Online Trophies: 0. Glitched Trophies: 0. Missable Trophies: 0. INTRODUCTION うみねこのなく頃に~魔女と推理の輪舞曲~ (When the Seagulls Cry ~Rondo of a Witch and a Reasoning~) is the latest from 07th Expansion, a small studio best known for the series ひぐらしのなく頃に (When the Cicadas Cry) which was a hit as an anime, as a light novel, and also as a visual novel. Both Higurashi and Umineko are "murder mysteries" with a few elements of the supernatural thrown into the mix. Here is a brief story summary w/ minor spoilers: [spoiler=story]Umineko no Naku Koro ni takes place primarily in the year 1986, during the time frame of October 4 and October 5 on a small, secluded island named Rokkenjima (六軒島) 10 km around owned and lived on by Kinzo, the head of the wealthy Ushiromiya family. Kinzo is near death, and eight of his family members arrive on the island for the annual family conference, where the adults plan to discuss how Kinzo's assets will be divided once he is dead. Also on the island are three family members who live there, five of Kinzo's servants, and his personal physician. After the eight family members arrive, a typhoon traps them on the island, and shortly after, strange things start to happen and people start dying. The main character of the story is Battler Ushiromiya, son of Kinzo's second son Rudolf. Battler has not been to the annual Ushiromiya conference in six years due to living with his maternal grandparents ever since his mother Asumu died, and even took his mother's maiden name instead of Ushiromiya. When his grandparents died, he went back to living with his father, his second wife Kyrie, and their daughter Ange, his half-sister. Once on the island, Battler once again becomes acquainted with the legend of the golden witch Beatrice who supposedly lives in the naturally dense forest on Rokkenjima. A portrait of her lies in the entrance hall of the Ushiromiya family mansion, and a puzzling epitaph is written below the portrait. Rumor has it on the island that Beatrice gave ten tons of gold to Kinzo in the past to restart the Ushiromiya family after being crippled in the 1923 Great Kantō earthquake. It is said that whoever solves the riddle of the witch's epitaph will receive the gold and be the next successor to the Ushiromiya family. Once the typhoon hits, a ghastly game begins, starting with the murder of six people on the island. If the witch's epitaph cannot be solved, people will continue to die in mysterious deaths, following the outline given by the epitaph itself, until the witch Beatrice ultimately revives. After this comes to pass, Battler is the only one left alive who does not believe in witches or magic, and as such the door to the "golden land" (as stipulated on the epitaph) cannot be opened. Beatrice takes Battler and herself to a parallel dimension, Purgatorio, which is able to oversee events on Rokkenjima. From this point on, Battler and Beatrice are locked in a game of twisted logic where Battler must attempt to explain all of the mysterious events on Rokkenjima from the standpoint that they are caused by a human, and Beatrice attempts to explain everything with witches and magic. One of the recurring motifs is use of the locked room mystery, and several logical arguments are presented to explain the mysteries including the devil's proof, the raven paradox, and Schrödinger's cat. If Beatrice can get Battler to ultimately surrender and accept witches and magic, Beatrice wins. (Taken from Umineko no Naku Koro ni - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia) Amazing characters, stories, and most of all, soundtracks; the music of the ~no Naku Koro ni series is, in a word, incredible. But, I digress... after all, we're here to earn trophies! Unlike a lot of visual novels, there are no "decisions to be made" in Umineko. There are no "branching paths." There are no "multiple endings." It is a "sit back and watch" entertainment experience, and for the most part, the trophies all earn themselves. This is the reason behind its 1/10 Estimated Difficulty; Hannah Montana: The Movie looks like advanced calculus compared to Umineko. That said, let's move on to the Road Map! ROAD MAP Step #1 -- Config Menu At the main menu, choose "Config." This will unlock 設定変更 . Step #2 -- Start a New Episode At the main menu, choose "Start" and then select "Episode 1." Once it has started, ようこそ、六軒島へ will unlock. You can press to auto-advance through all of the scenes. You can "sit back and watch" at this point, or rather, "go to bed" or "go to work." There will be no interaction required 'til the episode ends, and at that point, 黄金の魔女の伝説 will unlock. Return to the main menu. Step #3 -- Tea Party At the main menu, there will be new options. Choose "Tea Party" and then select "Episode 1." You can press to auto-advance through all of the scenes. You can "sit back and watch" at this point, or rather, "go to bed" or "go to work." There will be no interaction required 'til the episode ends, and at that point, Episode 1 お茶会 will unlock. Return to the main menu. Step #4 -- ???? At the main menu, there will be new options. Choose "????" and then select "Episode 1." You can press to auto-advance through all of the scenes. You can "sit back and watch" at this point, or rather, "go to bed" or "go to work." There will be no interaction required 'til the episode ends, and at that point, Episode 1 裏お茶会 will unlock. Return to the main menu. Step #5 -- Characters At the main menu, there will be new options. Choose "Characters" and then select "Episode 1." Press on all of the characters that say "NEW!!" and be aware that 1) There are two or three sets of characters for each episode. Press and to move between the sets, and 2) You also need to check the "dead version" of each character. Press to switch between the "alive version" and "dead version" of each character. When all of the characters (both "alive versions" and "dead versions") have been checked and there are no more "NEW!!" icons, Episode 1 Charactersハンター will unlock. Return to the main menu. Step #6 -- Tips At the main menu, there will be new options. Choose "Tips" and then select "Episode 1." Press on all of the tips that say "NEW!!" When all of the tips have been checked and there are no more "NEW!!" icons, Episode 1 Tipsハンター will unlock. Return to the main menu. Step #7 -- Rinse and Repeat! Go back to Step #2 ~ Step #6 and repeat them for Episode 2, Episode 3, and Episode 4. To reiterate, the order is... A) Episode ---> B) Tea Party ---> C) ???? ---> D) Characters ---> E) Tips ...and at the end of the road, look forward to a new ! Aeliana
Thanks for the guide Now if only I can find this game for under $100 You are most welcome! Still $88.90 at NCSX, $94.90 at Play-Asia... I love ~no Naku Koro ni (not to mention trophies, haha) so it was worth it to me, but it's indeed expensive. I blame the 1 USD = 83.7 Yen exchange rate. This is one of those times that I wish the PS3 allowed installing fansub patches via the interwebz so I can understand these kinda games. Great work nonetheless Aeliana ! I wish that too, so many 'visual novels' have incredible stories that I think a lot of English speakers would enjoy if it were made more accessible to them. Thanks for the compliment, Bread! Thanks for the compliment, Bread! Fortunately people can just buy Umineko for PC in English from Witch Hunt and enjoy it that way. I'm actually playing it right now simul-cast with a laptop with the PC version and the PS3 version running in unison.

Malice_Mizer
True but the PS3 version is superior. Oh! Definitely! I just see playing the PC/PS3 versions simultaneous like the video game equivalent of watching a fan-subbed episode of an anime. Only with a lot more clicking. MainComptonese
Pretty simple ADV title ... no choices to choose and easily adaptive for any novice in the import scene . Though , intermediate skill as for me , is a breeze . Great Road Map guide , too !!! EDIT : Within 90 mins unlocked all trophies except 50 hours & 30K Message Lines . And , don't press START during any of the Staff Roll Credits . Edited February 26, 2011 by MainComptonese

Aeliana
If you don't care about the characters/story, there is a "skip" function that allows you to complete chapters very fast. It doesn't matter if you use it or not though because you still need 50+ hours of Play Time for とある力の積み重ねhttp://www.ps3trophies.org/forum/images/site/icons/trophy_silver.png . Donkey-er
so if you skip everything and get nearly all the trophies, what do you do about the 30.000+ lines and 50 hours? just replaying chapters? in that case skipping is pretty useless...
Shuffle
so if you skip everything and get nearly all the trophies, what do you do about the 30.000+ lines and 50 hours? just replaying chapters? in that case skipping is pretty useless... While I didn't use the skip feature because i'm not a fan of doing that in visual novels unless it's a scene i've already watched(which doesn't happen in visual novels like Umineko's 1st 7 episodes), but I would imagine you can still get the 30k lines trophy. When using Skip in visual novels, it's more like fast-forwarding than actually skipping. So with this it still counts each line that shows up. 50 hour trophy however would really be better watching the episodes regularly. Of course unless you just want the game sit and do nothing for 50 hours. I would imagine that Alchemist made that trophy with the idea that people would earn that trophy by watching the episodes regularly and not by using the Skip button. I think the story took me 60 hours to complete or something like that since I didn't use the Skip feature.
MainComptonese
For the 30K message lines , i used a Hori Turbo pad on the button and let it run it's course and watched the story from Episode 1 ~ 4. Then after, unlocking 30K message lines , left the screen alone on some message line (with Hori Turbo pad being inactive) & just waited for the 50 hours to unlock for the platinum. Remember to not leave on the auto-run , or skipping on . Just , leave the screen & controller alone . Fast-Forwarding / skipping will not count towards your 30K message lines!!! MainComptonese
is there any way to save your progress and take a break? I kinda want to get on the store, but I'm not sure if I can do that... Game auto-saves data , when you reach particular scenes . After , auto-saving you can quit out to main menu & press continue where it auto-saved at . Not sure , what store you are talking about? But , there is no DLC items for umineko on Japanese PSN store . (not yet)
