips. If you have the DLC then you should bring the green gem and both player and banker pieces. Use the green gem on roulette and bet on 0/00. You now have 18k chips. Exit, save (using the player piece only gives you a natural nine, it doesn't prevent the game from ending in a tie), then go back and put 10k chips on player or banker while using the corresponding piece. If you don't have the DLC you're just going to have to put 1k on Player and save every time you win. Either way, when you hit 30k chips turn them in to buy 5 diamonds, a hero's cartridge, and enough platinum plates to get 2 million yen.

Platinum plates can be sold at full price to the pawn shop in Nakamichi alley. Invest 1 million of your newfound wealth on Kamiyama's van, and use the other million for item upgrades. At this point you should head back to Ryukage, go to the gambling den, and just buy the points needed for 4 demon stones and 2 lucky pieces.

Next, buy a Grenade launcher, and always keep 15 grenades on you. Because of the way Zombies mob you in DS mode one grenade shot can usually take out the whole pack, if you're lucky. It's not a sure thing, but it saved my ass in plenty of bad situations. They're also good for Hermits. Your next most important item will be the magnum pistol which should be upgraded to the Tiger ASAP. This will be the gun you use to clear zombies in front of you while running through the quarantine. You do not want to be knocked over, because if you are all the zombies you're running away from will mob you and call you names. Equip and upgrade body armor style armor (breastplate, flak vest, etc). I never found any accessories that were all that great, so use what you like.

Complete every substory for every character. They aren't that difficult, and even the worst (the ones with chase segments) are still possible in DS mode. You're mostly doing this for the XP, but completing all 15 nets you the design for each character's ultimate signature weapon, and you will really want Goda and Kiryu's signature weapons maxed for the ending.

DO NOT do any Subterranea missions in DS mode. DS's zombies make them hellish, and you will die like a dog for no reason. Save them for when you Premium NG into EX Hard difficulty.

When you see a Crybaby decide whether or not you want to fight it. If you do, then kill it first, before anything else. If not, then ignore it and run. If a Crybaby gets off two screams there's a good chance you're going to get killed by zombies.

The only abilities I found useful were Leg Sweep, Break-Away Kick, and Unarmed Expertise. Aside from that your skill points are best spent on inventory slots and weapon/armor expertise.

The Basan boss fight is still bullshit, and is probably impossible if you tried to do it legit. Thankfully, you can exploit. First of, since you've already played through the game and know it's coming, buy a sniper rifle from Kamiyama and upgrade it to max before hand. Bring lots of health too. Once you're fighting him NEVER EVER LEAVE CHILDREN'S PARK. Basan will fly to places you can't reach, and sometimes uses this to heal himself. That's OK. Just shoot him when you can until he summons zombies into the area.

At this point you're going to kill every zombie that runs out of the bathroom while ABSOLUTELY NOT shooting anything on the other side of the fence. Zombies that spawn on the other side of the street will run at you, hit the fence, and stop dead. Eventually the game will spawn the maximum number of zombies and they will all be on the other side of the fence. You can now shoot at Basan whenever you see him while completely ignoring the zombie threat. Let your allies die, too. They'll never do anything useful for you.

After that, if you upgrade Godo and Kiryu's signature weapons to the max, the rest of the game should be no problem.

I can say that what the OP is saying is Truth. After Plantinuming the japanese version of this game, and for what I can say that it is that annoying and Dead Souls mode will annoy you.

I also used the "pause game" quick time event gag where in dead souls mode its harder to pull off them quick time actions. Unpausing the game and hitting the right button right away will help them difficult QTE's

Yup, but the zombies are still DS zombies, so you're better off premium new gaming your DS file into EX Hard, completing that, and doing premium adventure stuff then.

Oh, one thing I forgot to mention, but your reward for clearing dead souls is, in addition to the rocket launcher, 10 million yen. You'll automatically get the armored bank trophy that way, so there's no money grinding required.

And I thought that this game have better trophies than previous... And this evilness mean that this game is 10/10 plat difficulty?

i'm fairly sure fast reload and rapid evade are defiante gets as well. can't wait to get into this mode myself.

Rapid evade is definitely a great help, I'm going through right now and it has saved my ass plenty of times, fast reload I'm not so sure about, as long as you're doing manual reload the times are fast enough on their own, at least for me they have been

I'm done with Akiyama and Majima's acts with all sub stories complete, and it does get much easier, honestly the only thing that's still a pain at this point are the QTEs

I've also found that for me personally a shotgun is way more useful than the tiger pistol, that's pretty much all I used through out both Akiyama and Majima's acts with a few exceptions.

Personally I don't see rapid evade as being terribly useful. It only extends the distance of your roll, it doesn't make you recover faster. Fast reload I thought went without question, but it's so expensive that you'll only have access to it near the end of the game which really diminishes most of its usefulness.

As for Tiger vs a Shotgun, Tiger has the advantages of range, guaranteed 1HKOs, and unlimited ammo. Considering how temperamental DS item boxes will be with ammo (randomized instead of based on your inventory like in every other difficulty) you could run low at a bad time. Also you're never going to be hurting for weapon slots, of which the Tiger takes up only one, but you'll often be hurting for item slots, of which the Shotgun will take up several because of ammo. Tiger + Headtracking is also the best way to kill almost every mutant. Only Monkey Boys and Aggros are easier with the Shotgun.

Oh! bonus tip for people who don't read the intel section: you can kick Monkey Boys! Keeping them knocked down with that makes them a hell of a lot less dangerous.

Ammo has never been a problem for me, I've had more than enough money to keep myself fully stocked and I think maybe once I went below 150 shells. The Tiger may have range, but the shotgun can knock a pile down giving you an opportunity to get the fuck out, or at least have some breathing room. I used the Tiger pretty much only for clean up after thinning the heard with either the shotgun or grenade launcher. I also didn't like the Tiger's low rate of fire, but to each their own I suppose.

Yep, that's what I did as well. Though I actually did everything on Dead Souls (substories, subterranea, all directives and challenges excluding minigames).

It's really only hard at the beginning. It get's much easier later on as you level up and get better stuff.

First post nailed a lot of stuff, but to reiterate:

Increase your item slots (and maybe an accessory slot or two)

Get Leg Sweep, Break Away Kick, Head Tracking (the add on for that as well if you want) and Rapid Reload ASAP

Make some defensive armor, and a Sprinter's Jacket (forget the exact name), let's you run a bit faster. Useful to get a bit of distance when you need it.

Keep a few health items on you (later in the game, just grab Toughness Infinities from Hasegawa)

I always carried an SMG with me (personal preference, also fully upgraded). 200 rounds per inventory slot, and has decent fire power and speed to help tackle large mobs. Also had a Shotgun. Never found the Grenade Launcher to be very useful, too slow. Didn't like the Tiger handgun either, slow, too small of a clip.

As for accessories, I had data from Y3 and Y4, so I popped on the Sugar Daddy Amulet (it's for hostesses, but grants a nice 5 DEF), and often had the Bull's Eye Amulet, and those Bull's Eye Contact Lenses (forget the actual name) equipped as well, though those were my preference. Something with DEF may be more favorable depending on how you play.

if you want a defence item the tiger skin belt gives 4 def 4 fire and 4 explosion. the rookie amulet gives a bigger boost but it says focus on defence instead of offence so i think it reduces your attack power, and if you use the yakuza training gear you might not want anymore drop in attack power.

Maybe it's only me, but I never once used the sniper rifle on the Basan prototype. It's much, much easier just to shoot him down with a SMG or automatic rifle. The tip about the Children's Park still worked like a charm though. One of the easiest bosses. I'd go insane trying to hit it with a sniper rifle though.

Further to this: if you have the appropriate DLC, a hostess with the Grenade Launcher DX can be a lifesaver as a partner.
