Welcome to Top Gun: Hard Lock, an arcade shooter based on the legendary Paramount hit film. The game has a pretty solid Campaign Mode as well as a 'Survival' esque Danger Zone as well as a Multiplayer mode, however you need an Online Pass to play it so be prepared to fork out on the PSN store for the privilege if your copy is used. That aside, it's a cool game with plenty going for it and is a challenge to Platinum without being too unforgiving. The trophy distribution is pretty good with only a few based on natural story progression and the majority of it being based on your combat execution and performance but if you do manage to get online then most of the trophies can also be earned in this mode as well. I hope you find the guide useful and it helps in pursuit of the Platinum, good luck!

Hard Lock - What is it and how does it work?

A 'Hard Lock' is the name given to the art of following an enemy aircraft with speed and precision in order to acquire a target lock for your missiles to connect and kill the enemy. This concept is brought into play in the form of QTE events which is demonstrated in the Tutorial part of Campaign Mode 'Mission 01' but to give a quick overview it works a little like this:

Whenever you encounter enemy aircraft it will become an active target with the type of plane it is, a percentage number of its health and a number which indicates the distance it is from you in metres. Note that if there is more than one enemy, then you can cycle between them and choose which is your active target by pressing :triangle:. Once you have an active target set, you need be positioned behind them, flying in the same direction and within 1000 metres. If you have positioned yourself properly you will see a :square: icon pop up next to the reticule around them so hit this button. You will then enter 'Hard Lock' mode.

When you enter into Hard Lock, to a vast degree you will be controlled by the A.I as you enter into a sort of aerial chase and view things from a cockpit cam. Also you will now have a white reticule on screen, your aim is to keep the target inside the reticule long enough for the reticule which homes in on it to go red. Where the QTE comes in is after a little while, maybe 5-10 seconds, if you have failed to keep them inside the reticule then a QTE event will play and one of two things will happen:

1: You successfully perform the QTE event and you will regain the action and your reticule scope will widen in proportion to the success percentage you saw on screen, based on the speed you reacted to the QTE prompt.

2: You will fail to react in time. When this happens you must still perform the QTE but you will see the bars are red instead of green, now the enemy aircraft will have you in Hard Lock and the reticule around you will be as wide as what it was based on the failed percentage, the wider it will be the less your percentage was. You must win the next QTE to regain the Hard Lock and so it goes on until one of you has a wide enough reticule to snap the target in a red crosshair and fire a missile with :circle: to destroy it.

Practice makes perfect and with enough play time you should become very competent. For those that are struggling a little though, I found a very helpful little trick, see the TOP GUN trophy description for more info.

Step 1 - Campaign Mode

Though you can do this on Hard straight away and save yourself another play through, I recommend doing it on Easy or Normal first to get to grips with things. With 15 missions to get through it is not a very long or arduous thing to have to play through but if you think you are ready to go straight in on Hard then by all means do so, though this is still not a guarantee you won't have to play a mission again if you didn't quite get a Gold Star. You will unlock all Story Related trophies in this step and very probably quite a few misc. ones as well but for this I would recommend not obsessing about the trophies and just play the game naturally and learn the basics. If you did go straight in on Hard and performed to such a level that you earned a Gold Star on each mission then you can skip the next part and go straight to Step 3.

Step 2 - Gold Star Run

Repeat every mission from Campaign Mode but this time with the difficulty on Hard. You should be used to the game by now and should breeze through it as the difficulty increase to an experienced gamer is almost non-existent. You should not have to play any mission more than once on Hard to reach a Gold Star score so see the Perfect Record trophy description for more info.

Step 3 - Multiplayer

There are only 3 trophies that require online and as mentioned in the Overview you need an Online Pass to enable online features. This step will either be tough as nails or an absolute breeze depending on if you choose to boost them or do it legit. The only active players online these days are competent and very tough customers so you will need you "A" game to get the Killstreak trophy. You can also knock out quite a few misc. trophies online too so keep an eye out for descriptions which mention that the criteria can be met both online and offline.

Step 4 - Sweep Up

You should be down the bare minimum at this stage and only need to kick out a few arbitrary tasks to complete the trophy list. Possible candidates could be for gaining Fleet Admiral Rank which will require some grinding to work up the total score you need for that, as well as maybe playing a few games in all the unlocked aircraft and firing every type of weapon in the game. None of the trophies are missable in this game as you have Mission Select available so look in the Guide for any trophy you might be missing, then read what game mode to choose and where it is best to work on it.

Complete mission 01 - Welcome To The Gulf

:tagstory:

Story related and cannot be missed.

This introductory mission serves as a tutorial to teach you the most basic of manoeuvres for the game, there is a very light amount of combat and a landing to master at the end but it's a routine affair. As you can replay missions though, you can get a ton of trophies on this one because of the fact there's nothing else to do other than take the 6 MiGs out and return to base. The distance flown, weapon usage and combat related trophies can all be farmed here so check out individual trophy descriptions to find out which ones you can grind on this one.

Complete mission 04 - Alert Five

:tagstory:

Story Related and cannot be missed.

This mission introduces you to new elements of the game including air to ground combat and a heavy emphasis on fleet protection, there are also the introduction of Secondary Objectives though they are not a requirement for passing missions. In this particular mission you will be tasked with patrolling a coastline which is a booby trap of ground targets but they are easily dealt with. The flagship USS McKinley makes an appearance only to become the subject of a massive enemy onslaught of attack vessels and MiG fighters. Once you deal with enough of them, waves of Bombers enter the fray which must be taken out ASAP as they do major damage to the aircraft carrier if they get within range. As such, this is a great time to get the Old School trophy so see that description for more details. Anyway. Once you've seen the bombers off, another wave of MiGs will rush you so handle them ASAP. Once you have taken out every aerial and nautical enemy, you will be told you can land on the aircraft carrier (don't forget to buzz the tower) to complete the mission.

Complete mission 06 - High Value Targets

:tagstory:

Story Related and cannot be missed.

In this mission you will be required to act as an aerial escort for a convoy on the ground who are transporting a precious cargo. There are also 2 defending allies to accompany you but end up constantly under attack by enemy MiGs and are of very little use whatsoever. Your loadout will consist of air to air missiles, air to ground missiles and bunker busters. You need to juggle your duties here and alternate between clearing a checkpoint for the convoy using air to ground missiles for sporadic targets hidden in buildings and the bunker buster for when units of enemy tanks club together in the road, and break off to bring down the MiGs who are hard locking your allies before they get shot down. Once the roads are clear and the waves of MiG fighters are done you will come across an enemy drone which looks like a stealth bomber. You need to engage it and destroy it with machine guns as your missiles homing systems are rendered ineffective against this aircraft. It can take a little while to nail and the QTEs in Hard Lock are less forgiving than they are against MiGs and other airborne bogeys so stick with it. When you bring it down the mission will end and your trophy will pop.

Complete mission 11 - Off Mission

:tagstory:

Story related and cannot be missed.

There's not really all that much to say about this Mission, in fact for being a Mission so far into the Campaign it's probably the most underwhelming scenarios of the game. You begin by having to take out a bridge which starts a mammoth trek for a ground based Special Forces unit and it is your sole objective for the whole mission to protect them from enemy fire. They will be held up in a village with road blockades, which you will have to destroy before they can move forwards, as well as the obligatory air based squadron to take out but this is all standard thoroughfare by now and after the antics of Mission 10 with the Stealth Drones bombing the airfield to pieces it is a huge downshift in pace. Anyway, once the Special Forces convoy make it to the last checkpoint then the mission is over and your trophy will pop.

Complete mission 14 - The Big One

:tagstory:

Story related and cannot be missed.

This mission has a bit of everything. Ground targets, aerial battles, unit protection and it's all rounded off with a showdown with the infamous Orlov. Standard tactics here prevail, take care of any attack units when you have ground based allies to protect, Hard Lock engage every enemy unit for the kill for maximum points and when it comes to Orlov there will be a scripted part where you will fail the QTE manoeuvres so don't worry. Re-engage him and this time succeed in the QTEs using the tactics outlined in the TOP GUN trophy if he's giving you a hard time.

http://www.playstationtrophies.org/images/trophies/1359/55C.jpg You .. Are Still Dangerous (B)(H)

Complete bonus mission - You Can Be Mine

:tagstory:

Story related and cannot be missed.

For this mission you take the role of the infamous Maverick with Iceman as your wingman. Things get very hectic on this one and enemy traffic is almost like a Danger Zone 5th wave at times with enemy MiGs and Su-25s everywhere. Objective wise there's nothing you won't have seen before and the vast majority of time here is straight up dogfighting as opposed to protecting any convoys or ground based targets. One thing unique to the Mission is the introduction of the heat seeking multi-target missile which when fired breaks into 4 separate missiles and goes after any target with a heat signature. Note that using these means not being in Hard Lock and as such your score will suffer for it so bear this in mind when using them, you will also need to take out any Jammers too if there are any in the sky. If you need the Gold Star then I recommend Hard Locking every enemy target you can for the points bonus.

http://www.playstationtrophies.org/images/trophies/1359/B52.jpg Last Man Standing (B)

Complete any Danger Zone mission

You can select Danger Zone from the main menu as soon as you begin playing but I advise you to leave it until well after you get the hang of the game. It is the equivalent of other combat games 'Survival Mode' in that there are 5 rounds which get progressively more difficult to complete with a final round against Orlov (the Russian Ace from Campaign Mode) to finish. Waves 2 and 4 have objectives or handicaps as well as the mandatory enemy waves and they are definitely to be left alone until you are experienced with the game. What's more, if you die then it's game over. No starting again on the wave you died on so bear that in mind. You can select any aircraft and loadout but I recommend using the F-22 Raptor with a balanced loadout like 'Multi Role'. The default map for Danger Zone is 'Persian Gulf' which is a very difficult map by any standard but a great tip is to advance far enough in Campaign Mode to unlock the 'Black Sea' map (Mission 12) and do that one instead because it is much easier. The enemy MiGs are easier to follow, the handicaps are much more lenient than in the Gulf and Round 5 allows you to wipe out almost all of the ground targets before the airborne enemies arrive making things much more manageable.

General tips for this mode are to play on Easy as the difficulty does not matter, this will make the QTE events a little more forgiving and your shield energy will take more damage to deplete entirely. Hard Lock all airborne targets and deal with them before focusing on AA Guns and SAM launchers on the ground, you can sweep them up easier without a MiG on your tail. When it comes to Orlov, use the same tactics as those outlined in the TOP GUN trophy to gain the advantage to take him out and you should be grand.

http://www.playstationtrophies.org/images/trophies/1359/95D.jpg OK-3 Landing (B)

Make a successful landing on your first attempt in any mission

For this trophy you must end the mission you are on by landing your aircraft on the tarmac/aircraft carrier successfully on the first attempt. Once you complete all of a mission's objectives you are sometimes required to fly back to base which is an aircraft carrier, you will first be guided to a marker at the rear of the ship to fly to so you can align yourself with the ship on approach. Your speed is arbitrary, what you must get right is your angle and your altitude. If you are in line with the deck and on a trajectory that will seemingly end with you crash landing into the deck, a cutscene will kick in and show you a perfect landing just before you actually do. For the trophy you must do this at the first time of asking, if you are too high on approach or not straight enough and have to circle back around you must quit the mission and restart to retry. As such, Mission 01 is the perfect place to get this, nice and short so you can get back to attempting your landing quickly. This not a hard trophy but the trick is not to pull up when it looks like your about to smash into the tarmac, the cutscene will take over I assure you.

http://www.playstationtrophies.org/images/trophies/1359/A23.jpg Maverick's Dead (B)(H)

Defeat Maverick in mission 02 - Best Of The Best

It doesn't matter which difficulty you play this on. Mission 02 is an extension of 01 in that it is a simulation exercise designed to teach you the controls and dynamics of the game. After you take out the drones you will be notified via radio that Fury will soon be arriving to spar with you and your wingman (in order to test your Hard Lock manoeuvre skills). After the small cutscene you will notice that in fact none other than Maverick and Iceman have come to the party instead. By default you will be paired with Iceman and you will need to break his Hard Lock on you and in turn get a Hard Lock on him, follow this up by keeping the reticule fixed on him to come out of that duel the winner. As scripted, Maverick will have beaten your wingman leaving you both to duel it out for the winner. Chase him down and gain a Hard Lock. Stay on him and knock out the manoeuvres to widen the scope of your reticule. Once you have done so a few times it will be relatively easy to pin the reticule on him for it to turn red and declare you the winner. The trophy will pop soon afterwards.

http://www.playstationtrophies.org/images/trophies/1359/35C.jpg Top Gun (B)(H)

Win the trophy in mission 12 - TOPGUN

I had major problems with this trophy and must have tried to beat it somewhere around 100 times. Fury, on any difficulty, is super nimble, and the QTE events leave you almost no time to react. Thankfully, I worked on a series of tactics and found one that worked for me an absolute charm.

At first you will duplicate events played out in Mission 02 when you beat Iceman then Maverick so make as short work of this as you can. You will be tied on points according to the message you get from HQ that you and Fury are tied for Top Gun. She will become an active target so fly to her waypoint to engage her, note that you are scripted to fail the first part of this so just let her get a Hard Lock on you and don't try to evade it, it will just prolong the inevitable. She will break off from you and mock you a little, just stay where you are and listen to the script then she will approach again, now this is where things get interesting.

You need to obtain a Hard Lock on her which isn't hard but the QTE events are so lightning quick it takes nothing to fail them. Nothing I tried actually worked i.e. not trying to second guess the patterns before they appeared, not 'dead sticking' the thumb buttons ready for the QTE but I found that if I gained a Hard Lock and just waited with my thumb on :start: to pause and stared at the screen ready, when the QTE came up I would hit pause instantly. Because the image was in my head but time was now still, I would configure the thumb buttons in the required directions and unpause it. I was pulling off 100% success patterns for fun after 2 attempts and I nailed her.

To expand on this I need to give an example. The :l3: button is key here on the pause menu. When you pause you are given 4 options in descending order as follows:

Continue

Restart Mission

Options

Quit

The cursor is pre-selected to 'Continue'.

Now, let's say your following Fury in Hard Lock and the QTE comes up as :l3: to be held to the left and :r3: be held to the right. Hit start, hold the thumb buttons in the required directions, and hit :cross: as it will still be over 'Continue' whilst continuing to hold the thumb buttons firmly in their directions. You will pull off a faultless manoeuvre when you unpause if you were quick enough. Now if it comes up as just :l3: to be held down when you pause, you will move the cursor down to be over 'Restart Mission' which of course you don't want. What you do is bump the cursor down so its over 'Quit', then hold :l3: downwards so it goes back up to 'Continue' and hit :cross:. Basically :r3: doesn't matter as it doesn't affect the selection cursor but :l3: does so position it as required, hold the buttons in place as per the QTE so the cursor lands on 'Continue' and hit :cross: to unpause.

It sounds complicated but it really isn't. The trick is staring at the screen anticipating the QTE, pause it the instant you see it and because of a cognitive process I can’t begin to explain or really even understand properly, you can recall it from memory and have all the time in the world to place the buttons in the directions before unpausing it. If it was not for this method I found then this would have been at least a 7 or 8 in platinum difficulty.

http://www.playstationtrophies.org/images/trophies/1359/0A1.jpg Danger Close (B)

Complete a Danger Close objective without damaging any allies

A Danger Close objective is an objective in which you have to protect a cargo from attack, and the trophy will unlock when you do so with such precision and speed that your allies receive no damage at all. There are a host of chances to unlock this in just about every mission from 03 onwards but the easiest I found was on Mission 06. When you receive the objective to protect your allies from ground units to the west you will notice a secondary objective become available, switch your payload to air to ground missiles and approach the secondary targets from the south. You can take out two targets in good time on your first sweep, turn the jet around and lock on to the last two targets taking them out one at a time. Once they are destroyed the trophy will unlock if you managed to take them out before the Allies took any damage. If they did you can always down your own plane to restart from the last checkpoint and try again.

http://www.playstationtrophies.org/images/trophies/1359/7B5.jpg Ghostrider (S)

Complete all stealth sections in the game without being detected

There are only a small handful of stealth sections in the game and none of them are particularly difficult to negotiate. Generally there are two types of radar surveillance which you need to bypass, the first is to fly at very low altitude and is indicated by a transparent red mesh above you (called a 'Hard Ceiling'), fly above this and you will set off an alert and blow your cover. The other is to fly carefully to a waypoint whilst negotiating the radar waves indicated on your map in the lower left corner of the screen. The radar position will be marked by a little black triangle with outward circular 'pings' emitting from them to show the range of the signal. Fly around these so as to not set off the alert but more often than not, there will be two in close proximity leaving a very fine line to be flown between them to not set either one off (altitude for these ones do not matter).

If you do happen to fly within range of a radar, a little white picture of a radar dish will appear above the little Nav map in the bottom left of a radar. This does not mean you have been spotted and that you failed, this just means you are within range of being picked up so be careful not to get any closer as the white will fade to pink, then red the closer you fly to the radar. If you set one off you then will get a message on screen saying such and such as a rule, keep any icons out of the red and if you don't get a message saying you messed up then you are good to go. One last thing is if you do happen to set off a radar, nosedive into the ground to restart from the last checkpoint. I can confirm this will wipe off the alert and you will still get the trophy as long as you avoid them on the next run.

Below are the missions where there are stealth sections and a little bit about them:

Mission 05 (Both Hard Ceiling and Fixed Point kinds)

You start the mission under a Hard Ceiling, be sure not to fly above it until you are past it (you will be notified on screen). After you destroy the Com towers you will then have to negotiate a field of fixed point radars, inbound MiGs make this a little tricky too as they sometimes fly right past one and if you are in Hard Lock mode you are therefore dragged along with it. If this happens and you set a radar off, crash your plane to restart from the last checkpoint.

Mission 09 - Fixed Point

This is a test mission with the newly acquired F-22 Raptor. Once you learn the controls then pass the Hard Lock test against the two drones, you are set a new ground target in the distance through a field of radars. It is off to the right but you will need to straight at first then bear left and back around to it, kind of like a reverse question mark. You will almost certainly fly within range to set off the icon that appears to warn you of your proximity but just be careful and fly slowly through until you are told you are clear by an on screen message.

Mission 12 - Fixed Point + Hard Ceiling

You begin this mission with Fury ahead of you. Follow her tail as she guides you through the start of this mission through a radar covered area to stay out the path of detection. There is also a Hard Ceiling in effect at the same time but it is pretty high up so it will be hard to break, especially if you are flying at the same altitude as Fury. Once you complete this section successfully, your trophy will pop.

Get silver or gold stars on 10 campaign missions

:tagdifficulty:

See Perfect Record for a detailed explanation of the star rating system and methods to improve your rating. This will unlock as soon as you achieve at least a Silver Star rating on 10 out of the 15 campaign missions in the game.

http://www.playstationtrophies.org/images/trophies/1359/DAA.jpg Perfect Record (G)

Get gold stars on all 15 campaign missions

:tagdifficulty:

Before anything else, it should be noted that you can select the difficulty from the Options menu from the main screen and to get a Gold Star, you must be playing on Hard and the points return is not enough on Easy or Normal.

Every time you complete a Campaign Mission you are given a score and a Star Rank. Your score determines your rank so in tandem, the more points you score in a mission, the better the star rank you will be awarded and as stated, only Hard difficulty will give you the required points tally to Gold Star a mission. There are no additional objectives with the increase in difficulty, in fact the difference is marginal once you have honed your skills once on Easy. The only things to mention really are that your damage takes a little longer to regenerate and the Hard Lock manoeuvres are a little less forgiving in terms of the time you get to complete the QTE events. Here are a few general tips on how to maximise your score.

  • Always kill aerial targets in Hard Lock, it awards way more points than if you don't.
  • Complete secondary objectives. It is often the difference between a Silver and a Gold
  • Buzz the tower on missions where it is available, you get a little points boost for doing so.

I can also confirm that the time it takes you to complete a mission doesn't seem to matter so don't get hung up on how long it's taking you. It also doesn't seem to matter if you die and have to restart from a checkpoint, you retain the points you had before the last checkpoint and there are no penalties for dying. I was also able to obtain Gold Stars with the default planes and loadouts for each mission so this isn't an issue. These together with the tips above should see you right, it is not actually a hard game at all once you get the timing down for the QTE events.

http://www.playstationtrophies.org/images/trophies/1359/26D.jpg Try, Try And Try Again (B)

Replay any campaign mission and improve your score

This is a super easy trophy and should be amongst the first ones you earn. When you first begin playing the game, play Campaign Mode 'Mission 01' on Easy (settings found in the Options Menu on main title screen) and complete the mission following the tutorial as you go. Once it's over, go back and put the difficulty onto either Normal or Hard and do the same mission again. Voila!, your trophy will unlock. Even on Hard this is a tutorial mission and hard to mess up and would probably be your first Gold Star. If you decide to do a single playthrough on Hard, then do at least one of the missions on Easy first so you are guaranteed to do better when you put the difficulty back on Hard.

http://www.playstationtrophies.org/images/trophies/1359/0E8.jpg Near Death Experience (B)(H)

Complete any campaign mission without dying, after being below 25% health

Your health is indicated by a fighter jet symbol in white in the bottom right corner of the screen with your currently selected weapons at either side. When you take damage, the colour of the image fades from white to light orange, then to orange, then red and eventually flashing red for when it is critical. When you play on Easy, your health regenerates making this trophy even easier. The early missions are so easy it is sometimes hard to actually get damaged that much so if on the off chance you do not earn this naturally, replay Mission 05 and complete the first objective. You will be directed to your next rendezvous point which is a communications site. As you approach, AA Guns will be uncovered and engage you, they deal minimal but constant damage making this a very safe method. Sweep back and forth over the site but do not fire at them, if you destroy too many, your health regenerates faster than what the AA guns can dish out. Once your plane is somewhere in the region of between dark orange and bright red (you have to judge this, your health is not tagged by a number or percentage or anything) then disengage and retreat a safe distance to allow your health to take a breather. Once you are good again, clear out the objectives and proceed with the rest of the mission to get the trophy.

Get your first air-to-air combat kill

This will no doubt be the first trophy you unlock and is part of the Mission 01 tutorial in Campaign Mode. The game will teach you how to obtain a Hard Lock, line up your reticule as advised and fire a missile when prompted to on screen. The trophy will unlock soon afterwards. Note that you can not unlock this in multiplayer for some reason despite the other kill related trophies not being a problem.

Destroy 5 target drones

Drones are targets that mimic enemy targets and they are all that Mission 02 in Campaign Mode consists of so replay this a couple of times to bag the trophy. It doesn't matter on what difficulty you select to do this so feel free to complete the mission however you like as nothing is actually an enemy target and therefore poses a threat, a very easy trophy.

Destroying aircraft is pretty much what the game is all about. This trophy is a cumulative and also transfers to other game modes, Multiplayer so you could feasibly have 50 kills offline and 50 online and the trophy would pop. Every airborne enemy counts towards this total, even the bombers and the unmanned drones that pop up during the Campaign Mode occasionally and it does not matter whether you use missiles or machine gun fire. Once you destroy your 100th airborne enemy the trophy will unlock.

Your machine guns, as pointed out to you in the tutorial, are activated by pressing :cross:. You do not have to have a Hard Lock to damage an enemy but it is recommended to do so if you get the chance as it makes lining the target up so much easier. All kinds of aircraft count and the total can be made up with a combination of online and offline kills and they carry over to new missions as you progress through Campaign Mode so it should unlock quite early in the game.

http://www.playstationtrophies.org/images/trophies/1359/E24.jpg Good Tone (B)

Destroy 25 aircraft using missiles

:tagoffon:

Your missiles are fired by pressing :circle: but unlike the machine gun, you must get a lock on first. You can do this by entering Hard Lock mode as shown to you in the tutorial in Mission 01 or just by following the enemy and keeping your aiming reticule over them until the crosshairs turn red but this will require 2 missiles to down the plane whilst a Hard Lock is a one shot kill. All kinds of aircraft count and the total can be made up with a combination of online and offline kills and they carry over to new missions as you progress through Campaign Mode so it should unlock quite early in the game.

http://www.playstationtrophies.org/images/trophies/1359/5B2.jpg Hard Locked (B)

Destroy 25 aircraft in Hard Lock mode

:tagoffon:

As mentioned in the Introduction to this Trophy Guide, the art of Hard Locking your targets is mandatory to progressing in the game and should be utilised to destroy as many enemies as possible. Once you have a Hard Lock on an airborne enemy, you then need to destroy them - often by completing a series of QTE events. Once you do you will notice a score appear on the right side of the screen indicating you got the bonus. Repeat this on 25 enemies and the trophy will pop.

http://www.playstationtrophies.org/images/trophies/1359/A04.jpg Got Your Six (B)

Score 10 "Got Your Six" bonuses for destroying a target in a hard lock.

:tagoffon:

First of all, remember that this bonus must be earned whilst in Hard Lock. You can get it without and as such they will not count so just remember to engage pretty much everything in the air in Hard Lock to be sure.

"Got Your Six" bonuses are awarded for engaging an enemy aircraft that is attacking a friendly/wingman. You can find opportunities by studying the skies and watching for planes in a light blue circle being followed by planes with a yellow circle around them, press :triangle: until you cycle your target reticule over the plane with the yellow circle then chase them down until you can press :square: for the Hard Lock. You will get one as a scripted event in Mission 01 of Campaign Mode so you could in theory just farm this same one 10 times but there should be no feasible way you get to the end of the campaign without having got at least 10 of these naturally. This can be unlocked on or offline and is cumulative for both.

http://www.playstationtrophies.org/images/trophies/1359/15E.jpg Got Your Frag (B)

Score 10 "Got Your Frag" bonuses whilst destroying a target in a hard lock.

:tagoffon:

First of all, remember that this bonus must be earned whilst in Hard Lock. You can get it without and as such they will not count so just remember to engage pretty much everything in the air in Hard Lock to be sure.

"Got your Frag" bonuses are awarded when you Hard Lock an enemy aircraft that was already being targeted by a friendly, in as much as you are for all purposes 'stealing' their target, it's like the explanation in Got Your Six but in reverse. You first have to find a bogey that is being chased by a wingman and press :triangle: to select it as your active target, get close enough behind it to engage a Hard Lock and hit :square: when you see the prompt to do so. This will make your wingman break off and find another bogey as you take up the chase (often with a cutting remark over the radio about them being perfectly capable etc. etc.). Maintain a Hard Lock and take them down for a Got Your Frag bonus. This can be unlocked online as well as offline and is cumulative for both.

If you are looking for a good place to farm these I would say Mission 04 is about the best bet. Progress with the mission up to where the USS McKinley is being attacked by bombers and there's also a secondary objective to protect a smaller flotilla to the South East. Cruise the skies and watch for your allies to engage enemies, then jump in quickly to steal the kills. Once there is one final MiG left to defeat, crash on purpose and replay the last checkpoint if you need any more.

http://www.playstationtrophies.org/images/trophies/1359/EA4.jpg In Your Face (B)

Score 10 "Close Quarters" bonuses for destroying aircraft within 1000m

:tagoffon:

First of all, remember that this bonus must be earned whilst in Hard Lock. You can get it without and as such they will not count so just remember to engage pretty much everything in the air in Hard Lock to be sure.

The vast majority of your kills in Hard Lock mode will be within 1000m so this will unlock very quickly, almost in tandem with Hard Locked. If you feel you have dropped back a little, you can use afterburners to catch up again providing remain in Hard Lock mode when you go in for the kill. This can be unlocked online as well as offline and is cumulative for both.

http://www.playstationtrophies.org/images/trophies/1359/200.jpg Always The Bridesmaid (B)(H)

Score 10 "Assist" bonuses for damaging an aircraft that an ally destroys

:tagoffon:

Every time you damage an enemy aircraft but fail to eliminate it, there's a chance your A.I controlled wingman will pick up the pieces and nail them for you and earn you an Assist Bonus which you will see come up as part of your score on the right of the screen. A couple of things to note are that missiles are one hit kills in Hard Lock mode so in order to deal damage that is not critical, use your machine guns or a missile that is locked on but not in Hard Lock. Also, if you are in Hard Lock mode, your wingman will not engage so if you end up having to Hard Lock a target to deal the initial damage by machine gun, press :square: again to disengage and your wingman should sweep up. You are likely going to unlock this if you use your machine gun often enough in Campaign Mode to pick these up as you go but if you need to farm them then play Mission 01 and damage each aircraft with your guns just enough to not kill them (the reticule displaying their name in your crosshairs fades from yellow to red the more damage it has been dealt) then break off. Deadeye will pick them off easily but he will get shot out of action by the last MiG so finish things off and replay the same mission again until it pops.

This can be unlocked online also but requires 4 players at least and is frankly not worth the bother on balance with how easy it is to farm offline.

http://www.playstationtrophies.org/images/trophies/1359/BA3.jpg Going Evasive (B)

Successfully evade a missile

:tagoffon:

Evading missiles will become part and parcel of the game as you progress and the mechanics are almost the same as the QTE event for getting a Hard Lock. See Slippery Customer for more info.

http://www.playstationtrophies.org/images/trophies/1359/E87.jpg Tank Buster (B)

Destroy 25 armoured vehicles

The earlier missions in Campaign Mode are all focused on Air and Sea based enemies so you won't get many chances to rack these up early on but Mission 06 has an abundance of them so a couple of runs will be enough for this. Infect, on this mission, when you have to protect the allies as they move through the small urban area but keep coming up against blockades, the second wave is made up of 5 tanks all close together in the middle of the road. Select your bunker buster bombs and drop a couple as you fly over them, it will wipe them all out in one pass and notch 5 kills. Now simply crash and restart the last checkpoint and do the same thing until you have all 25. It isn't actually necessary though as there's a ton of tanks all throughout Campaign Mode so come back to it if you somehow miss out on it. Tank unit kills are cumulative over all game modes but there aren't any online so by this I mean over Campaign Mode and Danger Zone.

http://www.playstationtrophies.org/images/trophies/1359/C5B.jpg Bunker Buster (B)

Destroy 10 bunkers

Bunkers are ground based targets and can only be destroyed with Air to Ground missiles that are locked on or with the bunker buster bombs. There are way more than 10 in Campaign Mode so don't worry about this at all but in any case, Mission 14 in Campaign Mode starts off with a bunch of about 8 of them that need to be destroyed before the ground team get to them. Wipe them all out and restart the mission and take care of them again but I would be surprised if you needed a second run as there's way more than 2 in the missions before this one.

http://www.playstationtrophies.org/images/trophies/1359/388.jpg Dissimilar Air Combat Training (S)(H)

Destroy a super-manoeuvrable aircraft while flying an attack aircraft

:tagoffon:

This can be done online but unless you are boosting, it's not recommended. Nobody uses the bulky planes and if you try to corner an FA-18 Super Hornet or similar, you are going to get owned every time so keep things simple and do this in Campaign Mode.

Once you complete a Campaign Mode mission, you can then replay it using your own choice of aircraft and weapon loadout as opposed to the default one. Replay mission 14 and select the Sukhoi Su-25 Frogfoot as your aircraft and make sure you are carrying some sort of Air to Air missile. Your first objective is to take out the bunkers ahead of the allied convoy but you will very soon be joined by a wave of enemy MiG-23's so skip the bunkers and engage a MiG ASAP. You do not need to be in Hard Lock for this trophy but it helps if you are. As your aircraft is much less aerodynamic than the MiG-23 you will need to win at least 4 or 5 Hard Lock QTE manoeuvres to expand your target reticule wide enough to compensate for it. Once your reticule is just about taking over most of the screen you should gain the lock you need and fire a missile. Your trophy will pop immediately afterwards.

http://www.playstationtrophies.org/images/trophies/1359/6F0.jpg Slippery Customer (S)(H)

Successfully evade 10 missiles in a row

:tagoffon:

If you are playing on Campaign Mode then chances are you will not encounter your first incoming missile until Mission 03. If you are playing Danger Zone then expect them to come at you pretty much immediately but either way, the premise is the same. Evading missiles works a bit like a hard lock manoeuvre except you will get a warning on screen that a missile is inbound with a warning tone getting higher in pitch the closer the missile is getting to you. After a few seconds you will get a QTE on screen displaying two things. The left image is for smart flares, activated by pressing :l1: and the image to the right indicates the :r3: button with a directional arrow indicating which way to press it to avoid the missile. Sometimes one of these will be greyed out meaning you have to do the opposite action, other times you can choose. There is no discernible way to know what will happen until it is on-screen so react as quickly as you can.

This is hard to do online because if you are Hard Locked you will be destroyed, it is only 'mad dog' missiles (those fired with a basic lock-on) which can be avoided and nobody bothers with those so I recommend farming this on Campaign Mission 03, you will be introduced to your first ground targets which includes a mobile SAM system on your third checkpoint. You need not worry about any other targets as there will not be any aerial enemies until the next checkpoint so just fly around above the SAM and avoid the missiles one after the other. If you get hit, you will suffer damage and you will need to restart the count obviously but the time allowance to react to the QTE is quite generous so it isn't a hard trophy at all.

This trophy is also cumulative and can be spread across mission, game modes and also through online and offline modes so long as it's a straight 10 in a row.

http://www.playstationtrophies.org/images/trophies/1359/D2C.jpg In The Zone (S)(H)

Win 10 hard lock manoeuvres in a row

You will be taught how to get a Hard Lock on an enemy in Mission 01 of Campaign Mode.

If you are struggling, play Mission 01 of the Campaign Mode on Easy then gain a Hard Lock as scripted on the first enemy MiG and destroy him. There are a couple of other MiGs to fight but after you see those off, a scripted event shows Deadeye being forced out of action leaving you alone with a solitary MiG. This is where you will earn this trophy, get a Hard Lock on him and wait for the QTE. Pull it off correctly and continue to follow him, it is very likely your reticule will go red indicating you are ready to fire a missile for the kill but hold off so continue to pursue him. Another QTE will come up after about 10 seconds so repeat the process and do so again another 9 times and it will come with practice.

http://www.playstationtrophies.org/images/trophies/1359/D3A.jpg Old School (B)

Destroy 5 bombers by destroying their engines with guns

You will encounter Bombers during Mission 04 in Campaign Mode whilst defending the USS McKinley. A message on screen will herald their arrival and you must take them out before they do heavy damage to the aircraft carrier. They are slow and not very agile at all, tending to fly in straight lines and rely on the MiGs to draw away enemy fire. Position yourself behind them and target the engines (there are two under each wing) and fire away with your machine guns. It will only take a few hits before it starts to flame out with smoke billowing from it, this means it's done and you can take out another engine. Once you blast all four, the bomber will start to nosedive and disintegrate before crashing into the sea. There are two waves consisting of four bombers each so with 8 in total there's more than enough to pop the trophy, if you miss it then you can always replay it later on as they do not need to be done in one sitting, alternatively just continue to play through the Campaign Mode as there are another 4 to take down in Mission 09 and another handful in Mission 12.

http://www.playstationtrophies.org/images/trophies/1359/5EB.jpg Victory Roll (B)(H)

Destroy an enemy aircraft with guns while barrel rolling

:tagoffon:

This sounds a lot harder than it actually is and can be unlocked on pretty much any enemy high speed aircraft. Acquire a hard lock to fix the target ahead of you and win the aerial manoeuvre QTE events by following the prompts on-screen. When you win, you will have a good steady 10-15 seconds to line them up with your reticule, whilst holding :r3: to the left or right, hold down :cross: to fire your machine gun. Steering, barrel rolling and firing your machine gun all at the same time can be a bit hit and miss at times but as long as you keep the hard lock engaged by winning all of the QTE events, you will connect with enough rounds to bring the enemy down so just make sure you keep barrel rolling the whole time.

You can also unlock this trophy online, the same general advice applies but human controlled players are much more erratic and difficult to hold down than A.I fighters are so I would say save it for the Campaign Mode method above.

http://www.playstationtrophies.org/images/trophies/1359/651.jpg Splash Damage (B)(H)

Destroy 5 enemies with a single shot

This can feasibly be done online if one of your allies damaged a plane enough for you to kill it with one shot but it's a far-fetched concept indeed. As far as single player goes, this unlocked for me during the first phase of Mission 05. You will be flying below enemy radar along a valley gorge when you will be alerted to enemy vessels that will radio in your presence if you don’t take them out in time. I used the rockets on them and although they instantly burst into a cluster of four and I fired the full four lots so a total of 12 rockets were used, I guess one of them connected and counted as a one shot kill. There are 3 vessels in total so once you nail the third, pause and select to 'Restart Checkpoint' and do the same again. The trophy will unlock on your second sweep of the gorge.

Buzz the tower in any mission

This will unlock when you 'Buzz' the tower in missions where it is available. See The Need For Speed for more info.

http://www.playstationtrophies.org/images/trophies/1359/D2E.jpg The Need For Speed (S)

Buzz the tower in five different missions

Buzzing the tower means to perform a close proximity fly-by of your base tower. When doing so, you must have afterburners activated by holding the :r3: stick in an upwards direction or the buzz wont count as you must be supersonic. You will know you have done it properly when you get a radio message from a very angry Admiral berating your stupidity. Be careful not to fly too close to the towers to avoid an embarrassing mistake but stay close enough for it to register, they can be done in any plane so that's not an issue. Below is a list of opportunities where you can Buzz the Tower, if you miss one then just replay the same stage later and do it then to record it as completed.

Mission 01 - When you are done with the MiGs and told to return to the USS McKinley and you are set a NavPoint to come in to land, fly directly over the landing deck with afterburners on so the tower is to your left. If done right you will get a message and a bonus score on the screen.

Mission 02 - You will start by having to destroy some target drones so do that as soon as you can, then you'll be advised you are taking part in a routine training exercise and given a NavPoint to go to but before that, locate the tower near the runway and fly past it to register another one.

Mission 04 - As with Mission 01, you will be required to pull off a landing on the USS McKinley once all of your objectives are complete. Once again, as you approach the NavPoint past the fleet of ships below, pick out the aircraft carrier and pull off a fly-by on your way past it.

Mission 09 - On this stage you will be piloting the F-22 Raptor and shown its capabilities. Once you complete this small introductory session and then defeat the 2 drones in the time limit you will receive a new objective to destroy a bunker. Before you go off and do that, locate the tower like you did in Mission 02 and again complete a fly-by.

Mission 12 - As soon as you begin here, find the tower on the ground nearby on the runway below and buzz it before doing anything else.

You can do these in any order you like. Once the last one has been buzzed, the trophy will unlock.

Spend more than 5 minutes flying within 200m of the ground

:tagoffon:

This is a little misleading, as it could be mistaken for the total only being for miles flown over solid ground when in fact it is also accumulated across water as well. Most missions and objectives are sea based and you need to fly quite low sometimes to get a hard lock on enemy ships and destroyers so there's every chance this will unlock naturally but if it doesn't then load up Mission 01 and as soon as it starts, lower your altitude to just above the water and hold it steady. Unless you purposefully tip your nose or brake left or right too hard, you will never drop into the water so just get low enough that you are almost skimming the sea and it will take care of itself. This is also cumulative and can combine both online and offline totals.

Spend more than 5 minutes flying with afterburner activated

:tagoffon:

To activate your afterburner, hold :r3: in a forwards direction. You will notice it has activated as the plane boosts further into the background and the screen gets a little blurred. The time spent with afterburners ignited is cumulative across all game modes and missions and also combines online and offline to give a gross total. There is no limit on how much you can use afterburners so activate them pretty much all the time to knock this out quick, it unlocked for me during Mission 03.

http://www.playstationtrophies.org/images/trophies/1359/E32.jpg Does The Rolling Help? (B)(H)

Perform 100 barrel rolls

:tagoffon:

To perform a barrel roll simply tap :r3: to the right or left. Repeat this another 99 times and your trophy will pop. It is cumulative and all game modes combine as well as online/offline so really wont take too long to unlock. Personally I was going through Campaign Mode and whenever I passed an objective and had to fly to another checkpoint, I would hold :r3: to one side constantly and I could get sometimes 20+ before I reached the marker and hence it unlocked for me during Mission 04.

http://www.playstationtrophies.org/images/trophies/1359/547.jpg Racking Up The Air Miles (B)(H)

Fly a total of 20,000km

:tagoffon:

This is simple enough and should unlock as you make progress towards your overall rank towards Fleet Admiral for the Five Stars trophy. Miles clocked are cumulative across all game modes and combine online and offline to give you a gross total. There's no menu or screen which displays your total air distance flown so far but if you happen to get to the end of the game and have every other trophy except this then play Mission 01 and after you take off, rubber band :l3: to the left or right and walk away. It should unlock in no time.

http://www.playstationtrophies.org/images/trophies/1359/6DB.jpg Give 'em Hell (S)

Fire every weapon in the game at least once

This trophy requires that you fire, not necessarily at a target, every weapon in the game at least once. You do not need to do anything specific for this as a couple of them are scripted as part of a tutorial in Mission 01 and the rest are all set as your default loadout across the rest of Campaign Mode. If for whatever reason you miss the opportunity to use one specific weapon, then you can use chapter select on any completed mission and replay it to make sure you get it and don't forget that :r1: is the button you use to toggle between active weapons in game. Here's a brief on each weapon and when it will feature.

Machine Gun

Mission 01 - Is the very first weapon you fire as part of the tutorial, closely followed by…

Short Range Air to Air Missile

Mission 01 - Also part of the initial tutorial. You will take out our very first enemy with this missile and unlock Splash One in the process.

Long Range Air to Air Missile

Mission 01 - This is the other missile you will be armed with in Mission 01 so make sure to take one of the MiGs out with a Long Range missile before you finish up.

Air to Ground Missile

Mission 03 - You will be introduced to ground targets in this one so select these missiles to take them out.

Rockets

Mission 05 - Rockets are for ground based targets but rather than lock on, they burst into four smaller rockets to deal spread damage. Line targets up with the reticule on screen before firing for maximum effect.

Free Fall Bomb

Mission 06 - These are also for use against ground based targets and again they do not lock on but as opposed to firing straight they fall from the underside of the plane. Mainly used to destroy tactical points like bridges etc.

Cluster Bomb

Mission 08 - Exactly like the Free Fall Bomb but has the added bonus of splash damage over a wider target area. Ideal for groups of ground based units like tanks and APCs.

GPS Guided Bomb

Mission 09 - Another ground targeting bomb but this has twice the destruction power of an Air to Ground Missile, perfect for destroying Bunkers.

Laser Guided Bomb

Mission 11 - Just like the GPS Guided Bomb but the aiming reticule works a little differently in that you need to line up the target before firing.

Multi Target Air to Air Missile

Bonus Mission - A missile able to lock onto multiple enemies at once, it breaks up into smaller missiles on firing and deals damage to all targets in range. Note that you can not fire this weapon in Hard Lock.

Fly every aircraft in the game at least once

There are a total of 14 aircraft that feature in the game but only two are initially available to use, the F-14 Tomcat and the MiG-31 Foxhound. You will unlock the rest of the aircraft as you progress through Campaign Mode on any difficulty with the exception of the F-35 Lightning II and the Sukhoi PAK FA. The strange thing is that there is actually no way you can unlock these at all, regardless of how many Gold Stars you have or the total score you accumulate. However, they are not required for this trophy so therefore it is thankfully not missable!

Here's a list of the aircraft you can actually unlock:

F-14 Tomcat

F-22 Raptor

F/A-18 Super Hornet

F-16 Fighting Falcon

F-15E Strike Eagle

A-6E Intruder

Su-47 Berkut

Su-35BM Flanker

Su-25 Frogfoot

MiG-31 Foxhound

MiG-29M Super Fulcrum

MiG-23MLD Flogger

Once you have unlocked them, you need to fly them all at least once. Start up any Danger Zone from the main menu and select whatever aircraft you have not used so far. Immediately nose dive and crash into the ground to end the game and go back to the Main Menu, simply repeat this cycle until you have flown all of the above planes and your trophy will unlock.

http://www.playstationtrophies.org/images/trophies/1359/081.jpg Five Stars (G)

Reach Fleet Admiral rank

:tagoffon:

Every time you complete a Campaign Mode Mission you will be awarded points, how many depends upon your performance and what difficulty you completed it on. On the post mission screen you will notice this score along with a star rating and your current rank (which is Ensign to begin with). In order to get to Fleet Admiral rank you must amass a cumulative total of 20 million points. The good news is it's completely cumulative across all missions, and you add to the total every point you score on another run, not just the amount you increased your score by. For example: You had 100,000 points from Mission 01 and replayed the same mission again and scored 115,000, your score would be 215,000. As such, this can be achieved by grinding the same mission over and over but if you are going for Gold Stars on each mission then you will be pretty close if not there already by the end. If you do need to farm points, make sure the difficulty is set to Hard for the points boost and grind any mission you prefer. Mission 01 does not offer many points but then again it is very short as well so can be replayed quickly, do whatever suits you though and when you hit the magic number the trophy will unlock. Lastly your scores across all modes count to the total, Multiplayer and Danger Zone inclusive.

http://www.playstationtrophies.org/images/trophies/1359/9CC.jpg Team Work (B)

Win a co-op mission with at least one other player

:tagonline: :tagmulti: :tagcoop:

Multiplayer offers the chance to play both competitively and also co-operatively. Missions are done in pairs so you only ever need one partner and they are not any kind of real challenge as the mechanics are all the same as Single Player. Simply complete the objectives in tandem with your buddy for the trophy but note that if either of you die, the mission is failed and you will need to start over. One thing to note is that before you begin you each pick your choice of aircraft and loadout, ensure one of you is competent in air to air combat and the other is more suited to ground based combat as each of the co-op missions have a varied objective set that requires a multi-skill set to complete. You won't get far having to take a fleet of enemy warships out if you are both kitted out in nothing but long and short range Air-to-Air missiles.

Get a Kill Streak of 5 in a Deathmatch or Team Deathmatch game

:tagonline: :tagmulti:

Deathmatch and Team Deathmatch are the only person vs person combat modes so choose to play either one and away you go. It should be obvious but human controlled players are a huge deal more tricky than the A.I enemies in Campaign Mode, you are going to have to be skilled at getting in behind an enemy to begin with and then you are relying on being faster on the draw in the QTE events than your opponent to win the hard lock manoeuvre or else the tables will turn and you will become the hunted. To string 5 kills together one after another takes some real skill and a little luck, just keep practising to get better and faster at reacting to the QTE's and take advantage of any new players you come across as the veterans are very competent at this game now and getting 5 kills in a row against them will be no easy task. This can be boosted with 1 other player, hit the boosting thread here to find a partner.

http://www.playstationtrophies.org/images/trophies/1359/3F0.jpg Payback Time (B)

Score 10 "Payback" bonuses for destroying the last player who killed you

:tagonline: :tagmulti:

The Payback award is as the description states and can be unlocked by playing Deathmatch or Team Deathmatch game modes. As the description states, you must accumulate 10 Payback bonuses which are awarded for destroying the last person who killed you. The first part of this is easy, just get killed. It will display the name of who killed you before you respawn so remember who it was and get back amongst the action. Hunt down the perpetrator and hard lock them, if it is not the right person, disengage and try again. Once you find them and get a Hard Lock, win the QTE events and launch a missile to obliterate them once the reticule goes red and earn a Payback award. Repeat this 10 times for the trophy. This can be boosted with a single other player, hit the boosting thread here to find a partner: LINK

Excellent guide Smartbomb, very thorough and well explained. The pause tip for defeating Fury in mission 12 worked like a charm, and yeah, this plat wouldve definitely been a 6 or a 7, possibly even 8 without it.

Just a reminder to everyone about "Splash One" trophy..it will NOT unlock in multiplayer, but all other kill trophies will, so its highly suggested to run a couple sp missions first before boosting off the mp trophies, or else your "first kill" will come after 5 kills & 5 kills in a row in mp trophies. I learned the hard way & had to delete myself from my ps3 before i synced so my list wouldn't be in question.

One more thing, you will need a boost partner for mp. I have never seen an online game as dead as this one. Never once did i see anyone other than my boost partner, and i sat in an online lobby for hours over many days waiting for someone to jump on.

Thanks again Smartbomb...good stuff :applause:

Excellent guide Smartbomb, very thorough and well explained. The pause tip for defeating Fury in mission 12 worked like a charm, and yeah, this plat wouldve definitely been a 6 or a 7, possibly even 8 without it.

Grats on your platinum trophy man, getting rarer by the day this one so kudos for pulling this one out of the bag.

The pause trick, cant tell you how relieved I was when I cracked onto it, Fury was handing me my ass on lemon grass before that little chestnut!

Glad the guide helped you my friend :applause:

You legend
