Introduction:

This is an HD remake of a vertical scrolling shooter originally released for the arcades in 2005. It was released on the Dreamcast a half year later, and is now on PS3 and Xbox 360. There are only 5 levels and they take around 40 minutes to beat. As with most shmups, this game got a great soundtrack, especially in the NEW ORDER mode.

You don't need to be a shmup veteran to get the (P). All of the trophies are easily obtained except for one, STOCKPILING ARMS. This one trophy is quite easy to obtain if you got two controllers, but if you only got one it can become somewhat hard for people who haven't played these kind of games before. You can play the game in arcade mode and the new order (wide-screen) mode. The game also contain an extra mode where the levels are inverted.

As usual, I love feedback, so if you got anything you want to say about the guide, please do so.

Walkthrough:

Step 1 (The Wait):

This step is optional but it's very much recommended if you want it as easy as possible. The longer you play the game in one mode the more credits you will be given for that mode. After playing the game for 8 hours you will have unlocked infinite credits. You don't actually need to be playing. You can pause the game and go do something else like sleeping. Since there are two modes, new order mode and arcade mode, you will "have" to do this for both modes. Remember to exit back to the main menu after pausing the game for 8 hours for the game to save that you've played it for 8 hours.

Step 2 (Playing):

You have to play both modes at least three times on each of the different difficulties, and one of these three times in each mode must be in extra mode. You may want to play on easy the first time if you have never played a game like this before, else I recommend starting on normal difficulty. This is so you can play on easy in extra mode, but it doesn't really matter, because the difference between the modes and difficulties are more visual and nothing noteworthy difficulty-wise.

See NEW ORDER HARD CLEAR for many useful advice and tips on how to beat the game.

See NEW ORDER EXTRA START for how to unlock extra mode.

The soundtrack is pretty good and there are several versions of it, so while playing through the game 6 times you may want to listen to it instead of the shooting sounds. I recommend setting the BGM volume to 100, and SE and VOICE to 35.

Step 3 (Cleaning Up):

Get the various trophies you are still missing. This is probably the hardest step. Check the trophy guide for how to get them.

Tips on how to beat the game:

  • Your hit box is the little circle in the middle on top of your chopper. Make sure it does not get hit by enemy fire, etc.
  • You can change the character, and different characters have different choppers. Some, for example, have homing missiles which can be very useful to take out things you can't aim at directly. You change the character at the main menu.
  • I suggest you go into the options settings and change the controller settings:
    • Set bomb to be on a button you can easily use whenever you use both your sticks and one that isn't too easily fired off at mistake.
    • Turn on dual stick, so you can use your right stick to aim at where you want to shoot, and by just aiming it in a direction it will shoot.
    • Response is pretty low, you can adjust it as you see fit. It just affects how "smoothly" you fly around, but for more precision it could be wise to turn it a bit higher.

[*]You can set the number of lives you have before you start playing. Just change player stock to 5 to make it easier for yourself. There is no trophy that is directly affected by how many lives you decide to start out with, but there are a couple of trophies that can be easier to obtain if you set it to a lower number.

[*]You have a special "attack" called option. You have an infinite number of it, but you need to reload it after each time you use it. Watch the bar in the bottom left corner. When it is filled with green you can use it, and you use it by just shooting as normal. When you use it, you will see it goes red, and it starts shooting. Once the red disappears you must stop shooting for a little while to make it reload back up to green again.

[*]Use bombs to damage all enemies on the screen, clear the screen of enemy fire, and make yourself invincible for a short amount of time. It also seems to slow down the time in the game too.

[*]Last boss is probably the hardest in the game. Make sure you get to the last part with "enough" bombs and lives left. Place yourself at the middle of the bottom of the screen and fire up while you keep using bombs.

[*]Whenever you run out of lives, you will have to use a credit to continue. To make it easy on yourself, you should unlock free credits before starting to play.

    • The more you play a mode in the game, the more credits you unlock.
    • After playing a mode for 8 hours, you will unlock free credits (infinite credits) for that mode. Since there are two modes, you need to do it for both modes.
    • You can start up the game in one of the modes, and then just enter the pause menu and leave the game on for 8 hours. When you get back just go back to the main menu in the game so the game saves you've been playing it for 8 hours in that mode.

    [*]2 players:

    • You can play with two players whenever you want by just pressing :start: on the second controller.
    • You can bring a player back to the game whenever they get a game over by pressing :start: without being forced to restart a checkpoint.
    • As long as both doesn't lose all their lives at the same moment you won't get forced to restart a checkpoint.
    • If you have free credits (infinite continues) it does not matter how often they die and you pretty much just gotta make sure to take out the enemies and bring the players back to life whenever their lives run out.
    • Use the players' bombs all the time, as they get 3 more whenever they die, and dying isn't a problem anymore. Helps you take out everything on the screen faster.
    • Whenever you need another 3 bombs you can sacrifice a player by running it into an enemy, which in fact does major damage.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/1753/3A7.jpg ACE SHOT (S)

DESTROY A SPECIFIC NUMBER OF ENEMIES WITH THE OPTION WEAPON

You need to destroy a specific number of enemies with "one use" of the option weapon to obtain this trophy. I'm pretty sure the specific number of enemies is 5 or 6. You can see how many enemies you've destroyed in combo in the upper left corner. I recommend you do this at a location with lots of weak enemies and on easy difficulty.

See NEW ORDER HARD CLEAR for how to use the option weapon.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/1753/4A7.jpg WAR CONTRIBUTION (B)

SCORE A SPECIFIC CONTRIBUTION PERCENTAGE OR HIGHER

You must destroy all enemies in a level to obtain this trophy. You can look at the end of the stage screen how many % of the enemies you destroyed.

See NEW ORDER HARD CLEAR for tips to make it easier.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/1753/CA9.jpg TOP GUN (B)

SCORE A SPECIFIC SKILL ASSESSMENT PERCENTAGE OR HIGHER

Have the maximum amount of lives (the number you selected before starting the game) left at the end of the level screen to obtain this trophy. This means you can waste all of your lives right before or at the boss, then use a credit to get all your lives back and from there just beat the boss without losing a life to obtain this trophy.

See NEW ORDER HARD CLEAR for tips to make it easier.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/1753/F28.jpg EARTH-FRIENDLY (S)

SCORE A SPECIFIC AMOUNT OR HIGHER FOR FUEL CONSERVATION

You must beat the boss at the end of a stage within a certain amount of time to obtain this trophy. The exact time you must beat the boss within is currently not known to me, but the trophy is not hard to obtain. A good trick here is to use a lot of bombs and aim and shoot at where you actually damage the boss.

See NEW ORDER HARD CLEAR for tips to make it easier.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/1753/0F0.jpg STOCKPILING ARMS (G)

SCORE A SPECIFIC AMOUNT OR HIGHER FOR AMMUNITION CONSERVATION

You must have 6 bombs left when you get to the end of stage score screen to obtain this trophy. This can be done in several ways. The easiest way is to use two controllers, but don't be too scared if you only got one, it'll just requires a lot more from you.

Tips:

  • Since the first level is the easiest, you will want to do this on the first level, but on the first level there is only one power up that will spawn from killing the enemies.
  • The second level has two bomb power ups, but it's a bit harder, though perfectly fine to complete without using any bombs if played right.
  • How many bombs you got left carries over to the next level.
  • At the beginning of the game and whenever a player dies, you start out with 3 bombs.
  • Whenever a player loses all their lives and uses a credit, a bomb power up will spawn on the screen so it can be picked up for an additional bomb.
  • Before playing, you can set how many lives you have.
  • See NEW ORDER HARD CLEAR for tips on how to beat the game, which can be very useful whether you go for this trophy by using one or two controllers.

Two controllers (easier):

With the above tips in mind, you can see how you can't get 6 bombs in the first and easiest level by simply picking up the bomb power ups you get from killing enemies. Luckily, you can get it by making a second player die until they lose all their lives twice, which can be achieved rather quickly if the amount of lives are set quite low. You will have to make sure player 1 has 6 bombs when the boss is beat at the end of the level, but this should be rather easy.

One controller (harder):

With the above tips in mind, you can see how you can't get 6 bombs in the first and easiest level with only one controller. You can get up to 5 bombs by killing off yourself enough times until you have to use a credit, which in turns spawns a bomb power up you can pick up. Later in the level you can pick up the one bomb power up an enemy drops after killing it. In the end you can't get 6 bombs as the trophy requires. This means you will have to get it in the second level. You can either suicide at the very beginning of the second level until you use a credit and a bomb power up spawns, then get the two bombs enemies drop, or you can carry with you 4 or 5 bombs from the last level. The hardest part is getting through the level without dying and without using any of the bombs after the last bomb an enemy drops. If you find this very hard to do, then I recommend listening to the last tip listed in the list above.

SCORE A SPECIFIC SKILL ASSESSMENT PERCENTAGE OR HIGHER

Not tested:

Might also be possible to just have max lives at the end of the level to obtain this trophy. If this is the case then you can waste all your lives and use a credit to get max lives again and finish the level with this.

I just tried this tip on 2 of my secondary accounts and can confirm that it works fine.

I started a new game, lost all my lives before the first boss, used one credit to continue, beat the boss without dying and voilà, trophy popped out.

Thanks for this tip and your guide :applause:

Just got this Platinum. One of the easiest + fastest Ive unlocked.

5 credits are more than enough to beat every mode. I highly recommend the last character/aircraft P because of its Homing missiles. That aircraft in conjunction with the Cannon Option will devastate almost everything on your path. I also noticed that combination would slow down the framerate a lot...which is good in this game cuse it gives you time to react and evade bullets. Just use Bombs when youre about to die or you feel like you wont be able to dodge.

After a few playthroughs I got good enough to avoid getting killed in the first 3 stages on easy and BAM every miscellaneous trophy unlocked (ace shot, top gun, stockpiling arms...etc).

Yup, changing the character to one with homing missiles are very useful, just like pointed out in the guide:

"You can change the character, and different characters have different choppers. Some, for example, have homing missiles which can be very useful to take out things you can't aim at directly. You change the character at the main menu."

I guess I didn't really notice the reduced frame rate due to change of character, but yeah, I remember it had some minor frame rate issues. Isn't that how it usually is with a heck lot happening on the screen? =P Almost like a shmup feature so you got more time to think when a lot is happening.

Nope :p Going casual and this game doesn't seem to interest me. But I heard people talking about it, so I had to check it out ;)

Oh, the game is pretty good. Not many shmups for PS3, but this is one of the best of them. Great soundtrack too. You don't need to be really good at shmups to beat it either, and can be a decent challenge for veterans if they make it hard for themselves.

  • 2 weeks later...

I was trying to figure out why I had got a 1 star vote on this thread. Then I realized stgermain had removed all the re-directs and a lot of information I had added. Now the guide makes very little sense anymore... -_-' They were all specifically written for each of the trophies. I said I wanted them in for obvious reasons. Either it requires more information on many more trophies, or it requires those re-directs on most of the trophies. -_-'' Good thing I got a copy of it.

EDIT:

  • 1 month later...
If I leave the game on for 8 hours to unlock freeplay in one of the 2 modes will I have freeplay forever even if I turn off and on the game?

Remember to exit back to the main menu after pausing the game for 8 hours for the game to save that you've played it for 8 hours.

When you get back just go back to the main menu in the game so the game saves you've been playing it for 8 hours in that mode.

It saves how long you've played a mode when you get back to the main menu. It will remember this the next time you play in that mode even if you've turned off your console. Just as I said in the road map and in the trophy guide, you need to get back to the main menu to save you've played it. You can either finish the game, die or just exit back to the main menu. Just don't quit the game or shut off your console without doing so, as then it won't save it. You will see it save when you go back to the main menu, and I've tested this to work.

Thanks! I'm hoping to get this game in the mail this week.

Nice. I purchased it on PSN when it was on sale. I paid 17.62USD for it. If you like shmups, you will probably like this game a lot. Good music and good gameplay. A bit slowdowns on the frame rate when it gets really heavy (doesn't skip frames, only slows the gameplay down a little, which is kinda nice, almost like a feature to make it easier for you), but else runs very smoothly. Just make sure to adjust the controls properly so you can use the right stick to aim and shoot. The game isn't really that hard, so you don't really need infinite credits, but if you want to make it really easy for you or you are stuck, then infinite credits is an option.
