Help! Do I have a virus on my Vita?

Recommended Posts

When I play games on Vita I see my username and some strange characters behind it in games. Like williebrillie666_Ë or sometimes with other games different characters. Does this mean I have a virus. I read about virusses on the internet and some people say, the Vita can't have virusses and others say it can. Who must I believe? Please help me, cause I'm worries here.

Everything which runs some kind of software which can be altered can have a virus. And yes you can get some from watching videos because data is stored on your system.

But no, you don't have any and it's highly doubtful you'll ever get one on your Vita from watching a vid. The impact size for something so specific would be to small to anyone caring about.

From what it looks like it's just display error. Your name is somewhere stored as a variable and it looks like it's not translated properly from written form with additional identifiers to what needs to be displayed and thus is showing an additional Byte.

Did you restart your Vita since?

Did you notice the problem happening after watching the video?

I must honnestly say I don't know cause therfore I barely used my vita. It's from the latest period I use it often.

But what c1ned1ne said:

This.

I think he's right. There is a slim chance you ge a virus on vita. But for virus software writers it's way more attractive to write for windows.

Strangest thing is. I cannot find anything about those strange characters on the internet. So am I really the only one with this issue?

Looks like it ^^

Where exactly does it occur? Across all instances of your username or just in certain games?

As a last resort I'd try rebuilding the database after backing up everything.

Just in certain games. The games are Pure chess and PS All-stars battle royale. I don't know if it is in other games cause I haven't tried that yet. But nothing else is wrong with my Vita. It ain't a virus cause there should be other things, including the loss of my account, I assume.

But it's still strange. Why am I the only one on the whole freakin world who had this problem. At least it looks that way cause nothing on the internet can be found about this strange problem.

Well I guess it's not such a big problem. It's only some strange characters that shouldn't be there:p

Edit: But if it's even the sligthest bit possible to get a virus on Vita and PS3 why are there no safety measures taken? There should be anti virus software for both. I mean even when the chance you obtain a virus is 1 on fourthousand billion, it's still a chance. When there is absolutely zero chance then it means it can never happen. But I think there should be safety precautions for such occurances.

You can only find viruses that are already known. New ones are determined by heuristic - certain behaviour such as trying to change a file will trigger an alarm. One of the sharpest heuristics I come across is Kaspersky on the highest setting. It will go off almost everytime you do something simple like patching. Now imagine the panic outbreaks from inexperienced console users if a false positive comes up

But there is a safety measure - the closed environment consoles run. You don't have access to everything but only things Sony approves of. That's one reason for the whole certification progress. The random fly-by viruses of the net are of little danger because the OS is less open to changes than on your average PC.

The chance of this being because of a virus or other malware is incredibly small.

Can you take a screenshot of the problem? The best thing to do might be call Sony's tech support for your region.

I agree, call Sony and let them know but don't tell them you download porn. Might ruin your warranty.

First I will try to download firmware 2.12 and see if it solves the problem. If that ain't gonna work I'll call Sony.

Edit: I did what I said above and it seems the problem is solved:P Just so strange I couldn't find anything about this on the internet.

Why dont you take a screenshot of it so we can see?

If it appears on the screenshot, its something on the Vita, if its not, then wouldnt it be screen burn or something? (Though it probably wouldnt change characters if it was screen burn - or at least what i think screen burn is)

If you dont know, i think you have to hold in the ps button and start to take screenshots..

i wouldnt think people just sit there and make viruses who has time to do that? but i do believe virus protector companies probably do like norton avg and all them others cause how else will they make money? if there was no viruses there would be none of them but if you download something untrusted usually keygens too just cause there a hack avg and norton say its a virus and in some cases it can stuff with a system or download more trojans i saw in the vitas web browser theres trend micro and same with the ps3 but u have to buy it -_- maybe sony should implement virus protectors in their system via a system update and have it hidden installed and just monitor the systems to make sure this doesn't happen.
