Section 02. Introduction

The VR Mission Expansion is a throw back to the previous Metal Gear games, where there were a plethora of VR Missions to play with. While not as numerous as the past incarnations, these are in no way less difficult to manage. Much like the original 20 VR Missions in the main game, these have your stats and weapons severely limited to 100% Health, 1 Fuel Cell, and Unique Weapons, unless the mission specifies otherwise.

Section 2.1 - The Mission Types

A new feature to VR Missions in this DLC is the use of a Dwarf Gekko; its features are identical to the one Raiden used during the main game. While it is lower to the ground, it is also a lot less sturdy and plenty weaker. Many of the missions feature using the Dwarf Gekko so do not assume every mission will have you playing as Raiden.

Below is a description of the mission objectives and what they entail;

Control the Dwarf Gekko to the specified waypoint or Arrive at the specified waypoint.

This mission type is simply to get from one place to another. The mission objective will detail you playing as a Dwarf Gekko, otherwise you'll be playing as Raiden.

Arrive at the specified waypoint without being detected.

These are just like the above missions but with the caveat of not triggering an alert. These missions only feature Raiden so you'll have more mobility at your disposal when attempting these.

Incapacitate all cyborgs or Eliminate all enemies via Ninja Kill.

This is a stealth mission where you'll have to defeat all enemies without being detected. The way to differentiate between the Dwarf Gekko and Raiden is the Gekko can only incapacitate, whereas Raiden has the Ninja Kill. With either character the method is the same, get behind or above an unaware enemy and use the :circle: button to neutralize them.

Destroy all the targets.

This is a Raiden only type mission as the Dwarf Gekko lacks the ability to destroy enemies. As the mission objective says, simply destroy every enemy to clear the mission.

Eliminate all enemies using the supplied sub-weapon.

This is a Raiden only type mission as the Dwarf Gekko cannot use sub-weapons. As said you need to destroy all the enemies and while it may not sound that difficult some missions can be. Some missions have aggressive enemies attacking you but with your primary weapon sealed, you cannot parry or just-defend; so your only defense is to jump or run away from the enemies.

Eliminate all enemies via Zandatsu.

This is a Raiden only type mission as the Dwarf Gekko cannot Zandatsu. While this mission type sounds easy enough it can be one of the more frustrating mission types. This is due to the number of mines placed around the area and the enemy's ability to walk off the platforms; both are ways for the enemy to kill themselves. If they die from something other than a Zandatsu, you'll fail the mission.

Section 2.2 - The AI problem

There is a problem with the AI in this DLC which can make some missions extremely difficult. Many of the missions have a dark filter to simulate it being night time, for some reason many of the cyborgs get enhanced detection in these missions. The enhanced detection isn't stable as they only seem to detect you at random times, so be wary of the guards.

There is also a problem with enemies killing themselves. While this doesn't seem like much of a problem, it is when the mission calls for every enemy to die by a Zandatsu. In these VR Missions there are numerous mines in most of the missions that kill on contact. There are also no walls to hold you back from falling off platforms. Both of these can severely hinder your progress as enemies will routinely kill themselves and ruin your mission attempts.

As with falling there are also a few problems built into the DLC. Raiden can fall numerous times and it won't kill him, just waste time. While specific missions will allow enemies to fall and have you fail your mission, other missions will have invisible walls preventing the enemies from falling to their death. Whether this is a flaw or intentional isn't known, but it's a glaring problem when you're trying alternative combat methods.

Section 03. Walkthrough

Unlike the main game VR Missions, you do not have to find any VR Terminals in the game to have access to these missions. After downloading and installing the DLC, the VR Missions tab on the Main Menu should be red; identifying it as having the DLC available to play. Go into the VR Missions and scroll down past the original 20 Missions to reach the new 30. From here you can perform the missions in any order you want, so go ahead and choose. There are two ways to attempt this DLC so I will address both of them below. Just remember that you will have to earn 1st place marks in all 30 of the missions to earn the two trophies. You're free to play however you want, just stay focused and don't give up.

Section 3.1 - Play through, go back

This style of play is where you play the missions through, not concerning yourself with the time you originally set. You'll just want to feel how each mission is before deciding which ones to focus on. You're free to jump around and go as you wish. Playing like this can result in you taking longer to earn the trophies as you'll be dividing your efforts instead of building your skill in a specific mission. With this play style you're bound to earn DL-VR Master well before you earn Hero of the Metaverse. Either style is fine as long as you get both trophies in the end.

Section 3.2 - Play it until you get it

This style of play is where you play a single mission over and over until you earn top marks in that mission. Despite offering the faster acquisition of trophies, this play style can often result in raging or burnout, so if this is your style of play I recommend taking a break every now and then during your attempts. With this play style you'll probably earn DL-VR Master shortly before Hero of the Metaverse. Either style is fine as long as you get both trophies in the end.

VR Missions

VR DLC Mission 001

Goal: Control the Dwarf Gekko to the specified waypoint

Time: 00:15.00

Enemies: Mines x5

Spoiler

Tactics

This mission has your Gekko on narrow walkways with a few floating mines in your way. While 15 seconds seems like a decent time, you don't have enough time to run over there. The Gekko can jump much faster than it can run and you can use jumping to cut corners to save even more time. It may take a few attempts to get used to the platforming on narrow walkways but overall this mission isn't too difficult to handle. Keep in mind the Gekko jumps even better if you're holding :r1: when you jump.

VR DLC Mission 002

Goal: Incapacitate all cyborgs

Time: 01:20.00

Enemies: Cyborg x8

Spoiler

Tactics

This mission is a recreation of part of R-02 in the main game, granted there are differences. To start off, move forward and take out the three cyborgs along the way. When you reach the bend in the path, use one of the blocks to get up on the rail and use the rail to jump onto the catwalk. Take out the two cyborgs on the catwalk. Now use the rail to work your way to the high point in the mission where a lone cyborg is. With that cyborg down you can drop down the the floor and take out the remaining two cyborgs.

VR DLC Mission 003

Goal: Control the Dwarf Gekko to the specified waypoint

Time: 00:25.00

Enemies: Mines x8, APC's (INFINITE)

Spoiler

Tactics

This mission is interesting as it's based off the game 'Frogger'. You start off with having to run across a two lane road with APC's going both ways. After that you need to jump on some platforms to yet another roadway with two lanes of APC traffic. From there you need to drop down to a lower road where you'll be running against traffic. Jump onto or over the APC's as they come at you and when you make it to the hole in the ground drop down to finish the mission. One thing to keep in mind is if the APC's hit you they will kill you, so when you jump at them be sure you'll land on top of them, or you will die. Also remember that jumping is a lot faster than running so be sure to jump a lot to make the time requirement.

VR DLC Mission 004

Goal: Destroy all the targets

Time: 00:55.00

Enemies: Cyborg Target x35, Metal Gear RAY Target x1

Spoiler

Tactics

This mission is a straightforward turret mission, so there's very little difficulty here. Get on the turret and take out the two targets in front of you. The next wave of targets will appear between the two big pillars, there will be six of them appearing left to right. The next wave will be exactly the same but instead of left to right, they'll appear right to left. The next wave of targets will have four of them appear somewhat behind the barricades and with bombs between them; either fire on them directly or use the bombs to destroy them. The next set of targets will be simply two targets, one appearing in front of the left and right barricade. The next wave of targets will have one target coming from each pillar and stopping in the middle before heading back to the pillar. The next wave of targets will be six targets simply spread out between the two pillars. The next wave of targets will have seven and appear on the higher platform and atop the pillars. The final spawn will be a Metal Gear RAY target that will take a lot of shooting to put down. While it's up, mines will spawn in and slowly drift towards you; shoot them down to help damage RAY and save yourself from damage. Once RAY is down the mission is over.

VR DLC Mission 005

Goal: Control the Dwarf Gekko to the specified waypoint

Time: 00:40.00

Enemies: Cyborg x3, Gekko x1

Spoiler

Tactics

This mission is very straightforward as it's a 2D side-scroller. All you need to do with the Dwarf Gekko is run right, make a few jumps and get past a Gekko. There are a few cyborgs in the mission but they're on other platforms and will shoot at you as you run by. Since it's just a waypoint mission, just move quickly and reach the end.

VR DLC Mission 006

Goal: Destroy all the targets

Time: 01:40.00

Enemies: Dwarf Gekko x27, Humanoid Gekko x5

Spoiler

Tactics

This mission can be a little frustrating and may take a few tries to learn. From the start you should pick up the RPG's and use them to kill eleven Dwarf Gekkos that are atop several of the pillars. Once they're all down, drop down to the pathway between the two right-most pillars and use the staff to take out the line of sixteen Dwarf Gekkos. Once they're dealt with, drop down to the bottom level and destroy the five Humanoid Gekkos to finish the mission. The last wave of enemies can be hard to finish off but are easy to deal with if you have any RPG's left over from the first wave.

VR DLC Mission 007

Goal: Eliminate all enemies using the supplied sub-weapon

Time: 04:00.00

Enemies: Dward Gekko x50, Gekko x3

Spoiler

Tactics

This mission has various waves of Dwarf Gekkos before coming in with three regular Gekkos; the worst part is all you have available to you is the Frag Grenade sub-weapon. The first wave is fourteen Dwarf Gekkos that are in front of you and to your sides, all within eye-sight of where you are at the start. The second wave is twenty Dwarf Gekkos that appear all over the place; they are on both platforms, both sides of the ground, and the middle ledge. Use your AR Mode to find where they are if you're having trouble locating them. The third wave is sixteen Dwarf Gekkos that come in two groups. One group of eight is running single-file along the middle ledge while the other group is running single-file along the outer wall of the bottom floor. The last wave is three Gekkos that patrol the upper ledges, one of which sticks to the highest middle ledge part. To kill these with Grenades it's easiest to wait until they get near one of the mines and use the grenade to detonate the mine so it'll kill the Gekko. For the Gekko on the high-middle part you have to get really close to the wall and throw the grenade almost straight up to kill it.

VR DLC Mission 008

Goal: Incapacitate all cyborgs

Time: 01:10.00

Enemies: Cyborgs x5, Cameras x10, Mines x20+

Spoiler

Tactics

This mission isn't too difficult once you know where all your targets are. From the start jump onto the small ledge next to the highest area and wait for the cyborg on the walkway to turn his back before jumping up and incapacitating him. From there watch the cyborg near the wall and get behind him and disable him as well. From here go to the bridge where the first cyborg was and drop down onto the pillar with a cyborg and take him out. From here walk along the rails to the wall and drop down to another pillar with a cyborg on it and take him out. From here you can drop down to the floor and jump onto the platform with the final cyborg to take him out and finish this mission.

VR DLC Mission 009

Goal: Destroy all the targets

Time: 02:40.00

Enemies: Cyborg x6, Hammerhead x4, Slides x81

Spoiler

Tactics

This is another turret mission and while they do give you access to Stinger missiles, I prefer the turret. From the start you get multiple waves of Slides appearing. It's easy to take them down by aiming the turret in front of their flight path and then letting them fly into your firing zone. After destroying fifty-seven slides two Cyborgs will appear and start firing on you. Once the Cyborgs are down twenty-four more Slides will spawn and after shooting them down you'll have to fight off four Cyborgs and four Hammerheads. Focus on the Hammerheads as they do more damage and when all the enemies are down this mission is over.

VR DLC Mission 010

Goal: Eliminate all enemies via Zandatsu

Time: 03:30.00

Enemies: Cyborg x19, Custom Cyborg x1

Spoiler

Tactics

This mission can take a few attempts to get the 1st place time. The big problem is the multiple mines scattered around the area and how enemies can die via them, so you must be careful when fighting. From the start run forward and ninja-run up the wall to your right to reach the platform they're on, zandatsu all three of them. When the next group spawns zandatsu the three of them; now look for a set of stairs going up, to the right of them is a set of stairs going down and this is where the next spawn will appear. One will be at the top of the stairs, the other will be at the bottom of the stairs. The next two spawns of enemies will spawn on the lower level so don't be up the stairs; each spawn will have 3 cyborgs each. The second spawn will have a cyborg on the middle level so be sure to head up the stairs to finish him. The next line of enemies will spawn on the ledge of the highest level and in a line, so follow the line until the last cyborg is dead. On a single platform surrounded by mines you'll see a Custom Cyborg, use the dive kick or sai to get its attention as it won't turn aggressive until you attack. You'll have to wear its defense down and once you finish him off this mission is over.

VR DLC Mission 011

Goal: Control the Dwarf Gekko to the specified waypoint.

Time: 00:20.00

Enemies: Slides x8

Spoiler

Tactics

This mission is very easy but can be a bit of trouble if you get hit by the Slides. Just rush along the path as fast as possible and hope the Slides' attacks don't hit you. You can't take much time to dodge their attacks as the platforms will disappear shortly after you step on them. Remember that the Dwarf Gekko can jump faster than it can run.

VR DLC Mission 012

Goal: Destroy all the targets.

Time: 01:40.00

Enemies: Dwarf Gekko x10

Spoiler

Tactics

This mission can be a pain to learn if you can't find a decent route to take. From the start move forward and turn right, jump over the mines and kill the Dwarf Gekko. Drop down into the lower level and kill the Dwarf Gekko before turning around and ninja-running back up to the mid level. Run past the two mines and drop down to the next block and destroy the third Dwarf Gekko. Continue down the path past the next set of mines, turn right and run up the platform to kill the fourth Dwarf Gekko. Return back up to where you started and go down the path you have yet to go and drop down to the lower level to your right. On the bottom level run away from the mines into a dead end to kill the fifth Dwarf Gekko. Run back the way you came and ninja-run over the first level into a new low area. There are two Dwarf Gekkos down here, one on the path to the left and the other at the end of the path. Return the way you came and get back onto the level where you originally started, turn right and kill the 8th Dwarf Gekko. Don't take the left turn but go straight to kill the 9th Dwarf Gekko. Now take the left turn and when the path splits go right and kill the final Dwarf Gekko at the end to finish the mission.

VR DLC Mission 013

Goal: Destroy all the targets.

Time: 02:30.00

Enemies: Cyborg Targets x88

Spoiler

Tactics

This mission has targets and mines so be careful when attacking as you don't want to hit a mine. On the starting platform kill the 10 targets and then jump onto the small platforms and destroy the targets as they appear, until you reach the outer area and destroy the rest of the targets. Move up to the top of the area and follow the path of targets as they appear and don't run too far ahead until the targets appear so you don't waste time backtracking. Once you reach the platform with the RPG's one final wave of targets will appear with a series of mines, shoot the mines to destroy the targets. Now stand on an RPG spawn and turn right to look at various target spawns, each spawn has a mine so shoot them all to finish the mission.

VR DLC Mission 014

Goal: Eliminate all enemies.

Time: 03:00.00

Enemies: Cyborg x6, Custom Cyborg x6, Heavy Cyborg x3, Gekko x2, Fenrir x2

Spoiler

Tactics

This mission requires practice and a bit of luck as the only way to kill enemies is by luring them into mines. This isn't as difficult as it sounds as the AI is thick enough to take the shortest route to you and walk into the mines. On the first tier of the level you'll have to face three waves; the first is three Custom Cyborgs, the second is three Cyborgs, and the third is three Heavy Cyborgs. When all three waves are down the path to the second tier is open, go up to the next tier. The first wave on the second tier is three Cyborgs, the second wave is three Custom Cyborgs, the third and final wave is two Gekkos and two Fenrirs. The second tier is somewhat more difficult as many mines move which can hurt you, but can also bait enemies. The most difficult part is staying safe during the last wave as you cannot parry any attacks.

VR DLC Mission 015

Goal: Incapacitate all cyborgs

Time: 01:45.00

Enemies: APC (INFINITE)

Spoiler

Tactics

This mission is not easy as some cyborgs gain super detection and can sometimes see you through barriers, on top of finding what route works best for you, this mission can cause problems. From the start turn left and get on the back of the cyborg on the platform to incapacitate him. Move back towards the wall and incapacitate the cyborg patrolling along the wall. From here jump over the barriers and incapacitate the guard on the platform in front of the very high platform. From here move towards the large platform and wait for an APC to drive past it and jump on, wait on the APC until it reaches the platform at the edge of the wall and jump onto that platform. From there jump onto the higher platform and incapacitate the cyborg. From here move to the far side of the platform and jump down towards a cyborg and incapacitate him. From here there are three cyborgs left; take out the two on the ground and then finish the mission with the cyborg on the platform.

VR DLC Mission 016

Goal: Eliminate all enemies via Ninja Kill.

Time: 01:00.00

Enemies: Cyborg x1, Custom Cyborg x5, Gekko x1

Spoiler

Tactics

This mission is very structured but can be difficult to figure out. There are 6 levels of this building frame with enemies on each level. From the start run forward and Ninja Kill the cyborg below you, jump from there and kill the next cyborg below you, and do the same again for a third kill. Now instead of ninja killing your way down, drop down and assassinate the Custom Cyborg from behind before ninja killing the Gekko at the bottom. From here you can jump off to be teleported to the top or you can wait for an elevator. If you take the elevator get off on the fourth floor and assassinate the Custom Cyborg before ninja killing the final Custom Cyborg below you to finish the mission.

VR DLC Mission 017

Goal: Arrive at the specified waypoint.

Time: 00:40.00

Enemies: N/A

Spoiler

Tactics

This mission isn't that bad as long as you know the path, but even if you don't the game will show you the way with cyborg targets. From the start move forward and take the left at the split then ninja run up two levels. Turn left and take the drop along the path and follow it, then ninja run up one level before turning left and running up another level. As the path drops down ninja run up and turn left again before running up another level. Follow the path and take the right at the split, jump over the hole and then turn left to drop down to the lower level. Continue down the path and take the left at the split then follow the path to the end.

VR DLC Mission 018

Goal: Control the Dwarf Gekko to the specified waypoint.

Time: 00:40.00

Enemies: Cyborg x13, GRAD x2 Camera Turret x20

Spoiler

Tactics

This mission is only difficult at two spots; in the middle and at the end. To start off, you should never stop moving, if you stop moving you're easy to kill. From the start of the mission turn the corner to enter a room full of Camera Turrets and Mines, avoid them and wind your way around a few corners until you reach an open area. As you move forward cyborgs will spawn and shoot at you, so run past them. In the next area, you'll have to go through 3 small openings. The last opening will have three RPG cyborgs spawn on the other side, bait them into shooting before attempting to get through the opening. Run past them and you're almost done, cyborgs and GRAD's will then spawn in on the tiered platforms you have to climb. The GRAD's are the dangerous enemies, so stick to the walls before jumping so the GRAD's can't hit you while you climb. Get past the enemies and the mines to finish the mission.

VR DLC Mission 019

Goal: Eliminate all enemies.

Time: 07:00.00

Enemies: Cyborg x18, Custom Cyborg x3, Heavy Cyborg x2, Dwarf Gekko x11, Mastiff x2,

Spoiler

Tactics

This mission is fun as it's a throwback to 2D side scrolling beat'em ups. The problem is Raiden does not have his sword, only his hands and feet. While you can parry, you take chip damage; however, chip damage cannot kill you if you're able to constantly parry enemy attacks. You can also pick up nanorepair paste from enemies and equip them to save yourself from a fatal hit. From the start the first enemy spawn will be six cyborgs. After they're dead move forward to the second spawn which is four cyborgs. When they're dead move forward to the third spawn which is two cyborgs, one custom cyborg and one heavy cyborg. When they're defeated move forward to the fourth spawn which is eleven Dwarf Gekkos. Once they're down move forward to the fifth spawn which is four cyborgs and one Mastiff. Once this wave is down move on to the final wave which is two Cyborgs, two Custom Cyborgs, one Mastiff and one Heavy Cyborg. Defeat them to finish the mission. When fighting mixed groups of enemies I found killing the weaker enemies first helps as they're easier to remove and this gives you more space and the enemies can't pressure you as much.

VR DLC Mission 020

Goal: Eliminate all enemies.

Time: 03:00.00

Enemies: Cyborg x2, Custom Cyborg x1, Raptor x2,

Spoiler

Tactics

This mission is short on time and the obvious tactic doesn't actually work. The mission is made of three phases with each phase having the platform you're on shrink in size. The obvious conclusion would be to knock the enemies off, but you can't, they can however knock you off. The first phase is two cyborgs and one custom cyborg. The second wave consists of two Raptors, luckily they're not that aggressive so they're not too big of a threat. The final wave is two Dwarf Gekkos and a Heavy Cyborg. Simply finish off all the waves to finish the mission.

VR DLC Mission 021

Goal: Incapacitate all cyborgs.

Time: 02:00.00

Enemies: Cyborg x11

Spoiler

Tactics

This mission can be a pain as the enemies have super detection and can ruin your attempt at random times. From the start jump down and take out the three cyborgs in front of you. Approach the wall and when the cyborg isn't looking your way, jump through the opening and incapacitate him. When he's down, watch for a pair of feet through the two openings and when they're facing away simply run through and take him out. In the next area simply do the same thing, watch the cyborg and when he's not looking your way go through the opening and take him out. When you approach the big block with two paths, watch for a patrolling cyborg and go through the pathway and take him out when he's not looking. Now there are two cyborgs on raised platforms who will be able to see you, so stay hidden and make sure they're not looking at each other before you take them out. As you move forward be wary of this corner and take out the cyborg when his back is to you. Move further down the path and when you're on a raised area there is one more cyborg somewhere below you; take him out when his back is turned to finish this mission.

VR DLC Mission 022

Goal: Eliminate all enemies via Ninja Kill.

Time: 01:30.00

Enemies: Cyborg x9

Spoiler

Tactics

This mission can be a real pain as the enemies have super detection at times and there are a massive amount of mines separating the area. From the start of the mission, turn right and ninja run up the wall, then jump over to the platform with the cyborg and assassinate him. Jump over to the bigger platform and ninja kill the cyborg below you. Turn left, dodge the mine and assassinate the cyborg in the small area. Now turn left and again ninja run up the walls. Now turn right and stay along the outside until you see another cyborg on your level, jump over to his platform and assassinate him. Turn right and instead of jumping off the platform, assassinate the cyborg below you. From here there are 4 cyborgs left all on the lower level, use AR Vision and take them out in whatever order you want. I can't give specifics as depending on how long it took you to get here, they can be in different locations. Just remember to use AR Vision to see everything.

VR DLC Mission 023

Goal: Eliminate all enemies.

Time: 03:30.00

Enemies: Dwarf Gekko x11, Cyborg x7, Heavy Cyborg x2, Gekko x1, Raptor x2

Spoiler

Tactics

This mission can be a little tricky as you do not have enough time to take out all of the powerful enemies in the mission. The lesser enemies can be destroyed quickly, but the more powerful enemies will need to be destroyed with mines. At the start rush to the three cyborgs you see and take them out with Blade Mode, then bait the two Heavies into mines. When they're dead a spawn of five Dwarf Gekkos will appear below where you started so quickly take them out. When they're dead two Raptors will spawn, use the mines to dispose of them; you will have to destroy the Dwarf Gekkos they leave behind. With them dead, four Dwarf Gekkos and one regular Gekko will warp in; use the mines to handle the regular Gekko. Before the next spawn gets in, ninja run up the walls at the back of the area to be ready for the two RPG cyborgs that will appear; along with these two will be two more cyborgs and a GRAD. You won't be able to use mines against the GRAD so handle the two RPG cyborgs and then focus on the GRAD. Finish off this spawn and the mission will be over.

VR DLC Mission 024

Goal: Arrive at the specified waypoint.

Time: 00:25.00

Enemies: N/A

Spoiler

Tactics

This mission is very short but very complex as the area is loaded with mines, most of them move in different patterns as well. Move forward and turn left, go straight through the next room via the left side. In the next room turn right but go the long way by running along the left side of the room. In the next room run straight and in the next room turn left to the next room. In the next room you'll want to turn left but you'll want to go the long way by hugging the right wall. Get to the next room and hit the exit to finish the mission. While these directions sound simple, I can't elaborate on all the methods to avoid the mines, so it's not as easy as it first appears.

VR DLC Mission 025

Goal: Arrive at the specified waypoint without being detected.

Time: 01:40.00

Enemies: Cyborg x12

Spoiler

Tactics

This mission is very difficult, especially to learn, most of it is due to some hard jumps and the enemies having super detection abilities. From the start of the mission move forward but to the left of the pillar to assassinate the cyborg. Now jump across the gap and ninja run onto the pillar and assassinate the cyborg below you. Turn right and run up the next pillar to assassinate the cyborg below you. Move forward then turn right, hop across the two gaps and when you're on the next platform head straight and make a difficult jump around the back of the pillar, then assassinate the cyborg right in front of you. Move forward staying on the left side of the pillar, hop across the gap then move to the right side of the pillar, circle around it and assassinate the next cyborg. Turn around and jump over the mines to assassinate the next cyborg. Turn left and assassinate one more cyborg before another jumping section with two sets of mines moving towards you. Make it past them and on the next platform assassinate the cyborg on the highest part. Turn left and follow the path, use AR Mode to check for the cyborg before you jump up to his level and assassinate him. Turn left and go down the path, stay on the high ground and assassinate one more cyborg before climbing up the path to the finish.

While it's merely a waypoint mission, many of the cyborgs are positioned to spot you regardless of how sneaky you act, so it's best to kill them as you move.

VR DLC Mission 026

Goal: Incapacitate all cyborgs.

Time: 01:30.00

Enemies: Cyborg x7, Gekko x7

Spoiler

Tactics

This mission isn't too difficult, while enemies still have their super detection it isn't that hard to finish when you know where all the enemies are. From the start of the mission move forward and get the cyborg right in front of you. From there turn left and disable the cyborg in front of the drop off. From there drop down to the lower level and turn left to find another cyborg, dispose of him. From there turn right twice to enter a secluded area, there's a cyborg patrolling around the pillar so take him out. Check your corners as you go further into the area as a cyborg patrols very close to them, when his back is turned you should take him out. Past the cyborg you'll run into a Gekko, they're blind in their immediate front so wait for it to get close before you run around it. Past the Gekko is the final Cyborg so take him out to finish the mission.

VR DLC Mission 027

Goal: Eliminate all enemies via Zandatsu.

Time: 08:00.00

Enemies: Cyborg x15, Gekko x1, Mastiff x3, Fenrir x4

Spoiler

Tactics

This can be one of the most difficult missions in the game, not only due to the enemy groups but the later groups of enemies love walking off the platform and killing themselves, thus making you fail the mission. When you're dealing with the later groups, you need to act with speed. From the start of the mission simply zandatsu all the cyborgs in the area to open up the second area. Once there zandatsu the three cyborgs until the group of three Mastiffs and one Gekko run in. This isn't Revengeance Mode so while a just-defend is useful for taking them out, it requires several hits to weaken the enemies enough. You can also try baiting the Gekko into charging so you can remove it quickly and easily. The best time to Zandatsu a Mastiff is when it's fully weakened; it will kneel down and hold still, this also puts its weak spot easily at your level and is the best time to cut it. Once they're gone the next area will open up and two cyborgs will spawn on the bridge. You need to kill these two quickly as they will purposefully walk off the bridge and force you to fail. Once they're dead move down to the lower area and kill the three RPG cyborgs on the upper level. Be sure to bait them into shooting before moving in for the kill, you don't want one cyborg being hit by a rocket and getting knocked off the platform. Once they're down the final wave of 4 Fenrirs will spawn. Believe it or not, these enemies will kill themselves as well so fight quickly and dispose of them to finish the mission. There is no best time to hit a Fenrir as even when fully weakened they don't stagger well unless you get them with a hard knockdown; something like double tapping forward then :triangle: is good for a hard knockdown.

VR DLC Mission 028

Goal: Eliminate all enemies using the supplied sub-weapon.

Time: 07:00.00

Enemies: Cyborg x7, Custom Cyborg x2, Heavy Cyborg x2, Dwarf Gekko x7, Raptor x3, GRAD x2

[spoiler=VRDLC028]

Spoiler

Tactics

This mission can be hard as you will face numerous aggressive enemies, but if you can get past the first wave you should have very little problems with the remaining enemies. The only sub-weapon you have access to is the Stinger Missile and while it's a good weapon, it does have long animation times and without access to your parry you can easily get overwhelmed. Right at the start you're up against three Raptors, I advise gathering some Stingers then climbing one of the pillars and shooting from there. The Raptors will be able to hit you, but not as easily. Each Raptor takes about 5 missiles to put down and you should remember Raptors berserk when they see one another die, so be wary about the remaining Raptors. When the Raptors are down you will be attacked by a myriad of cyborg types. Luckily you can outrun them better than you can the Raptors and they can get hung up on the barricades and pillars, this allows one missile to hit numerous Cyborgs so take advantage of it. When all the Cyborgs are down the final wave will spawn. The final spawn is seven Dwarf Gekkos and two GRAD units. The best way to handle this spawn is to ignore the Gekkos until one of the GRAD units are down. The best way to combat the GRADs is to use hit and run tactics. Put a pillar between you and the GRADs, peek out and fire a missile or two at them before ducking back into cover. Sometimes after taking enough hits the GRAD will stagger, use this time to unload all the missiles you have into it. Once one of them is down you can focus on the Gekkos with little trouble and then finish off the remaining GRAD to finish the mission.

VR DLC Mission 029

Goal: Arrive at the specified waypoint without being detected.

Time: 00:50.00

Enemies: Cyborg x6

Spoiler

Tactics

This mission isn't too difficult, luckily it's very short as well. From the start of the mission move forward and turn left onto the stairs, climb the stairs then drop back down to the lower level. Run to the back left corner and ninja run up to the higher level, now turn left and assassinate the cyborg there. Use AR Mode to look left to see the cyborg and where the mines are. When the cyborg isn't looking, jump over to the middle platform and then rush the cyborg and assassinate him. From there turn left and head towards the goal, use AR Mode to make sure the final cyborg isn't looking at you and run past him to finish the mission.

VR DLC Mission 030

Goal: Eliminate all enemies.

Time: 15:00.00

Enemies: Dwarf Gekko x26, Cyborg x11, Custom Cyborg x4, Heavy Cyborg x1, Slides x4, Hammerhead x1, Gekko x3, Mastiff x2, Fenrir x3, Vodomjerka x2, GRAD x2

[spoiler=VRDLC030]

Spoiler

Tactics

While this mission isn't hard per se, it is very long, but luckily you can kill the enemies however you want. There are numerous waves so I will be addressing this mission on a wave by wave basis.

Wave 1

There are a total of eleven Cyborgs in this wave, while there are only seven at first, killing the RPG Cyborgs will make more spawn in. Simply handle them however you wish.

Wave 2

There are four Custom Cyborgs and one Heavy Cyborg in this wave. Luckily they're not as aggressive as in other missions but can still be a pain. I'd recommend using the staff or going for just-defends to take out most of the customs and then focusing on the Heavy when he's alone. After this wave seven Dwarf Gekkos will spawn in, handle them.

Wave 3

At the start it will be one Raptor and eight of Dwarf Gekkos and then two Mastiffs. The Mastiffs will spawn when you've destroyed most of the Dwarf Gekkos and/or when the Raptor is destroyed. So if you're not good at fighting Mastiffs in groups, you can control when they spawn.

Wave 4

At this wave you'll have to deal with three Gekkos and four Dwarf Gekkos. The Dwarf Gekkos are armed with guns that can stagger you if you take enough shots. I still recommend baiting the Gekkos into charging so you can take care of them with a quick execution. After this spawn seven more Dwarf Gekkos will spawn in, so handle them.

Wave 5

I recommend using the Sai for this spawn as you'll be facing four Slides, a Hammerhead and two Vodomjerkas; all of which are very annoying but can be stunned with the Sai. The wave starts with just the Hammerhead and the Slides, the Vodomjerkas will spawn in as the Hammerhead or set of two Slides die. So choose your battle accordingly. I advise leaving the Hammerhead for last as it's the least annoying of all the enemies in this spawn.

Wave 6

This is the final wave and consists of 3 Fenrir and 2 GRAD units. Believe it or not this is a relatively simple wave compared to the last. Simply get in a GRAD's face and don't leave. The GRAD's body will block most incoming attacks from that direction while the enemies will rarely attack you from off camera. So the first thing you should do is wail on the GRADs until they're both down and then you can focus on the Fenrir units. When all the enemies in this wave go down the mission is over. I also recommend using Zandatsu as often as possible since it not only keeps you alive, but gives you invincibility frames during enemy attacks.

Nice guide as always, Khea :) Mission 27 was bloody annoying lol

Thank you and yes it is. It was the mission I had the most problems with and unfortunately it was because enemies kept killing themselves. It drove me bat shit crazy, especially when there was a Fenrir or two who fell to their death. That was rage inducing.

Glad to see i wasnt the only one raging a lot in this mission lol, the red box that shows when you activate blade mode kept disappearing or showing the :circle: prompt even when I sliced the box properly and the rpg crybogs kept walking back and killing themselves AND the fenrirs think it's funny to jump over me whilst i'm attacking them into the void causing me to fail the mission *sigh*

Rant over. Thanks for your guides again, i'm not sure how i would've completed these missions without them

A great tip to avoid the Fenrirs from jumping off the ledges/gaps is when you get to the two machine gun cyborgs instead of zandatsu'ing them run past them and get to the rocket launcher guys without them hitting the machinegunners. Zandatsu kill the three of them then fall off the ledge. From here the machine gunners should run all the way back to where you respawn (back in the first area) and you can take them out there. This will make the Fenrirs spawn in that same area and they won't be able to jump off any ledges or gaps since its an inclosed area. This has worked for quite a few others too so its a viable tactic if people are still having issues with the suicide Fenrirs.

Another helpful & well done guide Khea

I agree mission 27 is the one i needed the most attempts to complete, however for me & my play style, i found that using the pincers instead of the staff worked better for waves 3 & 5, because the pincers do quite alot of damage & have a wide attack radius they take out the mastiffs & fenrirs more quickly making the time requirement much easier to meet, i think each fenrir only took 3 or 4 consecutive hits & a QTE to put down.

Just sharing my experience incase anyones stuck on 27 & wants to try this suggestion ;)

I don't really recommend any weapons, I'm just most comfortable with the staff. It's weak, but I like it because it has a wide arc and is quick, where the pincers also have a wide arc but they're sluggish.

Thanks for the trophy guide and videos. Saved me a lot of trial and error time on the reach x waypoint, ninja kill and incapacitate missions. It took me about an hour each to do Mission 27 and 30 though. I absolutely hated mission 27. The only reason it took so long was because I kept missing Zandatsus (especially on the Mastiffs as the red square seems to disappear if you miss 2 or 3 times on them and I fought them all at once to save time so it was tough to get a perfect opportunity to take one out with blade mode) and a couple of times I got the Zandatsu prompt extremely late and the mission failed me anyway even though I had the press circle prompt.. what the hell? Also, had a rocket guy kill a machine gun cyborg once. :2walls: What a piece of shit mission!

I failed mission 30 by a few seconds the first time I beat it, because the last gekko UG in wave 4 would not cooperate at all. It wasted probably 2 minutes of my time just running around trying to kick me. It would not charge or stomp and I couldn't trap it against a wall to counter parry it either. I hate the AI on those things.

These were mostly pretty easy, there were several that took me an hour or so to get done, but the only real problem was VR Mission 27. As others have already alluded to, it's extremely cheap and poorly designed, and almost every aspect of the mission seems to meld together to form the perfect shitstorm of frustration:

  • The very inconsistent Zandatsu mechanic.
  • Darkness, so you can't see enemies well and can't see where you're swinging your sword for the Zandatsus.
  • Length, so if you fuck up you're wasting 10 minutes or more, and the first wave is redundant.
  • AI that doesn't cooperate, namely the Gekko.
  • Enemies that run away and waste time, namely the Fenrirs.
  • Dumbfuck enemies that kill each other.
  • Dumbfuck enemies that kill themselves, this is by far the biggest problem with this mission. Also, this never happens anywhere else in MGR, in the main game or in DLC, which leads me to believe that they just never play tested this garbage.
  • A somewhat tight time limit.

I strongly recommend running from the final area back to the starting area just after the Fenrirs spawn in. At least 3 will hopefully follow you back, and then you don't have to worry about them committing suicide. The best way to kill them I found was to hit them 3 times with the UNCHARGED bloodlust - they mostly just let you do it and every time you do it is an instant stun, any other way takes a long time and I ended up with the silver rank twice because of them running away from me..

Also, wait until you either get the QTE against the Mastiffs, or they go down on their knees before you Zandatsu them. If they're standing you're very likely to miss your swing..

Besides VR 18, VR 27 was the only DLC mission which gave me trouble while I was playing MGR:R. Want to know something totally embarrassing? I had no idea how to Defensive Offensive until I started playing that particular VR mission. Once I learned how to do it, I finished that mission on my second try.

Not sure if you knew this, but there was a way to fight the Mastiff's 1-on-1 versus 3-on-1. You would attack them normally, Defensive Offensive (:square:+:cross: + in the desired direction) the unblockable moves (grabs), parry the moves which could be parried, then repeat the same process with the other two. The goal is to get to the Fenrirs as fast as possible since they take a huge chunk of your time, since mobility favors them. However, if you are lucky and you time it correctly, a simple triple charge :triangle: or :square: + :square: + :triangle: from Blood Lust goes a long way. The second combo (:square: + :square: + :triangle:) is risky since it is slower and the Fenrirs are moving everywhere. Although, if you can parry them, then "bam!" instant execution!

Honestly, I made that mission harder than it should have been since it was quite easy. Another one was VR 30, but yeah, lets not get into that. :p

Just reached mission 27 today and reading all your comments about it makes me not want to even attempt it. The game used to be so much fun until they made me go through 50 VR missions and the broken Armstrong fight from Sam's DLC...

Honestly, it feels like such a chore and I can't do more than 1-3 missions a day without feeling completely burned out.
