Welcome to the first PST Gaming League: Rocket League Season 1!

Feel free to ask your questions or give us feedback on that particular season here. You can also check the General Thread regarding the basics of PST Gaming Leagues. For other matters like sign-ups and team finding, please refer to the other threads specified below.

What you need to know

Teams will be scheduled to play a match against at least one other team every week during 6 weeks, starting January 25th. Winners will be decided with a best-of-3-games format. Based on the number of sign-ups, you might have to play each team more than once during the season.

At the end of the season, the 2 top teams from both pools will be pitted against each other with a best-of-5-games format (single-elimination semi-finals will be played between the first team from one pool and the second of the other).

Since many expressed concern about being available for several consecutive Saturday nights, we are giving you mostly free reign over scheduling, only with one restriction. Matches will need to be played on the specified week. For example, teams will have to play their first match(es) between Monday January 25th and Sunday January 31st.

Apart from this, teams will be free to organize themselves as they see fit. We will be revealing the schedule shortly before the beginning of the first week, so we strongly advise captains to get in touch as soon as possible and not to wait until the last moment to arrange matches. Note that if you fail to reach an agreement, both teams will be credited a forfeit and lose 3 points.

Teams of 4 are welcome to sign up, or you can be dropped into a random pool ala regular sign ups if you lack a team. We're hoping to have separate leagues to accommodate both NA and EU players, if there are enough sign ups.

Matches will be standard 3v3. Teams being comprised of 4 people, one member will be sitting out every match. It will be in your best interest to plan this in advance, as no rematch and no bots filling vacant spaces will be allowed. If your team can't provide enough players or fails to show up on the agreed date altogether, it will forfeit the match.

Notes on disconnections/network issues:

The only situation where we could allow a match to be played after its designated week is in case of a notorious PSN downtime. In such instance, we'll ask you re-schedule the match as soon as possible, no later than the following week.

Furthermore, if one or more players are randomly disconnected during a game, we encourage you to rematch immediatly at least once. More than anything, both teams should communicate right away and agree on what to do and which games will count. Of course, you are still free to call on us to make a decision, but we'd rather have you guys talk between yourselves and resolve the issue straight away than asking us to decide hours later. Feel free to report such cases along with the results though, we don't want people to abuse this and get an extra chance when they are losing.

Scoring and tracking

For all 3 games of a match, points will be awarded as follow:

  • 2 points for the winning team
  • no points for the losing team
  • 1 bonus point for the losing team if the game ends in overtime

In addition to these, a penalty of -3 points will be applied to any forfeiting team.

For example, if the same team wins all 3 games in regulation, it will get 6 points and the losing team will get 0. But if two of these games end during overtime, the winning team will still get 6 points but the losing one will get 2.

The captain of each team will report the results and the list of participating members at the end of each match to AlphaCookie or kinjall via PM. If there are any disputes over the score, photos of the final score will need to be provided. If visual proof is only provided by one member then that member’s proof will be used; if no visual proof is provided and the dispute cannot be resolved then both members will forfeit the match. Please make sure to cover your bases and take photos for proof if you're concerned; otherwise your dispute will be dismissed.

This tracking spreadsheet will be revealed at a later date.

Final reminder

Teams are composed of 4 people, but the games will be 3v3. One member will be sitting out every match to accommodate people being unable to attend. This decision was made to avoid cancellations and endless rescheduling, and implies two things that you should keep in mind:

  • Make sure that 3 members of your team are available for each scheduled match or you risk forfeiting. You will not be able to use bots to fill empty spots, and no rescheduling on following weeks will be allowed.
  • Season credits being earned individually, you also need to ensure that each member plays enough games throughout the season to qualify. Additionally, finals do not count as qualifying games, you will have to play at least 3 games during the regular season to earn a credit.

We recommend that you plan in advance and organize yourselves accordingly. No exceptions will be made.

Signing-up

Similarly to the original Rocket League league, your team will need a name, a captain and 3 other members.

Please use the threads below for the formalities.

Since we are aiming to begin on January 25th, sign-ups will close on Thursday January 21st at 12 NOON, GMT. We might push it back a week if it seems like we need more time to get enough sign-ups, so please don't wait until the last moment! ;)

As it should've been in Rocket League...League :p Rookie bots were not fun haha.

[*]1 bonus point for both teams if at least one of the games ends in overtime

Just wondering about this...are you sure this is a good idea? It could lead to teams secretly agreeing to draw games (or just play for a draw and not bother scoring in one of their 3 games) just for the extra point.

Also, why do both teams get rewarded? The winning team get 2 points for winning anyway...why should they get an extra point by being held to a draw by an inferior team?

I'd suggest maybe that if a team wins, they get 3 points. If the losing team scored a win (so 2-1 overall), they get a point as they actually won a game. If it's 2-0, they receive 0 points.

Rules update!

To keep it short, I'll just quote the updated first post:

Since many expressed concern about being available for several consecutive Saturday nights, we are giving you mostly free reign over scheduling, only with one restriction. Note that if you fail to reach an agreement, both teams will be credited a forfeit and lose 1 point.

Bottom line: you have a whole week to organize your matches as you want, no rescheduling past that week, and forfeiting will cost you 1 point (either because both teams failed to agree on a date or because a team didn't show up on the arranged the date).

Another important detail, we plan to start this first gaming league on Monday January 25th.

To give us a little time to finalize the weekly schedules, sign-ups will close on Thursday January 21st at 12 noon GMT.

We might push these back a week if it seems like we need more time to get enough sign-ups, but we would like to avoid that so please don't wait until the last moment!

The idea behind the overtime bonus was to reward both teams for giving everything in a close match. In truth, OT doesn't seem to happen that often so if we notice a suspiciously high rate for everyone or for one/some of the teams, it's likely will take that away .

We also have to trust participants in this, but if it comes to that we can always require that screenshots be sent to us for reporting scores (which you should do anyway since this is the only way to prevent a potential dispute).

Your suggestion is interesting though. We'll probably keep it simple with the current scoring system for the first season but will definitely be considering it for future iterations if everything goes well! :p

Personally, I've always been a fan of the 3 point system. I've been wanting the NHL to do it for a while now to add more importance to winning in regulation. 3 points for regulation win. 2 points for OT win. 1 point for OT loss. 0 points for regulation loss.

We did have a few OTs in the Rocket League League. Twice in the NA finals. There were a few in the regular season matches as well. Can't remember how many. It would be pretty tough to tell what may or may not be "suspiciously high."

  • 2 weeks later...
With the success of the game night and the popularity of the game, I would have thought more people would have signed up by now. I hope this doesn't have to get cancelled. It's really fun to play.

With at least 4 teams signed up, we'll definitely be proceeding, but hopefully we get at least 6.

We had a good team going for the last one, then something happened and we all lost interest.

Damn, only 5 teams are interested in this...

Maybe it is not being advertised correctly? Surely more people would be willing to join......... I was member of this forums for a long time before I found out that there are game nights, events, competitions and such.

Edit: Maybe the moderators could send a message to all members advertising new community events...? Is that even possible? There could be a checkbox to 'receive message about new events', also, so those who are not interested could just uncheck that.

Posting on the Rocket League forum would be a start as I mentioned before.

Maybe all event directors could have a link in their sig for the ongoing signups. The amount of exposure would increase immensely just by having a link in Krid's sig alone :p

Maybe have a thread (or something) where you can sign up for Event PMs. Once a month everyone who signs up will get an "Event Newsletter" PM'd to them about all the happenings going on. That thread could also be advertised using event director sigs ;) Sending it to everybody would annoy some people because a lot of people simply don't care haha.

There's this really useful thread that Slamma runs and maintains very frequently:

http://www.playstationtrophies.org/forum/general-off-topic/189355-pst-participation-thread.html

Granted it's not a PM, but if you subscribe to it you shouldn't miss anything again :)

You mean like this?

http://www.playstationtrophies.org/forum/announcements/281648-psssst-forum-newsletter-vol-6-a.html

We advertise all of our events in The Arena (which is the place you'd expect these competitions to be - it's worth checking every week or two to see if you've missed something), Mendel announces them in the newsletter (:p) in the announcements forum, Slamma posts it in his thread...we do a lot to broadcast when stuff is happening.

We can't physically advertise everything to everyone, but we do our best to post about them wherever we can. There has to be some responsibility on the membership's behalf to keep up with the latest happenings by checking in the appropriate sections or threads. Events are quite regular, and of course we want as many people as possible to take part, we don't just stealthily put them up to appear like we're doing something and be like "yeah, this and that event happened" :p

It might be worth putting an announcement in the RL forum though...I seem to recall that's been discussed but can't remember if it was put up yet or if it'll happen

Sure, I always check that one out every week. Still, I missed that for a couple years due to lack of knowledge :p

Now the event has been posted on the Rocket League page. I hope more people will see that and will become interested.

Edit: Maybe all interested people should advertise the event on their signature, as a rule. You know, more advertisement, more interest.

A little reminder, you only have roughly 24h left to sign-up or make yourself known in the team finder thread!

This has been done in the past (albeit not that often I reckon), but we'll keep this in mind and consider it for some future events.

The only thing that puts me off wanting to join this is 3v3 matches only, as far as I can see. I'm only interested in 2v2 matches as 3v3 is too crowded for me.
This is only the first season, hosting different formats felt a little too much. We will obviously consider different things for the following ones. Don't hesitate to check the threads I mentioned above if you change your mind! ;)
